is critical to the health of the arts sector...It would be tragic if the arts community allowed itself to be

used to block the significant health legislation which is now being proposed to address tobacco -caused

death and disease." Among those present at the news conference

to proclaim their opposition to tobacco -industry sponsorship were solo artist Andrew Cash,

children's entertainers Sharon Hampson and Bram Morrison (Sharon, Lois & Bram) and lyricist Elaine

Campbell.

Cash spoke of the power of the major breweries in the music industry, noting "What we see today is

an industry that cannot survive without sponsorship from beer companies. I can't play a gig anywhere

without being involved with beer -company sponsorship at some level. I want to have a choice."

Cash noted that tobacco -sponsorship of young bands now will mean a greater presence of tobacco -

industry money in the business in the future. "Sponsorship is as addictive as the product being

advertised." The organizers also played a video tape,

containing similar thoughts from Anton Kuerti, June

Callwood, Mendelson Joe and Nancy White. Callwood noted that standing up to the tobacco

sponsorship could make for very difficult financial times for some artists, "but we have to take a

principled stand...Having principles can be a very expensive business."

Lorraine Fry, who presided over the news conference, noted that tobacco companies contribute

approximately $25 million to not -for-profit arts groups across Canada each year, less than 5% of

the sector's total income. The coalition argued that an additional 2 cent tax on each pack of cigarettes

sold in Canada could raise $56 million for the arts.

Irving Azoff marks new beginning with Revolution Giant Records owner and founder Irving Azoff is

once again making noise in the industry. The musical entrepreneur has changed the name of the Giant label

to Revolution, and has revised the label's executive staff and musical direction.

Along with Azoff, newly appointed senior creative executive Missy Worth will oversee the new label's revised management and direction.

Revolution has also recently signed comprehensive distribution agreements with Warner Bros./WEA for

the US, and BMG internationally. Revolution is attempting to invoke a new

method of management involving a very loose corporate structure. Notes Worth, "There are a lot

of deliberately blurred lines here, which encourages creativity and mandates teamwork...Every person

here has something unique to contribute - and Revolution's unconventional structure allows them

to make that contribution, regardless of their distinct responsibility within the company."

Giant Records gained its greatest ground in the industry via the country genre, with artists such as

A large gathering of fellow actors, friends, associates and fans of Barbara Hamilton turned out to pay

tribute to the late Canadian stage icon at a memorial service held at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre

on March 10. Ms. Hamilton passed away in Toronto on Feb.

7 of this year after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was 69 years of age.

The service was opened by Gordon Pinsent, who acted as emcee for the evening. He was

followed by Michael Burgess who sang his Les Miserables anthem, a touching rendition of Bring

Him Home. Gino Empry and Charmion King, who produced the service with the assistance of Eric

Goldstein, designed the evening's proceedings to celebrate the life of Ms. Hamilton. The lineup of speakers and performers injected just the right

amount of humour and pathos with a touch of class that would have pleased the late comedienne.

Among the speakers were Mayor Moore, Robin

Ward, Ed and David Mirvish, Doug Campbell, Don Harron, and Louis Negin. There were also priceless comedy routines by Dave Broadfoot and Valerie

Rosedale (a.k.a. Don Harron). The other performers were Albert Schultz who

sang Smile, Catherine McKinnon who performed a touching Wind Beneath My Wings, David Walden

with his own version of Theatre Cat and Camilla Scott, who sang a very emotional I Get Along

Without You Very Well. Scott appeared with Ms. Hamilton in her last stage role, as Mother, in Crazy

For You, which played the Royal Alex. Musical director was David Warrack, who

played keyboards and was assisted by drummer George Kobuk and Tom Lestadt on guitar.

Toronto city councillor Tom Jakobek, attended the service representing Mayor Barbara Hall. He

announced that the city of Toronto had established a Barbara Hamilton Award of Excellence. The first

presentation will be made at the Dora Mayor Moore Awards next year.

Clay Walker, Daryle Singletary and Doug Supernaw on its roster. The Giant label will remain in

Nashville, under the auspices of president and co- owner James Stroud and GM Alan Shapiro.

Though Azoff forsees other instances where the Giant label may be used in the future, overall the name is being entirely replaced by Revolution,

with the label moving to an almost entirely rock focus. The newly named label's first signing is

Seattle -based band Super Deluxe, whose debut album is set for a May 11 release.

OJALTSAYS .

