Spanish arrest Ukrainian vessel The Ukrainian vessel Newfane has been arrested in the Spanish port of Castellon following the intervention of the International Transport Workers Federation, which came to the aid of 22 seafarers who claimed they are owed months of wages totalling $97,000. The vessel, which is registered in Panama, has been detained several times in various European ports because of safety deficiencies. The master claims the crew have been paid but the crew say that false “double book keeping” entries have been logged. In addition, the ITF claims that the crew have access to little food and unhygienic water. The vessel has now been detained by Spanish Port State Control, which is understood to have discovered 20 defects. The Newfane is believed to be ultimately owned by Innesbrook Investments in Panama, but the “beneficial” owner is Diamond Company of Odessa. Source : Lloyd's Register – Fairplay Daily News

Thinking Sinking The Directorate General of Shipping has ruled out piracy as a factor that led to the sinking of the vessel MV Rezzak which went missing on February 18, 2008 - instead it is now believed that it was more likely that the ship sank after encountering bad weather. The DG, Shipping, P H Krishnan told media that debris "believed to be that of MV Rezzak" was recovered on Thursday, 5 nautical miles from the Turkish coast. An interim report given by the Indian officer sent to Turkey to

investigate the disappearance of the vessel stated it was likely the ship had sunk. The DG shipping has said: "Although there is no firm evidence, but considering the extremely rough weather conditions, the size of the vessel and material found on the surface of the sea gives the impression that the vessel has sunk." But adding a twist to the tale was the fact that though the contract signed between the missing sailors and Pelican Marine states that 2D Shipping is the owner of the ship, Pelican's MD Santosh Biswas and the DG shipping officials have said they are not aware who owned the ship. The relatives of the sailors meanwhile, have announced that they will not accept the explanation given for Rezak's disappearance without ample proof. A relative Ms Uma Mohan, sister of Rezzak's ship engineer Mahendra Gopala Krishna Menon - completely dismissed DG shipping's statement over debris recovery and said they would continue their fight. "DG shipping has confirmed recovery of MV Rezzak's debris. We need proof, because we don't believe them. The agreement was with the owner of the ship, 2D shipping. We have asked the question, who are the real owners of the ship - but this has not been answered by either the government, or DG shipping. We will not accept their explanation, we will fight. and if DG Shipping thinks we will just keep quiet after a report like this - they are wrong," said Mohan.Source : ShipTalk

Stamps Honour RNLI Dramatic new stamps released by the UK Royal Mail celebrate the vital work of the people undertaking search and rescue at sea. The stamps highlight the actions of the crews of the Coastguard Rescue Helicopters working closely with the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

The Coastguard Rescue Helicopters have been called out more than 80 times already in 2008 and were called out 618 times during 2007. They regularly undertake a wide variety of search and rescue missions in what is often a very hostile environment. Operations this year already have included the dramatic rescue of crew members from the sinking 'Ice Prince', which got into difficulty in severe weather on January 14th and when the fishing vessel 'Spinningdale' was wrecked against the sheer rock cliffs of St Kilda the following day the crew were airlifted to safety by the Sikorsky S92 Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. Dave Jardine-Smith, Head of Search and Rescue, Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "It's important to remember that the crews involved regularly undertake rescue operations in a variety of challenging circumstances. As well as airlifting crew from sinking vessels they become involved in coastal and land searches, rescue work for inland flooding and the medical evacuation of seriously injured people. The professionalism and expertise of our service provider's crews, and the technological capabilities of the aircraft, are routinely apparent in such operations." Helicopters play a vital role providing fast searches of large areas and the ability to rescue survivors and get them to safety quickly. HM Coastguard operating at 18 Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres around the UK can call on a network of search and rescue

helicopters around the coast, including military aircraft and Coastguard helicopters now provided under a service contract from CHC Scotia. On the south coast there are Coastguard Rescue Helicopters providing a 24 hour emergency service with helicopters at Lee-on-Solent and Portland. A new aircraft, an Augusta Westland AW 139 will shortly be introduced into the Coastguard fleet at Lee on Solent and Portland. Coastguard Rescue Helicopters, Sikorsky S 92s, are also available 24 hours a day at Lerwick in Shetland and Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides. The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter has been seen regularly in the BBC's popular Seaside Rescue series. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency is the government body responsible for UK maritime safety. That includes co-ordinating search and rescue at sea through Her Majesty's Coastguard and checking that ships meet UK and international safety rules. It works to prevent the loss of lives at the coast and at sea, to ensure that ships are safe, and to prevent coastal pollution, and benefits from over 400 Volunteer Coastguard Rescue Teams around the entire coast. Evergreen pulls Gard hull cover Top liner operator Evergreen is pulling its hull-insurance cover out of Gard in a second notable setback to hit the Norwegian underwriter, better known for positive headlines. The move is good news for Asia Capital Re and the fledgling Singapore marine-insurance market, which gets its first high-profile hull lead. Evergreen has had a close 30-year relationship with Gard but could not agree terms at the March renewal of its hull-insurance programme.

