>>Fellow role-players, I hope you've had a good week. Remember that our "Vanished Lands: A New Dawn" telecom session for tonight (Sunday, 16 March 2014) will start around 7:30 p.m. Eastern time because Janice and I will be getting back from a concert.

>>Beruk and Sara, please let Thomas know your availability for anime next Saturday, March 22. We could meet at his place in Lexington, Mass., that afternoon or evening. We can also talk about it at Jason's "Glassworks: the Devil's Den" superhero scenario tomorrow.

>>In addition, note that I won't be able to run next Sunday -- I've got to pick up Janice at the airport -- so let me know who of you might be interested in a game on Friday or Saturday night instead.

>>We'll have a few more scheduling hiccups in April and May due to family visits and travel, but I expect our Asian-style fantasy campaign to keep going strong! Remember to review your Player Character records on Obsidian Portal.

>>When we left your diplomatic escorts, they were at the town of Kuan Chou, where they had incapacitated a man in a yellow sash who had spotted Lady Yun Aei-Yong on your way to Sogewa, capital of Tong Sheng....

>>Byron, I now have some USB memory sticks, so let me know what else besides MERP content you might want. Also, we still need to figure out the details for a crossover session.

>>Take it easy, and I'll see you all virtually later! -Gene

>Telecom game Fri or Sat? Just curious to know if we ever got any consensus or quorum (both probably spelled wrong) for any kind of telecom game for Friday or Saturday night?

>Would be happy to play a higher-level game -- or even better to play a one-shot "Star Trek" game! Let me know -- I need some warning with regard to scheduling things for Friday night. -Bruce K.

>>[20 March 2014:] Bruce and fellow role-players, we don't yet have consensus for a telecom one-shot for this coming Friday or Saturday night.

>>Sara and I will probably be meeting Thomas & Kai-Yin for anime on Saturday afternoon, and Beruk may not be available because of work. Geoff isn't available, and I haven't heard back from Dexter or Byron. When and what we play will depend on who participates. Guys? I'll try to touch base with people by phone tonight. -Gene

>Sounds good that we are ready to go tomorrow! Let's play a fast and loose rules-wise -- Star Trek! Trek -- Trek -- Trek! :) -Bruce K.

>>Fellow role-players, after speaking with several of you tonight, here's the plan for this weekend's telecom game. I'll be running a one-shot starting at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow, Friday, 21 March 2014.

>>So far, Dexter, Sara, and Bruce plan to log in, and Byron and Josh, let us know if you'll be able to join the virtual session. Beruk and Geoff aren't available. Here's what we've narrowed it down to:-Fantasy: Our "Vanished Lands: A New Dawn" adventuring party has

just arrived at Sogewa, capital of Tong Sheng. Even with a few Player Characters absent, there's a lot to see and do in the city. Byron is interested in the higher-level "Holy Steel," but we probably won't be able to prepare enough P.C.s in time.

-Superheroes: It has been a while since we've played in my "S.J.I." setting. We could use a rules-light system like FATE "Accelerated Edition" or something even simpler.

-Science fiction: Bruce is eager for a "Star Trek" scenario, and Dex noted that we could easily revisit "Vortex."

>>What does each of you think? Note that Sara, Josh, and I will be spending Saturday afternoon at Thomas' place, but we might be able to get back on Skype that evening if people are interested.

>>I'm posting this on both the Google and Yahoo message boards, so let me know if you have any questions or ideas. See some of you soon! -Gene

>I will play anything other folks want to, though I need to know the likely time slot. Saturday night may be best for me. Sorry, Gene that I was not able to return your calls today. We were at the zoo all day and then out to dinner (Spring Break for the kids). -Byron

>Actually, my shift on Saturday ends around 7:30 pm, barring a late night, which I can skip. I might be able to make it then. -Beruk A.

>>Beruk and Byron, note that Dexter, Sara, and Bruce have already replied that they're available tonight. I should be available on Saturday as well, and we can play it by ear as far as what we'll be playing.

>>We'll be online at about 7:30 p.m. Eastern time tonight; what time is good for people tomorrow?

>>I plan to prepare some one-page summaries for the potential one-shots that don't take place in the "Vanished Lands" or "Vortex" settings. Later, -Gene

>I would love to do a Star Trek scenario -- but I am up for the "Vanished Lands" or superheroes as well. See everyone at 7:30. -Bruce K.

>>Fellow role-players, I hope that you enjoyed our "Star Trek" game! Beruk, we missed you, but Bruce and I plan to be online again around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, 22 March 2014.

>>Dexter, Sara, and Josh may join us, but Byron and Geoff can't. As before, what we play will depend on who's available. Josh also proposed some steampunk/wuxia scenarios.

>>I look forward to seeing some of you online, -Gene

>>Fellow role-players, here are my notes for our "Star Trek" telecom scenario of this past weekend:

"Space, the final frontier. Our starship's mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life forms and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no one has gone before."

Almost four decades after the Enterprise-E fought the Borg and Remans [Nemesis], among others, the United Federation of Planets and other interstellar states in the Alpha Quadrant are slowly recovering from wars and ecological disasters. A refitted vessel takes a new crew on its first missions of defense, diplomacy, and exploration....>>Player Characters for Gene D.'s "Star Trek: Restoration"

space opera one-shot, using D20/FATE house rules, Friday, 21 March 2014:

-"Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Kyerak" [Bruce K.]-half-Vulcan with a temper, in the U.S.S. Rotha's command division http://www.poptower.com/jake-gyllenhaal-picture-48160.htm

-"Lt. Jarric Jameson" [Dexter V.H.]-male genetically modified human colonist (former Maquis) communications and wilderness survival expert http://database.alpha-command.com/images/thumb/d/de/RyanKent-01.jpg/300px-RyanKent-01.jpg

-"Lt. Orzzek Kalifa" [Byron V.O.]-male Andorian (blue-skinned humanoid with white hair and antennae), assertive science officer http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100313183155/startrek/images/thumb/a/a2/Ortees_Sharad.jpg/220px-Ortees_Sharad.jpg

-"Lt. Mari Killu" [Sara F.]-female Caitian (felinoid) security/tactical officer http://www.theautumncat.com/image/mresswm.jpg

-"Lt. Boran' Gorir" [Josh C.]-male Jem-Hadar (Dominion soldier), aggressive envoy/engineer http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/sto.gamepedia.com/d/da/Jem%27Hadar_char.jpg

>>Episode 1: Old and new foes>>"Stardate 95248 (1 April 2418):" The U.S.S. Rotha, NCC

1993-C, a refitted Ambassador-class ship, picks up three passengers from the U.S.S. Tempest. Capt. Andelina Nobatu is ordered to take them into the Neutral Zone to be relayed to Qo'nos, the Klingon homeworld.

Capt. Nobatu later convenes a meeting of her command crew, as well as supporting junior officers [the P.C.s]. The Terran human asks the science division to check for star systems and planets in case the ship needs to hide or resupply en route.

Engineers are tasked with improving efficiency, while tactical officers prepare for the inevitable engagement with ships that ignore diplomatic protocols. After reporting to their superiors, the junior officers meet in the "Starlight Lounge."

http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081207025604/memory-gamma/images/7/79/Ambassador2.png

They compare notes as Bolian bartender Mr. Vallcin brings drinks. Lt. Jarric Jameson asked Betazed communications head Lt. Artemis Borellis for permission to work with the engineers on a cloak or other countermeasures to Klingon and Romulan technology. Lt. Kyerak and security chief Pierre McDonough assigned guards to watch the guest quarters.

Lt. Orzzek Kalifa and Lt. Boran' Gorir checked Starfleet records for solar systems between Earth and Qo'nos. The scientist and engineer identify Acamar (Theta Eridani), which had been affected during a Borg incursion, and Khitomer, site of past negotiations between the U.F.P. and the Klingon Empire.

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/AcamarLt. Gorir and genetically enhanced Lt. Jameson also worked with chief engineer Lt.Cmdr. Akira Gorou to optimize the Rotha's systems. Dr. Jones, the holographic chief medical officer, prepared sickbay, and Trill first officer Cmdr. Nasami Wahid oversaw crew readiness.

Chief McDonough assigned Lt. Mari Killu to work with other crew members to ensure that the passenger handoff goes smoothly. Lt. K'dex, the three-armed, three-legged Edosian science officer, scanned for possibly cloaked enemy craft.

http://www.trekbrasilis.org/tbweblog/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/arex.jpg

The junior officers' discussion is cut short when Chief McDonnough contacts Lt. Killu to tell the Caitian to investigate the guest cabins. Apparently, the guards aren't responding. Cmdr. Wahid orders Lt. Kyerak to accompany her.

http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080323012542/memoryalpha/en/images/4/43/Unnamed_Enterprise-E_Security_8,_First_Contact.jpg

The Caitian and half-Vulcan find En. Thompson regaining consciousness. He tells them that the Orion, Gorn, and a hooded guest emerged from their quarters and refused to wait. En. Jonas ran after them.

Lt. Kyerak and Lt. Killu draw their Type 2 phasers and ask the ship's computer where the aliens have gone. It responds that they are on Holodeck 3. Instead of an Orion harem or a Gorn environment, the Starfleet personnel find a room full of humming machinery.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Type_2_phaserhttp://www.rabittooth.com/StarTrekPhotoManipulations.htm

D'naar, a green-skinned Orion trader, claims that he just wanted to demonstrate water-purification equipment he had learned

about in his travels to "Hand of Giblets," the reptilian Gorn representative of the Klingon Empire.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/sto.gamepedia.com/thumb/f/f0/Orion_Male_Engineering_Officer_Candidate.png/260px-Orion_Male_Engineering_Officer_Candidate.png

http://pearlsofgeekdom.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/hands-cgi-gorn.jpg

En. Jones appears with a rumpled uniform. Kyerak subtly uses telepathy to communicate with Mari, who also senses that something is wrong. From the bridge, Lt. Kalifa and Lt. Gorir can tell that the gear in the holodeck has overridden security controls and is drawing extra power.

The Andorian and Jem'Hadar try to tell Kyerak, but their signals are jammed. Orzzek informs Capt. Nobatu of the situation, and Boran' grabs his short sword and heads to the holodeck.

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20060415002720/startrek/images/b/ba/Kartakin.jpg

Chief McDonnough and Lt. Jameson try to shut down the unauthorized energy drain, and they find that the ship's shields are fluctuating in a patter, presumably to broadcast a signal. The captain orders a full stop.

In Holodeck 3, Hands of Giblets [Byron/Non-Player Character] leaps toward Lt. Killu. D'naar [Josh/N.P.C.] disintegrates En. Thompson. En. Jonas hides among the machinery. Kyerak stuns the Orion pirate, and Mari shoots at the Gorn emissary.

Lt. Gorir arrives, and he runs after En. Jones. Lt. Kalifa asks Lt. Borellis for help restoring communications. Lt. Kyerak eventually stuns Hands of Giblets, and Lt. Killu restrains the Orion and Gorn before going to aid Lt. Gorir. Other tactical and medical teams arrive and secure the perimeter.

Boran' recognizes some of the machinery and implements the LaForge Protocol. He and Orzzek manage to shut it down, but the signal has been sent as the Rotha entered the Neutral Zone.

Mari shoots at En. Jonas, destroying a personal holo-emitter and revealing that he is in fact an Undine (formerly known as Species 8472; the medical team later finds the actual ensign, who has been killed).

http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx208/Xamikaze330/General%20Star%20Trek/Species8472scan-whitedit.jpg

The Undine hits Lt. Gorir again, and Lt. Kyerak and Lt. Killu shoot at it. Mari stuns the gray-skinned alien, and Boran' beheads it. Kyerak berates the Jem'Hadar for giving in to his bloodlust, but Lt. Jameson notes that D'naar and Hands of Giblets are in custody and can still be questioned.

From the bridge, helmsman En. Brandon Marks reports to Capt. Nobatu that a Valdore-class Romulan warbird has just de-cloaked off the U.S.S. Rotha's port bow....

