EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Along 27 months of project, RTD performers have developed a series of prototypes that make it possible
to provide size recommendations, fitting predictions and a virtual try-on simulation of childrenswear
without making the children try them on (cf. Kidsize video www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GuHnlJ_xqU).
During the last 3 months of the project, these prototypes have been intensively tested by manufacturers
and users in real and simulated use contexts providing very promising results. Moreover, along this
testing and afterwards important upgrades and redesigns of the prototypes were followed.
During the testing, Kidsize exhibited an excellent performance, being consistent with parents’ opinion for
87% of the size recommendations made. Several improvements should be conducted before shifting
from prototypes to products, including improving the robustness of prototypes, facilitating the picture
taking process in the app, and making the virtual try-on more realistic.
Manufacturers, retailers and consumers agree in qualifying the tools developed as very useful for both
selling/buying childrenswear online and also at the brick-and-mortar stores since parents usually go
shopping without their children and when they bring them they do not try on the garments at the shop.
Moreover, despite being just prototypes, the Back-office tools, the Kidsize App and the web user
interface were qualified as easy-to-use, comfortable and adapted to their needs.
Kidsize Prototypes can be accessed at:

Deliverable D6.1 TEST A KIDSIZE [GA no. 606091]
6 of 41
1. INTRODUCTION
This deliverable presents the methods followed by IBV for the validation of Kidsize as well as their results
and the conclusions of the tests.
Kidsize is a complex tool that involves different tools and user roles, which are: consumers, producers
and retailers. In order to test the tools developed from the perspective of all the target users of Kidsize,
three tests where proposed in the DOW: “Test A” for Producers, “Test B” for consumers at ecommerce
or at home, and “Test C” consumers at the retail store.
This deliverable contains one section dedicated to each of the tests including the materials, methods,
results and discussions for each of the tests. The last section of the deliverable includes the conclusions
for the three tests and an insight to the technical work to be developed in the following months after
the project and the potential R&D work to be conducted.
1.1. Prototypes used during WP6
Since the release of the different prototypes of subsystems/components (i.e. D3.3, D2.3, D4.3 and D5.2)
they have been tested, updated and improved iteratively by RD Performers (ISRI, Ozongo and IBV).
ANNEX I includes the user’s guide for the final version of the back-offices for manufacturers. The partial
performance of the components (i.e. size allocation models and the Kidsize app) and their upgrades are
described in the following paragraphs. This way, this final deliverable of the project also acts as an up-to-
date gathering of the most relevant information related to project prototypes.
Kidsize app
Since its release in May 2015 (Deliverable D3.3), Kidsize App has greatly evolved within WP5 and WP6.
These changes were important in order to launch a proper user validation in WP6. There have been two
types of improvements/upgrades of the App: (A) the improvement of the usability and (B) the
optimisation of the performance of body metrics’ algorithms. All the body measurements included in
Kidsize project were implemented according to international ISO standards 85591 and 7250
2.
1 ISO 8559:1989 Garment construction and anthropometric surveys -- Body dimensions
2 ISO 7250-1:2008 Basic human body measurements for technological design -- Part 1: Body
measurement definitions and landmarks

Kidsize App for babies is much more accurate than taking the measurements by traditional
anthropometric methods and is slightly less accurate than experts. There is potential for improving
several measurements by correcting the observed bias.
Kidsize App as a measuring instrument clearly outperforms in accuracy and precision self-reported
measurements by users, which is the measuring method used by 95% of the potential competitors of
Kidsize in the size allocation and fitting prediction solutions market. Kidsize App therefore brings to
Kidsize a clear advantage.
Kidsize App PRECISION in measurement estimation (MAD) is comparable to the one of high resolution
3D scanners or to manual measurements taken by experts.
Kidsize App ACCURACY in measurement estimation (MAD) is much better than those of manual
measurements taken by non-experts, and as expected, is lower than those of manual measurements
taken by experts or obtained from High resolution scanners. Furthermore, 3D reconstruction algorithms
present an accuracy in measurement estimation (MAD) as good as manual measurements taken by
experts or High 3D resolution scanners, which indicates that there is a clear potential for improvement if
image segmentation in real contexts is improved.
Kidsize App 3D REPRESENTATION OF BODY SHAPE is quite accurate (~2mm) and body shapes of
captured children are clearly recognisable. Face (as expected) and head back shapes are the less
representative areas.
Kidsize Validation conducted along WP5 has permitted us to identify a series of potential improvement
areas that could be resolved with limited effort after the project.
Size allocation models
Size Allocation models and software have been improved and upgraded with respect to D2.3 and D5.2 in
terms of performance and the suitability to deal with any sizing system.
As previously indicated in Section 3 of Deliverable D2.2 and Section 3 of Deliverable D2.3, Kidsize
algorithms have greatly evolved within WP5 and WP6. A complete methodology has been established in
order to generate multi-fitting algorithms for any SME from the description of their sizing system.
Different models have been created considering the different set of available measures for each sizing
system: physical mannequins from which any measurement can be obtained or sizing charts with a
reduced set of measurements.