The EVER DEVELOP seen at Maaspilot station Photo : Piet Sinke ©

The Evergreen move follows the loss of Royal Caribbean Cruises's protection-and-indemnity (P&I) business just three weeks ago. The cruise operator also had a renowned long-term relationship with Gard but in this case leaves part of its hull business with the Arendal-based underwriter. Market sources says Asia Capital Re, established just 16 months ago by a group of top ex-Swiss Re executives, offered substantially more competitive terms than Gard was prepared to match, so takes over as lead hull underwriter for this share of the Evergreen account. Evergreen, however, remains a major member of Gard, which provides the entire P&I cover for the fourth-largest of the containership fleets. The Taiwan-based shipowner's move to Asia Capital Re has sparked major interest in the marine-insurance market but mainly because of the success of a Singapore start-up, rather than Gard's loss. The P&I connection and the close relationship could lead to Evergreen's hull business returning to Gard in a hardening market. Asia Capital Re was set up with $620m of equity capital and has core financial backing from Khazanah, a Malaysian government-controlled investment fund. Reinsurance is the key target of Asia Capital Re but it has signalled its intention to become a force in hull, P&I cargo and the shipyard-risk markets. The company recently opened an office in Taipei which may have helped win the Evergreen account. Market sources suggest Asia Capital Re's marine claims-handling operation is currently relative weak and will have to be beefed up to cope with a major liner fleet. Evergreen founder Chang Yung-Fa served for many years as a shipowner director of Gard, while his son, Chang Kuo-Cheng, took his place around the Gard boardroom table some years ago.

Evergreen operates a fleet of 150 vessels of up to 7,000 teu with a total capacity that runs to 560,000 teu. The Evergreen hull business is placed in the international market by the Aon and Willis broking groups and comes as reinsurance from its own insurance operations, although most of the risk is transferred and the hull underwriters are expected to provide claims handling. The hull placing is international with Japanese and South Korean insurers having sizeable shares, although Gard was the claims leader. Marsh had a share of the business until earlier this year but Evergreen decided to streamline its broking arrangements with Aon and Willis. The shipowner is a sophisticated insurance buyer and has owned captive insurance companies for 15 years. It initially established Marinair Insurance in the Isle of Man before forming Evergreen Re in Bermuda. The diversified Evergreen shipping, aviation and tourism group made a further move into the insurance business by taking a shareholding in Central Re, a professional reinsurance company owned by the Taiwan government in 2002. Both Evergreen Re and Central Re also write third-party business. Source : Tradewinds

Runaway ship can sail no more THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) restricted cargo ship m/t Damar to Macalajar Bay in Cagayan de Oro City after it rammed a concrete column of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge in Mandaue City Monday night.

Marianito Mendoza, Marina-Northern Mindanao director, issued a cease and desist order on the 988.5-gross-ton vessel Thursday. The ship immediately sailed for Cagayan de Oro after the accident at 11 p.m. Monday in Cebu. The ship was towed by the Philippine Coast Guard, which brought it to the General Milling Corporation port. Damar is operated as a cargo tramp ship by its owners -- Sea Tech Transport Corporation of Naga, Cebu City. Mendoza said the ship would be prevented from sailing pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. Coast Guard's acting District Commander Eduardo B. Gongona said Marina also ordered the temporary suspension of the cargo ship safety construction certificate (CSSCC) and cargo ship safety equipment certificate (CSSEC). "If the vessel's CSSCC is suspended, it cannot operate as a cargo vessel or sail either," Gongona said. He said they are investigating why the skipper of m/t Damar, Alex Galacio Ipanag, who resides in Barangay Kauswagan, made a run for Cagayan de Oro knowing that authorities were looking for the ship in Cebu. Gongona said the m/t Damar left Trigon Shipyard in Naga, Cebu for Cagayan de Oro to load molasses at the Macabalan Wharf. He said Ipanag already violated one Maritime safety regulation when he sailed to Cagayan de Oro without submitting the Master Oath Safety Departure (MOSB) that would have him answer the collision in Mandaue City. Investigation made by the Coast Guard in Cebu said the ship bumped the concrete column of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge as it made its way through the Mactan Channel. Ipanag filed a marine protest last Wednesday, blaming the strong current in the channel for the incident that he described as "unavoidable." "The vessel drifted to the right side portion of the post of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge through no fault or negligence of my own manning as master of the said vessel," Ipanag said. "I, as master, and the crew of the vessel have exercised due care and diligence in trying to avoid hitting the said portion of the bridge," he added. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is now conducting safety checks on the bridge.