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/schematics/valdore-screen.jpgBeruk and Geoff, we missed you this past weekend, but I hope that everyone else enjoyed this "episode!" I'm sure we'll return to this at some point, so please post your characters to the "Vortex" site on Obsidian Portal, where I'll also post my background notes. Let me know if you have any questions. >>[26 March 2014:] Fellow role-players as we begin switching gears from Jason's "Glassworks: the Devil's Den" back to the "Vanished Lands," here are some notes regarding advancement.

>>"Vistel's Expedition" will reach Level 8 at our next face-to-face game -- Session 35 on Monday, 31 March 2014, at Rich's place in Waltham, Mass. That's because your Player Characters started at Lvl. 1, plus 7 levels' worth of sessions, plus a bonus level for converting from the Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game to my D20/FATE house rules.

>>The adventurers in the "A New Dawn" telecom group will reach Level 5 as of Session 15 this coming Sunday, March 30. Again, they started at Lvl. 1, have played through 3 levels of sessions, plus a bonus level for updates. We're still using AD&D2 Oriental Adventures.

>>Also, I'm including the current level equivalents for the "Holy Steel" team and our recent "Star Trek: Restoration" one-shot!

>>Attributes (Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha; plus one point every four levels or 20 sessions):

-"Vistel's Expedition" (Lvl. 8): +2-"A New Dawn" (Lvl. 5): +1-"Holy Steel" (Lvl. 17): +4-"Restoration" (Lvl. 3): +0

-Score -- Penalty/Bonus1-3: -34-5: -2

6-8: -19-11: 012-14: +115-17: +218-20: +321-23: +4

>>Aspects (as per FATE; started with 5 -- Origin/Race, Occupation/Class, Trouble/Foibles, Guest Star, Motivation/Alignment; plus one every four levels or 20 sessions):

-"Vistel's Expedition" (Lvl. 8): +2-"A New Dawn" (Lvl. 5): +1-"Holy Steel" (Lvl. 17): +4-"Restoration" (Lvl. 3): +0

-Note: If you've already spent more additional points on Attributes vs. Aspect slots or vice versa, that's OK -- the total number is what matters.

>>Hit Points (based on Occupation -- Ftr d10, Clr d8, Rog d6, Wiz d4; start at max, plus a roll per level or every 5 sessions)

>>Base Attack Bonus (on 1d20; plus Brawl/Martial Arts, Melee, and Shooting skills; +1 every 2 levels or 10 sessions):

-"Vistel's Expedition" (Lvl. 8): +4-"A New Dawn" (Lvl. 5): +2-"Holy Steel" (Lvl. 17): +8-"Restoration" (Lvl. 3): +1

>>Skills (on 1d20; started with 10 points, plus 1 point per session or 5 pts./lvl.; ranks can't exceed level):

-"Vistel's Expedition" (Lvl. 8): 10 at Lvl. 1 + 35 sessions + 5 bonus lvl. = 50 ranks total

-"A New Dawn" (Lvl. 5): 10 + 20 = 30 total-"Holy Steel" (Lvl. 17): 10 + 80 = 90 total-"Restoration" (Lvl. 3): 10 + 10 = 20

-Notes: Martial Arts ranks equals number of available maneuvers. Mysteries ranks plus Spellcasting stunt slots squared equals castable levels of spells per day.

>>Refresh/stunts (race/class abilities, skill specializations/feats, signature items, etc.; started with 6 Fate points, plus one every 10 sessions or 2 levels):

-"Vistel's Expedition" (Lvl. 8): 6 + 4 = 10 total-"A New Dawn" (Lvl. 5): 6 + 2 = 8 total-"Holy Steel" (Lvl. 17): 6 + 8 = 14 total-"Restoration" (Lvl. 3): 6 + 1 = 7 total

-Notes: One Spellcasting slot for every two levels of castable D20 spells; see also Mysteries skill. Save DC = 10 + spell level + 1/2 P.C. level.

>>I know this seems like a lot to do, but it should still be simpler than past systems, especially as you reach midlevel and higher. Let me know if you have any questions as you update your records on Obsidian Portal.

>>If any of you decide to write up your "Star Trek: Restoration" crew, please put them on the "Vortex" Obsidian Portal site. Let me know if you have any other questions, -Gene

https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/5625034-recent-sci-fi-and-other-cinema-can-there-be-drama-without-villains

>>As I've said before, while conflict is central to "Star Wars," I'd like "Star Trek" to differentiate itself from most current SF by returning to an optimistic future involving exploration and diplomacy at least as much as battles (not that I'd mind seeing some well-done Klingons or Romulans in the rebooted universe).

>>A few of us have agreed that the "Trek" franchise would also be better served by the more serial and longer-term storytelling format of TV than by movies filled (partly by necessity) with set-piece action scenes and apocalyptic threats.... I'd like to see a professional, well-adjusted crew and surrogate family develop over time, albeit with

occasional personality conflicts and challenges. Live long and prosper! -Gene

>>I've been enjoying these recent fan films (see also "Phase 2") more than the J.J. Abrams reboot.... http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?352667-Star-Trek-Continues-Episode-2-Lolani-%28-that-Orion-Slave-Girl%29&p=6259309#post6259309

>Erin Grey! Lou Ferrigno! Not to mention a socially-relevant theme. While not polished actors, these guys grok Star Trek. -Jason E.R.

>I liked the Orion Slave Girl episode. I took a look at Farragut and phase II. "Continues" seems to have better production values and story line. Though the Phase II planet killer episode was fun too -- if a bit strained. -Erik

>>LOL and LLAP.... http://io9.com/what-your-favorite-star-trek-says-about-you-1540634145

>Ha Ha Ha. Mine is DS9... And it's sadly somewhat accurate. (At least the first sentence is!) -Rich C.G.

>>Not surprisingly, the Next Gen, Next Gen movies, and animated series descriptions fit me best...

>>While I've found the Abrams flicks entertaining, I agree with many of these points (part of why I'm in the early stages of planning a Trek RPG one-shot).... LLAP http://whatculture.com/film/10-ways-star-trek-just-isnt-star-trek-anymore.php

>I'm not a huge fan of what Abrams has done, and I do agree with some of this list, but some of the items... well... I do think the author is overstating his case a bit, and ignoring or glossing over instances of TOS (TV series and movies both) committing some of the same sins. -Jim

>Gene, these are all valid points. Of course, I still go to see the films. Maybe I should stop watching anything from the reboot.

>At least Galactica stayed somewhat true to its origins, while going darker. -Stephen M.R.

>I've been a regular subscriber to "Star Trek Ongoing" (IDW), and so, I'm already looking forward to http://www.startrek.com/article/first-look-the-q-gambit. -Dave

>I'm enjoying this comic (http://observationdeck.io9.com/the-j-j-verse-needs-to-die-1566263600), but if you read that article, you'll see that some aren't :-)

>I thought the Enterprise has the capacity to become self-aware? http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Emergence_(episode) -Dave

>On the other hand, artificial intelligence and symbiotic relationships with starships weren't supposed to be common until late in the "Next Generation" time frame. Unlike other SF, "Trek" was very advanced in certain technologies, such as faster-than-light propulsion, and less so in others, such as cybernetics and robotics, partly rationalized as a reaction to the Eugenics Wars.

>>Having a cyborg/ship character during the time of Chris Pine's Kirk can not only be considered anachronistic within most Trek continuity, but it also copies and preempts beloved characters like Data or "Voyager's" Doctor.

>>By making "Trek" more like "Andromeda," "Farscape," and other recent SFTV, some fans may feel that the franchise is losing its

distinctive style and becoming a follower rather than a leader. Since the comics aren't necessarily canon (even in the new universe), I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it. Live long and prosper, -Gene

>Transwarp beaming and Eugenics blood certainly do run the risk of mucking with continuity: http://youtu.be/4N15J4ibej8?t=1m4s

>On the bright side, I'm looking forward to the upcoming comic book in which Abrams' crew meets... Q! -Ken G.

http://www.startrek.com/article/first-look-the-q-gambit

>>Shouldn't they just use Trelane or other god-like entities encountered by the original Enterprise crew? Dave, who has been collecting the recent Trek comics, can tell us if this has already happened in the proximity of the J.J. Abrams continuity.

>>As with recent crossovers with "Doctor Who," as much as I appreciate recognizable characters as a fan, I'd also like to see the rebooted Trek universe eventually skew closer to its predecessor (partly because I nominate Tom Hiddleston as the next Data).... -Gene

>The issue, to me, is that Abrams has very deliberately made Trek a LOT less "Trek-like" (remember the articles that discussed this last year when "Into Darkness" came out, about how they removed as much of the Trekiness as possible to improve the film's chances in the international box office?)

>Abrams isn't a Trek fan in the first place; he's said as much (he's much more of a Star Wars fan, which -- hopefully -- means his sensibilities will work better with that universe). And he's a big action guy, which isn't really what Trek is about. -Jim

>>I agree, Jim. This is why I recently ran a "Trek" one-shot RPG via Skype in my own version of continuity. As with "Star Wars" (let's hope the Force is with Abrams and company) the tone of each universe is more important than the pyrotechnics.... -Gene

>Comics: No god-like entities so far -- on the whole, they either revisit a classic episode or give interstitial scenes between (or in backstory) for the movies -- I've really enjoyed the new comics series, -Dave

>Are either of you going to the con this year? https://www.creationent.com/cal/stma.htm

>I'm pleasantly surprised how different the lineup is this year from last. They have DS9, VOY, ENT, and reboot movie actors, almost none of which were there last year, when TNG + TOS took the spotlight. -Ken G.

>Apparently Groupon has tickets for this, so it works out to about $12/person? -Rich C.G.

>>Ken, that is indeed a pretty strong lineup. If that Groupon offer is still valid, I'm definitely thinking of going to this one! Live long and prosper, -Gene

>>Rich and fellow role-players, thanks for the heads-up on PDF deals for Tabletop RPG Day. While Free RPG Day is a ways out, I would be interested in meeting people at the Compleat Strategist in Boston on Saturday, 21 June 2014. It's also not difficult to get from the Strat to Pandemonium Books & Games in Cambridge. http://www.freerpgday.com/

>>Note that the second annual Creation "Star Trek" Convention in Boston, the Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party, and the Mutton & Mead Festival in Montague, Mass., are also that weekend. So much to do, so little time (and money)! We should definitely begin marking our calendars....

>>In the meantime, I look forward to seeing some of you for this coming Sunday's "Vanished Lands: A New Dawn" telecom fantasy game or at Brian W.'s on Monday for Jason's "Glassworks: the Devil's Den." Have a good weekend, -Gene

>>Rich and friends, I am aware of the Groupon for admission to this year's Creation "Star Trek" convention in Boston, but I'm waiting to see

>However, this page is blank for me: https://www.creationent.com/tickets.htm -Ken

>>That's too bad. There may have been a limited number of Groupon admissions.

>>We'll just have to keep an eye out for regular tickets to become available. -Gene

>Gene, I still can't get the Star Trek con's tickets page to load, but I found this alternative: http://www.creationent.com/iwwida.pvx?;products_no_tree?cat=CONVENTION?comp=CET

>Note that the gold admission requires attendance on both days to get everyone's autograph: if you go Saturday only, you'll miss Sisko. :( Are you going? -Ken

https://www.creationent.com/cal/stma.htm

>>Thanks, Dave. Ken, it now looks like regular ticket options are available. Looking forward to it! -Gene

>And it looks like they're selling out quickly! I'm likely going for Silver -- it's the same as Gold, but without Avery Brooks, who's Sunday only.

>>Thanks for the heads-up, Ken. The weekend pass is decent at $40, but I'll have to think about autographs or photo ops. Of those attending, I'm most interested in Scott Bakula.... -Gene

>I bought a silver ticket for the Star Trek con and will be there Saturday, but not Sunday. Hope to see you there! -Ken

>>Ken and friends, I've purchased a general admission ticket via Groupon to the Star Trek con at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston for Sunday, 22 June 2014. That's when Brooks, Bakula, and Urban will be there.

