Dear Friends,
We have arrived at the VII Edition ofDegree & Profession© – Florence WorldFestival that, within the frame of the LifeBeyond Tourism® ethos and followingthe mission of the Romualdo Del BiancoFoundation, through the years con-tributed to the development of intercul-tural dialogue, becoming an importantinternational appointment between gradu-ates, students and professionals. It was September 2008 when weannounced the creation of the associationLife Beyond Tourism® for interculturaldialogue, the natural corollary to the“Declaration of Intent” signed on 16March 2008 by 59 of the Fondazione’sexperts, convened in Florence from twen-ty different countries. The complete integration of Degree &Profession with the ethos Life BeyondTourism® has been clear since the begin-ning, and I’m glad to seize the opportuni-ty provided by this event to announcethe recent creation of the Life BeyondTourism®Nonprofit Portal. In addition to the concepts of “safeguard-ing” and “enhancing” our cultural her-itage, the Fondazione is eager to directpeople’s “use and enjoyment” of that cul-tural heritage toward the furtherance ofintercultural dialogue. The Life BeyondTourism® Nonprofit Portal, a concreteinstance of that determination, isdesigned specifically to introduce the visi-tor to a region’s character by presentingthose cultural institutions and businesses– including those with a low profile –that play a significant role in definingthat character, and whose history andcurrent activity embody the “spirit ofplace”. Thus the portal provides an inter-
active platform for communicating anintangible heritage made of motivationsand aspirations which breathe life andmeaning into the tangible heritage of aplace. It becomes clear how intangible heritagehas a right to the same safeguards asany work of art or monument. Throughthis it becomes an important mean tofoster intercultural knowledge, today’surgent necessity, and to transformtourism — including “mass” tourism —from a threat to our heritage into astrategic opportunity for intercultural dia-logue. Sites, especially those included inthe world heritage, can therefore becomeworkshops for knowledge and sharedgrowth within a framework of mutualrespect. Thus, it became clear that Degree &Profession was an opportunity to analyzethe linkage between heritage and inter-cultural dialogue and the role of theyoung generations for the developmentof this new concepts.I hope this days will give us an opportu-nity to grow together and to movetoward a concrete implementation of LifeBeyond Tourism® ethos in each of ourcities and countries. An opportunity todevelop ideas and proposals. An opportu-nity to go back home with a new visiontoward a future in which intercultural dia-logue is the basis of our human, socialand cultural growth. All said, I extend to you my warmest wel-come and I thank you for being with us aprotagonist in the popularization of theLife Beyond Tourism® ethos.
