VC student receives scholarship from DeLeon Club of Victoria

The DeLeon Club of Victoria awarded a $1,350 scholarship to Victoria College Law Enforcement Academy student Dinah Retiz.

VC Law Enforcement Academy Director James Martinez recom-mended Retiz for the scholarship after several students submitted letters expressing their goals and qualifications. The DeLeon Club’s directors chose Retiz after Martinez’s recommendation.

“Her selection was based on her performance in the Law Enforce-ment Academy from Day 1,” Martinez said. “We opened it up to the entire class. Based on the letter she submitted, we decided she was the most worthy person for this award.”

This is the first year the DeLeon Club has provided scholarships

Thirty years after the Texas Department of Transportation launched its “Don’t mess with Texas” anti-litter campaign the spirited call-to-action is still going strong.

To celebrate the campaign’s third decade, Boy Scouts in Texas can earn a commemorative 30th

anniversary “Don’t mess with Texas” merit badge for achieving a litter cleanup requirement dur-ing Saturday’s annual “Don’t mess with Texas” Trash-Off and other litter pickup events throughout the year. The “Don’t mess with Texas” Trash-Off (Saturday, April 9) is a partnership between TxDOT and

Keep Texas Beautiful and is the single largest one-day roadway cleanup effort in the state. Last year, 1,500 trash-off events across Texas resulted in more than 85,000

volunteers collecting more than 10 million pounds of waste and re-cyclables. To volunteer or learn more, visit www.DontMessWith-Texas.org.

The importance of hiring a licensed HVAC contractor

When you hire a licensed HVAC contractor, you can rest assured that the services you receive will be performed effectively. This means in the end that you will save money. Whether you’re in-stalling an HVAC system or mak-ing repairs, you will always want to obtain services from a licensed HVAC contractor.

Victoria voters have additional photo ID options at the pollsVictoria County Election Ad-

ministrator George Matthews re-minded Texans that voters who do

not possess and cannot reasonably obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID now have ad-

ditional options when voting in person.

“My office is working to make sure all the voters in Victoria County are ready to cast a ballot,” said Matthews. “These new op-tions for voters who do not pos-sess and cannot reasonably obtain photo ID are currently in place and will be used in the November Election.”

As provided by a court order, if a voter does not possess and can-not reasonably obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, the voter may vote by (1) signing a declaration at the polls explain-ing why the voter is reasonably unable to obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, and (2) providing one of various forms of supporting documentation.

Supporting documentation can be a certified birth certificate (must be an original), a valid voter regis-tration certificate, a copy or origi-nal of one of the following: current utility bill, bank statement, gov-ernment check, or paycheck, or other government document that shows the voter’s name and an ad-dress, although government docu-ments which include a photo must be original and cannot be copies. If a voter meets these require-ments and is otherwise eligible to vote, the voter will be able to cast a regular ballot in the election.

The seven forms of approved photo ID are:

• Texas driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)

• Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS

• Texas personal identification card issued by DPS

• Texas license to carry a hand-gun issued by DPS

• United States military identifi-cation card containing the person’s photograph

• United States citizenship cer-tificate containing the person’s photograph

• United States passport

With the exception of the U.S. citizenship certificate, the ap-proved photo ID must be current or have expired no more than four years before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place.

Voters with a disability may

continue to apply with the county registrar for a permanent exemp-tion to showing approved photo ID (which now may be expired no more than four years) at the polls. Also, voters who (1) have a consistent religious objections to being photographed or (2) do not present one of the seven forms of approved photo ID because of cer-tain natural disasters as declared by the President of the United States or the Texas Governor, may continue apply for a temporary exemption to showing approved photo ID at the polls.

UHV named to national community service honor roll

The University of Houston-Victoria encourages its students to be involved in community service activities, and a national organiza-tion recently took note.

The Corporation for National & Community Service recognized UHV on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The university was one of 28 Texas schools honored. This included UH, Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin. It was the second year in a row UHV has received the honor.