Previously, in "Star Trek: Restoration," the U.S.S. Rotha was assigned to bring representatives of the Klingon Empire home through the Neutral Zone. However, several crew members were murdered, and junior officers were forced to subdue a Gorn and an Orion. In addition, the officers uncovered an Undine disguised with a holo-emitter.

Kalifa notes that Romulan cloaking technology has continued to advance in reaction to Federation sensors, but he believes he can compensate when acquiring targets for photon torpedoes.

The meeting is interrupted when another vessel drops out of warp. A small Ferengi trader hails the assembled ships. DaiMon Froot quickly assesses the standoff and offers the Love's Latinum Lost as a neutral meeting place for negotiations.

http://johneaves.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/ferengi-vessel-small.jpg

Despite the Ferengi's insulting tone, Capt. Nobatu and Subcommander Vurik agree to send representatives. On the way to a transporter room, Lt. Kyerak stops by the "Starlight Lounge" to pick up some Andorian ale from Bolian bartender Mr. Vallcin. Lt. Kalifa asks holographic chief medical officer "Dr. Jones" for autopsy results on the Undine.

DaiMon Froot offers beetle snuff to Kyerak upon his arrival and introduces his colleague, Kimbal Tegan, a laid-back Trill. Kalifa is skeptical of the newcomers' claim that they just happened to be passing through the Neutral Zone.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Neutral_zoneSubcommander Miral Gaius and Lt. Koval Solius beam over from the Romulan warbirds. They claim that the U.F.P. has been working with Klingon spies to further undermine the Rihannsu Empire.

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/schematics/valdore-screen.jpgFroot notes that according to the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition, "Peace is good for business, but war is even better." Still, he manages to keep the Starfleet and Romulan delegates from coming to blows.

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Ferengi_Rules_of_AcquisitionMr. Kyerak manages to shrug off Lt. Solius' insults about his half-Vulcan heritage and explains that the Rotha was indeed bringing passengers to Q'onos, but an incident with a would-be assassin led to the Orion and Gorn being wounded and placed in protective custody.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/sto.gamepedia.com/thumb/f/f0/Orion_Male_Engineering_Officer_Candidate.png/260px-Orion_Male_Engineering_Officer_Candidate.png

Subcommander Gaius offers to escort the Federation starship through the Neutral Zone. Confident Lt. Kalifa begins devising a plan to distract and outmaneuver the grim Romulans. Tegan notes that traveling together presents opportunities for all.

http://starbaseugc.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/romulans.jpgCapt. Nobatu and Subcommander Vurik cautiously concur, and the four ships head toward Klingon space. Froot gives Kyerak and Kalifa a Tribble, and Tegan celebrates and irritates by hacking into subspace channels and broadcasting old Earth music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofI96eRgQfY&list=RDofI96eRgQfY#t=0

Back on the Rotha, Lt. Kalifa gives the Tribble to Lt. K'dex to put into stasis. Lt. Kyerak asks Cmdr. Wahid and chief of security Pierre McDonnough for permission to interrogate the prisoners, but they warn him to avoid unnecessary force.

http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080323012542/memoryalpha/en/images/4/43/Unnamed_Enterprise-E_Security_8,_First_Contact.jpg

Kyerak brings Lt. Artemis Borellis, a Betazed counselor, to the brig. He and Orzzek question green-skinned D'naar and reptilian Hands of Giblets separately. The Orion pirate claims ignorance and is not intimidated by the Starfleet officers.

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090913064951/ussswiftfire/images/3/3b/Gloria01.jpg

The Gorn, however, admits that the Klingons and Romulans have been working together on a stealth weapon, possibly the Undine itself. Lt. Borellis observes that it's possible the delegation included the Undine as a spy without the full awareness of even the Klingons.

http://pearlsofgeekdom.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/hands-cgi-gorn.jpg

The officers report to the captain, who agrees that driving a wedge between the two Federation foes is better than allowing them to collaborate with the Undine. Lt. Kalifa asks Froot if it would be possible for the Love's Latinum Lost to broadcast an Undine bio signal to the Klingons and say that the Romulans have somehow lost control of their mission.

There is an awkward moment when Cmdr. Wahid recognizes fellow Trill Tegan from a past life. After some discussion, the Ferengi trader and Starfleet crew devise another plan. As they and the Romulans approach Camp Khitomer, Vor'cha-class battle cruisers decloak.

http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/Grandadmiralroach/Vorcha.jpg

Capt. Nobatu tells Cmdr. Korral that a routine scan detected the Undine, who was then killed. She tells the Klingon commander that D'naar and Hands of Giblets had sent a message to unknown recipients before they were incarcerated.

DaiMon Froot jumps in to say that the Love's Latinum Lost intercepted a message between the Romulans and the Cardassian Union. Already incensed over the failure of the diplomatic mission, Korral berates Subcommander Vurik for the perceived betrayal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4jCo0-jy0MThe Klingon cruisers begin firing on the Romulan ships, and the Rotha takes advantage of the skirmish to make evasive maneuvers and head back toward Federation space. It takes only light damage. Engineer Lt.Cmdr. Akira Gorou extends the refitted Ambassador-class Rotha's warp bubble to bring the Love's Latinum Lost along.

gamma/images/7/79/Ambassador2.pngAt Starbase 24, Capt. Nobatu recommends the Love's Latinum Lost for upgrades. Froot thanks the captain, who he says "is not bad for a hooman female." Kimbal avoids Nasami, and Orzzek makes sure that the Orion and Gorn prisoners are safely transferred.

Cmdr. Wahid meets privately with Lt. Kyerak. She offers him a covert mission to a lost Federation colony. The planet has devolved technologically, and according to the Prime Directive,

its inhabitants must be left alone until proper First Contact is made.

However, Nasami says, other interstellar states have no such reluctance about exploiting more primitive worlds. She asks Kyerak to take a small squad undercover to find and "eliminate" any outside interference. The executive officer gives him a day to consider.

In the Rotha's Starlight Lounge, Kyerak asks Kalifa, Froot, and Kimbal to join him. Kalifa agrees with the necessity of the mission but is uncomfortable with the idea of terminating any opposition and not talking with the captain.

Froot readily agrees to help bring the team to the nonaligned system as an itinerant merchant. Kimbal, who recalls a past life as a Starfleet officer, is surprised at the covert and potentially lethal nature of the mission. He agrees to come along to keep an eye on rogue Federation factions.

Kyerak tells Cmdr. Wahid that he accepts and that he hopes for a promotion. The U.F.P. agents and neutral traders begin preparing aliases and gear....

"Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Kyerak" [Bruce K.]-half-Vulcan with a temper, in the U.S.S. Rotha's command division

"Lt. Orzzek Kalifa" [Byron V.O.]-male Andorian (blue-skinned humanoid with white hair and antennae), assertive science officer

"Froot" [Rich C.G.]-male Ferengi (short, large-eared extraterrestrial) merchant and negotiator, DaiMon and owner of the trade vessel Love's Latinum Lost

"Lt. Mari Killu" [Sara F.]-female Caitian (felinoid) security/tactical officer

"Lt. Boran' Gorir" [Josh C.]-male Jem'Hadar (bio-engineered Dominion soldier), aggressive envoy/engineer

"Kimbal Tegan" [Beruk A./absent?]-male Trill (long-lived symbiont), operations specialist aboard the Love's Latinum Lost

"Lt. Jarric Jameson" [Dexter V.H./absent]-male genetically modified human colonist (former Maquis) communications and wilderness survival expert

>>We don't have a medic, and with Beruk and Dexter absent, we could also use a pilot, communications specialist/counselor/diplomat, or scout/Rogue.

>>I hope we'll be able to decide in the next two nights for sure whether we'll be playing "Star Trek: Restoration" or "Vanished Lands: Vistel's Expedition." I look forward to seeing everyone! -Gene

>Hey Gene, that Ambassador-class starship video was awesome! Totally got me psyched to play Star Trek again! Talk to you tonight. -Bruce

>>Bruce, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've been giving some thought to "Episode 3" of "Star Trek: Restoration," as well as some "Vortex," superhero, and D&D5e scenarios. We'll definitely get back to the crew of the U.S.S. Rotha for its infiltration mission on a lost Federation colony....

>>In the meantime, I look forward to seeing you and the gang at upcoming "Vanished Lands" and "Tunnel Vision" sessions! -Gene

>>P.S.: Janice and I saw William Shatner, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, and Walter Koenig at last weekend's Rhode Island Comic Con, and we also watched an excellent fan-made episode:

>Off-topic, when we play Star Trek, that should totally be your character's catchphrase. -Beruk A.

>Ha Ha Ha! There would be precedent... Wallace Shawn played both Grand Nagus Zek AND Vizzini the Sicilian from the Princess Bride... -Rich

>Really? I had absolutely no idea. What is this Princess Bride you speak of? I would not know of this movie being a fanboy who plays Dungeons and Dragons. :) -Beruk A.

-"Tau" [Drew S.]-male Ferengi, medic aboard the Love's Latinum Lost

>Hi Gene, I just had a few questions. What is the cap for skills? Your level? So 3?

>Equipment: How should I handle equipment? In particular medical equipment, but other more mundane things too, like weapons, latinum, etc.

>Should I treat my character as a cleric with spells re-skinned as technology? (i.e. Spell slots are hypospray canisters) Or should my medical gear count as tools, simply providing me a bonus to a normal medicine check?

>Stunts: I'm unsure about what to take for stunts. Should medical equipment be stunts? So far the only stunt I that comes to mind is the Ferengi resistance to disease, also useful for a doctor. Thanks, -Drew

>>Good questions, Drew! Yes, you can spend up to 3 points on any given skill; remember class/division requirements and that ability bonuses, BAB, and certain stunts stack.

>>Here are some example stunts that might be helpful (I'm cc:'ing Byron, who played "Dr. Srinu Pahul" back in "Vortex"):

-Citizen of the galaxy/Cosmopolitan: +3 on Streetwise/Gather Information

-Insider: +3 to Diplomacy when dealing with any bureaucracy-Miracle worker: Can do any complex task (surgery, repairing a

device) in half the normal time-Old spacer: +2 on Science/computers and Vehicles-Panimmunity: +3 on any Endurance/Fortitude checks against disease-Skeptic: +3 to Perception/Sense Motive vs. opponent's Deception roll

(possibly also Gaming/gambling)-Surgeon: +3 to Medicine, or +2 plus Int or Dex bonus (instead of

Wis, whichever is better) when performing surgery (see kit below)

-Triage: Can assess beings within 20 feet in need of medical care as a move action, determining if they are wounded, staggered, or stunned; DC is 10 + number of beings

-Universal Gadget: With the pharmaceutical kit (see below) and a Fate point, can create one miracle drug per episode/session

-Xenobiologist: Reduce penalty for treating unfamiliar species from -4 to -2

>>Here's what I found in my D20 Prime Directive and other Star Trek RPG books for medical equipment. Remember that you won't have access to a full sickbay in the field.

-Medical kit: With this, can restore 1d4 Hit Points per round, once per character per day, DC 15; can also treat disease, poison, stun conditions

-Medical Tricorder: +3 to all diagnoses, about the size of an early 21st century smartphone

-Pharmaceutical kit: Allows use of Craft (drugs) in the field, thanks to miniaturized biochemical synthesizers; a simple one would grant 1d6 temporary HP for the duration of an encounter

-Surgery kit: In 1d4 hours, can use to restore 1d6 HP per surgeon's level, DC 20 and depends on condition or injury

>>All of these kits can fit in a large backpack. I hope this helps! -Gene

>Yes, that is very helpful. Thank you very much!>Should I pay stunt slots for the medical equipment, since they

basically function as abilities? Or just say that I have it? DO you have any kind of system for how much stuff we are allowed to have? -Drew

>Hey Gene, I might have some tweaking to do, but here's more or less my character. Let me know what you think. Thanks, -Drew

>>Drew and fellow role-players, it was good to see some of you online for Dexter V.H.'s D&D5e "Land of Lost Souls" miniseries last night. I'll try to post my notes later this week.