Captain fined in Holland for oil discharge in Estonia

SSG-TALLINN. The Dutch authorities have fined the captain of the Panama-flagged cargo ship Voyager II EUR 5,000 for an oil discharge in Estonian waters. An Estonian border guard aircraft detected two oil slicks near Hiiumaa (Dagö). Two days later, four kilometres of the west coast of Hilumaa was polluted by the oil. The enviromental inspection authority found evidence that implicated the Voyager II, which had passed Hilumaa’s north west coast at the time of the discharge. Within the framework of international cooperation, the Dutch police dealt with the crime when the ship entered a Dutch port.

Hastings RNLI rescue injured man Hastings RNLI lifeboat launched to help a crewman who had spilt acid into his eye. The man, 24, was aboard the Panama registered crude oil tanker Glen Maye, bound for the port of Oguendjo in Gabon. His injury meant that he had to be evacuated to hospital and the Hastings lifeboat was launched at 11am. The lifeboat was alongside the tanker within 30 minutes. Volunteer lifeboat man, Tim Walsh faced a perilous 40-metre climb up the ship's side on a rope ladder. Tim, an A & E Charge Nurse assessed the casualty before helping him down to the lifeboat.

German War Ship Found Off Australia A search for an Australian navy battle cruiser lost in 1941 has led to the wreck of the German raider that sank it, the prime minister said Sunday. Both the HMAS Sydney and the German vessel, the DKM Kormoran, sank after a battle off Australia's western coast on Nov. 19, 1941 during World War II. None of the 645 men aboard the Sydney survived. But 317 of the Kormoran's 397 crew rowed to the Australian coast in life boats and were taken prisoner. The 9,500 ton Kormoran had been disguised as a Dutch merchant ship when it opened fire on the Sydney.

"Finding the Kormoran is one big step forward (to finding the Sydney)," said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. The wreck was found Saturday about 500 miles north of the Western Australia state capital Perth, he said. It was found in 8,400 feet of water. The Finding Sydney Foundation, the organization conducting the search, also found debris near the site of the battle that could be part of the Australian war ship, foundation chairman Ted Graham said. Those debris were found in 8,990 feet of water. "We have ... located what we believe to be the battlefield site and there is an amount of wreckage there, but that has yet to be identified," Graham told reporters. Graham said he was uncertain whether the finds would lead them to the Australian ship. "There can never be a guarantee. We're working in water depths of several thousand meters," he said. The team would use a remote-operated vehicle to search the Kormoran wreckage and the battlefield site this week for more clues, he said. The government-funded $3.9 million search for the Sydney began two weeks ago and is headed by U.S. shipwreck hunter David Mearns. Mearns was involved in finding the wrecks of the British battle cruiser the HMS Hood and the DKM Bismarck, the German battle ship that sank her in the North Atlantic in 1941. The Sydney weighed in at 7,300 tons, making it the largest vessel from any country to be lost with no survivors during the war. The fate of the ship and its crew has remained an enduring mystery, though a parliament inquiry into the tragedy in 1999 accepted accounts by Kormoran survivors that they last saw the ship in flames and heading toward Perth. There are no current plans to raise the Sydney if it is found. Source : ap.google.com

Brazil To Start With Scorpene Brazil and France have entered into a strategic defense alliance, which involves France helping Brazil develop its own nuclear submarines, and a demand for French weapons. Brazil is developing a nuclear power plant small enough to fit into something like the new, 4,100 ton French Barracuda nuclear attack subs. France will first sell at least one Scropene conventionally powered sub to Brazil, to be built in Brazil. France will also help Brazil install the Brazilian designed nuclear power plant in a new sub design.

