Daily WafflesFrom Joe Sbaraglia (The Waffleman)
CHINESE WALL - was the
nickname of the roadway for
trains that traveled from the
30th Street Station and the
Broad Street Station. It was a
mile or more long and elevated
twenty feet above street level.
It had arched tunnels through
which all the major north-south
streets passed. The wall was
torn down in 1953 and the land
it occupied that it is now John
F. Kennedy Boulevard.
CHINK BALL - A game of
throw and catch where one
player threw a pinkie ball to-
ward a wall. The ball had to hit
the pavement first, then the
wall. The other player had to
catch the ball. If the catcher
caught it three times, he be-
came the thrower, the other
player the catcher. The ball
was aimed at the chink which
is where the pavement and the
wall met. If the chink was hit
correctly, the ball took on an
erratic movement which made
it more difficult to catch.
CIGAR BOXES - were eagerly
sought after and used to store
everything; baseball cards,
treasures and marbles.
