The long standing tradition of Italy in the domain of aeronautics has

constituted the basis for the subsequent development of astronautics,

including the specific field of spaceplanes and hypersonic technologies.

1908, first powered flight in Italy (Leon Delagrange in Rome)

1912, first world record for speed and altitude (1.160 meters, Enrico

Cobioni on a Caproni aircraft in Vizzola Ticino, Varese)

1956, first Italian made aircraft to break the sound barrier (Lt. Col.

ItAF Giovanni Franchini on Aerfer Sagittario II in Pratica di Mare,

Rome)

1964, first launch of a satellite (San Marco programme, Wallops Island

Flight Facility, USA), a cooperative effort between the Italian Space

Research Commission (CRS) and NASA led by Gen. ItAF Luigi

Broglio

1967, Italy becomes the third country after USA and URSS to launch a

satellite (San Marco) from the sea-launch base in Malindi with full

Italian personnel

1975, Italy contributes to the institution of the European Space

Agency (ESA)

1988, institution of the Italian Space Agency (ASI)

Brief Historical Background

Activities in the field of spaceplanes and hypersonic flight, atmospheric and/or

suborbital, are mainly part and parcel of the space activities in general, sharing

as they do some technological challenges (SSTO, re-entry vehicles, TPS,

aerodynamics and aerothermodynamics, etc.).

Propulsion is also becoming a domain where solutions could be beneficial to

both, specifically outside the earth atmosphere in case of suborbital flights as

opposed to purely atmospheric hypersonic flights. Hybrid solutions appear to

be promising (t-jet/scram-jet/rocket).

Italy, in consideration of the huge investments involved, gives priority to EU

and international cooperation while pursuing some national initiatives.

According to most recent estimates, human resources in the Italian space

industry amount to some 6.000 units with revenues totaling 1.5 M€.

Recent and Current Activities

The USV (Unmanned Space Vehicles) programme, led by the Italian

Aerospace Research Center (CIRA), aimed to develop enabling

technologies for future space access and reentry systems and trans-

atmospheric winged vehicles. Two trans-supersonic flight tests achieved

using stratospheric balloon drop approach

IXV (Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle) programme by ESA, with Thales

Alenia Space-Italia as prime contractor. Launched by a VEGA rocket (AVIO

and EU partners) on February 11, 2015, IXV has been controlled by ALTEC,

with Leonardo (formerly Finmeccanica) covering the avionic system,

software and providing the appropriate environment for all functional

electrical tests. AEROSEKUR has been in charge of the floating system and

beacon for recovery

Both USV and IXV are technological demonstrators for aerodynamically

controlled re-entry vehicles, whose main purpose is the verification and

validation in flight of enabling technologies, among which TPS, GNC,

automatic descent and landing, all common to hypersonic vehicles

Italy is also playing a significant role in the affordable, reusable end-to-end

Integrated Space Transportation System Service (SPACE RIDER) to be

launched on Vega-C to provide Europe with an independent capability to

routinely access and return from low Earth orbit with a reusable system

able to transport payloads for an array of applications, orbit altitudes and

inclinations.

HYPLANE is a project conceived and led by TRANS-TECH, an Italian SME,

together with the University Federico II of Naples. It is a multipurpose 6-

seat business-like jet able to perform suborbital flight for space tourism,

technology experimentation, astronauts training and small payload launch

to orbit, as well as intercontinental hypersonic cruising flight (Rome to

New York in less than 2 hours), with horizontal take-off and landing

capability from conventional short-runway airports

SHARK (Sounding Hypersonic Atmospheric Re-entering Kapsule),

launched in 2010 by the sounding rocket MAXUS 8 (ESA) at the apogee of

700 km, allowed CIRA and CNR to acquire valuable data in the extra-

atmospheric phase as well as during the re-entry phase, reaching load

factors of 40g, temperatures of 1000° C and Mach 10 at 30 km. It is the

fastest flight ever in Italy

A number of Italian SMEs (Technosistemi, TSD Space, Marotta, Aerospace),

along with CIRA as well as other EU, Australian, Russian and Brazilian

partners, participate to the international programme HEXAFLY-INT

(High-speed Experimental FLY vehicles), co-financed by the EC and ESA.