2. TEST A: Validation of the back-offices for manufacturers
The goal of TEST A was to assess the back-office for the garment upload process (cf. ANNEX I) in terms
of: adaptability to their means/ processes, ease-of-use; ease-of-learning and satisfaction.
To this end, the two SME partners of the project used the developed tools to upload a set of real
garments to the Kidsize system to make Kidsize available for that set of garments in an e-commerce. The
manufacturers’ back-office is accessible at: http://kidsize.manufacturers.dev.increnta.com/en
2.1. TEST A: Materials and methods
Participants. Three technicians from the SMEs participated as users; and one technician from IBV
participated as “expert reference”.
Garments. Each SME selected 3 sets of 10 garments including baby and children products (a total of 30
product references by SME). Products selected are listed in Appendix A1.
Development of the tests. Each of the three participants was requested to upload a set of 10 products
in three sessions conducted in different days. The protocol document provided to the participants is
included in Appendix A2. Prior to the conduction of the first session, the three participants received a
remote training session in the use of the back-offices using examples. In the training session they saw
the expert using the web interfaces to perform similar tasks to those requested to them in the test. After
the three sessions the participants were interviewed.
Objective Assessment. Objective data from the testing sessions were obtained from three sources:
• Efficiency. During each session several parameters related with usability of websites were
gathered using a mouse tracking algorithm implemented in JavaScript at the back-office:
- Total time invested in the session
- Number of clicks
- Time between clicks
- Inefficiency of mouse movements (cf. Appendix A3 for analysis details)
• Effectiveness. After each session, an expert evaluated the data uploaded by each participant and
recorded seven parameters related to task completion and success:
- No. of garments uploaded (% incompletion of the task)
- Total no. of errors (overall success)
- Partial no. of errors at season, gender, type, size list and pattern data.
Subjective Assessment. At the end of each session the participants were requested to fill in an online
questionnaire which included open questions to report problems and suggestions and four multiple
choice questions related to:
- Ease-of-use
- Need for assistance during testing
- Satisfaction
- Identification of problematic functions of the application

Objective Assessment
Table 1 and Figure 1 summarise the parameters gathered in the test by session (S1, S2 and S3) and
include the reference values obtained by IBV Expert. The number of errors is expressed as a percentage
of the total possible errors (i.e. no. of garments per user and per session).

Figure 1: Evolution of the recorded effectiveness parameters along sessions of Test C
In a general overview we can observe that:
• All the users completed 100% of the proposed tasks since the first session and the no. of errors
was already low from the Session 1, indicating that the tool is easy-to-use.
• The users achieved similar efficiency and effectiveness to those of the expert in 2-3 sessions,
showing that the tool is very easy-to-learn.
• Garment data batches can be uploaded to Kidsize in less than 10 minutes.
• Despite there is a significant reduction in the no. of errors from Session 1 to Session 2, there is a
slight increase from Session 2 to Session 3. This depicts the pattern of users that feel confident
with the tool and reduce their attention level thus increasing the no. of errors. The errors in
“pattern data upload” and in “garment type” are reduced as the user acquires expertise; however,