“Community service is a vital part of UHV’s role as a place of higher learning,” UHV President Vic Morgan said. “We want our students, as well as our faculty and staff, to have a positive impact on our community.”

UHV’s emphasis on community service has led to the creation of several programs in recent years. Freshmen participate in a First-Year Experience course that in-cludes opportunities to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and other nonprofit organizations.

In addition, UHV hosts a Volun-teer Opportunity Fair every semes-ter to educate students about needs in the Victoria area. Nonprofit or-ganizations that need volunteers set up recruitment tables and talk with students about available op-portunities.

“UHV students volunteer and are very active in our community on a regular basis,” said Michael Wilkinson, UHV Student Life & Services director. “Within the last couple of years, we’ve added several new service initiatives. We have done this to increase the number of outside of the class-room learning opportunities. Giv-ing back is good for you person-ally, as well as the community in which you reside.”

For the past two years, the uni-versity has offered volunteer op-portunities through the Jags Join In – Day of Service. This year, 42 students volunteered at Victoria nonprofit organizations, including Golden Crescent Habitat for Hu-manity, Food Bank of the Golden Crescent and Adopt-A-Pet. Stu-dents also had the opportunity to take part in an Alternative Spring Break trip to help complete com-munity service projects in New Orleans.

Most recently, a group of 28 students and four staff members went to Louisiana during Labor

Day weekend to assist in recov-ery efforts after the state experi-enced severe flooding. The trip was suggested by the university’s administration and is a testament

to UHV’s commitment to service, Wilkinson said.

“We want to continue to expand what we’re doing from a service standpoint,” Wilkinson said. “It’s

an honor and a privilege to be named to the President’s Honor Roll. It says a lot about our insti-tution, and it echoes the fact that UHV is service-minded.”

Three local religious leaders discussed their beliefs, the presi-dential election campaign and oth-er current issues during a “Faith

Forum” on Tuesday at Victoria College’s Student Center.

About 40 people attended the event, which was hosted by VC’s

Catholic Student Association and emceed by VC Professor of Music and Fine Arts Department Chair Jonathan Anderson.

Catholic Bishop Brendan Cahill of the Diocese of Victoria, Pastor Sharon Wiggins of St. Mark’s Lu-theran Church in Cuero and Imam Osama Hassan of the Victoria Is-lamic Center fielded questions from Anderson and guests ranging from their favorite prayers to the challenge of maintaining an unbi-ased position in front of their fol-lowers during the current political season.

Hassan used the forum as an op-portunity to dispel misconceptions of the Muslim faith portrayed by the media.

“When I told people my name was Osama, people got scared,” said Hassan, who moved to the U.S. from Egypt 15 years ago. “My name was a big problem. I was asked, ‘Why did your parents

name you Osama?’ I said, ‘I had nothing to do with that.’

“Some people have told me that they are scared to come into our mosque. That is very saddening.”

Hassan said the Quran does not encourage Muslims to commit ter-rorist attacks and those that are involved in such incidents are per-verting his faith.

“The Quran says if you save a soul, you save the entire man-kind,” Hassan said. “But if you hurt a soul, indeed, you hurt the entire mankind. … Islam is not how it is made in the media and it is not about killing or seeking to kill anybody.

“God would never like to see servants hurt one another. I chal-

lenge anyone to find in the Quran where it says to kill somebody. God says if someone attacks you, then you can defend yourself. … We condemn anything that hurts

anybody here or anywhere else on the earth.”

Cahill and Wiggins said Mus-lims and Christians worship the same god.

“Like the Catholic faith, the Jewish and Islam faiths have the same belief in one god,” Cahill said. “Some Catholics think the Is-lam god is a different god.”

“Allah and God are not two dif-ferent gods,” Wiggins said. “It’s just two different languages.”

Cahill said a misconception of Catholicism he deals with is the perception that his faith isolates itself from other beliefs.

