Massive buying in heavyweights led by SapuraKencana Petroleum and CIMB drove the benchmark index
up to end the week on a high note, after falling in the last five trading days. At 5pm, the benchmark FTSE
Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) finished at 1,788.31, up 20.54 points after hovering between 1,766.22 and
1,795.29. SapuraKencana and CIMB accounted for 6.34 points on the key index gain, adding 31 sen and 21
sen to RM3.47 and RM6.40, respectively. A dealer said that investors might have taken advantage of the
lower price to start returning to the market.
Malaysia certainly has a lot to offer in terms of sharing knowledge and practical experience with other
developing countries in the Commonwealth from the ongoing implementation of the National
Transformation Policy. As such, the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and
Management (CAPAM) Biennial conference slated from Sunday till Tuesday in Putrajaya is both significant
and timely for Malaysia to showcase good governance or efficient management by the government.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts have concluded that the Lynas rare earth
processing facility near Kuantan generates very low level radioactive waste. The conclusion was made by
the IAEA expert team following a follow-up mission to conduct an independent review of radiation safety
at the rare earth processing facility.
The Ministry of Finance (MoF) is participating in the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration
and Management (CAPAM) 2014 from October 19-21 to improve the country's financial management
system. MoF Secretary-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah said among the issues that would
be discussed during the conference were the Accrual Accounting System and Goods and Services Tax
(GST) which will be implemented in April next year. "Malaysia can learn from the Commonwealth
countries such as Australia and Canada on these two important matters.
The Cabinet today approved the RM100m rubber productivity incentive for smallholders as announced
under the 2015 Budget recently. Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Amar Douglas
Uggah Embas said the incentive is to help rubber smallholders suffering from low rubber prices. “Starting
January 1 next year, rubber smallholders will be eligible for assistance should rubber prices fall below
certain levels,” he said.
