Marriott’s Smoke-Free Policy

We would like to remind our guests that since October 2006, all Marriott hotels in North America are smoke-free. In addition, the City of Philadelphia prohibits smoking in all lobbies, hallways, sleeping quarters and other common areas of all lodging establishments.

When we establish that a guestroom has been smoked in, we perform a thorough and extensive room recovery/cleaning of the room so that we can return it to its previous smoke-free condition. If we determine that smoking occurred in your guestroom, your credit card will be charged our standard $250 room recovery fee per occurrence.

We have provided a designated smoking area outside of the hotel. It is located outside of the Filbert Street entrance.

We thank you for your cooperation and are pleased to provide you with a smoke-free environment. Should you have any questions about our smoke-free hotel environment, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

What are we playing?By Lynn Berg

Today’s question - “What are we playing?” - might seem too simple to you, but think again. By law, both partners must have identical convention cards filled out and available to the opponents. Failure to provide a useful card when asked can lead to director calls and penalties. At the extreme, you could be prohibited from using conventions until this requirement is fulfilled.

Even an established partnership should periodically compare notes to make sure that their agreements haven’t changed, that the card adequately represents your actual practices. For example, what if you still have 16-18 high-card points on your card as your opening 1NT range but lately, both of you have been shading down to 15 HCP fairly often. Change your card and your announcement (the notrump range is on blue lines, indicating the need for a verbal notice to the opponents) so the opponents will get accurate information.

Take the time at least once a quarter to go through the card box by box. Now, as you come to play in a national tournament is a good time, of course. In an established partnership, this will be a quick process, but it’s worthwhile to remind yourself of your less commonly used agreements even if it turns out you don’t need to change anything. Perhaps you’ve added a new convention or modified an old one and forgotten to put it on the card. This review is worth the time it takes.

There is a great utility for filling out the convention card on the ACBL website. If you have time, download this information and have it at hand when you review your agreements or create new ones. (Go to the ACBL home page. The second topic from the left is “Learn and Improve.” The third item under that topic is conventions and cards, and that’s where you’ll find “completing your convention card.”)

Don’t have time? You can consult any game director about what needs to go on the card. Just don’t try to ask the person busy selling entries five minutes before game time.

If you’re playing with a new partner, be assured you’ll miss something, especially if you’re in a hurry. Don’t talk just about the “sexier” stuff on the front of the card. Take the

time to cover the boxes on the back. It’s a mistake to consume so much time discussing responses to 2♣ openings that you don’t have time to address the question of bidding after the opponent’s takeout double. Which of these events do you think happens more often? Don’t skimp on the carding boxes at the bottom of the back of the card. You’ll probably be defending at least half the time on most days.

Inevitably something will come up that you haven’t discussed. And that’s the very time the opponents will ask you about partner’s bid. If you have no agreement, don’t speculate. Just say, “We have not discussed this.” Then quit talking. If the opponents persist, don’t give in to their wish that you guess, just call the director. It could be that you know that you have an agreement, but can’t remember what is on the card. You can then refer them to the card. (See why it should be accurate?) When you call the director, you might be sent away from the table to allow your partner to explain your agreement. Be wise and don’t guess. Any misinformation when you guess could injure the opponents and lead to an adjusted score.

It’s important to remember the ethics of Alerts and explanations (and their absence). Anything one of you says at the table is for the benefit of the opponents and not for your partner. Partner may not take advantage of the fact that you failed to Alert or Announce, nor may he listen to your explanation and thus modify his

idea of what is going on. To do so is cheating. At the top levels of competition, there is

actually a barrier across the table so that the only person you see is one of your opponents. There’s no verbal Alert or explanation, and each person notifies the opponent on his side of the screen as needed. When that impediment is missing, you must still act as if it were there to be ethical.

When there’s any question about agreements, Alerts or explanations, call the director before there’s unauthorized information. It’s never wrong to call the director when there’s a question and you can save yourself from penalties if you do. “Director, please!” is the best way to call.