“A lot of people believe it’s the Catholics against everyone else,” Cahill said. “Our desire, through our faith, is the unity of all human-ity and to profess the love of God to all people. … So many people think we hate people who do not think like we do. That’s why I

US citizens arm themselves against threat of IRS scams

Last month saw a surge in the number of IRS telephone scams being reported. Across every state, criminals claiming to be from the IRS have been threatening to take legal action if outstanding debts are not settled immediately.

Although there has been an in-crease in IRS telephone scams in recent weeks, the Treasury In-spector General for Tax Admin-istration, which investigates IRS scams, estimates that since Oc-tober 2013, Americans have lost more than $44 million to these types of scams.

However, there is a growing trend towards Americans taking back control of their telephones and sending a firm message to tele-phone scammers. Calling block-ing specialists, CPR Call Blocker, have reported an increase in sales of its call blocking products by 150 per cent this year; thanks to consumers facing up to the prob-lem of unwanted and scam calls.

The call blocking device al-lows consumers to cut off un-wanted calls as they come in and permanently stop them from call-ing again. It is already pre-pro-grammed with up to 5,000 known unwanted phone numbers and gives the option to add a further 1,200 numbers.

search into scam calls echoes what is currently happening across the country. A YouGov study com-missioned by CPR Call Blocker showed that 11 per cent of Ameri-cans have been the victim of a telephone scam, with 20 per cent of those having lost between $500 and $10,000. The most common scam to affect the victims was fraudulent calls from those claim-ing to be from the IRS.

“Almost nine in ten Americans receive unwanted phone calls each month. While adding your num-ber to the Do Not Call Register and being careful where you share your personal data will eliminate a

certain number of these calls, this cannot stop callers from outside of the US contacting you. Scammers are always looking for new ways to target victims and they will stop at nothing once they have a data-base of phone numbers.

“Our research showed that 60% of Americans receive repeated calls from the same organization despite telling them to stop. The great thing about call blockers is that it permanently blocks num-bers from getting through to you again so you can’t be targeted by

the same person twice.”CPR Call Blocker is urging con-

sumers to be aware of the current IRS scam and to immediately hang up the phone if they feel that the call may be a scam. The IRS has re-cently published its own guidance to consumers, reassuring them that initial contact regarding tax pay-ments will always be through the mail. They will also never ask for financial data or credit and debit card numbers over the telephone.

al final pero muy felices. Vivien-do una vida mejor con educación y ayudando a la gente trabajando como doctores, maestros, etc... Es la realidad. Hay muchos prob-lemas en el mundo, mucho mate-rial para las telenovelas.

Unas históricas novelas han sido exitosas en años pasados. Una his-toria que es la de niño José Sán-chez del Rio que lo mataron los soldados del Presidente Calles du-

rante la guerra de Los Cristeros en los años 1920’s en México porque José no quiso negar a Cristo Rey ni a la Virgen de Guadalupe.

José quiera ser un soldado en esta guerra. Su Mama le dijo, “Mi hijo estas muy joven. No te vayas. ¿Porque te quieres ir?”

La respuesta fue, “Quiero estar con Cristo.”

Ahora en el 16 de Octubre 2016 José Sánchez del Rio va ser canon-izado Santo en Roma por el Papa Francisco. Se va ver en el canal EWTN.

Las telenovelas del pasado fuer-on muy bonitas. Pero ya pasaron su tiempo por el momento. ¡Van a ser populares en unos años más!

year from October 6 – November 5, 2016. The exhibit features richly detailed, lovingly crafted Day of the Dead Altars created by local artists and families. Altars include photos, brilliant flowers, art work, and often the honored person’s fa-vorite food.

For the 6th year there will also be a Retablo (Mexican folk art) silent auction with many original works of art available to be bid on with proceeds helping to accom-plish our mission of “reaching out to enrich, enlighten and educate through visual and cultural art.”