>>I hope that those of you who are off from work today are enjoying your Presidents' Day at home. I regretted heading into the office this morning (partly to give notice) almost from the moment I left my apartment. My car had difficulty starting in the cold, I barely got up the hill out of the parking lot, and the side streets in Waltham and Newton were still pretty slippery. I'm also expecting to shovel snow yet again tomorrow.

>>I'm sure the highways and your complex in Needham will be clear tonight, but I'm still inclined to run the "Star Trek: Restoration" session virtually. It's a long way home for Beruk and Sara, and Dexter and Byron are interested in participating remotely. What do you think?

>>Sorry, Rich -- I've looked forward to "DaiMon Froot's" involvement in the party's infiltration mission! Would you be able to join us via Skype?

>>For now, let's plan to meet online tonight from about 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Live long and prosper! -Gene

>Skype's not really feasible for me. :( But it makes sense not to risk everyone's safety if not needed. -Rich C.G.

>>Rich, we'll miss you at tonight's "Star Trek: Restoration" telecom session! It has been too long since we've all been able to meet for a face-to-face game, but I hope that we'll be able to do so for Jason's "Channel 37" in the coming weeks! -Gene

>If the problem for you, Gene, is getting to and from your apartment, I would volunteer to take you from your apartment to Drew's and back. I could also pick up Beruk from the train station near Drew's house and drop off Beruk off at the T station at the end of the night. I would also pick up Rich.

>I could take my pickup truck that seats six and has 4-wheel drive and goes anywhere. Just offering it as an option.

>Maybe we could set up Skype at Drew's as an option for others. Or we can just do Skype for everyone -- which I do not enjoy nearly as much. -Bruce K.

>>Thanks for the offer, Bruce, and I sympathize regarding face-to-face vs. telecom sessions. In the interests of time and not forcing you to drive all over, it's better if we stick to the plan rather than change it at the last minute, especially since we haven't heard back from much of the group.

>>That said, if you and Rich want to meet up, and if Drew is set up for Skype and willing to host at least part of the group, we could have more folks online for the game! -Gene

>You may already know about this.... http://disruptorbeam.com/blog/entry/disruptor-beam-is-coming-to-pax-east

>Thanks, Gene! I'm on their e-mail list. In fact, I even applied there for a job this week — but it seems they hired a candidate with 24 hours of posting. :p -Ken G.

>>I'm not surprised that the latest Star Trek game got lots of job applicants, but you never know! That reminds me, I need to post my notes for my latest "Star Trek: Restoration" tabletop RPG session.... -Gene

Lt. Kyerak and Kimbal Tegan conduct research on the Aldebaran colony. Alpha Tauri III is the third out of four planets orbiting an orange giant and a red dwarf and is the only Class M (inhabitable) one in that solar system.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Aldebaranhttp://www.solstation.com/stars2/aldebaran.htm

Alpha Tauri III is slightly larger than Earth, with a 1.2 Gs of gravity, a 27-hour day, and six small moons. Its 1 million sentient natives joined the United Federation of Planets in 2216, and thanks in part to the New Aberdeen Shipyards, its mostly human population grew to 7 billion over the next century.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Aldebaron_colonyHowever, in 2372 (about 50 Terran years ago), Starfleet was forced to abandon the colony as part of the settlement ending the Cardassian War. It has apparently regressed to a pre-warp level of technology, and interstellar trade has been sporadic and indirect.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Federation-Cardassian_WarDaiMon Froot sets course for Aldebaran, bypassing Deep Space K-7 because of the covert nature of Lt. Kyerak's mission. Tau, a Ferengi medic, introduces himself to the passengers.

Lt. Jarric Jameson and Lt. Orzzek Kalifa express misgivings about the fact that Lt. Kyerak had accepted the mission to "terminate any offworld interference" in Aldebaran from Cmdr. Nasami Wahid, first officer of the Rotha.

http://startrekakagi.com/application/assets/images/characters/rylan5.jpg

Although Starfleet's Prime Directive prohibits direct contact with pre-warp societies, Lt. Mari Killu and Lt. Boran' Gorir are more concerned about threats to Aldebaran's civilian population and potential U.F.P. membership.

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Prime_Directivehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldebaran_in_fiction

Kimbal puts the Love's Latinum Lost in a standard orbit around Alpha Tauri III and sees the remnants of orbital platforms. The Trill pilot also scans for subspace signals and finds three transmission sites: a science station at Nar Instel, the industrial city of Irdrant, and the agricultural community of Folkhar.

http://www.coldnorth.com/owen/game/startrek/universe/source/planets/mapofaldebaran.jpg

Kyerak checks radio telecommunications and verifies that the colony has fragmented into rival nation-states. The half-Vulcan officer recommends visiting Nar Instel first.

http://www.ufstarfleet.org/wiki/images/f/fb/Pinastri.JPGTau's biological scans find nearly 6 billion inhabitants, most of whom are human. The decline in global population may be the result of emigration offworld, the decline in technology, epidemics, or wars, theorizes the Ferengi doctor.

Froot says that Aldebaran was once known for its ores (used in starship construction), native life forms, and whiskey. It was also once a venue for medical conferences. He suggests that the away team offer goods and non-critical scientific data in return for local products and information.

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Aldebaran_IIIThe Love's Latinum Lost lands near Nar Instel. Kimbal hacks into local computer networks and identifies staffers to talk to. Kyerak changes into civilian garb, and Tao offers to handle trade negotiations as their cover story.

http://ds9.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/5x13/fortheuniform057.jpgKimbal wanders around the science station until he finds a canteen. He meets "Two-Three" and "Three-Two," two Binar engineers. They are not interested in carousing, but Kimbal uses their literal-mindedness to obtain a network schematic.

https://johnkennethmuir.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/binar5.jpghttp://www.foxx-industries.com/2300ad/comp.gif

Meanwhile, Kyerak goes to the headquarters of the academy and introduces himself as a researcher to a pretty receptionist. He hears an argument and watches Yusuf Darwhish, a human climatologist, storm out of the director's office.

Tau gets directions to the bursar and offers to trade exotic foodstuffs with a Vulcan scientist who initially dismisses him. However, Stuvek expresses interest in advanced tools, so he accepts Tau's offer and arranges to meet again later.

http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/sto.gamepedia.com/thumb/a/a2/Vulcan_Male.jpg/250px-Vulcan_Male.jpg?version=895c8e6fa91f5fcc820dc1d1133546be

Kyerak meets Huang Peipei, director of Nar Instel. He mentions Johann Strom, onetime head of the New Aberdeen Shipyards,

and the physicist says that she would like her people to eventually reunite with other Aldebaranians and the Federation. Flirtatious Kyerak says that he can help.

http://www.trektoday.com/content/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/TMar.jpg

http://blog.wilcoxfamily.net/photos/doug.jpgSly Kimbal eventually excuses himself from conversation with the Binars and sends Kyerak a signal to meet. Curious Tau follows Stuvek into a biology laboratory. He is horrified to see cruel animal testing and notices a decapod acting suspiciously.

http://supadu.com/images/ckfinder/262/images/Fun%20stuff/Decadren.jpg

The Ferengi ducks into the room and talks with the native Tauran. Gopal Thivar admits that he is trying to sabotage the tests and that he can telepathically tell that Stuvek is hiding something bad.

A three-headed, floating Aldebaranian serpent attacks Tau and Gopal, and they run down the hall. However, Stuvek corners them and says that it's too bad that they will be the "victims of a lab accident."

http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120820020155/memoryalpha/en/images/thumb/4/41/Aldebaran_serpent.jpg/500px-Aldebaran_serpent.jpg

When the duo tries to run around Stuvek, he pulls out a Romulan disruptor and slowly disintegrates the unlucky decapod! Tau slides past Stuvek and makes a desperate dash for the door.

http://www.screenused.com/images/tng/8632_1.jpgKyerak and Kimbal, who had been trying to reach Tau, burst into the hallway. Kyerak stuns the Romulan, and Kimbal misses the serpent. Tau keeps running until he finds local security forces outside.

The police take Stuvek into custody, and Kyerak privately tells Huang that he hopes to remove external disruptions so that she can help her world advance politically. Kimbal takes the disruptor's power cell, and Tau explains how he and Gopal had uncovered inhumane research.

Kyerak interrogates the supposed Vulcan, as Huang and guards watch. Stuvek admits that his true name is Vorlag. The spy boldly admits that he planned to train colonial doctors in the mind-set and methods of the Tal Shiar, the Romulan intelligence service.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Tal_ShiarVorlag's initial mission was to evaluate the system for conquest, but he says he felt free to pursue his own experiments. The Romulan then bites down on a poisoned capsule, and Tau is unable to save him without a modern medical bay.

Kimbal checks Vorlag's quarters and finds a subspace transmitter. The landing party returns to the ship, ready to search for whoever is sending subspace signals from Irdrant and Folkhar. To be continued....

While we missed much of the group, I hope that those of you who were able to participate enjoyed our latest episode! >>[23 February 2015:] Fellow role-players, by popular demand, here is an updated Player Character template for our D20/FATE "Star Trek: Restoration" space opera scenario. It more closely matches what we've been using for the "Vanished Lands: A New Dawn" and "Vistel's Expedition" parties for the past six months or so.

>>Note that Brawl, Melee, and Shooting are gone, and the skill list has been tightened somewhat, so you'll need to redistribute ranks. I've also revised Base Attack Bonus, Psionics, and technical skills.

>>The first few pages of the enclosed MS Word document are printer-friendly (I've also made hardcopies), and the last few are formatted for Obsidian Portal. Use the "Vortex" site if you'd like to upload your P.C.s, and I can help if needed. https://vortex.obsidianportal.com/characters/d20-fate-star-trek-restoration-p-c-template

>>I look forward to continuing this sometime, and live long and prosper! -Gene

>What's the plan for next Monday, Feb. 23, 2015? It's not supposed to snow for once. -Brian S.

>The entrance to the basement is cleared, and I'm ready to host. Hoping Jason is game to pick up the back where we left off. -Brian W.

>>I haven't heard from Jason either whether we'll be playing his "Channel 37" game tomorrow, Monday, 23 February 2015. He may still be on his way back from vacation.

>>Brian W., I'm glad that your driveway and basement are clear, and I hope the streets don't ice over tonight. Do we have a backup plan if Jason isn't available? -Gene

>I'm down for "Star Trek" or the "Vanished Lands." Or I can bring some systems for a 1-shot. Whatever people want to do. -Rich C.G.

>>Thanks, Rich. For now, let's plan on meeting at Brian W.'s place in Newton, Mass., tonight (Monday, 23 February 2015).

>>I've packed my "Star Trek: Restoration" stuff in addition to notes for Jason's "Channel 37" game. While I hope that he'll be able to run, it might be a good idea for others to be ready for a one-shot.

>>I don't have my "Vanished Lands: Vistel's Expedition" references, and since Brian W. and Brian S. aren't in the "Star Trek" team, and Drew may be out sick, I'm open to suggestion. Brian, might you be prepared to run something?

>>In the meantime, keep an eye on this Yahoo message board, and I'll see you later, -Gene

>If Jason is able to run the next session of Channel 37, I'll definitely be there. If not, there's another event I'd like to go to tonight, so you don't need to account for me when you consider what to run. -Brian S.

>I have something prepped and ready to go barring other alternatives. That said, I'm OK with Star Trek (just give me a "red shirt;" I'm sure I'll fit right in). But my first hope is that Jason will be available and we can resume the long-delayed next session of Channel 37! -Brian W.

>Hey everyone -- arrived late last night from vacation. Unfortunately, with getting back to work today and home stuff, I am not prepared to run or even game tonight. I will talk to everyone soon, and happy gaming whatever you end up doing. -Jason

>So we are all confirmed for Brian's place, and I will cast my vote for "Star Trek." I think a change in venue at this point would be a little late, unless someone says otherwise by 2:00 p.m.? -Beruk A.

>Brian's for "Star Trek" sounds great. -Bruce K.

>Ditto here. I'm excited for it. -Rich C.G.