Opening lead: ♣3.Bidding commentary: West has a choice

of non-forcing rebids (unless 2♦ is played as a game force): 2NT or 3♦. Given the weakness of the diamonds, 2NT is superior. Notice that one choice is not 3♥. In order to raise

a secondary suit directly, four-card support is needed. This is an important bidding principle. As it happens, whether West rebids 2NT or 3♦, East rebids 3♥ to show a five-card suit and responder happily raises to game.

Lead commentary: South’s spade holding suggests a trump lead to stop spade ruffs in dummy, but his diamond holding suggests the more attacking club lead.

Defensive commentary: When dummy plays low at trick one, North plays the jack. The lead of a low card suggests an honor, and the only honor not visible is the king. After the defense cashes three clubs, both defenders know that East, who has shown 10 major-suit cards during the auction, has a diamond void. Furthermore, whoever winds up on lead after three clubs have been cashed should shift to a trump to stop spade ruffs. A trump switch combined with North not playing the ♦A when a low diamond is led from dummy, defeats 4♥.

Play Commentary: If the defenders do not shift to a trump after winning three clubs, declarer gets home on a cross-ruff, but must cash the two top spades before crossruffing.

Robert Hartman, ACBL’s chief executive, poses with his mother, Arlene Hartman, an enthusiastic new player.

You (North) start with the ♦K. The singleton diamond in the East hand is not a welcome sight. How do you proceed?

At least two defenders – Billy Eisenberg and my partner, Glenn Milgrim – found the play to

collect the maximum penalty: the ♠K.After that play, declarer could win the ace,

but if he ruffed a diamond with dummy’s queen, the trump trick Milgrim seemingly gave up would come back. On a low spade switch, declarer could put up the queen, ruff out the ♣A, then ruff a diamond low and take a discard on the ♣Q to finish two down.

At my table and Eisenberg’s – and likely a few others – the end result was plus 500, good for 44 out of 51 matchpoints.

Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. Both cards of a partnership must be identical and include the first and last names of each member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Whither the queen? Who cares!

On this deal from the Morehead Grand National Teams, Championship Flight, Michael Schreiber played expertly to land a vulnerable game that was defeated at the other table. In the end, the ♠Q was a key card, but Schreiber didn’t care which opponent had it. If the layout was as he figured it, the queen’s location was immaterial. This was the deal (spots approximate): Dlr: West ♠ K J 8 2 Vul: N-S ♥ J 9 7 2 ♦ A 10 ♣ 8 7 3 ♠ 10 7 5 ♠ Q 9 ♥ Q 8 ♥ 10 4 3 ♦ K Q 9 8 6 5 ♦ 7 3 2 ♣ K 6 ♣ Q J 10 9 2 ♠ A 6 4 3 ♥ A K 6 5 ♦ J 4 ♣ A 5 4 West North East South 2♦ Pass 3♦ Dbl Pass 4♦ Pass 4♥ All Pass

Schreiber was playing with Jim Munday and representing District 10.

West started with the ♦K, taken in dummy with the ace. Schreiber cashed his top hearts, dropping West’s queen, and played a third round to dummy’s jack. Now the ♦10 went to Schreiber’s jack and West’s queen.

When West switched to the ♣K, Schreiber ducked. A second club went to East’s 9 and Schreiber’s ace.

Stopping to consider what the play to that point had revealed, Schreiber figured that West had started with six diamonds, two hearts and two clubs – leaving him with three spades. In that case, East had two spades, three hearts, three diamonds and five clubs.

On that layout, Schreiber knew he could not go down if he played correctly.

Accordingly, he cashed the ♠A and played a spade to the king, dropping East’s queen. He was then able to claim plus 620.

Had East followed low to the second round of spades, Schreiber would then have put West in with the ♠Q. Down to all diamonds, West would have had to give Schreiber a ruff-sluff, taking care of Schreiber’s losing club.

The well-played deal was worth 12 IMPs to the District 10 team in a losing effort.

