Introduction 

Rising up over the Vestfold skyline is anenormous tent in colorful patches. Inside,the Fairwind Circus spreads itself out in alarge half circle of performance space.Clowns wander the tiered benchesentertaining the audience and watching forthieves. Cutpurses are hauled up on stagewhere they are made part of the act whilethe stolen goods are returned to their ownerunder the guise of a magic act.

These clowns are expert security forces asthe Fairwind Circus consists mainly of bards,rogues, and monks. Some seek to mastertheir skills in a safe environment. Othersneed a vacation from dingy ruins oroppressive forests. A few just need the roarof approval only a large crowd can bring.

Organization 

Whatever the motivation, Fairwind Circusmembers wander into Vestfold at least oncea year to perform under the big top. Clowns

can often be seen behind the tent practicingtheir high wire skills, juggling, flips, or othertalents they hope will elevate them toperformers. Veterans offer advice and helpthe rookies achieve success. Everyone cancoexist peacefully because no one stayslong themselves.

Audiences always have a new act to see

because performers wander in and out oftown all the time. Most stay for a few weeks,and only the biggest names can commandthe crowd’s attention for an entire month.Crowds in Vestfold are fickle and have beenknown to pelt a performer with old fruit ifthey feel the act has been seen too often.

applicants who do not know his reputationfor childlike glee in every new performance.His deep voice carries across the arena andhas occasionally frightened small children.The clowns are quick with a treat and alaugh to keep the audience happy.

Some members of the Fairwind Circus serveas both Performance and Security, but mostcan not be bothered to stay in one place thatlong.

Membership (Performance) 

Fairwind Circus performers have a widevariety of skills to draw on for their shows.The more skills they master, the biggershows they can put on. All performancemembers join the Fairwind Circus asClowns.

Qualifying skills include:

• Balance

• Climb

• Escape Artist

• Jump

• Perform (comedy)

• Profession (clown)

• Sleight of Hand• Tumble

• Use Rope

Clown

• Requires four ranks in onequalifying skill or two ranks each intwo qualifying skills.

• Clowns spend 2 Time Units (TUs)annually performing in Vestfold.

Performer

• Requires five ranks each in twolif i kill

• Featured Acts are crowd favoritesand spend a total of 5 TUs annuallyperforming.

Benefits (Performance) 

Clown

• Clowns receive a +2 competencebonus to any qualifying skill in whichthey have 4 ranks.

Performer

• Performers retain the benefits ofClowns.

• Access to the Jester Prestige Class.

• Performers may choose one skill(and only one) from the list ofqualifying skills in which they have

five ranks. They may take ten withthat skill even when adverseconditions would prevent them fromdoing so.

Featured Act

• Featured Acts retain all the benefitsof Performers.

• Featured Acts gain access to legallypurchase Gloves of Dexterity +2 or +4, Glove of Storing, Slippers of Spider Climbing, or Vest of Escape .All items are purchased at a 10%discount and are non-tradable.

Membership (Security) 

A distracted audience is an easy mark, andthe Fairwind Circus fights against thestereotype of all rogues as thieves. Theykeep a careful eye on the crowd to ensurepickpockets and cutpurses do not spoil theshow. All security members join asBouncers while their trustworthiness is

team, Eyes spend a total of 5 TUsannually working.

Notable NPCs

Erling Erson and Tolman Ocklam: TheFlying Pembice Brothers are renownedacrobats and semi-retired adventurers whocall Vestfold home. The two halflings metwhile exploring lairs in Dragonia and joinedforces when most of their adventuringgroups were eaten. Each realized they hadbeen complacent among their less agile

companions, and they pushed themselves toextraordinary feats. When they weresatisfied that there was no wall they couldnot climb, no pit they could not jump, and nofall they could not survive, they searched fora new challenge.

Performing in the Fairwind Circus (withassumed names to keep away their

enemies) gave them a new goal. Thecrowds were quick to grow tired of theirtricks. Balancing swords on their noses anddiving through flaming hoops was notenough, and they began to travel thecountryside looking for innovative ideas toadd to their own. They sometimes take onapprentices during these trips, and the twohave recently opened an acrobatics school

on non-show days. Big Nake allows themthe use of the tent for a percentage of theirfees and first rights to sign promisingstudents.

Delalsia the Unflinching: Originally a monkwith the Clan of the Great Stone, Delalsia

She continues to stretch her abilities andexperience new ways of accomplishing evenroutine tasks.

She is a sturdy dwarven woman standingbelow average height. Her long hair istwisted in a complex pattern and kept inplace with iron pins. She wears simpleclothing around the big top, but she hasgathered a costume of rich gem tones whenperforming. She is accompanied around thestands by her pet mole that a druid

acquaintance taught a few simple tricks.Delalsia and Thenten are favorites of manylocal dwarf and gnome children. Shecurrently leads the security team in thievescaptured without the crowd’s notice.