Casualty or not??? Although Ididn't attend this year's Junos, I did watchthe tape as soon as I had the time. I noticedthat many of those who sat in theexpensive seats wore black tie andclothes that were hardly casual. Itoccured to me that whoever decided onthe dress might have misread or misledthe crowd. Were these people expectinga more Junoesque event? Could theyhave been pushing the 'rock show aspect' a littletoo hard...too soon??? Yes, there were all the yelpsand screams that many shows ask their audience torefrain from, but the crowd on the floor had to berich enough or influential enough to get those primeseats and they wanted it to be a more elegant affair. How many might even have rented or went out tobuy clothes for this special occasion...only to bedisappointed. (EC: Put on your driving clothesNellie... we're motoring to Hamilton to the Junos!!!)

What do you do for an encore??? Nowthat the Junos have topped the two million markagain with Anne Murray as the host...what happensnext year??? Will Anne want to be the standing host,or will they have to find someone who will topMadame's ratings!!! She really is the top rater inCanTV. Will she do it again??? (EC: Most awardshows really try to get a comedian! ! !)

Bigtime backlash!!! All this foreign actionfor Cancon artists may have a backlash from ourfriends south...! Not that they are protectionist, butthey did resent the British invasion in the '60s. (EC:You were there! ! !) But then the cream always comesto the top...even if it's Canadian. (EC: Oh sure!!!)

And the winners are...! The big ratings forthe Junos meant the advertisers who chose that showreally bought a pretty big nosecount. (EC: Now wecan move on to 16 CDs for a penny and I don'twant to make a commitment!!!)

Big Country Awards to move. Rumourhas it...that the Big Country Awards will move toanother network this year. My spies tell me the newswill break anytime now and may even be elsewherein this very edition as a late breaking story. (EC:How exciting!!! Stop the presses !! !) Ellie! We haveno presses!!!

Amanda Marshall!!! Goodmarketing strategies, including very

effective trade advertising, has paid off for Sonyand Amanda Marshall. Her debut album is expectedto be platinum in a few weeks, it's now,at 94,000units shipped. Amanda is in good company withCeline Dion, and look what good strategy smartsdid for her. Too bad the Juno people didn't let heropen the show when Shania Twain took sick. (EC:They don't have marketing smarts!!!)

He was there!!! BA should never say never, even for his artists. That 'old broad' has morepersuasive powers, or clout, then he has, and maybeit was a clout in the head that made him change hismind. He was there and we have photos. (EC: Hecouldn't duck that one!!!)

Don't reveal too much!!! That newrecording sensation is leaving his back open torednecks on both sides of the border. He concentratestoo much on what he used to do outside of thebusiness. If he's successful, and he's on his way, they'll be making fun of him, just like theundercurrent against ST. They don't like strangersdown there to begin with. (EC: Right on!!!)

Customer friendly??? One fan at the MelissaEtheridge concert was overheard to say the peoplein the ladies washroom were overly friendly (EC:And she was at the concert to see AshleyMacIsaac!!!)

A Rod Stewart fan!!! When theannouncement came down that Rod Stewart hadcancelled, one fan folded up her chair and headedfor the exit. Security stopped her, and she told themshe paid fifty bucks for the chair, and if he wasn'tthere, the chair went with her. The security let hergo (EC: Will she bring it back for the make -do???)

37 years of garlic??? Publicist Gino Empryis promoting Carman's Steak House, which he'sbilling as "the oldest proprietor owned restaurant inCanada." The proprietor in this case is ArthurCarman, and, being a Greek, he loves garlic, whichfigured muchly in his gaining a foothold inToronto's restaurant business. Now, you ask, what'sa garlic pit got to do with the music business? Justpop your head in the front door and you'll be amazedat who has taken part in this garlic hoot. Carmaneats the stuff raw, but he doesn't chew it. Three tofour cloves a day, dropped in a glass of juice andaway it goes. It may even work with whiskey orrum, and I'm sure it would work with thatswampwater that Toronto brewery calls beer. (EC:Away, away with fife and drum, here we come fullof rum . . . and garlic!!!)

Garth's on the move again!!! When somecritic, or was it a bureaucrat, claimed that Torontowas over-theatred, it was like waving a red flag atyou know who. Garth Drabinsky says their roomfor at least one more, maybe more. He's going to

EMI artist striving to deft categorization

Megan Metcalfe: Staying on Ron Rogers

For a fledgling independent artist, the toughest thing to figure out when first getting into this crazy rock

and roll business is just how to get noticed. You, and all of your friends, know that your stuff is good

- the problem is convincing those in the record company heirarchy that it's worth investing in.