Missed opportunitiesBy Barry Rigal

On this deal from the first qualifying session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs, declarer missed a chance to falsecard that would have made the defense a bit tougher – and he missed the winning line of play after that. The beneficiaries of declarer’s missteps were Buddy Hanby and Sally Wheeler. Dlr: West ♠ 5 Vul: None ♥ K J 10 7 6 ♦ J 9 ♣ J 9 7 4 2 ♠ Q 9 8 6 4 2 ♠ 10 7 3 ♥ 9 8 ♥ 5 4 3 2 ♦ 10 ♦ A K 8 4 2 ♣ K 10 8 6 ♣ Q ♠ A K J ♥ A Q ♦ Q 7 6 5 3 ♣ A 5 3 West North East South Hanby Wheeler Pass 2♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

Wheeler started with the ♦K: 3, 10, 9. Had declarer been aware of his opponents’ signaling methods, he could have followed with the ♦J instead of the 9. Wheeler knew that her partner would not play the ♦10 from J-10, so at trick two she shifted to the ♦2. Hanby ruffed and returned the ♣6. As it happens, it doesn’t matter which of his low clubs declarer plays, but he inserted the 9, which drew Wheeler’s queen. Declarer took the ace, pulled trumps and entered dummy with a spade to the ace. When he played a club, Hanby could win the king and drive out the jack, taking the setting trick with the 8.

Even if declarer had played a low club, going to dummy to lead up to the jack would have led to defeat. West could simply insert the ♣8. With no further entry to dummy, declarer would eventually have been forced to lead away from his ♣J into West’s ♣K 10.

Declarer can make the contract, however, by running his trumps, coming down to this ending, with the last trump to be played. ♠ 5 ♥ 7 ♦ — ♣ J 9 7 4 ♠ Q 9 8 ♠ 10 7 3 ♥ — ♥ — ♦ — ♦ A 8 4 ♣ K 10 8 ♣ — ♠ A K J ♥ — ♦ Q ♣ 5 3

North plays the ♥7, discarding the ♦Q from dummy, and West is in trouble. If he lets go of a spade, dummy’s three spades will be good, and declarer can lead up to the ♣J at the end for 10 tricks. A club discard allows declarer to enter dummy with the ♠A and lead up to his ♣J, taking three club tricks or a club and two spades.

Paris in 1969 by students seeking greater freedom of expression.

Most of the French players who have become regulars at the NABCs have had success in European tournaments previously. Bessis has done well in Junior competition in Europe and was a member of the winning squad in the World Transnational Open Teams in Shanghai, China, five years ago.

He made a splash in Reno in 2010, winning the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams playing with his father, Michel. Earlier this year, Bessis was again a Vanderbilt winner, this time playing with Australian star Ishmael Del’Monte. The two came in second in the Kay Platinum Pairs at the same tournament.

Qualifications for teams participating in the Grand National Teams Flights B and C were earned in local-level events earlier this year.

Flight B winners will have their names engraved on the Sheinwold Trophy while the names of Flight C winners will be engraved on the Mac Nab Trophy.

Alfred SheinwoldAlfred Sheinwold

(1912-1997) was one of the greatest bridge writers in the history of the game. He was inducted into the Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

His syndicated bridge column was considered by many to be the best. He had a knack for getting his point across to even the least experienced players. He managed this by making sure that every column had only one main point, marking it easier for his readers to focus.

“You could read a Sheinwold column and know in an instant that nobody else could have written it,” said Frank Stewart, co-author of the column. “He enlightened and entertained players through seven decades and earned millions of fans.”

Sheinwold was an editor of The Bridge World from 1934 to 1963 and editor of The Bridge Bulletin from 1953 to 1958. He was also the author of perhaps the most successful bridge book ever written, 5 Weeks to Winning Bridge, a book that sold in the millions.

Sheinwold served as chairman of the ACBL Laws Commission from 1964 to 1975, as chairman of the appeals committees at NABCs and as chairman of the ACBL Board of Governors from 1970 to 1973. He was named ACBL Honorary Member of the Year in 1983.

Robin Mac NabRobin Mac Nab

(1915-1985) served as a member of the ACBL Board of Directors from 1956 to 1981. He was ACBL president in 1965. He was a past president of the Western Conference, a member of the ACBL Laws Commission and a member of the executive council of the World Bridge Federation.

Mac Nab, a graduate of Cornell University, was a member of the U.S. Olympic track and field squad in 1936.

The Grand National Teams is a North American contest with all 25 ACBL districts participating.

