NORCECA WOMEN'S CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2013

Visit Omaha NORCECA Women's Continental ChampionshipDay 3 Recap * Sept. 18, 2013 * Ralston Arena

Dominican Sweeps Trinidad & Tobago

Dominican Republic swept Trinidad & Tobago 25-13, 25-20, 25-13 Wednesday on the final day of pool play at the Visit Omaha NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship at Ralston Arena.

Dominican Republic captured Pool A with a 2-0 record and 10 points. Trinidad & Tobago, which ended the group stage with a 1-1 record and three points, will play in Thursday’s quarterfinals as the second-place team from Pool A.

Bethania de La Cruz led Dominican Republic with 18 points, including four aces and four blocks. Prisilla Rivera added 12 points and Annerys Vargas Valdez contributed 10 points. Trinidad & Tobago was paced by Channon Thompson’s 10 points and Krystle Esdelle chipped in nine points.

Dominican Republic benefited from 25 Trinidad & Tobago errors while limited its own miscues to seven for the match. Dominican Republic held margins in all three scoring categories: 35-30 in kills, 7-5 in blocks and 8-4 in aces. Dominican Republic’s Brenda Castillo had 17 of her team’s 32 digs in the match.

“The second set score was due to Trinidad & Tobago,” Dominican Republic captain de La Cruz said. “They are a better team than they have been in the past and they showed that in the second set. We just have to be ready for that.”

“The plan today was to improve our serving, which we did,” Trinidad & Tobago coach Francisco Cruz said. “The Dominican Republic is at a much higher level. The Trinidad team is a very young team so there is a lot to work on.”

Puerto Rico Slips Past Canada in Five

Puerto Rico trimmed Canada 19-25, 28-26, 25-23, 13-25, 15-8 Wednesday afternoon in the Visit Omaha NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship being held at Ralston Arena through Saturday.

Puerto Rico won Pool C with a 2-0 record and eight points, while Canada concluded the stage in second place with a 1-1 record and seven points. Both teams will play in the quarterfinal round on Thursday.

Karina Ocasio and Aurea Cruz led Puerto Rico with 21 points each, while their captain Yarimar Rosa contributed 17 points in the victory. Canada was led by Jaimie Thibeault’s 18 points, while teammates Tabitha Love and Lisa Barclay produced 16 and 15 points, respectively. Puerto Rico held a 62-53 margin in kills, but Canada held significant advantages in blocks (14-10) and aces (7-4). Further, the Canadians benefited from 33 Puerto Rican errors and held their own errors to 24.

“It was harder than we expected,” Puerto Rico captain Yarimar Rosa said. “We knew it was going to be hard. We were really trying to get the victory in three or four sets, but we’re happy we got the victory.”

“It was fun,” Puerto Rico coach Jose Mieles said. “No matter how tight the match is, we’re always playing with heart and it’s always fun to play. We have to clean up a lot of errors. We made too many and to compete at this level we have to clean those up.”

“We had a great start in the fifth set, I think it was 5-2, and all of a sudden we stopped playing,” Canada coach Arnd Ludwig said. “There were a few good serves from their side and we went down a little. I think this is something that we have to learn from; always try to keep the same pace and don’t have so many ups and downs.”

United States Blocks Cuba to Win Pool

The United States used a 11-2 block advantage to defeat Cuba 25-9, 25-13, 25-12 to conclude Pool B of the Visit Omaha NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship on Wednesday evening at Ralston Arena.

The U.S., the defending champion of the biennial NORCECA Championship, won Pool B with a 2-0 record and 10 points. The Americans earned a direct ticket to the semifinals on Friday as one of the top two pool winners.

Cuba, the youngest team in the nine-team tournament field with an average age of 19.7, ended pool play with a 0-2 record with two points. They will play in the 7-9 classification round starting with a contest versus St. Lucia on Thursday.

The U.S. was led by Lauren Gibbemeyer’s 13 points that included a team-high five blocks. Kelly Murphy added 11 points in the victory. Cuba was topped by Jennifer Alvarez and Melissa Vargas with five points each.

The United States held a 41-18 advantage in kills and 6-1 margin in aces during the match. The Americans, ranked No. 2 in the world, limited their errors to 13 for the match.

“I thought that tonight we did a really good job putting pressure on Cuba and focusing on our side of the net,” U.S. captain Kristin Hildebrand said. “We played really clean for the majority of the match. We had a lot of people come off the bench and make great contributions. The crowd was awesome. It was fun to see more people come out and we’re hoping it will keep growing. One of the things we’ve been emphasizing the whole year is serving tough. I think we can always serve tougher and tougher.”