The Nave’s Dia de los Muertos exhibit will be closing with the Dia de los Muertos festival on Novem-ber 5, 2016 from 11:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Many older Americans who once dreamed of lounging around the house in retirement instead are waking up each morning to get ready for work.

A recent Pew Research Center study showed that the percentage of Americans 65 and over still employed is on the rise, having reached 18.8 percent as of May, up from 12.8 percent in 2000.

Depending on an individual’s situation, though, working past traditional retirement age may not be such a terrible thing.

“Some people say they keep working because they can’t afford to retire,” says John Eikenberry, president of Eikenberry Retire-ment Planning (www.Eikenberry-Retirement.com), a wealth-man-

agement firm. “Some people don’t want to retire because they love what they do.”

Eikenberry, 68, falls in the lat-ter group. His keep-at-it attitude worked in his favor after a surgery in February.

“One of the people in the medi-cal field told me that because I’m active that has helped me to rehab quickly,” Eikenberry says. “They said if I was retired, typically it takes longer to rehab.”

Some advantages of working in retirement include:

• Relief from financial stress. One of the biggest worries retir-ees have is running out of money, Eikenberry says. With people liv-ing longer, that’s a legitimate con-cern. Even just a part-time job that

brings in a little extra cash can help alleviate some of the stress. He has clients who work just a few days a week and that works well for them, he says.

• Physical fitness. It’s no secret that, as people age, they tend to suffer more problems with their bodies, such as joint pains. Many jobs can keep them active and moving, making for better health.

• Mental fitness. A study pub-lished in the peer-reviewed jour-nal Neurology this year found that activities that challenge your brain may help delay symptoms of dementia. “Talk to people in their 50s and 60s and you’ll see that does scare us,” Eikenberry says. “Work gives us the ability to keep our minds active.”

Anyone considering working in retirement does need to be aware of the financial implications with Social Security, Eikenberry says.

If you wait until your full retire-ment age to draw Social Security – 66 to 67 for most people these days – you can earn as much as you like.

But if you claim Social Security early – which you can do starting at age 62 – earnings are limited to $15,720 annually. For every $2 you make over that amount, $1 is deducted from your Social Secu-rity.

That changes beginning with

the year in which you reach full retirement age. At that point, $1 is deducted for every $3 earned above a different limit. In 2016, that limit is $41,880. But the only earnings counted are those before the month in which you reach full retirement age, according to the Social Security website.

Eikenberry is happy with his de-cision to remain on the job beyond retirement age and many of the cli-ents he provides financial advice to find it rewarding, too.

“For me, there’s nothing nega-tive about working in retirement at

all,” he says.

Respect and discipline virtues that seem to have become like many other values extinct. Society, as a whole, now accepts the abuse of these as a right and uses their traditional intent only as long as it fits one’s personal needs. On most occasions, it is just as how many others interpret the Bible – using and changing the meanings for personal convenience.

No longer are children and many adults able or willing to respect others’ personal space or feel-

ings. Maybe they are incapable and maybe have become accus-tomed to today’s cold-shouldered and sometimes greedy society. And, we as adults seem to have given up on disciplining our chil-dren, sometimes for fear of legal consequences but mostly for not wanting to be “bothered” or fear of losing time that will keep us from pursuing our personal pleasures. Add to this the embarrassment that could result if our friends see, hear us or our children participating in this – it becomes more convenient to ignore it.

One of the most offensive, if not at least bothersome and trou-blesome, concerns the language (words) that is now an integral part of communicating. Young people and adults now use what was once considered vulgar and offensive language as a necessary means of communication. Words such as those beginning with f,s,d, or mf are so common that it is has become offensive to the younger

UHV criminal justice program earns national ranking

Many of the students pursuing criminal justice degrees at the Uni-versity of Houston-Victoria aren’t typical college freshmen, and the program is designed to take their needs into account.

That’s one reason the UHV Bachelor of Science in criminal justice program was ranked 17th in the nation in the Center for On-line Education’s 2016 Best Online Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice list.

