considered a desert, withannual precipitation of only200 mm (8 inches) along thecoast and far less inland. There are no permanenthuman residents, butanywhere from 1,000 to 5,000people reside throughout theyear at the research stationsscattered across the continent.Only cold-adapted plants andanimals survive there, including penguins, seals, nematodes, tardigrades, mites, many types of algaeand other microorganisms, and tundra vegetation. Beliefin the existence of a TerraAustralis – a vast continent inthe far south of the globe to"balance" the northern lands ofEurope, Asia and North Africa

– has existed since the timesof Ptolemy (1st century AD),who suggested the idea topreserve the symmetry of allknown landmasses in theworld. Depictions of a largesouthern landmass werecommon in maps such as theearly 16th century Turkish PiriReis map. Even in the late17th century, after explorershad found that South Americaand Australia were not part ofthe fabled "Antarctica",geographers believed that thecontinent was much largerthan its actual size. Europeanmaps continued to show thishypothetical land until CaptainJames Cook's ships, HMSResolution and Adventure, crossed the Antarctic Circle on

17 January 1773, in December1773 and again in January1774.

The Antarctic Convergence isthe where the warmer watersof the north meet the colder,

denser, less saline waters ofthe south. As the colder watersinks beneath the warmer, amixing occurs that bringsnutrients to the surface. Foundbetween 40ºS and

60ºS, the convergence is anever-changing frontier. It is thebiological limit of the Antarcticecosystem and anywheresouth of the convergence isknown as the Antarctic Ocean. While there is often a low fogin the area and an increase inwildlife, other than using athermometer, there is no wayto know when you arecrossing it; the seas do not getrougher and the water colordoes not change. The watersof Antarctica circle thecontinent in the world’s biggestocean current at an estimatedrate of 150 million cubic

meters per second. Oncecarried far into the northernoceans, the dense polar waterhas a cooling effect on tropicaland temperate waters and isimportant to the oceans’balance.

Andvord Bay penetrates deepinto the Antarctic Peninsula;from here the Weddell Seaside is a mere fifty kilometres(30 miles) away. Once insidethe bay, one is surrounded onall sides by the mountains andalpine glaciers of thepeninsula. The bay issplendidly scenic and fills withcastellated icebergs andwildlife in the long days of thesummer.

Nestled at the bottom of thebay is Neko Harbour, namedfor a whaling ship whichanchored there in the early1900’s. It is one of the rareplaces in the AntarcticPeninsula area where one cancome ashore on the Antarcticmainland. Hike up the hill tothe penguin rookery and anamazing view of Andvord Baybut do not continue onto theglacier as it is heavilycrevassed. The glacier acrossthe tiny harbour is very active

and creates very impressivebut dangerous waves when itcalves – please stay off thebeach.

Petermann Island was firstdiscovered by German whalerEduard Dallman and namedfor geographer AugustPetermann. It is perhaps morefamous for its 1909 residentJean-Baptiste Charcot. Hisship Pourquoi Pas wintered ina tiny cove on Petermann thatCharcot named PortCircumcision. There is a cairnand plaque from theexpedition on a hill near theship’s old anchorage. There isa 1950’s era Argentine refugethat in recent years has beenkept up and visited regularlyby the staff from Vernadskiy, the nearby Ukranian base.Vernadsky was British BaseFaraday until 1996. There is across commemorating threemen from Faraday who werelost on the sea ice trying toreturn from the island to thebase in the winter of 1982.Adélie penguins, Blue-eyedshags, and the world’ssouthernmost Gentoo penguincolony are the main attractionshere.

The Argentine base ofAlmirante Brown is located onthe Antarctic Peninsulamainland near Skontrop Covein Paradise Harbour. It isnamed for William Brown, anIrish immigrant who became anational hero in Argentina andis known as the father of theArgentine Navy. In 1984, thestation’s doctor went slightlymad and burned the basedown. All seven members ofthe base staff weresubsequently rescued by theAmerican research vesselPolar Duke. The Argentineanssent down a crew everysummer to rebuild the basebut, as many other Argentinebases, it has been closed inrecent years. The empty basemakes for a nice landingwhere you can view the stationand the gentoo penguins thatcall it home. A steep hike upthe snow-covered hill isrewarded with a magnificentview of the entire bay.

Cuverville Island supports oneof the largest known gentoopenguin colonies. This can beapparent from miles awaygiven the right wind direction.Early in the season, snowcover impedes but doesn’t

stop penguins accessing theirnests and an intricate networkof “penguin highways” iscarved into the snow. Theshallow waters betweenCuverville and Rongé islandsoften trap and groundicebergs. This makes forsuperb ship-cruising throughthe channel. Up from therookery at Cuverville, steepcliffs lead to the island top. These cliffs should be avoidedso as not to damage themosses and lichens that growthere. The cliffs are also hometo skuas that are vigorous indefending their well-hiddennests.