the errors made in the “size lists” or in the “garment gender” are maintained or even slightly
increased due to this fact.
Subjective Assessment
All the participants found that the tool was easy-to-use and were satisfied with its functionality. All
the participants reported to have completed the session and none of them requested assistance to
Ozongo. At the interview, all reported that the tool was adapted to their means and processes.
However, some minor problems were reported and some additional features were requested.
Reported Problems
Despite participants did not report any problem at the “login process” or when “uploading garments
individually”, in half of the sessions (Figure 2) the participants reported problems when:
• “Editing garment data”, which was caused by a bug found at several edition functions.
• “Uploading batch garment basic data (csv file)”, which was caused by using incorrect headers
and formats because the file structure to import data was not explicitly specified.
• “Uploading batch garment pattern data (zip file)”, which was caused by using a wrong file name;
in some cases due to lower and upper case letters mismatch.
Figure 2: Frequency of problems encountered during sessions
Corrective actions were conducted after the testing including providing better instructions and file
format and structure specifications, providing a more precise error feedback in the back-office and
identifying and correcting the bug for editing garments individually.
Additional Features Requested
The participants requested that it would be useful to include the following additional features:
o To see a small garment image at the garment list, and a bigger one at the individual editing
screen, to help to better explore the garments and to have a visual feedback after uploading a
product that enables to verify the association of the uploaded data and the reference.
o Adding a Help section
o Providing better error/warning feed-back when uploading data in batch, in particular messages
warning when a file is duplicated or before overwriting an existing garment data.
These requests have already been included in last version of the Manufacturers’ Back-office (ANNEX I).

3. TEST B: Validation with end-users in an e-commerce context
The goal of Test B was to assess Kidsize Solution in an e-commerce context (e.g. home use) in terms of:
functionality, usability, usefulness, ease of use, satisfaction and performance.
To this end, ISRI, Ozongo and IBV set up a fully working demo shop including the SME partners’ products
to enable that Kidsize solution was tested and evaluated by a group of target end users. Kidsize App is
accessible at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.ibv.kidsizeapp and the demo shop is
accessible at http://modainfantil.increnta.com/en
3.1. TEST B: Materials and methods
Participants. 40 parents with at least one child aged between 0 to 12 years-old participated. They were
chosen in order to have a balanced sample in gender of children and in age distribution. The users
needed to use a computer, tablet or phone for entering online shop and an Android phone for the app.
Garments. 19 garments were selected (among the 60 uploaded by SMEs to Kidsize DDBB in Test A) to be
included in Tests B and C (Figure 3). ISRI modelled 11 of these garments in 3D for the Virtual Try-on.
Babies (0-2 years old) Boys (3-12 y.o.) Girls (3-12 y.o.)
Figure 3: Products for Test B and C
Development of the test. Each of the participants was requested to follow a testing protocol at home
and to fill in an online questionnaire. Two testing protocols were used, one for babies (aged 0-3) and one
for children (aged 3-12). 25% of the participants (i.e. 10) were requested to conduct the test 3 times. IBV
personnel were available to receive additional feedback via telephonic interview or focus group sessions.
The testing protocol included the steps needed to use Kidsize in an online purchase process (cf.
appendices B1 and B2 for further details):
1. Going to the demo shop http://modainfantil.increnta.com/en and choosing a product
2. Finding Kidsize button, clicking it, going to Google Play and downloading the app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.ibv.kidsizeapp
3. Signing in, introducing basic child data, taking the pictures (only for children aged 3-12) and
checking that all the child data is correctly gathered.
4. Going back to the shop, and getting the size recommendation and virtual-try-on visualisation.
5. Filling in the questionnaire (incl. test-like and open questions)

As in any user testing with prototypes the number of incidences was low to medium but its severity was
mainly low. However, this intensive testing was extremely useful to identify and resolve bugs,
incompatibilities and instabilities of the prototypes.
Open-end questions
In the questionnaire the users were asked for the best and the worst aspects of Kidsize in an open-end
question, which was answered by 30 users. Results are provided below; the numbers in brackets
indicate frequency of the statement:
• Best aspects highlighted by users were: useful to buy online (10), easy-to-use (10), fast and
comfortable (2), nice instructions (2) and easy-to-install (1).
• Worst aspects highlighted by users were: instructions are too long (1), it is difficult to take the
right pictures (3), the app does not warn that it needs internet connection (1), not able to
virtually try-on some sizes (3), virtual try-on is not realistic (2), garment colours are not realistic
(1), lack of information about traffic lights and fitting areas (2).
Summary of results
Kidsize solution was very positively assessed by parents, which considered it very promising for
resolving their concerns when buying without trying the garments. In general terms it was considered
very useful, reliable and easy-to-use.
Some improvements are required in terms of robustness (avoiding incidents, breakdowns and
instabilities), facilitating the picture taking process (improving instructions and adding some new
smarter segmentation algorithms), and improving the realism and reliability of the virtual try-on.