“These students often are mili-tary veterans who already have careers in law enforcement or cor-rections and are looking to move

up,” said Robbie Hawkins, a UHV associate professor of criminal justice and director of the under-graduate criminal justice program. “Most of them are on rotating shifts, which means they can’t make it to face-to-face classes, so the online program is exactly what they need.”

In its ranking of UHV, the Cen-ter for Online Education stated the program focuses on helping students understand criminal be-havior as well as crime prevention methods and rehabilitation pro-cedures. The list also recognizes

UHV’s use of online platforms to reach students and the availability of technical support.

In addition to these factors, Hawkins said UHV’s criminal jus-tice degree also is set apart because of the excellent faculty. Keith Akins, an associate professor of criminal justice, has a background in terrorism research. In addition to faculty members, the university also hires adjunct instructors who have experience in law enforce-ment, including administrators in the Victoria Police Department and the Houston area.

“UHV’s undergraduate crimi-

nal justice program is an excellent example of how higher education can have a positive impact on our community,” said Jeffrey Di Leo, dean of the UHV School of Arts & Sciences. “Law enforcement professionals are instrumental to the safety and order in our society, and UHV is committed to helping these men and women be equipped for success as they serve and pro-tect our community.”

Because the students often are employed in law enforcement or corrections, there are times when the students have the latest infor-mation about new legislation or regulations that impact the field. They share the updates with in-structors, Hawkins said.

“There’s nothing typical about teaching criminal justice,” he said. “Our students are out there every day. They do dangerous work, and they bring those experiences to the classroom. There are times when the students teach us as much as we teach them.”

generations if others cannot under-stand or accept that this is the lan-guage of today. If adults ask them to refrain from their use in public it is very common to have an argu-ment ensue between the two. Ad-ditionally, if parents or guardians find out or hear an elder trying to correct the youngster they will side with the younger person (right or wrong) and chastise the adult for meddling. And, why should we expect anything different? After all, most of those adults use that language to conduct everyday con-versations.

The “pointing of the finger” to one reason, one individual or one group should be discounted as it is not one’s fault but a shared cul-pability. Others, including those adults that want respect have for-gotten some of their manners. No longer do we use the words “please, thank you nor may I help” on a regular basis. It is very com-mon to see younger adults and children neglecting to open doors, help in a bind or even greet and ac-knowledge others. Adults, seniors and elderly, and those that have for some reason or another gotten the impression that they are better than most are the worst culprits of this neglect.

Traditional respect of others and our surroundings was a common virtue and widely practiced in gen-erations past – one that came with harsh punishment by our parents and elders if ignored or abused. Even though we that lived through it, feared it, other times ridiculed it but most of time we embraced it and yes respected it. Today, we wonder when, where and how we lost it and why our children ignore it.

The cast is still the same; elders, parents, grandparents, great-great grandparents, children and yes leaders – some who may have not earned it or deserve it but by title and tradition command it. It may seem unfair and hypocritical but a return to traditional respect and discipline can help to avoid many problems, misunderstandings and may result in more respect by peers and others.

No one asks that you not be you, but observing traditional respect and discipline virtues may elimi-nate many of those misunderstand-ings, disagreement and yes fights.

hermanas y amigas) de que I al-ways talk about everyone else but me. That is not true, porque at-reves de los anos de Chemo I have admitted to many exciting and thrilling historias. Lo que pasa is that most of them can’t remember more than a few hours ago - un-less it is convenient – como the trip to Rome that I promised years ago. But, yo siempre digo que everything has its day and to get anywhere all it takes is “only one step at a time.” So all we have to do is keep on walking. What Mrs. Chemo and the rest of her support-ers can’t accept is that it (the trip) was as we used to say as kids “de puras mentiritas.”

I could hold onto the walker and kick it off. This worked just fine but as my foot lay on the ground, La Madama Chemo was quite surprised and not, too, pleased. Her mistake was that she waited for a few too many seconds before realizing what had happened. No sabia si ayudarme or ask for help. I just kept on walk-

ing and got in the car. She picked it up and because it is so heavy, she embraced it with both arms.