Vancouver native Megan Metcalfe has been crafting her own songs since she was a teenager.

And unlike many of her singer/songwriter friends from the west coast area, Metcalfe insisted on

remaining true to her own material, even if it made getting through the industry door that much tougher.

But as she says, she didn't want to be one of those aspiring artists who find themselves locked into playing covers in a bar for 10 years. "I never wanted to play clubs, because all the friends of mine that were singer/songwriters started

off as teenagers all excited with stars in their eyes, and the clubs just kind of beat it out of them. Pretty

soon, they're doing covers every night, they're doing three sets, a gruelling schedule, they never play their own material. And they're cynical, they're looking

at their audience like, 'yeah, it's a job'. And I thought that would take my aspirations right out of me, so I

didn't do that. I was very stubborn about it, I insisted on doing original material. And I got fired a lot from

coffee houses and such because I'd do one cover then launch into original material."

Like many who developed a love of music, Metcalfe grew up in a family that was already involved in the entertainment world. Her mother,

Joy Metcalfe, is a popular radio host in Vancouver, and before that was a well-known publicist for the

entertainment industries. Metcalfe says she learned at an early age the pressures and chaotic nature of

the music biz. "My mom hasn't always worked in radio, she

started off as a singer herself. She wanted to be an actor, but when that got put aside for her family,

she started doing publicity for the theatre, which led into her promoting artists when they came into

town. So I got introduced to Burton Cummings, Kenny Rogers, Rosemary Clooney, a very broad

range of people. So I got a sense of their lifestyle, the hectic nature of the business, the pressure they

endure. "I sat her down when I was 16 and said I want

to be a musician and she said 'oh Megan, you don't want to be a musician'. She told me its a brutal

business and it's hard on your heart and it batters your self-confidence. She was concerned that I might

be hurt and that I might change, because the industry does change people. So she said 'if you want to do

it, I won't tell you not to, but I'll caution you how hard it is'. And she said 'if you want to do this, I'm

gonna back off, you have to earn people's respect on your own, without me, and when you've earned

people's respect on your own, then I'm behind you 100%'. Ultimately, it was the kindest thing she ever

could have done." Metcalfe earned that respect on her own, again

by sticking to her own original material while playing at festivals and fairs, as well as local coffee houses. Her talents garnered her top prize in the 1982

Vancouver Amateur Talent contest, and her energy led her to be one of the founders of the Pacific

Songwriters Association. It was following a performance at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival that

the songwriter's path things started to pick up. Audience members lined

up after her set to buy her music, but she had nothing to give them. She immediately found some studio

time and worked on a demo, where she met the man who is now her musical collaborator, producer, and

mate. "I was introduced to Robbie (Steininger) four

years ago, we clicked in every way imaginable, professionally and personally. We moved in

together, we'd been working together for months writing songs and demoing things. Our relationship

together has always been very intense, whatever happens at home we take to the studio, and vice

versa. There's simply no other way, it would be

artificial otherwise. If tension arose, it arose because both of us wanted to create the best possible work that we could.

"It started to really gell when I met Rob, and then I was introduced to everybody in the music

community. So I walk into the studio to do my first studio work and here's Matt Frenette, and Sue

Leonard, and Vince Ditrich (Spirit Of The West), and I'm thinking 'I'm the baby here, I know

nothing'. So there was naturally a lot of tense moments, and intimidating moments. But everyone

was great and loved the music and was very supportive."

Metcalfe believes her relationship with Steininger has helped her career in innumerable

ways. Not only did he introduce her to numerous members of the west coast music community, but

he also pushed her to improve her songwriting. "Half of the songs are all me, a couple of them

I wrote with Robbie, and there's one song I wrote with two other women, Linda McCrae from Spirit

Of The West and Sue Leonard from k.d. lang's touring band. But for the most part if I'm co -writing,

I'm writing with Robbie, and our system, if that's what you call it, is for Robbie to create this musical

landscape. He'll create this rhythm, and a sound and a chord progression, and then he sets me in this

landscape and says 'people it with words'. It's made me a much better lyricist because he's stretched and

pulled and contorted what I do in the best, most challenging ways."