It's possible that France will also help Brazil with the design of that nuclear power plant. France also hopes to sell Brazil Rafael jet fighters, and has agreed to buy fifty helicopters from Brazil. The 1,400 ton Scorpene subs cost $600 million each, while the new French Barracuda nuclear powered subs cost $1.6 billion each. Brazil wants to improve its fleet, in part because oil has been discovered off the coast of Brazil. France also wants to develop another major export customer for its weapons, and is willing to go to extraordinary lengths to accomplish this. Source : strategypage

'Improve harbour to attract cruise ships' BETTER facilities for cruise ship tenders in Scarborough Harbour could breathe new life into the area's ports. The idea has come from Scarborough’s Forum for Tourism which believes there are few ports for this type of trade on the east coast and this would be another opportunity for the town to bring in a new type of visitor. The idea would mean attracting cruise ships and large vessels to anchor off the town, with facilities in the harbour for the ships’ small boats, or tenders. The forum says the outer harbour should be looked at for both leisure craft and for providing greater opportunities for commercial craft as well as encouraging more out-of-season activities and visits. It also wants to see a sailing training facility and a diving school at the harbour. The forum feels facilities in the harbour area should be seen “as one of the key tourist attractions in Scarborough and facilities in this area should reflect this”. It was one of a number of organisations consulted over the future use of the ports as part of a document entitled Ports Strategy – Charting a Course for the Future, which was drawn up by John Riby, Scarborough Council’s head of engineering and harbour services. Talks were held between businesses, local organisations, town councils, tourism interest groups, area committees, harbour user groups and members of the projects and partnership overview and scrutiny committee. Mr Riby said a draft strategy, first approved by the council cabinet last July, envisaged a total withdrawal from commercial cargo businessat Whitby, a growth in leisure and tourism-based activities and a consolidation and diversification of the fishing industry facilities at Scarborough and Whitby. The future of Endeavour Wharf at Whitby attracted “considerable interest” and there was an expectation that any new plans at the ports must be carried out in an environmentally and sensitive way with full public and stakeholder engagement. Many were anxious to explore new facilities both onshore and on the water and some organisations want the council to consider opportunities around the cruise market and further Tall Ships events. Although the coastal towns are experiencing a growing reliance on the tourism and leisure industry to boost their economies, the consultations show there is also a desire to preserve the fabric of the ports and the fishing trade. The report will go before the council’s cabinet on Tuesday. Source : Scarborough Evening News

Successful maiden voyage for kite driven cargo vessel

SSG-GÖTEBORG. German Beluga Shipping’s newbuilt heavylift/multipurpose carrier Beluga SkySails of 10,000 DWT, has arrived in Mo-i-Rana in Norway after a 11,952 nautical mile long maiden voyage from Germany via Venezuela and USA. The vessel is equipped with testing equipment for a 160 square metre large kite using wind power to reduce the need of engine output. The voyage is part of a 12-month log pilot phase, with EUR 1.2 million in support from EU. The first voyage has according to SkySails proved that the kite can reduce engine output by 20 per cent in moderate winds. Depending on choise of route and weather conditions, a kite system is expected to save between 10 – 35 per cent of fuel costs. After evaluation the current kite is planned to be exchanged by a new kite, twice as large. With todays fuel prices, the shipowner expects to save up to USD 2,000 per employment day. 20 per cent of the savings will be passed on to the crew. Beluga Shipping also plans to install 600 square metre kites on two 20,000 DWT multipurpose carriers on order.

J. Lauritzen best profit ever SSG-RINGKØBING. J. Lauritzen Group joins the ranks of Danish shipping companies that have declared their profit for 2007 as the best ever. J. Lauritzen had a net profit of USD 342 million (USD 124 million in 2006). Additionally, the company has the largest order book ever, containing 66 units. The profit comes from the four divisions of which Lauritzen Reefers has now been sold off. Lauritzen Bulkers posted revenues of USD 438 million (USD 251 million) and a net profit of USD 326.2 million (USD 86.5 million). Lauritzen Kosan’s revenues were USD 102.9 million (USD 91.5) and its profit was USD 22.9 million (USD 35.2 million). For the last fiscal year, Lauritzen Reefer reported revenues of USD 48.6 million (USD 74.0 million) and a profit of USD 5.8 million (USD 10.1 million). The profit for 2007 contains some USD 79 million from the sale of ships. J. Lauritzen expects the profit for 2008 result to be about the same as in 2007

Djibouti port wins awards for project financing

The port of Djibouti in East Africa has won two international awards for project financing. The Project Finance magazine awarded the Africa Transport-Ports Deal of the Year 2007 to the port and Malaysia's Islamic Finance News presented Djibouti with Best Country Deal award for the Doraleh container terminal financing. The Port of Djibouti is managed by DP World in a joint venture partnership with the Djibouti government. It is developing the new Doraleh terminal, where operations are due to begin early next year. The development is being financed through a Sharia-compliant financing arrangement. In January, the World Bank provided its first-ever guarantee for Sharia-compliant project financing. The $427 million guarantee supports investments into the new container terminal, which is expected to significantly improve port facilities and help the country become a major business hub. Abdourahman Boreh, chairman of Djibouti Port and Free Zone Authority, said, "We are delighted Djibouti has been recognised with these awards. They reflect the success of our partnership with DP World." Source : Gulfnews.com