What made it embarrassing was, she said later, “Me dejaste allí with your damned foot! People looked at me funny as I walked around carrying the piece of metal and plastic as if I was in love with it. And, if not scared, they are prob-ably still laughing.”

Public transportation funding helps Texans

The Texas Transportation Com-mission today awarded more than $75 million in federal and state funds to transit providers who of-fer transportation services to Texas veterans, seniors, people with dis-abilities and others who need help getting to work, school, health care facilities and other important destinations.

“Independence and quality of life for our state’s public transit users will be enhanced through this funding,” said TxDOT Execu-tive Director James Bass. “We are

grateful for the collaboration with our partners around the state who ultimately are helping us provide meaningful transportation solu-tions for Texans.”

The transit agencies supported by these mobility funds reported more than 34 million trips in 2014.

Besides helping Texas tran-sit users get to work, school and health care facilities, the awarded funds also will facilitate travel to community programs and other destinations. By providing park-and-ride commuter services, van-

pools and other options for those who choose to commute via public transportation, the funds also help address congestion relief in rap-idly growing areas.

In 2016, TxDOT has admin-istered state and federal public transportation grant programs ex-ceeding $130 million. Many of these awards also include trans-portation development credits that support eligible capital project in-vestments, including vehicles, fa-cilities, equipment and preventive maintenance.

“It’s our plan to do this every year,” said DeLeon Club commit-tee member Mike Rivera. “With the help of Mr. Martinez, we’re going to select somebody else dur-ing the nest semester.”

Retiz said she is seven weeks away from completing her classes in the academy.

“I am very honored,” Retiz said. “It was a surprise to me. I have been planning to attend the acad-emy since I was little. It’s always been one of my dreams to be a police officer ever since I can re-member. I was very fortunate to be in the academy this semester under Mr. Martinez’s direction. This will be a huge help for me and my fam-ily.”

VC’s Law Enforcement Acade-my is accepting applications for its day academy to begin in January. Applications are due by Jan. 4. A night academy will conducted de-pending on demand.

AVISO DE LA SOLICITUD Y DECISIÓN PRELIMINAR PARA EL PERMISO DEL SISTEMA DE ELIMINACION DE DESCARGASDE CONTAMINANTES DE TEXAS (TPDES) PARA AGUAS RESIDUALES INDUSTRIALES RENOVACIÓN

SOLICITUD Y DECISIÓN PRELIMINAR. South Texas Electric Cooperative, Inc., P.O. Box 119, Nursery, Texas 77976, ha solicitado a la Comisión de Calidad Ambiental del Estado de Texas (TCEQ) una renovación para autorizar la descarga de una vez a través del agua de refrigeración, agua de lluvia, y los efluentes previamente monitorizados (torre de refrigeración de purga, las fuentes de desechos de bajo volumen, y el agua de lluvia) a un caudal medio diario no exceda de 34,260,000 galones por día. El borrador del permiso autoriza la descarga del efluente previamente supervisado (purga de las torres de refrigeración, fuentes de desechos volumen bajo, y las aguas pluviales) y las aguas pluviales a un flujo promedio diario no exceda de 264,000 galones por día a través del emisario 001. La TCEQ recibió esta solicitud el día 21 de abril del año 2016.

La planta está ubicada por el camino 2849 Farm-to-Market Road 447, en el Condado de Victoria, Texas. El efluente tratado es descargado al Río Guadalupe por debajo del río San Marcos en el Segmento Número 1803 de la Cuenca del Río Guadalupe. Los usos no clasificados de las aguas receptoras son elevados, usos de la vida acuática para del Río Guadalupe. Los usos designados para el Segmento Número 1803 son elevados de vida acuática; abastecimiento de agua potable, provisión de agua a la industria, agua para ostras, navegación y recreación sin contacto. ACCIÓN DEL DIRECTOR EJECUTIVO. El Director Ejecutivo puede emitir una aprobación final de la solicitud a menos que exista un pedido antes del plazo de ven-cimiento de una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso o se ha presentado un pedido de reconsideración. Si un pedido ha llegado antes del plazo de vencimiento de la audiencia o el pedido de reconsideración ha sido presentado, el Director Ejecutivo no emitirá una aprobación final sobre el permiso y enviará la solicitud y el pedido a los Comisionados de la TECQ para consideración en una reunión programada de la Comisión.