>Important note about parking: Hi all, the city of Newton a month back instituted a parking restriction, only on the even numbered side of the

street... that's the opposite side of the street from my house. I don't know if it's still in effect, but given how narrow the roads are, please park only on the even numbered side of the street so cars can get by. Thank you! -Brian W.

The explorers still have to find the remaining two sources of subspace transmissions in the former U.F.P. colony, which has regressed to a pre-warp level of technology. They had tracked the signals to the industrial city of Irdrant and the agricultural community of Folkhar.

Lt. Kyerak decides that the landing party should visit Irdrant next. Chief Ravi Chandler notes that his upbringing in the

militaristic Altair system should be helpful in dealing with this nation-state of Aldebaran.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Altair_systemDaiMon Froot notes that the team will have to teleport from the Love's Latinum Lost because defense forces would spot a landing starship. Kimbal Tegan scans the city and narrows the transmission site to a single neighborhood.

Kyerak wants to negotiate with local authorities to find whoever is sending the subspace signals in violation of Starfleet's non-interference Prime Directive, as he did in Nar Instel. Froot argues in favor of backup false identities as police officers.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Prime_DirectiveRavi changes out of his uniform, and Kimbal tunes into local radio stations. The other crew members from the U.S.S. Rotha stay with the Love's Latinum Lost as the foursome beams down to an alley on the surface.

Shadow-Blu-ray-1.jpgVulcan Kyerak and human Ravi head toward "Nel's Diner," while Ferengi Froot and Trill Kimbal walk around the block and spot a military security post before entering the eatery.

http://vrc.lstechsupport.com/images/bizgal/q4d8b4e44n.jpgKyerak observes that most of the diner's patrons are human, except for Illiana Drah'el, a Cardassian administrative assistant. Muscular Ravi impresses Bajoran waitress Kala Voshen and other women.

Kala: https://rindastartrekds9.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/12.jpgFroot watches as a well-dressed human executive arrives from the radio station across the street. Both Illiana and Kala defer to Sarlic Pramantha. Ravi listens to Sarlic confidently predict Irdrant's inevitable victory over Folkhar.

Sarlic: http://btpics.com/images/cjAiH.pngEntrepreneur Froot offers some jewelry to Illiana, who asks for a gold and platinum earring. Half-human Kyerak doesn't trust the Cardassian either, and he and wary Kimbal pose as potential advertisers to Pramantha, who agrees to meet the next day.

Illiana: http://www.themakeupgallery.info/images/fantasy/alien/st/card/natima4.jpg

The four offworlders get rooms at the Sentinel Hotel. Kimbal examines local radio waves and finds that Irdrant's armed forces are secretly sending messages encoded within commercial and propaganda broadcasts.

http://img2.10bestmedia.com/Images/Photos/251700/governor-hotel_54_990x660_201406012221.jpg

Kyerak uses a tricorder to search for Cardassian signals but finds that the subspace emissions match U.F.P. frequencies instead. Froot gives Ravi an item that Illiana touched, but her DNA isn't in Starfleet's records.

http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/1/13/Starfleet_Tricorder_2379.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120419181343&path-prefix=en

Froot beams up to the Love's Latinum Lost to replicate the jewelry that the secretary requested and to plant a bug in it. Ravi confirms that the subspace transmitter must be hidden in Irdrant Tower, the same skyscraper that hosts the radio station.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8a/Columbus-ohio-leveque-tower.jpg

Kyerak visits a library to research recent history and people who might be offworlders interfering with the former colony. Kimbal and Froot are skeptical that the Starfleet personnel will be able to uphold the Prime Directive between their mission and native Aldebaranian politics.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Aldebaron_colonyhttp://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Aldebaran_III

The next morning, the team visits Nel's Diner for breakfast. Froot gives Illiana the earring she requested. Kyerak pretends to be clumsy and bumps into the secretary to briefly scan her telepathically.

The lieutenant learns that she plans to dismantle the jewelry for parts, presumably for the subspace transmitter. Kala avoids the Cardassian, even as the Bajoran waitress tries to flirt with Ravi.

The four explorers leave their weapons and ultra-tech tools at their hotel rooms before going to Irdrant Tower. They are patted down by strict Betazed officer Sgt. Anker Theophilus before taking an elevator to the radio station.

http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k577/Infinity_Admin/Races/betazoidm.jpg

Illiana gives the visitors a brief tour, and Ravi sees no sign of the secret transmitter. Kimbal and Froot make a sponsorship pitch to Pramantha, who seems receptive. He invites them to dinner to close the deal. On the way out of the office, Kyerak asks Illiana to join them.

http://theofficestylist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/madmen01dailyicon.jpg

Pramantha sends a car to pick up the party. Kimbal finds that cabbie Maurice Thibaud is happy to share his opinions on numerous topics. He says that Sarlic is connected to many powerful people in Irdrant.

Lt. Kyerak, Mr. Chandler, Capt. Froot, and Mr. Tegan meet Mr. Pramantha and Ms. Drah'el at an old-fashioned steakhouse. Sarlic introduces them to Maj. Juanita Madeira, a human officer who is curious about the supposed investors.

Froot engages the major in conversation, while Kimbal finds that Illiana is fiercely loyal to Pramantha. Ravi notices that the wait staff is hovering suspiciously around their table, and Kyerak realizes that the Irdrantians mean to capture or kill them.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xeu4Tx9GGtk/StT-aYzc6OI/AAAAAAAABkE/8jpKfZqEk0o/s1600-h/The+Big+Goodbye+1.jpg

The impetuous Vulcan draws his phaser and stuns Pramanatha. Kimbal tries to warn Maj. Madeira, who admits that she gave the order for security forces to move in. Froot stealthily grabs Illiana's purse to prevent her from finding the advanced bug in her jewelry.

Strong Ravi flips over a heavy table as the waiters open fire with slug throwers. Kyerak stuns Illiana, and Kimbal grabs unconscious Sarlic. The Trill tries to explain to Maj. Madeira that the radio executive is the threat to Irdrant, not him.

Froot scrambles over to Kimbal. As more troops arrive, Ravi initiates an emergency beam out to the Love's Latinum Lost. Sarlic and Illiana are put in separate cabins as a makeshift brig, and Ravi takes blood samples.

When the prisoners come to, Lt. Kyerak and DaiMon Froot lead the interrogation. Kimbal moves the ship to a higher orbit to avoid detection by Irdrant, and Ravi and Tau find that Sarlic has antibodies consistent with interstellar travel.

Illiana says that Sarlic "is a great man who will lead Irdrant to dominance" of Alpha Tauri III. The media manipulator admits that he was a Federation sociologist assigned to covertly observe the colonists.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Cultural_observation_postSarlic also confesses that he was helping the military and sending out subspace signals in the hope of finding like-minded people willing to break the Prime Directive. He claims to be unaware of the Romulan spy in Nar Instel.

Froot is sympathetic to the need to reclaim systems before the Klingons, Romulans, or Cardassians, who are also recovering from disasters, can do so. Kyerak is unmoved and intends to turn over the rogue scientist to Starfleet Command.

https://vortex.obsidianportal.com/wikis/star-trek-restoration-notesKimbal and Ravi beam down to Sarlic's office to destroy his transmitter and any trace of advanced technology. They manage to avoid local security forces, and Kyerak begins planning to visit Folkhar, the origin point of the third and final set of subspace signals. To be continued....

>>I heard this at the comic shop on my way home from my last day at TechTarget. Sad news indeed for fans. I knew that Nimoy was in the hospital and that his prognosis wasn't good. But he did live long and prosper... -Gene

>>I'm sure it will. Janice and I enjoyed the Star Wars concert emceed by Anthony Daniels a few years ago. LLAP! -Gene

>We enjoyed that, too. If you gave the DVD set of the original trilogy, there's a bonus disc with several of the videos that they played in the concert, but on the disc, it's all narrated by Ian McDiarmid. Funny how the same dialogue can come across so differently from Emperor Palpatine than from the lips of C-3P0. -Jim

>>Fellow role-players, it was good to see some of you at Jason's "Channel 37" game this past Monday. I've been busy with my new job, so I probably won't have a chance to write up notes for that session.

>>Remember also that Dexter's D&D5e "Land of Lost Souls" telecom miniseries won't be meeting this coming Sunday, 8 March 2015, because it's his birthday, and I'll be getting back from Florida that evening.

>>As for Monday, March 9, what do people want to do? I won't have time to prepare for our "Vanished Lands: Vistel's Expedition" party, but I could continue our "Star Trek: Restoration" scenario if people are interested.

>>However, it would also be a good opportunity for someone to run a one-shot. Any takers? Where we meet will also depend on who's available. Have a good weekend, -Gene

>>Thanks, Bruce. Brian and Drew, what about you? If Brian hosts, we may need more munchies. Note that Sara, Josh, Dexter, and Byron also have characters for our space opera scenario. -Gene

>Star Trek sounds good to me. I'm up for hosting, just let me know what the final decision is. -Drew S.

>I am okay with either Brian's or Drew's place. I will bring some munchies and more drinks. -Bruce K.

>>OK, let's meet at Drew's place in Needham, Mass., tonight (Monday, 9 March 2015). I'll be ready to run "Star Trek: Restoration," but I have no problem waiting if people prefer Bruce's Dread: "Beneath a Metal Sky" one-shot. See you soon! -Gene

>I am good either way with a preference for Star Trek. -Beruk

>I love Star Trek, but I don'[t get to play Dread all that often... Log me in for that! I have the rule set and a Jnega tower if needed, Bruce. -Rich

-"Froot" [Rich C.G.]-male Ferengi (short, large-eared extraterrestrial) merchant and negotiator, DaiMon and owner of the trade vessel Love's Latinum Lost

-"Kimbal Tegan" [Beruk A.]-male Trill (long-lived symbiont), operations specialist aboard the Love's Latinum Lost

-"Lt. Boran' Gorir" [Josh C.]-male Jem-Hadar (bio-engineered Dominion soldier), aggressive envoy/engineer

>>Episode 5: Gift of the FerengiPreviously, in "Star Trek: Restoration," the U.S.S. Rotha uncovered an Undine infiltrator during a diplomatic mission and faced off against Romulan and Klingon ships in the Neutral Zone. Some junior officers then accepted a covert mission to investigate offworld interference in a former member of the United Federation of Planets.

A landing party beams down to the sprawling agricultural community of Folkhar. Most of the Starfleet lieutenants stay behind in orbit on the Love's Latinum Lost to watch prisoners Dr. Sarlic Pramantha and Illiana Drah'el.

Tau offers Ravi a tip, but the human transporter chief declines the Ferengi medic's gold-pressed latinum. DaiMon Froot leads the way into a dusty town, while Kimbal covertly scans for anomalous subspace transmissions. Lt. Kyerak notices that most of the inhabitants are human.

http://www.virtualmatt.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/colony-1024x576.jpg

A blue-skinned Andorian rancher riding a horse draws the newcomers' attention. Lissan th'Zerath isn't interested in Kyerak, Froot, or Tau's overtures, but she directs them to a general store.

farming, and relatively few power tools. The explorers walk by a wainwright's shop, where a Klingon and his son warily watch them while repairing carts.

The infiltrators follow Lissan's directions to Tellarite Bol Kerv Shaloo. Froot happily negotiates with the porcine provisioner, who collects items from the colony's past as an interstellar crossroads. The Ferengi captain trades an inoperative comm badge for a Klingon sash, which he adds to his crown and fancy cane.

http://st-redemption.wdfiles.com/local--files/cp-gurgee/Gurgee.jpgKimbal and Tau conceal tricorders as they look for transmissions that would violate Starfleet's noninterference Prime Directive. Shaloo mentions that he recently traded fine tools to the Klingons, even though they don't need them.

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Prime_DirectiveBack at the wainwright, Tau learns that young Kolad is eager to please customers and his father, Kurgh, son of Kulam. Kyerak and Kimbal talk to the gruff widower, who years to be in contact with other Klingons.