The Lemaire Channel was firstsighted by Eduard Dallman in1873 and then charted andtraversed by Adrien deGerlache in 1898. He named itfor Charles Lemaire, a fellowBelgian who explored theCongo for King Leopold III.Given the right weather, thiseleven kilometre-long (sevenmile) and 1.6 kilometre-wide(one mile) channel can bestrikingly beautiful. The steepcliffs and glaciers of BoothIsland to one side mirror theopposite shores of theAntarctic Peninsula. Whenprotected from the wind, theclear waters offer anextraordinary reflection of themountains in the water; therecan appear to be four differentsets nudging each other. Somany camera clicks can beheard during a traverse of theLemaire Channel that it isknown by expedition staff asthe “Kodak Crack”. Navigationof the channel is dependentupon ice conditions but onedoesn’t need to travel all theway down to experience itsbeauty.

St. Andrews Bay: According tothe expedition team this is“just the most amazing place

in the world”, probably due toSouth Georgia’s largest kingpenguin and elephant sealconcentration. The bay is fullyexposed to the open sea andthe frequently occurring strongwinds that plummet from thesummits of the AllardyceRange (up to 2000m high). The 3km long fine darksanded beach only getsinterrupted by some riversflowing from the Heaney,Buxton and Cook Glaciers.Enjoy!

There is nowhere, in anylatitude, quite like SouthGeorgia; magnificent mountainscenery, glaciers galore, arugged coastline punctuatedwith castellate and tabularicebergs, a rich historicaltapestry, and wildlife wildlifewildlife. Its unique positioninside the AntarcticConvergence yet outside thelimit of the yearly sea icemakes this 3,755 squarekilometre island home to tens

of millions of breedingpenguins, seals and seabirds.Although it was first sighted byLondoner Antoine de la Rochein 1675, Captain James Cookbecame the first to land onand survey the island in 1775.Upon his return to Britain,Cook’s description of largenumbers of seals in theSouthern Ocean precipitatedthe plundering of the area. Thewhalers followed the sealersand the first shore station wasup and running by 1904. Thelast of the eventual six shorestations closed in 1965. Duringthis period over 175,000whales were ‘processed’ atSouth Georgia, including41,515 blue whales. There isan estimated 4% of theoriginal whale population left inthe Southern Ocean.

Founded by Norwegian CarlAnton Larsen in 1904,Grytviken was the first whalingstation in Antarctic waters. Here it is possible to pay yourrespects to Sir ErnestShackleton and others at thegraveyard and visit theWhaler’s Church. Themanager’s house became theSouth Georgia WhalingMuseum in 1992 and ismaintained by the BritishAntarctic Survey and theGovernment of South Georgia. The museum has a rich andfascinating display of whaling, sealing, exploring, and naturalhistories of the whole island. There is also a shop with avariety of souvenirs – theyaccept British pounds, Euros,American dollars, and Visacredit cards (no Amex).Grytviken is home to severalderelict ships, including Petrel,an excellent surviving exampleof a steam-powered whale-catcher. Just across the covefrom Grytviken is King EdwardPoint, site of the former BritishGarrison and now home to aBritish Antarctic Surveyapplied fisheries researchstation as well as the MarineOfficer, the

Government's solerepresentative. The MarineOfficer’s duties include thoseof Harbour Master, Customsand Immigration, FisheriesOfficer, and sub-Postmaster.Captain Larsen knew a goodthing when he saw it; KingEdward Cove is located in aprotected corner ofCumberland East bay. Thepier at Grytviken is veryunstable however andlandings usually occur on abeach set out by the MarineOfficer.

Strømness Bay is home to thethree deserted whaling stations;Strømness, Leith Harbour, andHusvik. Unfortunately, the stationbuildings cannot be entered forsafety reasons but one canusually get close enough toacquire a sense of what theymust have been like during theirheyday. Elephant seals and furseals are found along the beach. There is a small gentoopopulation as well as occasionalking penguins. It was from thenearby station of Husvik that theentire staff volunteered to rescueShakleton’s 22 men stranded onElephant Island. Setting out inSouthern Sky, and the men ofHusvik would not be able to getthrough the sea ice surroundingElephant Island and it would takeShackleton four attempts andover four months to reach hismen.

Stanley: Chosen as the newseat of government and firstsettled in the early 1840’s,Stanley was picked for itssheltered harbour and accessto abundant fresh water andpeat for fuel. Initially surviving

as a provisioning and repairstop for ships traveling aroundCape Horn, Stanley achieveda notorious reputation as ahaven for vagabond seamenand grizzled whalers. After theopening of the Panama Canalin 1914 and the switch fromsail to steam, Stanley becameincreasingly dependent on thewool trade. Its notoriousreputation long gone, theresidents of Stanley have thathardy, cooperative friendlinessoften found in remotecommunities. One doesn’t

have to leave Stanley toexperience the wildlife of theFalklands. All kind of faunacan be found around townfrom sea lions and Peale’s andCommerson’s dolphins in theharbour to steamer ducks orupland geese holding up traffic(two or three cars on the samestreet would be consideredtraffic) while turkey vulturesand Dominican gulls soaroverhead.
