We, the Roman Catholic Parish of St Martha, are a diverse and multicultural parish in Miami Shores, Florida. FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Today, on this Fifth Sunday of Lent, we take some time to reflect on life's biggest questions about who we are and what happens after we die. The prophet Ezekiel relays the words of God, twice referring to the Israelites as "my people." The Israelites are indeed God's own chosen ones, whom God promises to fetch out of the grave and revive, settling them on new land. We know that Jesus extends that promise to all of us through Baptism, as Saint Paul's Letter to the Romans emphasizes: "If the Spirit of the One who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also." The raising of Lazarus in John's Gospel proves God's mastery over death. We are God's own beloved children. Nothing, not even death, is more powerful than God's care for us. DEAD AGAIN "Lazarus, come out!" Jesus shouts his command, and a beloved friend rises from the dead. Those of us who have lost loved ones might wish Jesus would call our dearly departed back from the grave too, keeping them on earth a little while longer for companion-ship. Consider, however, that Martha and Mary had to grieve their brother not once, but twice. The miracle of Lazarus' resuscitation did not prevent Lazarus from dying again. Dif-ficult as death is to bear, Jesus has a merciful plan for us: not endless resuscitations, but genuine resurrection. Unlike Laza-

rus, we will die just once, and that is a small price to pay for the majestic reward Jesus has planned for each of us. Jesus is "the resurrection and the life." If we believe in him, we can live forever in glorious, resurrected bodies free from pain and disability. The prophet Ezekiel describes the promise of God, to put God's own spirit within us so we may live. "I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD." Jesus Christ fulfills that promise. If we belong to Jesus, then, we possess all the riches of God's kingdom. Today, as we stand at the Profession of Faith and recite the Creed with our sisters and brothers in Christ, we can marvel at what the Lord has done for us. YES, LORD For the third week in a row, our Sunday Gospel reading nar-rates a bold profession of faith in Jesus Christ. First we had the Samaritan woman at the well, then the man cured of his blindness, and now Martha, the grieving sister of Lazarus. The eclectic mix of believers reminds us that God desires all people to have faith. After professing our own faith during the liturgy today, we are sent to make disciples of all. Strengthened by word and sacrament, let us live bold Chris-tian lives. May our loving words and deeds draw others to life in Christ.

JESUS' MINISTRY SUMMARIZED The story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead is the single longest story (apart from the Passion) in the Gospel of John. In it we find a summary of most of Jesus' ministry. We see his very human nature as he is moved by Martha and Mary's sor-rows and as he himself weeps at the tomb of Laz-arus. He is the wisdom of God's Word made flesh as he explains to his follow-ers that the death of Laza-rus will serve as a sign of the glory of God. He crowns the miracles he works in John's Gospel (which began with the most "human" miracle of making new wine at Cana's wedding) by raising Lazarus from the dead--a "preview," if you will, of his own death and resurrection to come. This portrait of Jesus reminds us, as we near the end of our Lenten journey, that he is with us, knows us, understands us in every moment of our lives. He knows the joy of our human feasting, he knows the sorrow of our weeping. As we prepare to walk with him through the days of Holy Week, we are filled with faith that--through Christ--God's glory will be with us in every moment of our lives and--with Christ--in our life everlasting.

The 2017 Lenten season began on Ash Wednesday, March 1, for Latin-rite Catholics. In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote our-selves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that "remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit."

Take inspiration for your Lenten journey from prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the dai-ly Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is some effort to share this world equally—not only through the distribution of money, but through the shar-ing of our time and talents. In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal com-mitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and dis-cernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics. The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recog-nize their link to baptismal renewal. We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those wa-ters in which we were baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ. Catholics are also encouraged to make going to confession a significant part of their spiritual lives during Lent. Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of absti-nence. For the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 to 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms for abstinence from meat are binding upon mem-bers of the Latin Catholic Church in the United States from age 14 onwards.