Kurgh: http://www.seykota.com/Tribe/FAQ/2003_July/July_1-5/Klingon.jpg

Kolad: http://konoratheklingon.weebly.com/uploads/6/3/5/0/6350601/1357237009.jpg

Their conversation is cut short when Froot pulls a Tribble from under his robes, getting the outlanders thrown out. The group then walks to the mayor's office. Maria Conchitez says that her people are tired of fighting with Irdrant and seems disgusted when Froot drops some jewelry with circuitry.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Tribblehttps://40.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m0o9j55YNP1qe447yo1_500.jpg

As the Starfleet personnel and their Ferengi companions leave Conchitez, Ravi notices a man hanging around her office. Darius Littlefeather says little and returns to his farm. The away team heads to the ranch of Lissan th'Zerath, whom Froot found to be suspicious.

The Andorian catches the interlopers snooping around her barn, and Froot knocks her out and ties her up. Tau makes sure that Lissan is OK, but Ravi and Trill Kimbal find no subspace radio. The party rushes back into town.

They run into Littlefeather, whom Kyerak puts to sleep after conducting a mind meld to see if the mayor is responsible for the unauthorized radio. The half-Vulcan learns that Darius is in love with Maria, but little else.

Froot wants to return to Bol Kerv Shaloo's shop, but the others determine that the Klingons are their most likely suspects. Kimbal and Tau corner Kolad, while Kyerak and Ravi question tense Kurgh.

The lonely mechanic eventually admits that he has cobbled together a subspace transmitter. The Starfleet officers are relieved when Kurgh says that he hasn't heard back from the

Klingon Empire, but he adds that he has received a mysterious response, which Kimbal records.

Kimbal and Ravi tell Kurgh that his radio could draw attention from Irdrant. He shuts it down, and they take key components. Kyerak and Froot talk with Mayor Conchitez, who asks them to help open trade between Folkhar and Irdrant.

http://www.coldnorth.com/owen/game/startrek/universe/source/planets/mapofaldebaran.jpg

Froot notes that they are wanted by the authorities in industrial Irdrant. Kyerak later contacts Huang Peipei, director of the Nar Instel science station, to mediate and help reunite the colonists of Alpha Tauri III.

The team beams back up to the Love's Latinum Lost and makes a rendezvous with the U.S.S. Rotha at Deep Space K-7. Lt. Kyerak reports to Capt. Andelina Nobatu, who is pleased that his team was able to defeat Tal Shi'ar agent Stuvek, arrest Dr. Pramantha, and convince Kurgh to cease subspace transmissions with limited bloodshed or violation of the Prime Directive.

stostarchart2.pngLoyal Kyerak tries to defend Cmdr. Nasami Wahid's harsh orders to "eliminate" any offworld interference, but Capt. Nobatu reprimands her Trill first officer. Chief Chandler requests reassignment from away missions because he doesn't like having primitive slugthrowers drawn on him. Kimbal supervises the remaining refits to the Ferengi ship promised for its assistance.

Tau says farewell to the Federation citizens as they return to their ship, but Capt. Nobatu invites the Love's Latinum Lost to come along into deep space as the U.S.S. Rotha explores the source of the unidentified signals detected by Kurgh....

>>[Sunday, 2 August 2015:] Fellow role-players, it was good to see many of you virtually for tonight's "Vanished Lands: A New Dawn" telecom session. Your onetime diplomatic escorts got a little closer to the chaos dragon they're hunting, dealing with panther-headed Nadisu Rajendra, the cowardly mayor Kenmotsu Masashi, cute but blood-sucking Keukegen, and a gross swarm of eyestalks!

>>Note, however, that it may be another month before we'll be able to conclude this Asian-style fantasy campaign. With Dexter and Sara uncertain for the next few weeks and me traveling later in August, we may not have quorum for the final battle of the Dragon Pass until September.

https://vanished-lands.obsidianportal.com/characters/a-new-dawn-p-c-party-40

>>In the meantime, Bruce, Beruk, and Byron have recommended continuing our occasional "Star Trek: Restoration" scenario on Aug. 9 and 16 -- what do the rest of you think?

https://vortex.obsidianportal.com/adventure-log/star-trek-restoration-episode-5

>>I won't be available on Aug. 23 and 30. We should also continue preparing the upcoming higher-level D&D5e "Vanished Lands" team.

>>I'll see some of you at Drew's place tomorrow (Monday, 3 August 2015) or at "JasonCon 2015" the following week.

https://star-wars-dark-times-jer.obsidianportal.com/>>Stay in touch, -Gene

>More Star Trek is always a good thing!>Gene, I'm enjoying the story you're crafting quite a bit, as there's

some deep philosophical ideas strongly underpinning it. What I'm actually most enjoying is the indecision about how the Federation should go forward....

>We've met some interesting NPC's all with valid ideas about plans for the Federation. And there's been some really interesting ideas in these sessions that haven't been touched on in any of the shows.

>I know we're (more-or-less) a Federation-based group, but in my mind, the BIGGEST question is "Is the Federation even relevant anymore, given that their biggest threats to date (The Dominion and the Borg) are effectively neutralized? And, with the losses in lives and materiel accumulating, how is the Federation able to defend itself and keep order amongst it's colonies?

>(We already know about the Maquis, and how that bitterly divided people in the Federation, and the last world we went to was in a similar state, where all these poor colonists had just been abandoned by those who were supposed to protect them...)

>If the Federation is going to continue, under whose command will it be? And what is the current Council's stance on issues like that? And what about Section 31? (We haven't played that often, but IIRC wasn't there some indication that Section 31 was, if not IN CHARGE, they at least have voices in some influential ears?) -Rich C.G./"DaiMon Froot"

>Since we will not have dragon-fighting quorum this week and next -- let's Star Trek! :) -Bruce K./"Lt. Kyerak"

>>Rich, Bruce, and fellow role-players, thank you for your appreciation of my "Star Trek: Restoration" scenarios so far! I've tried to stay true to that space opera franchise's optimistic tone, big ideas, and swashbuckling characters and villains.

>>Although our face-to-face and telecom sessions take place a half-century after the events of Star Trek: the Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, the wars against the Dominion and Borg do indeed cast a long shadow. I'm already cooking up plans for our next episode!

>>Note that the D20/FATE group will be meeting online on Aug. 9 and 16, so Rich and Drew will have to log into Skype for Ferengi "Froot" and "Tau" to participate. Geoff, you're also welcome to join us!

>>I'll see some of you at Drew's for tonight's D&D5e "Vanished Lands" nautical crew, and live long and prosper, -Gene

>I'd be happy to join if group size isn't going to be a problem (and Divya doesn't mind me gaming 3 nights in a row).

>Rich brings up some interesting storylines, but I would like to emphasize that I don't think dark is the right tone for Star Trek. DS9's dark tone is a big part of why it sits in 3rd place behind TNG and Voyager for me. And my favorite DS9 episodes are the Ferengi ones, the least serious episodes.

>Star Trek is fundamentally about a very optimistic view of the future. Let's not forget that. -Drew

>>Dexter and Sara, please let us know by this Thursday whether you'll be available for our telecom game next Sunday, 9 August 2015. If so, we can proceed with the "Vanished Lands: A New Dawn" finale. Otherwise, we'll probably have to wait another month.

>>Fellow role-players, it was good to see some of you at last night's naval battle between the H.M.S. Dauntless and the pirate ship Bronze Storm in the D&D5e "Vanished Lands." On a related note, these would be awesome! http://renaissanceminiatures.com/webstore/

>>Drew, I agree that Star Trek should be idealistic, which is part of what distinguishes it from a lot of other recent science fiction. As you know, most of my campaigns tend toward heroic anyway.

>>Those of you with existing "Star Trek: Restoration" characters will remember that we're using similar D20/FATE rules to the "Vanished Lands: Vistel's Expedition" and "New Dawn" adventuring parties. If Geoff and others decide to join our crew, the Obsidian Portal site for my "Vortex" space opera has some rules: https://vortex.obsidianportal.com/characters/d20-fate-star-trek-restoration-p-c-template

>I, for one, hope for a classic Federation-based standard mission for the future. -Bruce

>>Bruce, as you may recall, in Folkhar on Alpha Tauri III, Beruk's Trill "Kimbal" recorded a mysterious transmission that the Klingon Kurgh had received on his unauthorized subspace radio.

>>The U.S.S. Rotha will likely venture farther out to the edge of the Alpha and Beta quadrants to check out the source of that signal. The Love's Latinum Lost could tag along, if its crew sees opportunity for profit.... -Gene

Capt. Nobatu agrees with Cmdr. Nasami Wahid's recommendation that the crew go to yellow alert for the duration of skirting the nebula, and the Trill first officer relays her order to Security Chief Pierre McDonnough.

DaiMon Froot requests permission to accompany the Rotha, and Capt. Nobatu reluctantly orders engineer Lt.Cmdr. Akira Gorou to extend the starship's warp field to enclose the Love's Latinum Lost.

Lt. Kyerak asks Capt. Nobatu permission to observe her command style so that he may learn from it. The Terran human gives her consent for him to stay on the bridge, as long as the half-Vulcan is able to fulfill his regular duties.

http://101st-fleet.com/fleet-recreation/fleet-archives/uniformsLt. Jarric Jameson goes to ask Mr. Kyerak a question, but when he sees the officer with the captain, the human colonist turns on his heel and goes the other way down the corridor. Jarric then bumps into a half-Klingon and a Trill.

After listening to Ferengi crewmates Froot and Tau talk about oo-mox (earlobe massages), Kimbal Tegan requests permission to leave the Love's Latinum Lost for the Rotha. The Trill pilot seeks out Cmdr. Wahid, with whom he has a shared history.

http://en.memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Oo-moxLt. Orzzek Kalifa conducts research on the Betreka Nebula. The Andorian science officer learns that the nearest charted worlds are the Nuburon colony; Tammeron, known for smuggling biotech; and the former slavers of Skagaran. Lt. Jameson asks his superior, Lt. Artemis Borellis, for permission to study advanced tactics and munitions in addition to his existing survival skills. The Betazed counselor approves.

Sometime later, the Rotha's junior officers compare notes in the "Starlight Lounge," as Bolian bartender Mr. Vallcin provides food and drink. Kimbal notes that the area is rife with smugglers and bandits and recalls a Bajoran prophecy of a wanderer finding paradise.

Back on the Ambassador-class starship's bridge, Lt. Kalifa scans the nebula and finds a protostar emitting charged particles but no warp signatures. Lt. Kyerak takes a shift at the helm, while Mr. Tegan reaches out psionically.

The Rotha detects a Starfleet hull in the nebula. It is the U.S.S. Essex NCC-173, a Daedalus-class ship believed lost with all hands more than 250 years before many parsecs away near the Mab-Bu VI.

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/USS_Essex_(NCC-173)http://www.starshipmodeler.info/gallery13/

jm_041109_daedalus8.jpgMr. Kyerak searches Starfleet records for the Essex crew and learns of Capt. Bryce Shumar, Cmdr. Steven Mullen, and Lt. Morgan Kelly. Orzzek finds that the derelict vessel has lost pressurization and that its warp core has been dumped.

Jarric checks with Dr. Jones, the holographic chief medical officer, for supplies such as vacc suits for a potential survey of the Essex.

Kimball informs his Ferengi friends of an opportunity for salvage, and Capt. Nobatu approves an away mission. She assigns security officer En. Scalzi to join Lt. Kyerak, Lt. Jameson, Lt. Kalifa, and Mr. Tegan.

Lt. Kyerak then makes his way to the command center, but he finds bridge controls nonresponsive. Lt. Kalifa examines the main computer core and finds corrupted code.

mocid=374839&id=/user_images/60025/13851477246Mr. Tegan and En. Scalzi keep in contact with Lt. Jameson and check sickbay. They report that it has been strangely stripped of medical equipment and move on to main engineering.