CRUNCHY CHICKEN FINGERS 8 medium skinless, boneless chicken breast halves 1 (8-ounce) carton dairy sour cream 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1-teaspoon paprika ¼ teaspoon celery salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper 1 (8-ounce) package (4 cups) herb-seasoned stuffing mix, coarsely crushed ¼ cup butter or margarine, melted

1. Cut chicken into ¾-inch wide strips; set aside. In a shallow bowl combine sour cream, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, cel-ery salt, and pepper. 2. Dip chicken strips into sour cream mixture; coat with crushed stuffing mix. Arrange chicken strips in two large shallow bak-

ing pans (pieces shouldn’t touch). Drizzle melted butter over chick-en. 3. Bake, uncovered, in a 375ºF oven about 25 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink, rotating pans after 15 minutes. Makes 10 to 12 servings.

TUNA SPOOK SANDWICHES 1 (8 ounce) can solid white tuna fish, packed in water 3 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 celery stalk, finely diced 14 slices white sandwich bread 14 raisins

1. Drain water from tuna and place in small mixing bowl; break tuna into small pieces with a fork. Mix in the mayonnaise, lemon juice, and celery. 2. Cut the bread slices with a cook-

ie cutter into the shape of a ghost. Spread 7 slices with the tuna mix-ture and cover each with a second slice of bread. Use the raisins to make the eyes on each sandwich. Serve with celery and carrot sticks.

MUMMY DOGS 1 (11-ounce) package refrigerated bread sticks (12 bread sticks) 12 jumbo frankfurters Catsup and mustard Capers

1. Preheat oven to 375ºF. Unwrap breadsticks. Stretch each bread stick to 12 inches. Wrap dough around frankfurters, letting the frankfurters show slightly through the bread. Press in capers for eyes. Bake in preheated oven for about 12 minutes or until bread is gold-en brown. Serve with catsup and mustard. Makes 12 snacks.

1. Bake each cake in a 10-inch fluted tube pan according to pack-age directions. Cook cake in pan for 15 minutes. Remove cake from pan and cool completely on a wire rack. 2. Combine frosting and powdered sugar. Use food coloring to color frosting. Place one cake, rounded side down, on serving platter. Spread a layer of frosting over top. Add second cake, rounded side up, to create pumpkin shape. Be sure to line up

the ridges of the cakes. 3. Fill the center well with trail mix to 1 inch from the top. Frost top and sides of the cake, leaving an indent at the top. Insert a wafer cookie into the top of the cake for a stem. Cut remaining cookie half diagonally. Place one half of the cookie, cut side up, on front of cake for a nose. Decorate the face as desired, using gel icing and assorted candies. If desired, decorate both sides of cake with contrasting faces.

Cahill said it is a challenge to conceal his personal political be-liefs.

“It is kind of difficult,” Cahill said. “According to our tradition, the Catholic Church does not en-dorse candidates. We publish doc-uments about issues we think are

important. People think I should endorse a candidate. We can’t. I do get some heat about it, but it doesn’t bother me too much.”

Hassan said Islam encourages its followers to vote and ended the forum with a humorous comment he saw on social media concerning the election.

“We teach your vote is very im-portant,” Hassan said. “We must choose the one who is best to lead the country and not choose on our emotions.

“I read somewhere on Facebook where someone wrote, ‘If Jesus is coming back, I hope he comes be-fore the election.’ “