Greater Than You Expect Sometimes a prophet says more than he intended. Ezekiel in the first reading is talking about restoring Israel after the Baby-lonian exile. The Jews saw the Exile as punishment for their sins, especially the sin of relying on false gods or political leaders for their safety. God demonstrates forgiveness by bringing them back to Israel; God also shows them divine power and glory so that they return to the Lord for their pro-tection. Ezekiel uses the image of the dead rising from their graves (37:12). Jesus came to show us God in a new way and to fulfill the promises of all previous prophecies. Notice how the first reading repeats two phrases: "open your graves" and "know that I am the LORD." Jesus demonstrates that God's promise is much greater than anything Ezekiel expected. First, the Gospel. When Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus, he appar-ently waited till his friend had died. He knew that he was going to raise Lazarus from death to help his disciples believe. So why was he "perturbed and deeply troubled"? It could be that he was disappointed that his friends did not seem to be-lieve that he could raise Lazarus. Notice Jesus became perturbed again when some of the crowd question Jesus' ability to do so (John 11:37-38). Like Ezekiel, the people of Jesus' time did not expect him literally to raise the dead. But God used the prophet's message to prepare for Jesus' message that not only would he rise from the dead, but we will also. And like the friends and relatives of Lazarus, we too may find it hard to believe, or at least question how it could be possible. Fortunately, Jesus helps with that, too. Look at the second reading from the letter to the Romans. Be-cause we have God's Spirit living in us, we who are sinners can be raised to new life by that Spirit. When our sins are for-given, we begin to live a new life by loving the people we hurt by our sins, forgiving people who have hurt us, being more concerned for the poor than for our own comfort. We are freed from worrying about the future, from holding onto grudges, and perhaps even from the fear of death itself--all because we have experienced the new life of God's Spirit and, as Ezekiel says, know that God is the LORD.

Estamos libres de preocuparnos por el futuro, de atarnos a ren-cores, y tal vez incluso del temor a la muerte misma, todo por-que hemos experimentado la nueva vida del Espíritu de Dios y, como dice Ezequiel, sabemos que Dios es el SEÑOR.

genes de vida y de muerte abundan. Ya hemos llegado lejos en el trayecto de esta Cuaresma y podemos pregun-tarnos, ¿estoy preparado para dar muerte a mis viejos hábi-tos y aceptar una vida nueva? Que ésa sea nuestra oración,

tanto para nosotros mismos como para todos los que se están preparando para recibir el Bautismo, la Confirmación y la Eucaristía en esta Pascua.

QUINTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA Hoy, en este Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma, reflexionamos sobre las mayores preguntas de la vida; sobre quiénes somos y qué sucede después de morir. El profeta Ezequiel retransmi-te las palabras de Dios, refiriéndose dos veces a los israelitas como "mi pueblo". Los israelitas son ciertamente los elegidos de Dios, a quienes Dios promete sacar de la tumba y revivir, estableciéndolos en nueva tierra. Sabemos que Jesús extiende esa promesa a todos nosotros a través del Bautismo, como la carta de San Pablo a los Romanos enfatiza: "Si el Espíritu de Aquel que resucitó a Jesús de entre los muertos mora en uste-des, el que resucitó a Cristo de entre los muertos dará también vida a sus cuerpos mortales." La resurrección de Lázaro en el Evangelio de Juan demuestra el dominio de Dios sobre la muerte. Somos hijos amados de Dios. Nada, ni siquiera la muer-te, es más poderoso que el amor de Dios por nosotros. MUERTO OTRA VEZ "Lázaro, ¡sal!" Jesús con voz fuerte da la orden y un amigo muy querido se despierta de la muerte. Aquellos de nosotros que hemos perdido a seres queri-dos podríamos desear que Jesús llamara a nuestros difuntos des-de sus tumbas y les devolviera la vida también, y que sigan estan-do un poco más de tiempo acompañándonos. Considera, sin embargo, que Marta y María tuvieron que entristecerse por su hermano no una sino dos veces. El milagro que le devuelve la vida a Lázaro no le evitó que volviera a morir. Siendo tan difícil la muerte de Lázaro, Jesús tiene un plan misericordioso para nosotros: no revivir incontablemente, sino la verdadera resurrección. A diferencia de Lázaro, nosotros moriremos sólo una vez, y ese es un pre-