When she first began cutting her demos, Metcalfe sent them out to every record company

she could find, but admits that the amateurish packaging of the demo resulted in most of them

getting returned unopened. Eventually, a tape found its way to EMI A&R rep Jody Mitchell, who liked

what he heard. "I only approached one label with this project

four years ago, and that was EMI, and I got a great response from (A&R rep) Jody Mitchell. His whole attitude was 'we'll make this work', and he did

everything in his power to push it through. But the wheel takes such a long time to turn. We did send

one demo tape to A&M, but they'd just signed Jann Arden and it was completely inappropriate to sign

the two of us since our music is somewhat similar. So I stuck with EMI because they kept telling me

they weren't passing on this album, it was important to them."

Metcalfe feels the toughest thing after she got the call from Mitchell was the waiting. Like most

major labels, EMI has many irons in the fire, so their usual line to Metcalfe was, 'just wait a little

while longer, keep writing, and we'll eventually get something done'. But Metcalfe wasn't really keen

on waiting. "We would work in the studio in the midnight

to 8 am shift trying to cut demos to send to EMI. And they loved it, but it was hard because we got to

a point where I said 'I'm demoing all this stuff, the studio is ready to put out a master product, if I sign

with you now, how fast can you get me into the studio'. And Jody said 'oh, a year, maybe.' And I thought I could put out a product in three months.

Well, I didn't have it out in three months, it took about a year, but that's because it took all those

midnight shifts and a lot of delays. There were months going by when I just couldn't get into the studio.

"But in the end, when we had the product, Jody encouraged me to go the independent route. He said

we'd get some critical acclaim, get some attention, and when it comes time for the label deal, we'd have

much more credibility with the label and they'd have a greater sense of who I am. So we released it

independently, it was out for a full year, we had about 13 reviews which were all great, we had

national distribution through Spinner. Once it was in the stores and the critical reviews started

happening, we did start selling product. We sold through the two runs of 1,000 we could afford. That

was when Jody came in and said, 'okay, I think it's time'. It was remastered and repackaged, but other

METCALFE continued from page 5

than that, it was identical to the independentone."

The attractive singer/songwriter isjustifiably proud of the fact that her music istough to define. Comparisons to Jann Arden,James Taylor and Bruce Hornsby have beenmade, but Metcalfe shies away from tryingto categorize her music. She points toHornsby, one of her musical idols, as anexample of someone who refused to makemusic that was tailor-made for certain radioformats.

"When The Way It Is came on the radio, people didn't say "oh listen, a country song'or 'oh listen, rock music'. They said, 'wow, listen to that piano, I haven't heard piano inmusic in a long time, what a cool song'. As alistener, I'm not a country fan, or a rock fan, because that is insulting to be slotted into onelittle box, it's insulting to the audience asmuch as it is for the artist. Anybody's recordcollection will have a vast array of music init, so I think you're limiting the people wholisten to you. Just because you like countrymusic, that doesn't mean you like all countrymusic, and it doesn't mean you don't like anyrock. The only thing really regulating it isradio, and I'll go out on a limb and predictthat even that isn't going to last."

There are those who have felt that partof the reason for Metcalfe's signing wassimply because EMI was trying to tap intothe current trend of popular female artists suchas Arden, Joan Osborne and AlanisMorissette, who have gained mainstreamacceptance in a business that has traditionallybeen male dominated. But the artist feels thatthe record companies are merely awakeningto the idea that women can create music asinteresting and diverse as their malecounterparts.

"I'd like to think I wasn't signed becauseI was a girl with a guitar and it happens to bea popular icon these days. My attitude towardsit is, bring it on, the world will separate theweak from the strong and whoever hits withpeople will keep doing what they do. If you'rein it for the love of music and you're writingbecause you have to write, then you'll be init and maintaining your popularity ifplatypuses playing the accordion is the nextbig thing."

"Women have never really been out ofmusic, but I think the recent success has reallybroken down barriers, because there was a

lid on women emotionally, they weren'tallowed to run the einotional gamut ofvulnerability right through to vitriolicaggression. Now, what you're seeing isprobably the same number of women in theindustry, you're just hearing them talkdifferently. There's much more convictionand much more of it is from the heart. Womenare writing more material, which is a greatthing, because it's about time their voiceswere heard. But who knows what the nexttrend will be - I just hope that when the dustsettles, I'm still left standing."

When asked about her dedication on thealbum, Metcalfe gets a sad little smile, happythat someone has finally asked her about it,but a little sombre when thinking about whatit's all about.