Kyerak searches the officers' quarters and finds that the archives have been wiped. He does find old uniforms and a notebook of Atina Xdar, an Andorian who was the starship's acting captain when it was disabled centuries ago.

http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?p=4824474http://www.daedalusclass.com/schematic3.jpg

Orzzek observes that the corrupted code in the Essex's core tries to jump to his tricorder, and he recommends tech quarantine procedures. As Kimball and En. Scalzi search for a ship's library, Jarric calls them back to the shuttle. He says that he has been unable to raise the Rotha, which is apparently suffering from power fluctuations.

http://i.imgur.com/shYNmlf.jpgThe away team undocks and reads the final entry in Xdar's journal: "They've gotten under our skin. We're spacing the dead. Remember us...."

>>Fellow role-players, who of you will be available for a telecom game this coming Sunday, 6 September 2015? Let us know if you'll be busy with Labor Day weekend activities.

>>I could continue our "Star Trek: Restoration" scenario, or we could begin the higher-level D&D5e "Vanished Lands" team! Note that I won't be around on Sept. 20. Let me know what you think, -Gene

>I think I can make it Sunday night. -Beruk A.

>I can be there on Sunday. -Byron V.O.

>>Beruk and Byron, thanks for your replies. I don't know yet whether we'll have quorum for a telecom session this coming Sunday, 6 September 2015.

>>Dexter and Sara most likely won't be available, and Josh and Geoff prefer to wait for the higher-level D&D5e "Vanished Lands" team to begin. Bruce, what about you?

>>If we have three or more people, we could proceed with "Star Trek: Restoration" or work on the Level 10 Player Characters. I'll call it one way or another by tomorrow night.

>>In the meantime, stay in touch, and have a good holiday weekend, -Gene

>I would be available Sunday night and would love to continue Star Trek. -Bruce K.

>>OK, let's return to the final frontier this Sunday! Unless I hear otherwise, I'll see Beruk, Byron, and Bruce online around 7:00 p.m. Eastern time. -Gene

>In the interests of full disclosure -- I was late at a picnic and apologize profusely. I am prepared for the Klingon pain sticks. Sorry for not getting home in time to join you. -Byron

>>Byron, note that Beruk, Bruce, and I waited an hour and a half for you the other night. While it would have been nice to continue our "Star Trek: Restoration" telecom game, I understand that much of our group was busy over Labor Day weekend.

>>Last night's face-to-face session of the D&D5e "Vanished Lands" nautical crew went well, and I look forward to our eventual higher-level adventuring party.

>>Ken, there's not much to go on, but CBS is no doubt launching the next Trek as a way to promote its online channel, just as others have done with Powers, The Man in the High Castle, and Daredevil. It's also likely that the TV network views space opera fans as outside its regular audience (The Big Bang Theory notwithstanding).

>>Let's hope the script for the next Trek is better than the trailer indicated.... http://www.cracked.com/blog/why-star-trek-reboot-hates-idea-being-star-trek/

>I have very little hope. The trailer was TERRIBLE. And I read the Simon Pegg interview where he said the trailer wasn't representative of the movie... but on the other hand he supposedly tried to quit from writing the script three different times due to studio interference, so that certainly doesn't bode well. -Jim J.D'B.

>>Jim and fellow "Trekkers," the periodic downturns in our favorite franchises are among the reasons why we write our own fiction or devise our own role-playing scenarios.

>>While I've tried to stay optimistic, I agree that recent Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings/Hobbit, and Doctor Who games have often been more entertaining than the "official canon."

>>Fortunately, there's also a lot of great genre TV right now, including superhero shows on the CW, ABC, and Netflix, as well as science fiction on BBC America, Amazon Prime, and SyFy -- who'd have thunk it?

>>Movies are always hit or miss, although I look forward to eventually comparing notes with you on The Force Awakens (not everyone cc:'ed here has seen it yet, so let's avoid "spoilers").

>>Live long and prosper, and I hope you and Cathey have a very Merry Christmas! -Gene

>>I agree with this: http://www.axanarproductions.com/david-gerrold-on-cbs-vs-axanar-part-3/

>Gerrold makes some good points. The fact is that the fan films are and have been infringement on Copyright held by Paramount. Now that it is possible to make films with studio-like production values, fan films can compete with Studio productions - especially where, as here, you have professionals involved.

>But that ignores the fact that more interest in Star Trek is better for CBS, better for Paramount, and better for fans. So, they should sit down and work something out. Being belligerent towards Paramount/CBS is foolish because they really hold the cards here.

>The smartest thing to do in the copyright/trademark realm is to ask permission first. If the Axanar folks had gotten permission in the first place, they wouldn't be in this pickle. It's also a threat to studios when you can raise funds through crowd-funding. And with a vehicle like Star Trek with multiple trademark and copyright protections in place, it's not going to fly -- literally.

>That said, I'd like to see Axanar. It would be great if CBS would just say OK, but you guys have to release it on our new platform first, and agree to rights for the project. -Erik Lutwin

>>Erik, I agree that the producers of Axanar should have checked with Paramount/CBS/Viacom before launching their Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. However, the studio has allowed increasingly sophisticated fan films to be made (as long as they're not for profit), helping to nurture the fan base during the lean years between Star Trek movies and assorted TV series.

>>In fact, I've pointed out a number of recent fan films that were arguably superior to Into Darkness, but Disney/Lucasfilm has been more

savvy about tapping into community talent, even having fans build the physical models for R2-D2 in the Star Wars prequels.

>>Let's hope that Axanar can ride out the dispute, that Star Trek Beyond is better than the initial teaser suggested, and that the upcoming streaming-only TV series is a worthy franchise continuation! Live long and prosper, -Gene

>I can see all the legal issues, and I do understand Paramount's stance. They do have to protect their property. But there has to be a solution that would work well for everyone.

>More broadly, a big part of the problem is, as Gene says, that other companies (Disney, mainly) have done a far better job of reaching out to fans and making them feel involved in their franchises.

>When you've got people dedicated enough to spend all their money and time producing fan films, doing cosplay that's indistinguishable from movie-quality, etc., you'd think that a smart company would find a way to take advantage of that enthusiasm rather than make the fans an enemy.

>Even more broadly, and the Gerrold piece speaks to this, Paramount has done a terrible job as a custodian of the Star Trek universe, and brand. Compare their work, especially post-Voyager, to what Disney has done both with Star Wars and with the Marvel Universe.

>We may disagree on specific movies or choices, but I think we would all agree that the people in charge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe care deeply about that world and have a good understanding of how that world works, what the core ideas of it are, why the hard-core fans love it, and how to also make it appeal to a broader, non-fanatic audience. The same for Star Wars.

>I don't think you can say that about Star Trek, at least not for the last 10+ years. -Jim J.D'B.

>Gene et al: If I were the one in charge of Axanar, I would have used original names, logos, etc., even before writing the script, so that my team would own all the rights to the movie, effectively giving the finger to Paramount, CBS, and Viacom.

>I would promote the movie to the Star Trek fandom as a movie that is not Star Trek, but is more true to the original spirit of Star Trek than what recently has been officially made.

>If I were Paramount, I would support Axanar and do some kind of profit sharing with the filmmakers (if it makes a profit from DVDs, merchandise, etc.).

>This is not without precedent: Shapeways is a company that does 3D printing on demand. Artists can place their art into the Shapeways store and Shapeways will process customers’ orders, print the item, and ship it out, giving the artist a copyright royalty for each sale. About two years ago, Shapeways made a deal with Hasbro.

>Apparently, many artists were fans of various franchises to which Hasbro owned the merchandising rights. Now what fan artists can do on Shapeways is sell 3D fan art, and the royalty is split between the artist and Hasbro. (Hasbro takes 35% of the royalty.) After uploading the art, the artist has to wait for approval and sign a licensing agreement.

>Friends: As I said before, all the Axanar team needs to do is change some words, logos, spaceship designs, and a few other copyrighted things, and they will own all rights to an amazing movie. I’m sure Star Trek fandom will like the movie, and the current legal battle would not only go away, but would serve as free publicity for the movie.

>It’s interesting to see the comments on YouTube saying that the Prelude to Axanar short film is so much better than what Hollywood has been making.

>If the Axanar team makes the movie officially non-Star-Trek, then they can even grow their own franchise, giving the Star Trek fans

what they really want, movies that are true to the original spirit of Star Trek, which is why the fans became fans in the first place.

>The Axanar team could license the rights to its own independent franchise to other fan-film filmmakers, who may start enthusiastically making Axanar-franchise fan films instead of Star Trek fan films.

>The Axanar team and their licensed fans could even make money with merchandising. -Carlo

>>Carlo, I agree that it shouldn't be too hard for the Axanar team to make a few changes to get around Paramount's prohibition, but I don't like the implications for the numerous, often-excellent Trek fan films being made.

>>Lucasfilm has been tolerant and even encouraging of fan films, helping to nurture the community between cinematic releases.

>>You're also right that the best genre entertainment of each generation should inspire new creators, not just infinite reboots, sequels, and alternate continuities.

>>I'm also annoyed that Paramount dropped the stop-motion Little Prince film, which was due to be released next week. There's a lot of great animation out there that's not Disney/Pixar or Studio Ghibli.

a derelict starship. The U.S.S. Essex, NCC-173, was presumed lost with all hands more than 250 (Terran) years ago many parsecs away.

https://vortex.obsidianportal.com/adventure-log/star-trek-restoration-episode-6

Lt. Kyerak reviews the last log entry on the bridge of the Daedalus-class Federation starship. "They've gotten under our skin. We're spacing the dead. Remember us," said Atina Xdaar, an Andorian and acting commander of the Essex.

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/daedalus/daedalus-model2.jpg

Lt. Jameson downloads what he can from the ship's computer core before being forced to stop by a virus. Mr. Tegan relays communications from main engineering, where he attempts to restore power. Security officer En. Scalzi stands by.

On the Rotha, Chief Chandler is unable to maintain a transporter lock on the away team because of power fluctuations. Capt. Andelina Nobatu orders him and Lt. Orzzek to take a shuttlecraft over. Ravi requests Mr. Vallcin because of his immunities.

DaiMon Froot and Tau notice the flickering lights on the Rotha and Essex and raise the Love's Latinum Lost's shields. They also see an unidentified dodecahedral craft docking with the Essex.

Lt. Orzzek, Chief Chandler, and Mr. Vallcin race from the Essex's landing bay to join the away team amidships. Mr. Tegan stays in engineering to deal with the mysterious power drain.

http://www.daedalusclass.com/schematic3.jpgJarric draws his phaser pistol but holds as two robots emerge from the airlock. Cutter and Roller seem surprised to find anyone alive so long after they collected a few previous survivors.

http://images.starpulse.com/Photos/Previews/Robots-cgi-movie-02.jpg

Orzzek and Ravi scan the androids with tricorders, but they don't match any known design. Kyerak asks the robots where they come from and what happened to the crew of the Essex.

Cutter and Roller say that they come from a larger ship and that the nebula's electromagnetic properties "were incompatible" with the Federation vessel.

Kimball crawls into a Jeffries tube to manually override the airlock. Vallcin notices the scent of machine oil, confirming that the robots had previously visited the Essex.

Over on the Love's Latinum Lost, Ferengi Froot and Tau try to communicate with Capt. Nobatu as the Rotha loses power. They also see a larger 12-sided ship come out of warp.

https://johneaves.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/ferengi-vessel-small.jpg

Cutter and Roller explain to Andorian Orzzek and Altarian Ravi that they are members of the lowest caste, with "Light Bearers" and "Sphere Shapers" above them.

However, half-Vulcan Kyerak and human Jarric cut the conversation short, believing that the robots are direct threats to the Federation ships.

Bolian Vallcin tries to defuse tensions by demonstrating how two drinks taste terrible until mixed. Trill Kimball manages to restore functions on the Essex for a second time.

Kyerak and Jarric open fire on Cutter and Roller, forcing them back to their pod. Ravi beams Orzzek over to the Rotha to explain to chief engineer Lt.Cmdr. Akira Gorou how to recalibrate the power relays.

Froot orders the crew of his trade vessel to extend shields around the disabled Rotha. Tau, who is a doctor, not an ops officer, tries to activate a tractor beam and phasers but ends up firing in the direction of the Starfleet ship.