cio pequeño por la recompensa extraordinaria que Jesús plani-ficó para cada uno de nosotros. Jesús es "la resurrección y la vida". Si creemos en él, podemos vivir por siempre en la glo-ria, en cuerpos resucitados libres de dolor y discapacidades. El profeta Ezequiel describe la promesa de Dios, poner el mismo espíritu de Dios dentro de cada uno de nosotros para que vivamos. "Yo lo he prometido, y lo afirmo, dice el Se-ñor". Jesucristo cumple plenamente esta promesa. Si pertene-cemos a Jesús, entonces, poseemos todas las riquezas del Reino de Dios. Hoy, así como nos ponemos de pie en la Pro-fesión de fe y al recitar el Credo con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, podemos maravillarnos de lo que el Se-ñor ha hecho por nosotros. SÍ, SEÑOR Por tercera semana consecutiva, la lectura de nuestro Evange-lio dominical narra una profesión intrépida de fe en Jesucristo. Primero tuvimos la de la mujer samaritana en el pozo de agua, luego la del hombre ciego de nacimiento y ahora la de Marta, la hermana que guarda duelo por su hermano Lázaro. Estos creyentes tan diferentes nos recuerdan que Dios desea que todas las personas tengan fe. Después de profesar nuestra pro-pia fe durante la liturgia de hoy, somos enviados a hacer discí-pulos. Fortalecidos por la palabra y el sacramento, vivamos intrépidamente nuestras vidas cristianas. Que nuestras pala-bras cariñosas y obras lleven a otros a vivir en Cristo.

El Tiempo de Cuaresma del 2017 comienza el 1ero de marzo, Miércoles de Ceniza, para los católicos de rito latino. De una manera particular, durante la Cuaresma se nos pide que nos dediquemos a las obras espirituales y corporales de misericordia; estas "nos recuerdan que la fe se expresa en acciones cotidianas concretas, destinadas a ayudar a nuestros prójimos en cuerpo y espíritu".

"La Cuaresma es una época favorable para abrir las puertas a todos los necesitados y reconocer en ellos el rostro de Cristo." - Papa Francisco, Mensa-je para la Cuaresma 2017.

Tomen inspiración para su viaje cuaresmal en la oración, la lectura de la Escritura, el ayuno y la limosna. El ayuno que todos hacemos los viernes, no es más que un signo de la dis-ciplina cuaresmal diaria: el ayuno por ciertos períodos de tiempo, el ayuno de ciertos alimentos, el ayuno de otras cosas y actividades. Del mismo modo, la entrega de limosnas es un esfuerzo para compartir este mundo, no sólo a través de la distribución del dinero, sino también a través del intercambio de nuestro tiempo y talentos. En la Cuaresma, los bautizados son llamados a renovar su compromiso bautismal mientras otros se preparan para ser bautizados a través del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de los Adultos, un período de aprendizaje y discernimiento para los que han declarado su deseo de convertirse en católicos. La clave para la fructífera observancia de estas prácticas es reconocer su vínculo con la renovación bautismal. No esta-mos llamados a abstenernos del pecado solo durante la Cua-resma, sino a la verdadera conversión de nuestros corazones y mentes como seguidores de Cristo. Recordamos aquellas aguas en las que fuimos bautizados en la muerte de Cristo, morimos al pecado y al mal, y comenzamos una nueva vida en él. También se alienta a los católicos a hacer de la confe-sión una parte significativa de su vida espiritual durante la Cuaresma. Ayuno y Abstinencia. El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo son días obligatorios de ayuno y abstinencia. Los viernes de Cuaresma son días obligatorios de abstinencia. El ayuno aplica desde los 18 hasta los 59 años. Durante el ayuno, se permite comer una comida com-pleta y dos comidas adicionales más pequeñas, pero que no sean equivalente a una comida completa. En Estados Unidos la abstinencia de carne es obligatorias para los mayores de 14 años.

RESUMEN DEL MINISTERIO DE JESÚS El relato de cómo Lázaro revivió de entre los muertos es el relato más largo (además de la Pasión) en el Evangelio según san Juan. En él encontramos un resumen de la mayor parte del ministe-rio de Jesús. Vemos su natu-raleza humana cuando se conmueve con la tristeza de Marta y de María y cuando él mismo llora frente a la tumba de Lázaro. Es la sabiduría de la Palabra de Dios hecha car-ne cuando le explica a sus seguidores que la muerte de Lázaro servirá como una se-ñal de la gloria de Dios. Co-

rona los milagros que obra en el Evangelio según san Juan (que comenzó con el milagro más "humano" de hacer más vino en la boda de Caná) reviviendo a Lázaro de entre los muertos; un "avance", por así decirlo, de su propia muerte y resurrección por venir. Este retrato de Jesús nos recuerda, mientras estamos cerca del fin de nuestro viaje de Cuaresma, que él está con nosotros, nos conoce, nos comprende en cada momento de nuestra vida. Conoce la alegría de nuestras cele-braciones humanas, conoce la tristeza de nuestro llanto. Mientras nos preparamos para caminar con él en los días de Semana Santa, tenemos fe de que -por Cristo- la gloria de Dios estará con nosotros a cada momento de nuestra vida y -con Cristo- en nuestra vida eterna.