DFDS with much higher profit SSG-RINGKØBING. DFDS is continuing its expansion plan launched last year and with five divisions in the market. Revenues increased 10 per cent in 2007 to a total of DKK 8.3 billion. The pre-tax profit was DKK 526 million, an increase of 31 per cent. It is still the ro-ro division that makes the largest contribution to the group’s revenues. In 2007, the division posted DKK 3.6 billion in revenues and an operating profit of DKK 896 million. The container division generated revenues of DKK 1.6 billion and an operating profit of DKK 151 million. The passenger division had revenues of DKK 1.9 billion and an operating profit of DKK 249 million. The terminal division’s contribution was DKK 703 million in revenue and an operating profit of DKK 15 million. Finally, the trailer service generated revenues of DKK 986 million and posted an operating profit of 57 million. Included in the 2007 profit was a capital gain of DKK 35 million on the sale of the Pont L’abbe, ex Duke of Scandinavia. The sale lowered the average age of the passenger vessels to 19.5 years. At the end of the year, DFDS had 4,427 employees. The J Lauritzen Foundation (Vesterhavet A/S) owned a majority of 56 per cent of the shares. Clipper Group had 7.8 per cent, but increased it shareholding to 10 per cent in February, 2008. Overseas owners account for 9.5 per cent of the shares.

JR Shipping orders two more feederships at Peene Werft

JR Shipping of the Netherlands has ordered a pair of 1,440-teu containerships at Peene Werft as it continues to invest in what the company refers to as new benchmark feeder tonnage for the Baltic. The newbuildings follow an earlier order for two sisterships at Peene Werft, the Emotion and Empire , and a pair of similar-size boxships at another German yard, JJ Sietas. It means JR Shipping is spending a total of around EUR 167m ($253m) on these six new vessels and, once delivered, will be close to achieving its ambition of a 30-ship fleet. Orders, however, for a series of 900-teu boxships in Turkey have been cancelled because of difficulties at the yard. JR Shipping managing director and 50% shareholder Sander Schakelaar says delivery of the latest ships at Peene Werft are slated for December 2009 and the first quarter of 2010. No price has been disclosed but it is understood to be close to the EUR 32.5m each published in the company's investment brochure for the Emotion and Empire . JR Shipping raises equity from shareholders through the Dutch CV (limited partnership) system. The Emotion is pencilled in for delivery in August 2008 and the Empire in August 2009. Charter possibilities for the first vessel are being discussed but marketing of the second has yet to start. JR Shipping's ice-class Baltic-max newbuildings at JJ Sietas, the Elysee and Elegance , are a new class of feeder containership. They are open top, have a maximum draught for the region of 9.5 metres and are being built to the highest ice class E4, equivalent to 1A Super. Delivery of those newbuildings, the 11th and 12th for JJ Sietas in its so-called 178-type series, is slated for January and February 2010. Schakelaar denies he has "switched" builders for his latest ships. "We regard ourselves as friends of both yards and will continue to be supportive of both," he said. He adds that JR Shipping's strategy is to take a strong position in this upcoming segment of Baltic-max feederships. Peene Werft and JJ Sietas are the two yards offering competitive tonnage. "There are no other options worldwide yet," said Schakelaar. The company says most modern ice-class vessels entering the sector during the past four years have been smaller between 700 teu and 900 teu. But the northern European market is already demanding larger ships that will define a new benchmark. Both those from Peene Werft and JJ Sietas offer similar characteristics including 19-20 knots and around 1,030 boxes at 14 tonnes, as well as comparable loading flexibility and reefer intake. JR Shipping, which currently has a fleet of 21 vessels in service, last year took delivery of five secondhand ships including some from Reedereigruppe Freese in Germany. However, a deal TradeWinds reported previously for half-a-dozen 900-teu newbuildings at Um Deniz Sanayi in Turkey has been dropped. The order involved long-time yard partner Volharding but they were running around one year late and the Turkish yard wanted to restructure. "Mutual agreement" not to proceed with the contracts was reached including unspecified compensation to repay the CV investors involved in funding the project. The solution was only achieved after what Schakelaar describes as a "long year of very hard crisis management". But it was also in the interest of the yard, he says. The first vessel was around 95% complete, the second 70%.