In 1985, the event was subdivided into three separate events: Flights A, B and C. Another change came in 2001 when the GNT Championship Flight (for players with more than 5000 masterpoints) was created. Flight A is now a 0-5000 event.

The winners of the Championship Flight will have their names engraved on the Morehead Trophy, donated by The New York Times in memory of its longtime bridge editor Albert H. Morehead. The winners of Flight A will have their names engraved on the Goldman Trophy, named in honor of the late Bobby Goldman.

Albert H. MoreheadMorehead (1909-

1996) was born in Flintstone GA and educated at Baylor and Harvard. Ely Culbertson hired him in 1932 because of his outstanding ability as a player and analyst and made him technical editor of The Bridge World in 1933.

He proved so invaluable that in 1934 he was made general manager of all Culbertson enterprises. He was only 25 when he played on the Culbertson team that defeated the British in the second international match for the Schwab Cup.

Morehead was the first bridge editor of The New York Times with a Sunday column from 1935 and a daily column from 1959. He resigned from the Times late in 1963 to devote full time to writing, editing and publishing of the dictionaries, encyclopedias and thesauruses that made him one of the foremost American lexicographers.

During those years, Morehead found time for tremendous service to organized bridge. He was an officer of the United States Bridge Association when that organization amalgamated with the American Bridge League in 1937.

He became a governor of the newly formed ACBL and served as president in 1943 and chairman of the board from 1943 to 1945. He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1946.

Morehead was a member of the National Laws Commission and was in charge of production of the International Laws of Contract Bridge. He was also the author of the constitution of the World Bridge Federation --- the first formal definition of the scope, structure, powers and duties of that organization.

Morehead was named to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

Bobby GoldmanBobby Goldman

(1938-1999), who became a member of the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, enjoyed a stellar career as a player, author and theorist. His tournament record is impressive. He earned four world titles (the Bermuda Bowl in 1970, 1971 and 1979 and the World Mixed Teams in 1972) and 19 North American championships: the Life Master Men’s Pairs (1964); the Life Master Pairs (1968); the Open B-A-M Teams (1993); the Men’s Teams (1968, 1989 and 1991); the Spingold Knockout Teams (1969, 1978, 1983, 1986 and 1988); the Reisinger B-A-M Teams (1970, 1976 and 1980); the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams (1971, 1973, 1978, 1997 and 1998). Goldman also had 13 second-place finishes in

NABC events. At the time of his induction into the Hall of

Fame, Goldman was an ACBL Grand Life Master with more than 25,700 masterpoints, and ranked ninth on the all-time list of masterpoint holders. He was also a WBF World Grand Master.

Goldman authored several books on the game, including Aces Scientific and Winners and Losers at the Bridge Table. His contributions to bidding theory include Super Gerber, Kickback, Exclusion Blackwood and Goldman after Stayman. He was one of the principal architects of the Aces Scientific System.

Goldman served as ACBL recorder from 1986-1988 and was a longtime member of the Competitions and Conventions Committee. His views on the game helped shape the modern-day Alert procedure, the ACBL convention chart, ethics and the appeals process.

Goldman was honored by the ACBL by being named the 1999 Honorary Member, presented for long and meritorious service to bridge.

Goldman’s early career was distinguished by his association with the now-famous Aces, the professional, Texas-based team created by businessman Ira Corn for the purpose of winning world bridge championships. Goldman was a member of the successful squad until 1974.

Parking at the Philadelphia NABC

Did we mention how easy it is to take a train to Market East Station, which is right under the convention center? The cost is only $1 if you have a Medicare card.

If you are determined to drive:There will be reasonable rates for parking

in the area of the Marriott during the Summer Nationals. Through Parkway Corporation, we have arranged for substantially discounted rates at two sites:• Juniper on Filbert Street between 12th and

13th, immediately behind the Marriott, $15/day. The same rate applies to overnight parking.

• 12th Street on the west (right) side of 12th Street. 1-1/2 blocks of the Marriott, $10/day. This facility may fill up quickly. See alternatives below. If you park at these facilities, you will receive

a ticket when you arrive. When you come to the Marriott, make sure you pick up one of our discounted tickets at the information booth. You will use this ticket when you pay for your parking on the way out. Everett Young, parking chairman, or a committee member will be at the information booth daily for about 1/2 hour before the 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. sessions; also for about 15 minutes after these sessions. Tickets may also be available at the information booth whenever it is manned.