Lt. Jameson, Chief Chandler, and En. Scalzi begin feeling itchy and fear that they are infected by whatever killed most of the Essex's crew. Fortunately, Tau teleports over to treat the interaction between the machine men's emissions and the local electromagnetic fields.

Capt. Nobatu says that the Rotha isn't ready to follow the robot ship, so Mr. Vallcin pilots the shuttle, bringing the away team to the Love's Latinum Lost.

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/3d/ed/de/3dedde5092c85407a8e66f233d8dc606.jpg

The Ferengi ship follows the larger dodecahedron to its homeworld, which turns out to be a hollow Bernal Sphere. The team (with the exception of Froot) disembarks and meets two Sphere Shapers, Prudence and Thrift.

http://en.es-static.us/upl/2013/05/dyson-sphere-artist-2.jpgThe robots explain that the survivors of the Essex whom they rescued "were too damaged," so they enclosed their functioning organs in mechanical bodies.

Foresight and Smasher reassure the visitors that they are well, even if they find robot society a bit constraining. Kyerak gives them some of the items retrieved from the Essex, and Vallcin offers a toast to missing friends.

Orzzek notices that the Bernal sphere is built around a stable transwarp conduit, similar to the wormhole near Deep Space Nine. Ravi and Tau are satisfied that the robots are different from the Borg and not a threat, although Kimball and Jarric remain wary.

The Starfleet personnel and their Ferengi and Trill allies part with the robots on good terms and return to the Rotha.

Ambitious Lt. Kyerak reports to Capt. Nobatu on the away team's findings on the Essex and the machine world.

http://www.cgsociety.org/cgsarchive/stories/2010_01/machinarium/Images/Machinarium_predherna.jpg

Lt. Kalifa tells Trill first officer Cmdr. Nasami Wahid that Lt. Kyerak and Lt. Jameson fired on the robots in self-defense. He also notes the strategic importance of the transwarp conduit.

https://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/sto.gamepedia.com/thumb/3/3c/Trill_Male.jpg/250px-Trill_Male.jpg

DaiMon Froot tells Tau and Kimball that he remains skeptical about the U.F.P.'s ideals.

Chief Chandler still plans to request a transfer to a less-dangerous post, but Mr. Vallcin has had a taste of field missions. Capt. Nobatu orders the Rotha to set course for home....

>[20 June 2016] Sigh… https://imgur.com/EFml0zp [the untimely death of Anton Yelchin, the young actor who portrayed En. Pavel Chekov in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek films] -Ken G.

>>Yeah, I saw that on Facebook. Sad news indeed. -Gene

>Same here ... really sad. -David I.S.

>Paramount & CBS have decided to put restrictions on Star Trek fan films: http://www.startrek.com/fan-films

-No more than 30 minutes long-No sequels or seasons allowed-All Star Trek props & uniforms must be official merchandise, not

homemade-No Star Trek alumni actors are allowed to participate-No fundraising above $50,000-No physical distribution on DVD

>Ridiculous. :( -Ken G.

>>Interesting. While I understand that Paramount and CBS want to control the quality and creations around their popular Star Trek brand, I think these restrictions are too tight.

>>Most of the excellent fan films of the past several years would not be allowed under these terms, and I hope they'll be grandfathered in.

>>Various studios have already cracked down on bootleg videos at conventions and online, but fans may well turn back to such distribution methods.

>>This is a setback for the Axanar supporters -- I'm one of them -- and it's too bad that the companies don't understand IDIC.

>>I suspect there'll be more lawsuits, but in the meantime, I'll keep reading Trek fanfic, creating tabletop RPG scenarios, wearing unofficial costumes, and hoping the franchise earns our respect! Live long and prosper, -Gene

>I understand that there are intellectual property issues involved that probably require Paramount/CBS to respond in some way, they are fools for taking such a hard line.

>If you have fans who so love the world you've created that they are willing to spend all their leisure time, and thousands of dollars, to create their own stories in that world, it seems as though you ought to be able to find some way to let them do it (which provides free advertising for your intellectual property) and make money on it yourself. LucasFilm figured it out with the Star Wars fan film awards.

>But instead they decide to treat their most loyal fans as the enemy and sue them. Idiots. -Jim J.D'B.

>It's very interesting. While it says it is not a license it reads like one. I think it's perfectly understandable and reasonable for CBS to set limitations on fan films. I do think however, that they went a little overboard in their limits. First, what I agree with:

-Fan films should be non-commercial. It's CBS' intellectual property. They get to make money.

-Limited budgets. Axanar aside, CBS is not inviting direct competition to official movies and shows.

-Use of official merchandise. Sorry, kids, but if you using in on film it should be official -- unless it's not commercially available. If your story calls for something that isn't official that's no problem. Frankly, I very much doubt and CBS will go after anyone on this one anyway. But if you got a kick starter I think they would.

-Having actors who are presently in Star Trek projects in your film. Yeah it would be really cool to have Zachary Quinto or Zoe Saldana.

>What I don't agree with:-Fan should be able to create serials or longer works if they wish. -Actors and folks who used to be on Star Trek projects but are not

currently employed should be allowed to have fun too -- but not the main characters without CBS permission unless as part of a parody.

-Moreover, CBS should be flexible if requested beforehand by behind the scenes folks who wish to practice their craft on their own time on an unpaid basis.

>I think they should grandfather in existing fan films -- provided no money changes hands. What do you think? -Erik B.L.

http://www.forcesofgeek.com/2016/06/star-trek-fan-film-guidelines-slight-most-dedicated-fanbase.html

>Friends: I reposted what I said in January (see below). Paramount should just do profit sharing, or some other mutually beneficial arrangement. Also, fans, and makers of fan films, need to stop enslaving themselves so much to popular franchises and embrace original fictional universes. There are many amazing original science fiction, fantasy, and horror independent movies made every year and shown at various genre film festivals around the world.

>Here are brief descriptions of the arrangement:http://3dprintingindustry.com/2014/08/28/shapeways-hasbro-let-fans-

partnership-allow-fans-to-sell-transformers-fan-art-and-more/ -Carlo

>Huh. It'll be interesting to see what this looks like. -Ken G. http://renegades.show/home/a-message-from-the-renegades-team-regarding-the-new-fan-film-guidelines/

>>Ken, as Carlo and Erik noted, some Star Trek fan films will be able to strip out the branded stuff and be presented as original science fiction. Others, especially those lovingly accurate to the original series, will unfortunately have to cease until the studios realize that they shouldn't bite the hand that feeds them.

>>Dungeons & Dragons went through a similar evolution. In the early 2000s, Wizards of the Coast (which had bought TSR) released the D20 Open Game License, which led to a boom of third-party publishers supporting the third edition of that fantasy tabletop RPG, D&D3e.

>>But the quality -- and, indeed, decency -- of some of the materials started to slip, so WotC tightened the restrictions in its Game System License with D&D4e. The D&D3x/D20 boom crashed, leading to retro-clone rivals such as Paizo's Pathfinder.

>>More recently, WotC has belatedly released a slightly less restrictive OGL for D&D5e, but some of the publishers and role-players have moved on. Paramount/CBS risks losing even more Trek fans to Star Wars and other franchises.... -Gene

>I haven't gone to any Star Trek films since the 2009 reboot. I'm not interested in wasting my money on crap.

>The first film was the only serious attempt at an intelligent, epic hard SF Star Trek story. Most of the rest have just been milking the franchise.

>When the new series comes to regular television I'll take a look at it. But I'm not going out of my way to find it on some streaming service, and I'm not about to pay to see it. I have plenty of other things to do with my time, such as reading books, where most of the intelligent SF has always been found. -Brian McGuinness <[email protected]>

>Star Trek's hard to make both cerebral and successful on the big screen. It's been done, but even back in the day it wasn't quite the ideal platform for delivering intellectual stories in the Trek framework.

>It's sort of an unfair comparison between ST movies and ST TV series. Movies have 2 hours to get it "Right" (meaning generate buzz that gets people to pay for a ticket) or there is no sequel. One shot, that's it. Even if the movie is a hit and you get to make 2 follow-up films (3 in the case of JJ-verse Star Trek) that's a total of only 6 or 8 hours of content for the franchise. It you're the average Ferengi studio head, you go with the sure thing: 'Action - Adventure' Star Trek.

>The TV version of Star Trek has something like 728 hours of content. That's literally a month, 30 days of continuous airtime to try things out vs. 8 hours of screen time. Comedy, tear-jerk drama, action/adventure, philosophical musings, political commentary, and yeah... cerebral stuff. Movies? No time to make mistakes and recover. 120 minutes and you're done.

>Thankfully, that new TV series is executive produced by the director of Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country, and it's headed by Bryan Fuller.

There you go, more time to get deep, without the Sword of Damocles ("Profit, or else...") hanging over their heads. One hopes that they make the most of this opportunity. -John C.

>I personally didn't like Pushing Daisies, but I can separate my own personal likes from the ability to recognize that the show made an effort.

>I understand that the pilot for the new show will be on regular TV, and they've been purposefully vague on episodes after that. They want to push their service over already popular services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, but I strongly suspect that the new series will make it to regular television -- it just won't be available online via services that are not CBS All Access. -Josh W.

>I hate the idea of subscribing to a streaming service just to see Star Trek.

>Bryan Fuller is a good choice. Haven't seen Hannibal, but I liked the other too. Pushing Daisies was full of . . . deranged whimsy? -Stefan Jones [email protected]

>Star Trek's hard to make both cerebral and successful on the big screen. It's been done, but even back in the day it wasn't quite the ideal platform for delivering intellectual stories in the Trek framework.

Thankfully, that new TV series is executive produced by the director of Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country, and it's headed by Bryan Fuller, who developed the Hannibal TV series, which I understand was quite cerebral, created Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies, and has written not terrible episodes of DS9. So I'm much more hopeful than I was when the show was originally announced.

>I figured this was the case long ago, but it is kind of refreshing to read someone just say it. The place to get thoughtful, or at least complex-enough-to-be-engaging, SF&F these days is television.

https://www.inverse.com/article/17139-chris-pine-says-a-brainy-star-trek-movie-wouldn-t-work-in-today-s-hollywood>Back in 1965, NBC told Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry his science-fiction TV show was “too cerebral” for television audiences to enjoy. And it looks like in 2016, our current incarnation of the heroic Captain Kirk agrees with that assessment. While making the interview

rounds for Star Trek Beyond, Chris Pine said, “…you can’t make Star Trek cerebral in 2016. It just wouldn’t work in today’s marketplace.”

>To be fair, these comments can be read as a defense against the perception that Star Trek Beyond is valuing fast-and-furious action over philosophical rumination. Pine went on to say that the recent Star Trek films have attempted to “hide” complex themes inside of bigger, louder narratives but that right now, doing anything more interesting or thoughtful is “tricky.” -Stefan J.

>>Thanks, Carlo. I had seen threads on Chris Pine's Trek comments last week.

>>Naturally, I don't agree that it's impossible to do thoughtful science fiction today, whether it's in books, games, movies, or television. The Expanse, The Martian, and other recent works show that they're possible, even if they're not to everyone's taste.

>>That said, I do think Paramount/CBS is struggling with how to appeal to both the older fans of the franchise and to newer and potential viewers. My expectations for Star Trek: Beyond are lower than for the next TV series, since the movies have always tended to be villain-centric. Movies must also satisfy studio demands for profit -- hence all the recent "requels" rather than solid additions to several series.

>>TV shows (and I'm including streaming) can spend more time developing characters, settings, and stories. For example, Star Wars: Clone Wars and Rebels have patched many of the continuity and plot holes of that franchise's prequel trilogy and bridged the two other sets of movies.

>>At its best, Star Trek should be optimistic and heroic, focus on friendships, and mix relevant social allegory with plausible and speculative science. Let's hope that J.J. Abrams and company call it a day with Beyond and that Brian Fuller and company strive for Gene Roddenberry's ideals with the next TV series! I happen to like Pushing Daisies, but Trek will require a lot more.... LLAP, -Gene