Schakelaar says JR Shipping was "transparent" about the situation and claims its handling of the matter has probably improved the company's image, both with investors and banks. "We did what was in the best interest of third parties and not necessarily in the best interest of our shipping company," he commented. Source : Tradewinds

SFL - Acquisition of two 17,000 dwt chemical tankers in combination with 10 year charters

Ship Finance International Limited, announced that it has agreed to acquire two 17,000 dwt chemical tankers newbuildings based on a total purchase price of $60.2 million, or $30.1 million per vessel. The vessels are expected to be delivered from the shipyard in March and August 2008, and will then commence a 10 year bareboat charter to Bryggen Shipping & Trading AS ("Bryggen" or the "Charterer"), a Norwegian-based privately owned chemical tanker company. The agreed bareboat charter rate will be $8,000 per vessel per day, and at the end of the charter period, Bryggen is granted a fixed price purchase option of $20 million per vessel. Bryggen has sub-chartered the vessels for 10 years on a bareboat charter to Sinochem International (holding) Co. Ltd. ("Sinochem"), a leading China-based chemical logistics provider, listed in Shanghai. The transaction will be financed with a 10-year senior loan facility of USD 49 mill. and an equity contribution of USD 11.2 mill. The interest rate has been swapped to fixed rate for the entire loan period and the average annual net cash contribution after estimated interest expense and debt repayment is estimated to approximately $1.4 mill. This transaction is another verification of Ship Finance's strategy to diversify both the asset base and the customer portfolio with new profitable transactions. These vessels are the first chemical tankers in our portfolio, and we anticipate further growth opportunities in this segment. Source : Hellenic Shipping Times

Kuwait Oil puts out VLCC tender South Korean yards are said to be frontrunners for the big tanker series. Kuwait Oil Tanker Co (KOTC) is preparing to order a raft of new tankers in South Korea as it continues to dispose of older vessels. KOTC officials tell TradeWinds that the company has put out tenders with shipyards in Asia for four VLCCs. At the same time, it is drawing up specifications for two aframax tankers it also wants to order. South Korean yards are being tipped as the frontrunners for the orders. KOTC has a long-standing relationship with these yards, which have built all of the company's ships over the past two decades. TradeWinds understands that KOTC would like to get its vessels as soon as possible but the yards are only offering delivery dates in 2011. The company has only just taken delivery of two VLCCs it ordered from Hyundai Heavy Industries as part of a $525m, seven-ship package, ranging in size from LPG carriers to crude and products tankers, contracted at various South Korean yards in 2004. The company first mooted the possibility of ordering the four VLCCs and two aframax tankers as far back as 2005 but at the time, was put off by the high newbuilding prices and the lack of suitable delivery slots. KOTC wants the new tonnage to replace four single-hull VLCCs that date from the early 1990s. Now that KOTC has taken delivery of three 69,000-dwt products tankers from Daewoo Shipbuilding&Marine Engineering, it is looking to offload at least two of its older 66,000-dwt single-hull products tankers built by CSBC in Taiwan. The company is said to be inviting inspections on the Warbah and Keefan (both built 1982). Brokers say the vessels could be of interest to Chinese bulker-conversion buyers. KOTC's fleet consists of 12 products tankers, eight VLCCs and three LPG carriers with a combined capacity of over 3.4 million dwt. Source : Tradewinds

French shipping group CMA CGM 2007 profit up 58 pct

French shipping group CMA CGM said on Friday its 2007 net profit rose 58 percent to $966 million as it launched 42 new services throughout the world and took delivery of 98 new vessels. The company said sales rose 40 percent to $11.8 billion. Stripping out acquisitions, growth was 35 percent, it said. CMA CGM's fleet is now composed of 384 group-operated ships with a carrying capacity of 913,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) compared with 698,000 at the end of 2006. It said the container fleet grew 28 percent in 2007 for a total of 1,535,000 TEU. In the statement, Chairman Jacques Saade was quoted as saying the company was preparing for "the arrival of a new generation of large vessels in our fleet which will represent a new era for the maritime shipping industry and for CMA CGM". CMA CGM competes with companies such as A.P. Moller-Maersk and Evergreen Marine Corp. A CMA CGM spokesman said earlier this week the company was not interested in acquiring Germany's Hapag-Lloyd amid speculation it could be split off from parent group Tui. MSC upbeat on prospects with latest charter trio