4. TEST C: Validation with end-users in a retail shop context
The goal of Test C was to validate the KIDSIZE system in a physical shop and in a recreated multi-brand
shop (cf. Appendix C1). Since all garment sizes were available at the shops, the participants tried them
on their children to compare Kidsize output with the actual fitting and size.
Figure 4: Validation at physical store
In this test Kidsize was assessed in relation to:
• Reliability of the size recommendation and fitting prediction by quantifying the number of
correct size recommendations.
• Ease-of-use of Kidsize recommendations and UIs (app and web).
• Satisfaction of parents and retailers with the Kidsize experience.
• Suitability of Kidsize in a retail shop context and the benefits of the Kidsize shopping experience.
4.1. TEST C: Materials and Methods
Participants. 30 children (23 parents) participated in this test. They were selected in order to have a
balanced sample according to age ranges: 10 children were aged between 0 and 2 years old, 10 between
3 and 7 and another 10 between 8 and 12.
Garments. Same 19-garment set used in Test B, cf. Figure 3 (p. 9) and Appendix C2.
Development of the tests. Prior to the testing, the photograph environment was adapted to assure a
clear background. At the physical shop, the mirror in the changing room was covered with a white fabric.
Each participant was asked to use the Kidsize app and to go shopping 4 garments in the demo shop. The
4 selected garments were randomly assigned to each participant according to a balanced design of
experiments (cf. Appendix C3). The steps followed in the test were:
1. Parents were informed of the KIDSIZE project objective and what the test would consist in and
signed an informed consent form.
2. Each child participating in the test was assigned a user code from Table 7 (VKID_XXX for children
aged 3 or older and BVKID_XXX for children under 3).
3. Parents were asked to follow the same protocol as for test B (cf. appendices B1 and B2). Height
and weight of the children were measured with a stadiometer and a scale.
4. While parents were conducting the test they were asked to share their thoughts and opinions
with respect to the ease of use, ease of understanding and their level of satisfaction. An
observer collected their observations and comments on ‘think aloud’ forms.

6. Children tried on the size(s) recommended by experts and parents according to the Kidsize for
the 4 selected garments. The fitting of the garments was assessed by the parent.
Figure 6: Garment fitting tests
Objective Assessment. Each recommendation of Kidsize consists in an expert-based and a parent-based
size allocation and local fitting prediction by areas. Expert based recommendations correspond to an
optimal fitting for using garments now, while parent based recommendations are suitable for a longer
use (the current season and the next one). Based on the parents’ evaluations of the recommended sizes,
the reliability of the Kidsize was quantified.

Figure 7. Example of KIDSIZE recommendations and fitting prediction
Subjective Assessment. Staff of theretail shop (3 people) was interviewed regarding the benefits offered
by the Kidsize solution in childrenswear shopping experience and its suitability to the retail context. In
addition, ‘think aloud’ methods were used to assess user experience regarding the ease of use, ease of
understanding and end-user satisfaction.
4.2. TEST C: Results and Discussion
Objective Assessment
The reliability of the Kidsize allocation system has been quantified and compared with the most popular
alternatives, i.e. size selection according to age- or stature-based size charts. Results are listed in Table 5
with respect to the size allocation method (age-based, stature-based and kidsize) and recommendation
criteria (parents or experts).
Age-based Stature-based Kidsize
Expert 42% 54% 85%
Parents 48% 59% 88%
Total 47% 59% 87%
Table 5. Reliability results and comparison of the size allocator system
From the table above, we can observe that:
• The reliability of Kidsize was higher than 85%, while the alternative methods obtained results
between 45-60%.
• Kidsize outperformed stature- and age-based size recommendations by 20- 40% of predictions.
In addition to this, no significant differences of performance between sizes, type of garment (upper
body, lower body and full body), age or gender were found.
Subjective Assessment by Retailers
The staff at the retail shop was interviewed and pointed out the benefits offered by Kidsize when
shopping without the children, since parents usually do it alone. They suggested the use of a tablet