These rates are for all day. There is no time limit. Be aware that “early bird” rates at other lots may appear to be competitive, but the hours usually don’t work with our bridge schedule. Often they require you to be out by 6 p.m.

Other sites of interest include:• At www.philadelphia.centralparking.com you

can print out discount coupons for lots at 11th and Race (right side), or 12th and Sansom (on the left side of the street across from the Parkway lot). Currently the rate is $12 for 12 hours. We will have copies of those coupons available at the information desk.

Longterm parkingThe best deals for longer term, overnight

parking are near the airport. Google discount parking at the airport, Philadelphia, and you’ll find parking rates currently as low as $4/day. These facilities will provide free transportation to the airport. An inexpensive ($3) train from the airport to Market Street East is a half-hour ride.• Discount PHL Parking - $4.25/day at the

Philadelphia Airport. Free shuttle, no service fees. www.globalairportparking.com/PHL

• $4.45 PHL Airport Parking. Safe & Secure Parking 24/7. www.onestopparking.com/PHL

• The parking lot between 15th-16th and on Spring Street (1/2 block south of Vine Street) is $5 evenings after 5 p.m. and $5 on weekends. Savings for those willing to walk 10 minutes.

Reservations closed for Hall of Fame festivitiesThe 2012 Hall of Fame induction will take

place Sunday, July 15, 8 p.m. at Lowes Millenium Hall - across the street from the Marriott. Reservations are no longer being accepted.

The ceremony, which will be emceed by Judi Radin, will honor Kyle Larsen, von Zedtwitz award winner Grant Baze and Blackwood Award winner Jan Martel. Michael Kamil will receive the Sydney H. Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Award, and achievements at 2011 NABCs and world bridge championships will be recognized.

The family-style tapas dinner will feature shrimp cocktail, Philly cheesesteak bruschetta, grilled vegetabables and smoked chicken papaya on toasted onion bread. There will be a cash bar. Coffee and dessert completes the evening.

Bid Box Alerts and Announcements

When using bid boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

InsiderThis message is to all the NABC players

staying at the Marriott. There are two very serious issues facing the ACBL and Marriott guests at this tournament. The first is the number of Members who are smoking at the hotel.

All hotel guests received a letter from the Marriott on this issue. This is a non-smoking hotel. There is not any area within the hotel where smoking is permitted. Not in the guest rooms. Not in the public space. Not in the stairways. Not even outside within 20 feet of the doors.

The Marriott is 100% serious about enforcing these rules. And the ACBL is 100% in support of their enforcement. There are hotel-imposed monetary penalties. There are city fines. Violators may be asked to leave the hotel - not just evicted from their guest room, but prohibited from even re-entering the hotel. This, of course, means no more bridge at this NABC for offenders. Please do not smoke inside the hotel.

The second issue is abuse of concierge lounge privileges.

The hotel reports that many players are leaving the lounge with multiple (over-flowing) plates of food. People are even leaving with bags of food. Also, many guests have asked for, and received, additional room keys in order to provide access to their partners, friends and others.

The hotel has also reported extremely bad behavior, rudeness to staff and other guests and even bullying by players fighting for position in the lines. Any attempts by hotel staff to control this bad behavior have been met with greater levels of hostility from the offenders.

The ACBL planners asked hotel management to depart from general Marriott policy and open the concierge lounge on the weekends as a service to the players. They agreed, knowing how important our Members are, not only to this hotel but to all the other Marriotts around the world.

The abuse of the privileges has been so severe, they are now considering closing the lounge not only on weekends but for the rest of the tournament. They reluctantly agreed to give our players another chance provided each visitor to the lounge can provide identification that they are, in fact, the person who has earned access to the lounge. This will help alleviate the unauthorized access, but we must also improve behavior, reduce the huge amount of food wasted or leaving the lounge, and treat the staff and fellow players in a more civil manner.