Containership supremo Gianluigi Aponte is ignoring gloomy economic indicators for the next year or so by accepting a higher rate to fix three post-panamax ships for a shorter period than he could get on a longer charter. The boss of Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has decided to charter three 5,760-teu vessels owned by Erick Rickmers's Hamburg-based company, ER Schiffahrt, for four years at a punchy $39,000 per day. The vessels ER London , ER Amsterdam and ER Felixstowe (all built 2000) are currently chartered by Maersk Line and will not be delivered to MSC until late 2008 or early 2009. Aponte is reckoned to have as good a feeling for market direction as anyone in the container sector, so the confidence he is showing for conditions in the period between 2009 and 2012 will give others more belief in future prospects. MSC is not the only carrier busy fixing big boxships. Israeli line Zim Integrated Shipping Services is continuing to force its way to the top table of big charterers. It will charter two 4,300-teu newbuildings, the Bahia and Benito , due in 2009 for five years at a rate of $29,750 per day. Zim has an option to take them for another two years. French carrier CMA CGM has, as expected, fixed the 3,500-teu newbuilding Nordautumn from owner Reederei Nord Klaus Oldendorff at $31,000 per day. This is a strong but lower rate than was predicted last month for a five-year charter and not above the $32,000 brokers had initially suggested. The vessel is due to be delivered in April from STX Shipbuilding in South Korea but it does not look as if the sister Nordwinter , set for delivery in June, will also go to CMA CGM, as the rate, expensive compared with that for the Bahia and Benito , likely reflects the carrier's need to fill a specific network gap. Brokers say it is a good sign that major carriers are still seeking large vessels for this year, despite growing pessimism that trade growth will slow down in 2008, particularly if the US slides into recession. Singapore-based Pacific International Lines (PIL) has also gone big and long by its scale chartering the 2,700-teu newbuilding Pontresina for four years at $26,150 per day, most likely for use on the expanding Asia-Australia trade. Brostrom extends partnership - sells 37,000 dwt tanker

Brostrom has reached an agreement with partner and Swedish ship owner Furetank Rederi AB to extend the co-operation into the handy size segment, whereby the 37,000 dwt product tanker BRO ERIK is being sold to Furetank. The sale generates a profit before tax of about SEK 65 million and a net cash contribution of about SEK 140 million. The partnership between Brostrom and Furetank dates back to the beginning of 2005 when Brostrom acquired the Danish commercial ship operator company Nordtank Shipping now operating under the name of Brostrom Tankers Denmark A/S. Simultaneously Brostrom invested in parts of individual intermediate sized vessels controlled by Furetank, contributing to the long term relation under which Brostrom has been awarded the commercial management of all Furetank vessels. With the sale the partnership between Brostrom and Furetank has been extended into the handy size segment. The BRO ERIK will continue to be commercially operated by Brostrom and delivery of the vessel to Furetank is expected to take place in May 2008. Later this year Brostrom will grow its appearance in the European handy size segment by the delivery of further eight product tankers of 37,000 dwt each to Claus Peter Offen (CPO Tankers). This will lead to a doubling of Brostrom’s European commercial fleet to a total of 16 handy size (37,000 dwt) vessels before the end of the year. With the 47 small and intermediate tankers presently trading in Europe and expected delivery of four newbuildings, the total Brostrom fleet in European waters will contain more than 65 vessels before the end of 2008, with an average age of only six years. Essar may buy five ships for $550 million The Ruia-promoted Essar Shipping (ESL) which has primarily been transporting crude oil through tankers, is planning to acquire four dry-bulk carriers in the next financial year to capitalise on the rising trade of commodities such as iron ore and coal. It also plans to acquire one more very large crude carrier (VLCC) in the next financial year, primarily to take care of the expected rise in its captive demand from Essar Energy Holding. The five vessels would cost the company up to $550 million. Essar Shipping & Logistics (ESLL), a 36 per cent stake holder in ESL, has already placed orders for six Supermax bulk carriers and six mini -cape bulk carriers for $210 million and $390 million, respectively, in the current financial year. ESL now plans to acquire a total of sixteen bulk carriers with the new planned order for four in the next financial year. The Baltic Dry Index, the benchmark for freight rates for bulk carriers, touched an all-time high of 11,039 on November 13, 2007, up from around 2704 on March 10, 2006. This reflects the rising demand for bulk carriers. After correction in the prices, the index was 8346 on March 12 this year. ''The higher trade of iron ore and coal from countries such as China and India has fuelled the demand for bulk carriers,'' said Vikram Suryavanshi, analyst with Karvy Stock Broking, a Mumbai-based brokerage. The company currently has total capacity of 1.32 million deadweight tonnage (dwt) of owned capacity, of which 0.58 million dwt is of twenty three vessels used for coastal transportation. It is the rest of 0.7 million dwt consisting of three tankers (two VLCC and one Suzemax) that is used on longer routes. The twelve bulk carriers for which the order has been placed would add around 0.95 million dwt taking the total owned capacity to 2.27 million dwt. These twelve vessels are