device in order to assist buyers in the retail shop context. In addition, it was necessary to adapt the
changing room area in order to correctly take the photographs by covering the mirrors easily and nicely.
Subjective Assessment by parents
The most common problems found during test C and the improvements proposed were:
• Instructions
Some users were reluctant to press the ‘Let’s start’ button before reading some instructions. It
was advised to show instructions before the ‘Let’s start’ button. Also instructions for each
photograph should appear before taking each of the two. Some parents did not pay attention to
the information provided by the area fitting predictions. Therefore, the colour coded information
should be remarked and explained.
During the picture taking process, the instructions regarding pulled back hair and tight clothes
were not clearly understood and there were no instructions about socks. It should be specified
that plain-coloured (non-patterned) underwear/swimwear and socks should be worn, avoiding
socks. Users should be given the choice of wearing a swimming cap to cover their hair. There
were problems with posture in photographs: rotation of the trunk, open hands in frontal
photograph, wrong feet position, leaning against the wall, arms showing in lateral photograph.
Instructions should provide a more detailed description of the photograph posture (i.e. arms,
fists, and feet) and illustrations of right and wrong procedures should be put together.
• App feedback for errors and warnings
When the 3D reconstruction failed it was due to mobile device malfunctioning or incorrect
photographs but there was no warning. Failure detection should be implemented and together
with a warning which indicates repetition of the photographs when necessary.
Status message remains on screen when the 3D reconstruction has finished. It should disappear
when the app is ready to shop.
• Aesthetics
Negative connotations were associated with red coloured texts and items in the app. Therefore
this colour should be avoided and only used in error messages.
• Virtual try-on
Users reported remarkable variations in the style and/or the fitting of the garments with respect
to reality. An important amount of the parents (14/23) would not have chosen the garments
based on the virtual try-on (VTO) visualisation. Therefore, the VTO must be improved in order to
be implemented in a commercial solution. In addition, discrepancies between the colour coded
fitting predictions and the 3D visualization of fitting should be avoided.
Most frequent problems were related to photo instructions, status messages and virtual try-on. Most of
the problems related to the app and web UI had been resolved at the periodic releases of app updates
during WP6, i.e. during and after the testing.