She dedicates the album to BrendaWood, a good friend who passed away fromcancer not too long ago. Wood, who hadfought cancer since childhood, had the addeddifficulty of dealing with an abusive husbandwho was a cocaine addict. Metcalfe met herjust after Wood, just out of the hospital, hadbeen forced to pack up her belongings andtwo children and move out of the house. Sheexplains that she and Wood met just a coupleof years ago, and proceeded to organize aweekly ladies night involving themselves andtheir closest friends getting together to eatand discuss anything and everything.

"We kept having these ladies night, andshe attended, but there was somethingdifferent, and none of us knew why. She'dbeen to the doctor and got a clean bill ofhealth, but one evening she said 'there'ssomething wrong'. So she went back to thedoctor, had an ultrasound, and this time theyfound a tumour in her remaining lung. Bythis point, it was inoperable. So she went intothe hospital, still fighting, but she was onlyin the hospital two weeks before she died. The biggest thing for her was the idea shewas letting her friends down by not beingstrong enough to recover. And the last thingI told her was it's time for us to be strong. Itwas incredibly painful, I had never been thatclose to death. I wouldn't be the person I amnow...it really changed me life."

It was partially because of Wood'sinsistance that Metcalfe follow through onher musical pursuits that the artist finally didget that deal with EMI. The result is one ofthe more honest and heartfelt albums of thepast year, and one that should enable Metcalfeto avoid playing covers in bars for some time.

THE TONY RICH PROJECT -R&B/PopWordsLaFace-26022-NNot since R. Kelly launched his impressivecareer has the soul/R&B genre seen such anauspicious debut. Babyface and AntonioReid, the current Mohammeds on the soul/13613 mountain top, haven't made too manymistakes in the past few years, and it seemsvery likely that Mr. Rich will enjoy as fine asuccess as any Reid/Babyface protege in thepast. Not only does Rich write all his material, but he also performs all the instrumentationand produces. Now, if the material turnedout to be some tired, lifeless pap, thatwouldn't mean a whole lot. But the fact is,this is some fine, soulful material, echoingthat other Babyface discovery of a coupleyears back, Toni Braxton. Okay, so the lyricalcontent doesn't rival Wordsworth, but that'sa petty swipe. The fact is, this is the stuffthat stars are made of, and with some strongchart success already happening, Tony Richshould make the LaFace gang a bundle inthe coming months. -RR

THE IMMIGRANTS -celtic/popIn Between Before And AfterGBM-895Since this album's release in the summer of'95, the sales have reached the 1,500 markin the Golden Horseshoe area, strictlythrough independent distribution. That alonetells us that there's definitely somethingworth singing about here. Well, okay, we'lllet the band do the singing. The Immigrantsare Rob van Hartingsveldt, Paul Hogeterp,Fred Geus and Pete Zantingh. Sure, they mayhave funny names, but together they are atight, inspired group of players, and thisdebut CD definitely offers something that themajors should listen up for. It may seem oddto hear a Hamilton -based band performingceltic folk/pop tunes (we assume mostHamilton artists like to play in garages) butlistening to just a couple of tracks will qu ckly

clear your mind of any ideas that only eastcoasters can do the trick. The lead track,Waiting For The World To End, features somefine harmonizing and top-notch fiddling byHogeterp, while tunes such as Give Her MyBest and Home At Last feature some finetraditional celtic flavourings. The groupdoesn't ignore their roots either, tossing in apair of traditional covers, Just Plain Spailen

/and Harbour Grace. Produced by DougRomanow (Wind May Do Damage), this onemakes us believe that we haven't heard thelast, or best, of the celtic movement. -RR

LUSH -AlternativeLovelife4AD 76974 2080-QBy now this UK foursome have establishedthemselves before the media eye, but it hasbeen a slow climb relatively speaking. Itseems that part of their success was due tosticking to the habit of making music for thepast eight years (though their debut properwas only in 1992), a habit that was rewardedwith a spot on the second Lollapaloozafestival a few years back. Following thesuccess of the Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrieproduced Spooky and later Split, Lushreached a point where it could be said ofthem that they had truly earned their fifteenminutes. Lovelife, their newest release, is a

perfect gloss on that past work, primanybecause it successfully translates themusical geography of the older pieces intoa subtle pop art. What is rare about theachievement is that the task is usually left toimitators who have yet to shake theinfluence. Dare we say it? Lovelife is a greatalbum, not least because it plays like analbum and not a collection of tunes. Aninclination for Elastica-like punkiness onHeavenly Bodies, Single Girl and Runawaymix well with an original claim on tunes likeLast Night, The Childcatcher and Papasan.Ciao!, an unmistakeable duet with Pulp'sJarvis Cocker is as good as it gets: listeningto it is a little like remembering it. With thatkind of pop seductiveness going for it, thisrecord should be the darling of alternativeradio for '96. -RG