expected to be delivered from December 2009 onward to January 2012. ''We are planning to acquire five vessels in the next financial,'' said Sanjay Mehta, managing director, Essar Shipping. ''It could be newly built or in- water or combination of both,'' he added. It usually takes twelve months for a new vessel to be delivered from a shipyard. However, the rising demand for such vessels has created a waiting period of eighteen to twenty four months. This has also pushed the price of old vessels higher as it would provide instant earning. The company plans to acquire two capesize bulkers for which it has kept a target of $260 million, similarly for two Supramax, it has the target cost of $140 million and for one VLCC it has the target cost of $150 million. ''We expect 75-80 per cent of financing for these five vessels through debt and 20-25 per cent through equity,'' he added. The company did not disclose the capacity that it was likely to add with these five new vessels. India's largest private shipping company Great Eastern Shipping has a fleet of 47 vessels with an aggregate capacity of 3.14 million dwt. GE Shipping has placed orders for 12 new vessels which includes 4 oil product carriers and 8 dry bulk carriers with delivery starting from 2008-09 to 2011-12. Source : Hellenic Shipping Times

Unprofitable Cambridge container terminal closes

After 20 years of service, Cambridge’s CX container terminal has been shut down as dwindling volumes have rendered it unprofitable. All container trains have been rerouted to East London port, where the containers are off-loaded by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), in a move that Transnet officials say will increase efficiency. But the change has already angered some clients, who claim all door-to-door container deliveries will be discontinued by month-end. Transnet Freight Rail’s spokesperson, Mike Asefovitz, said their container service for East London was transferred to Port Terminals in October last year. “There has been a decline in volumes, and the cost of running the terminal was exceeding the income generated. There is also no growth of rail volumes projected,” he said. To continue rendering a rail service to its 18 existing customers, Transnet would handle the rail volumes in East London port, Asefovitz said. “Containers are offloaded from rail by Port Terminals in East London port. Existing customers are not affected by the closing down of Cambridge terminal, as the rail service has not been discontinued.” The Cambridge train depot will continue operating as the city’s main train shunting yard. An East London warehouse manager and Transnet client, Frik Harmse, said he was told that containers would no longer be delivered on their doorstep from April 1. “We will have to transport the containers from the port ourselves, which is very costly. It will be easier to send our goods from Johannesburg by road,” he said. But Asefovitz said that the door-to-door service would continue from the port. TPT East London’s business unit manager, Robert van Rooyen, said CX containers represented less than 0.1% of the annual container volumes handled by the terminal. “Indications we have received from Transnet Freight Rail is that they don’t expect the CX container volumes to increase. We would therefore not be increasing terminal capacity for CX container volumes, seeing as the volumes handled are small in relation to our key container exports and imports,” he said. FIRST CARGO SHIP ANCHORS OFF GWADAR The first cargo ship carrying 73,000 tons of wheat from Canada arrived at the Gwadar port on Friday. The ship was anchored about 18 kilometres offshore because the port cannot yet handle such a heavy ship. Chairman of the Gwadar Deep Sea Port Admiral Ehsan Saeed said that small vessels would take wheat to Karachi while trucks would transport the grain to areas in Balochistan and Sindh. After the ship is offloaded, it would be brought to the port. Balochistan’s caretaker Chief Minister Sardar Mohammad Saleh Bhootani and senior officials visited the vessel. Sardar Bhootani said that the Gwadar port would make markets in Central Asia globally accessible, besides providing a way to the world for energy resources. Highlighting commercial prospects of the Gwadar port, Admiral Saeed said that initially it would handle 100,000 containers, 300,000 tons of general cargo and half a million ton of foodgrains. The caretaker chief minister also presided over a meeting of the board of directors of the Balochistan Coastal Development Authority. Decisions were taken to make the Balochistan coastline more attractive for tourists. Source : Imran Farooq

Crane vessel Saipem 7000 was moved out of drydock no. 7 at the Keppel Verolme yard at Rozenburg.

With the help of tugs Smit Elbe, Smit Mersey, Texelbank, Thamesbank, Smit Zweden & Smit Rusland she was carefully nudged out of the drydock, with just 20 cm to spare on either side.

The Saipem 7000 will remain at Keppel Verolme for another two weeks before moving to the Europort for tests. It

was the first time in 20 years that the Saipem 7000 was drydocked. Photo : Hans Hoffmann ©