5. CONCLUSIONS AND FUTURE WORK
The results from the testing conducted along WP6 show that Kidsize has achieved project objectives
stated at DoW and met the user requirements and specs gathered in D1.2.
Moreover, manufactures, retailers and consumers participating in the testing were satisfied with results
and Kidsize solution proved to be useful in both retail and online purchase contexts.
5.1. Conclusions for producers/manufacturers
According to Test A results, it can be concluded that the back-office prototype developed in the project
is fast, easy-to-use, very easy-to-learn and well adapted to company means and technicians’ abilities.
It will require a better documentation (i.e. clear specifications for the csv and zip file batch uploads) and
some minor bug fixing before entering the production stage.
5.2. Conclusions for consumers and retailers
According to results from Tests B and C, it can be concluded that Kidsize is useful and easy-to-use.
Moreover, Kidsize clearly outperforms state-of-the-art solutions in terms of reliability of size
recommendations.
Nevertheless, several improvements should be conducted before shifting from prototypes to products,
namely in terms of robustness of prototypes (failure-proof), of usability and speed of the picture taking
process, and, especially making the virtual try-on more realistic (cf. §5.3).
The following sections go into more detail for each of the aspects assessed.
Reliability of the size prediction
• The average reliability of the size prediction was 87%.
• The KIDSIZE allocation system clearly outperformed alternative methods of size prediction.
• Better results were obtained for brands using a more extensively described sizing system.
• Some consistency problems were reported in parents recommendations due to mismatches
between the fitting predictions and the fit visualised at the virtual try-on.
Usability of the app and web UI
• Best Kidsize features highlighted by users were its ease-of-use and its instructions.
• Most frequent problems were taking photographs, status messages and virtual try-on.
Suitability of Kidsize for retailers
• Kidsize was appreciated by retailers because their customers usually buy clothes for their
children without them (and those that bring them do not try them on). Having the possibility to
assist them with a tool like Kidsize would be very useful to support their size recommendations,
to differentiate from other retailers and reduce returns.
• Nevertheless, retail shops of SMEs are small and the changing room area should be adapted in
order to correctly take the photographs, e.g. by covering the mirrors fast, nicely and easily.
Suitability of Kidsize for consumers
Deliverable D6.1 CONCLUSIONS KIDSIZE [GA no. 606091]
19 of 41
• Kidsize was very appreciated by consumers which highlighted its usefulness to buy
childrenswear either at the shops or on the Internet.
• Parents reported that, in general, the level of information provided by Kidsize recommendations
(experts + parents) and virtual try-on was adequate.
• Parents also reported that Kidsize solution was perceived as safe and reliable in terms of data
privacy and personal data protection.
Satisfaction
• Most users testing Kidsize liked the KIDSIZE experience and would like to have Kidsize in all the
childrenswear brands they buy. They would also recommend using KIDSIZE to friends and family.
They thought KIDSIZE will resolve their concerns and doubts when buying childrenswear.
• As expected in any prototype solution under intensive user testing, frequency and severity of the
incidents that users had while using Kidsize were low to medium. Some common problems
encountered when using KIDSIZE were not being able to virtually try-on some sizes and several
breakdowns of the app and the web UI.
5.3. Future work
In order to shift from the fully working prototypes developed in the project to commercial solutions
several improvements will be required at the different subsystems/components:
• Kidsize as a whole would require an aesthetic redesign in order to communicate a unique brand
image in all its components. It would also require making all the components much more robust
and failure-proof.
• Kidsize App requires even more detailed instructions regarding posture, attire and hair, in order
to ensure that photographs are always taken correctly. Eventually, segmentation algorithms
could be improved to be automatized and not to delegate some decisions on the user.
• The virtual try-on (VTO) should enable to personalise the child’s avatar including additional
features and textures (hairstyles, hair colour, skin tones, eye colours, face types, etc.). It also
should be improved by providing a more realistic modelling of garment textures and higher
consistency with the fitting predictions.
• Back-offices will require clearer specifications for the csv and zip file batch uploads, as well as
and some minor bug fixing. Eventually, creating direct interfaces to link the most common e-
commerce back-office platforms to Kidsize would make a great improvement.

(2) The garments selected should correspond to the following garment types: short sleeve body, long
sleeve t-shirt, long trousers, full body romper, dress, long sleeve shirt, short sleeve t-shirt, skirt
(3) The garments selected should correspond to the following sizes: 0 months, 1 month, 3 months, 6
months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, 6 years, 7 years, 8 years, 10
years and 12 years.
(4) All the garments selected should include at least the following additional information to import as a
zip file (please remember that the folders included in the zip file should have exactly the same name
as the reference of the garment in the Kidsize system): size table (or product sheet) and one image of
the garment.
(5) You must have all the garment information (basic data plus additional files) ready before each
session, so the garment upload process is as fluent as possible.
(6) Once you login, the session has to be carried out without interruption, in one go. If you log out, we
will consider that the session has ended.
(7) Once you complete each session, you must access the following link and answer the online
questionnaire.

Appendix A3: Inefficiency of mouse movement
To determine the usability of the system we analysed the path used by users between the different
touches on the screen.
The path used by users between the different clicks on the screen was analysed. The algorithm penalizes
movements that have a random behaviour. When the user knows the position of the relevant
information, the movement from source to the target is expected to be as straight as possible. Figure 8
shows the path of two clicks.
Figure 8. Path analysis between two clicks.
The calculated variable is the inefficiency of the movement (S), which represents the mean of the
trajectories between two clicks along the task:
• l(i) is the spatial distance between ith
sampled point of the path and the click
• d(i) is the spatial distance between ith sampled point of the path and the next one (i+1)
• N is the number of samples of the path
The equation returns a value greater than zero, where the result of a straight path would be 0. The mean
value of the path efficiency for all tasks and users was obtained.