SEPULTURA -MetalRootsAttic RR 8900-JAttic Records is one of the few labels nowdealing with what should properly be termedhate metal, and the reasons why are fairlyobvious. This is a form of music in directlineage with Venom, Slayer and KingDiamond of yesteryear, those bands thatstood at the forefront of a style thatoriginated in the UK. Having migrated to theAmericas, the music has been picked upespecially by Latin Americans (!) who havereplaced the emphasis on devil worship withpolitical hatred (Nailbomb, Brujeria). Ofcourse, the substance of it is still the same;musically speaking we're dealing withscreaming and other forms of noise, all ofwhich offers up a pretty solid case forcreative bankruptcy. Originally from Brazil,Sepulture have been stewing in these murkywaters for a long time and have risen to itsgrimy surface over the years. For that reason, tunes like Roots Bloody Roots, Attitude andDictatorshit should go off like a cannonballat a gunfight, as they overdose on allaforementioned ingfedients. An acoustic

SEPULTURA e 1201:373

piece dedicated to marijuana (Jasco) and atribal dance piece (Itsari) seem entirelyinappropriate until one realises that the blackheart of this music is its Cause. Ironically, itis exactly what the kids who buy this discwould have to overlook for us to be able towholeheartedly recommend it. -RG

THE CONSCIENCE -Rock/AlternativePILATE - Living In a Movie Scene

Fading Ways Music 003 -IndependentWith a cover of Bowie's Lady Stardust andenough mascara to open up for Tammy FayeBakker, Toronto's The Conscience Pilatearen't clandestine about where their loyaltieslie. But if they have waded unrepentantly intothe satin pool of glam, they have done sodiscriminately, taking what they like andleaving behind the unnecessary bits (like theandrogynous vocals, for example). Still verymuch on the exploring and discovering end,Pilate offer a diversity of sound within thesame bandwidth without re -inventing thewheel on every track. Either they've been atit awhile in the basement of their homes orelse they're just good songwriters. Living Ina Movie Scene is proof enough to convinceus that these guys are after that specificsomething and are at the cusp of getting it.Mistake Number Six is the breaking track, aflawless single with enough distinctiveness

to elicit the all important question from thelistener: 'Who are these guys?' First (Glance),a long piano driven piece that could haveeasily flopped on a debut is the track thatconverted us. Powerfully written, expertlyexecuted; frankly, we didn't think glam hadit in it. Majors take note. -RG

Given the stellar standingof the artists it need hardly be said that thelistening experience is profound andbeautiful. Indeed, the singers have masteredthe difficult feat of making Russian, which isa dreadful language, fall pleasantly uponone's ears. It's impossible to declare anyparticular songs to be better or betterperformed than others. There can only besome that are preferred by whomever islistening. Still, we were much taken by thosesung by Maria Popescu. We had given themspecial attention for two reasons. The firstis that we enjoy mezzos and the second isthat this talented young Canadian isscheduled to make her debut at La Scala onApril 6th. On the evidence of her singinghere, she is bound to be triumphant. -BW

ALBUM PICKNOW!Various ArtistsEMI Music Canada -37637-FThe idea of three major record companies getting together to release an albumwould have been laughed at a few years back. But this is the new all -for -one, one -for -all '90s, and at a time when record sales are suffering for every label, a goodtime for three of the biggest to get together to produce an album that should haveguaranteed strong sales. Thecompilation, the first in what could be anendless series, is based on a similarseries which has had a strong run in theUK for last 10 years. Boosted by a strongadvertising campaign, this one could andshould reach multi -platinum levels. Ofcourse, it doesn't hurt that the albumfeatures some of the most popular artistsof the day, and some of the biggest hitsof the past year or two. Those hits includeMissing (Everything But The Girl),Gangsta's Paradise (Coolio), Again (JanetJackson), Kiss From A Rose (Seal), Baby(Brandy) and I Could Fall In Love Again(Selena), among many others. It's not toooften you find an album that has 17 goodsongs, never mind 17 songs that are bonafide hits. Warner, MCA and EMI should begetting together for many festive celebrations as the sales total up. Now, isn't it niceto see the results of a kinder, gentler industry. -RR
