J'uil. AMU-PHIA, April 2o.?The steamerCitv ofGlasgow arrived here last night withLiverpool advices to the evening of the 10th,

frw hours later than those brought by theA *n,e Citv Ol Glasgow brought 111 passen-gers-

MARKETS.

The markets on the 10th had been more an-imated (han (or some time previous. Thesales ofcotton had amounted to 11.000 bale*,vith a finuer market but no advance in

The Clay Mkdai..?The committee from!Se» York, charged with the presentation toHem) Clay of the counterpart of the goldMedal which was recently lost, performed theiragreeable and interesting duty in Washington,on Saturday last. The Intelligencer says, theMedal is precise!* similar to the one lost, hav-iis» been etiuck from the sarac dies, and, fortunately too, before any of the bron/.e me-dal* had been The slight imperfec-tions in the former have been entirely avoided

\u25a0:t this. !>y giving it a greater number of blowsin the press. Mr. Clay was deeply touchedat this renewed evidence of esteem, and re-sponded to the committee, informally, at somelength.

|3P James McGowati, the young man whowas so severely beaten by his brother-in-law,

Baltimore, diec on Sunday. The Americansays that Atkinson, t;,e murderer, has be-.ned very strangely >ince his incarceration?

Laving repeatedly been in the wildest convul-ons.and thrown himself about his cell in a fu-

rious manner. On Sunday he had a haggardappearance, at.d his nervous system was in astate oi disorder and irritability usuallyattendant on a severeand prolonged attack ofdelirium tremens.

Flood at the last.?The late storm andfreshet throughout New England was mostdestructive. We observe notices of railroadssubmerged, and mills and bridges swept awayon the Merrimac river, and a suspension ofoperations in the lactones at Lowell, Dover, and other places. The "oldest inhabitant"does not remember to have seen such a freshet.

Murper ok A Sailor.?On Friday last, two sailors named Samuel Haskins and Rich-aid Hayes, gut into au altercation on boardthe British brig Mary, in the harbor of New\oik, which resulted in the death of Haskins.Haves wasairested.

Action of the President in Wells' Case.Washington, April 24.?The commutation

of the sentence c: Weils by President Fill-i::ore is still the subject of warm discussion.?The reasons assigr.ea for his commutation arethe active exertions of the Ministers of theGospel, who are opposed to capital punish-ment. 1 learn from the best authority thatvjch arguments had hut littie weight with thePresident, but that it was upon the legal viewof the subject, so ably prefaced by Weils'counsel, Morgan, Chilton and Linton, which, supported by the influence of the clergymen, induced a le-esamir.ation of the principal wit-ness, Hughes. This examination was con-ducted on Thursday by District AttorneyFendall for the Unitea States, and bv EdwinC. Morgan and Samuel Chilton for "the con-demned. The testimony confirmed the Presi-dent in his opinion, that murder with maliceaforethought was not committed. No sickly criminal sympathy influenced.thedecision of the President, but he was governedby the facts in the case, as more fully devel-oped in the re-examination than appeared ont;'.e written record of the evidence as previous-ly submitted. The re-examination of Hugheswas no doubt principally induced by the ear-nest exertions of the Ministers, who were un-remitting in their endeavors to obtain a com-mutation of the sentence.

Fire Riots and Probable Lous of Life.Philadelphia, April2s.?A stable and twohorses were burned this morning ut the corner

of 12th and Lombard streets. The ShifflerHose Company, while returning from the fire, were attacked on Lombard street near Bth, bya gang of rowdies belonging to another com-pany. Policemen Walton and Jones, in at-tempting to slop the riot, were attacked andstruck with bricks and other missiles. Theythen drew their revolvers and fired upon theassailants, and Jas. Gillespie, belonging to theMoyamensing Hcse Company, was struck inthe back by a ball, and it is supposed is mor-tally wounded. The officers have surrenderedthemselves to await an investigation.

This has beengranted turn in consequence of his represen-tations, that he could hold no intercourse ofany kind with Mr. Webster. These papers are without doubt the best speci-mens of typographicalwit ever published. No one,exeppt perhapsShakspeare, has so infused blundersof thought and orthography with humor as Mr.Thackeray has, in these effusions of the honest-hearted, keen sighted, pluehbreeched James. Thespellingof these papers is not mere bad spelling ;

the mistakes are sometimes more that mistakes, they represent a comical misconception ot' thewords tbemsel ves, and there are few surer modesof securing a hearty laugh, than the perusal of apage of the Yellow Plush Papers But fun is not allwhich will be found in them. For sever-al months past I have used it in my iamily, and Indyspepsia, loss of appetite, dizziness and generaldebility, with entire success. Joy to the World?Hope for the Afflicted?More Teatimonyfrom Home!BAVHMom*,Bept 11,1851.

Messrs Mortimer & Mowbray I fetlit a dutyto make known the benefits I nave deiived fromBr. Hampton's Tincture. For a lengthof time Ihave been subject to great prostration of muscularpower, and great debilityof the nervoussystenr.accompanied with palpitation and flutteringof tk-heart. 1 had sucn sudden attacks that on oneocca-sion I couiu ovarcely get home. I, making mention of my case to a friend, hereferred me to Jo-seph K. Stapleton,Esq., an old and highly respect-able citizen of Baltimore, who had used the Tinc-ture under similar circumstances. I called on Mr.Stapleton, and after aninterview of some minutes.I was fully satisfied of the me4icel virtues of theTincture, from the evidence before me, of his ownperson, who for some time previous, indicated afailing state of health, but now a hearty, hale-ap-pearance, with the activity of youth. 1 immedi-ately commenced using the Tincture, and before Itook the contents of one bottle, my strength wasrenewed, and 1 could walk as brisk, and am as ac-tive as I was twenty years ago. This Tincture iathe grand restorative of the digestiveorgans, which, when destroyed, the whole system is in a state ofsuffering.

1 do assert it is no humbug, but it is, in reality, what it is represented to be by Or. Hampton, thainventor. WM. A. SCHAEFFER,