We understand bridge can be stressful and frustrating at times. We understand that travel to tournaments is expensive. We understand the amount of money spent at Marriott hotels to reach elite status. But none of this excuses the behavior that has been described to our planners. Please help discourage this type of behavior in others and stop acting this way if you are one of the guilty ones.

A continuation of this bad behavior will not only have a negative impact on your NABC experience here, but will be felt down the line at, at least, the next two NABCs. Not only does the staff of one Marriott hotel talk to staff at future NABC Marriott host hotels, but they talk to the staff at other hotels, as well. Don’t make it harder to promote our group to future NABC sites: Our room rates, our “free” rent for playing space and our relationships with the hotels will only suffer. Slow play: the curse of the game

Patty Johnson, Sebring FL, is a National Tournament Director and the Director-in-Charge for all District 9 (Florida) tournaments.

An old tournament director friend of mine, John “Spider” Harris, was famous for the saying: “Slow play is the curse of the game.” Nothing is more frustrating for tournament directors than having to herd players along like cattle when slow play isn’t actually the problem.

If you take a moment to think about it, most of your opponents do not take that long to bid or play a deal -- yet before you know it, the round is being called and you are nowhere near finished with the last board.

Here are some suggestions which, if followed, would solve many of our problems.

First: do not post mortem between deals whether you are in a pair game or a Swiss team event. Finish the round and then discuss hands if there is still time. We, as directors, will not cut your time but I think you will find yourselves under less pressure by following this suggestion. Remember: we provide hand records in pair games so you don’t have to worry about forgetting a particular holding.

Second: if you are on opening lead, make your lead before recording the contract in your private score. You will have plenty of time after leading to record the information and still see the entire first trick.

Third: unless you have a legitimate reason to leave the table, such as the restroom or a smoke break, please remain at the table and visit with your opponents. You might actually find this enjoyable and a new way to make friends or future Swiss team partnerships.

I wish we could make these suggestions into rules enforceable by penalty but none of us wants a bridge event decided by the pair with the fewest penalties. All I can do as a director is to ask the cooperation and help of all players because I think not only you but everyone else will enjoy their tournaments more.

Remember: those who enjoy a tournament will continue to play. Do your part to make bridge enjoyable for yourself, your partner and your opponents -- you can’t play without them.

Electronic Device PolicyThe electronic device policy is revised as

follows:1. For all NABC+ rated events at NABCs:

Electronic devices, including but not limited to, phones, cameras, PDAs, and others capable of sending or receiving electronic communication are excluded from the playing areas during any session of play. This does not apply to health-related equipment.

2. For all events at an NABC other than a NABC+ rated event: Except for health-related equipment, or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, cell phones, audible pagers or similar equipment may not be operated or operable in any manner in the playing area during a session of play. Any such equipment must not be visible during the session. Sponsoring organizations of other ACBL-sanctioned events are encouraged to adopt a similar policy.

3. These restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above apply to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders (except those designated by ACBL) and kibitzers and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

4. A violation of any of the restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above will result in a disciplinary penalty of one full board (12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

Today’s Bridge Events

David Treadwell Memorial Stratified Open Pairs

We are delighted to sponsor this event in honor of our father, David R. Treadwell. What set him apart in the bridge world wasn’t his masterpoint total (nearly 26,000) or his honors (ACBL Hall of Fame, two North American Championships, etc.) or his integrity (National Appeals Committee). What set him apart was his sheer love of the game he played for 80 years (that’s not a misprint) and the talented people

who play it. And, oh yes, his jokes and puns and pranks. But let’s not go there. Deal the hand …

David Treadwell, Jr. and Martha Karlovetz

Dave Morrow Memorial Flight A/X Swiss Teams

Today, we remember David J. Morrow. Dave was an indescribable force of nature. Many bridge players met Dave outside in the smoking area, enjoying his sudden smile, whimsical witticisms and audacious observations. He developed his

unique way of expressing himself over a 27-year career as a journalist and executive editor. Although Dave took up the game of bridge later in life, he played every hand with creativity and passion. Dave possessed a generous streak. He loved life best sharing his greatest passion: drinking amazing bottles of red wine. And so, after today’s game, let us raise our glasses to honor his spirit for life - a life taken too soon from us at 49 years of age young.