An engineless vehicle, EFTV (Experimental Flight Test Vehicle), assembled

and tested in Italy, is planned to be launched from Alcantara (Brazil) in

2019. Verification and validation of high temperature materiel, GNC

algorithms, fluid dynamics simulation tools and aerodynamic configuration

for Mach 7-8 are the main purposes of the test.

The aim to develop TPS, both passive (through the use of high conductivity

composite ceramic fibers) and active (cooling fluids through porous

ceramic components), drives the THOR multinational project. Thales Alenia

Space-Italy is actively participating.

TELESPAZIO is leading the project MISTRAL within the Campania

Aerospace District (DAC) strategic plan. It is an air-launched microsatellite

with a tunable-opening deployable system enabling orbit decay control and

precise reentry.

ALI, a consortium of SMEs of DAC, is developing the deployable heat

shielded reentry capsule IRENE for ISS servicing in terms of small payload

return to Earth. Its Mars version is named SMS (Small Mars Satellite)

AEROSEKUR, an Italian PMI, has developed the inflatable re-entry capsule

SPEM (SPacecrew Emergency Module) for the Eneide mission (2005).

Although not tested in flight, it successfully passed a verification test in

the SCIROCCO plasma wind tunnel of CIRA.

AVIOSPACE participates to HYPMOCES (Hypersonic Morphing for a Cabin

Escape System), a research project whose main objective is to explore and

develop technologies to allow the use of morphing in emergency escape

from an hypersonic flight.

AVIOSPACE and LAER GROUP are implementing a project on Special

Materiel for Hypersonic Vehicles, financed by the Italian Ministry of

Defense, for the development of a high temperature resistant ceramic

panel obtained trough combination and sequence of assorted processes

involving, among others, Polymeric Impregnation and Pyrolysis, Chemical

Vapour Infiltration and Pressure Vapour Deposition.

SHS (Space Hot Structures) deals with advanced CMC materials and

coating development and testing in high enthalpy test facilities GHIBLI and

SCIROCCO.

ALTEC has completed a preliminary study on the possibility to have a

spaceport in Italy for future hypersonic transport. “Spacegate” has covered

all aspects related to such flights, from airspace management to ground

infrastructures.

CESMA, the Center for Military Studies on Aerospace, organized in 2014

and 2016 two International Symposia on Hypersonic Flights, covering

enabling technologies and programmes related to hypersonic flights at the

national, European and international level. Norms, regulations, economical

and financial as well environmental aspects have also been dealt with.

ENAC, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority, and the Italian Space Agency

have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with FAA aimed at the

definition of harmonized regulations to make possible to operate

suborbital space flights from the Italian territory, with the realization of at

least one spaceport.

Along the same lines, and in order to favor synergies, a Letter of Intent is

in place among ENAC, ASI and the Italian Air Force including a Working

Group on Suborbital Flights.

NAPOLI 2018 Restaurants

Naples has very many restaurants

and pizzerias. Wherever you go,

you can find a good one.

Near Piazza Plebiscito there is

Pizzeria Brandi where it is believed

that back in 1889 pizza Margherita

was invented in honor of the

Queens of Italy Margherita di

Savoia.

1

A more philological approach

established that pizza Margherita

was invented in Naples much

before and precisely around 1796.

Whatever the chosen congress

site will be, launches will be

served inside the congress area.

NAPOLI 2018 ASI-SGC

The Centre for Space Geodesy (CGS) is dedicated to

Professor Giuseppe ("Bepi") Colombo and is located

in the municipal district of Matera about 10 kilometres

east of the town, on the western boundary with the

'Murge'. Opened in 1983 thanks to the joined effort of

CNR's National Space Plan, Regione Basilicata and

NASA, the CGS is a structure 5000 m2 large where

about 100 people work up today. Its budget is about

10 millions per year.

Mainly devoted to earth observation through

advanced space techniques (space geodesy and

remote sensing), the CGS has recently been dealing

with other fields, in particular space robot technology

and interplanetary missions. It is one of the most

important research structures in southern Italy.
