Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is achronic metabolic disease, withhigh glucose levels in the blood,resulting from defects in theinsulin action or secretion, orboth. Insulin is a hormoneproduced in the pancreas. Themost common types are type 1and 2. Type 1 is characterised byan inability to produce insulintriggered by an immune-medicated destruction of betapancreatic cells. Type 2 involvesan insufficient response to theinsulin that is produced.Common signs and symptomsof diabetes are increased thirst,increased urination, increasedappetite, weight loss, fatigue,recurrent urine infections,blurred vision, numbness,tingling, and pain in the feet.

Glucose - Measuring the level of

glucose in the blood is the most direct test to discover diabetes.

Glycated Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) - Evaluates average

amount of glucose in the blood over the last 2-3 months. Glucose in blood binds to proteins like haemoglobin producing glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). The higher the amount of glucose the higher the amount of HbA1c. The combination of the HbA1c result and the glucose result provide a good indication of your glucose metabolism.

Urine albumin & urine/ serum creatinine - Testing for

these proteins, their ratio (ACR) and the estimated glomerular function rate (eGFR) allows to screen for kidney disease, a common complication of diabetes.

This profile helps assessing risk of atherosclerosis, developing heart disease, stroke or related cardio-vascular disease. People with diabetes have an increased occurrence of lipid abnormalities that require management to prevent development and pro-gression of vascular complications.

Urinalysis – A set of chemical,

microscopic and macroscopic analysis that can detect some common diseases. Therefore used to screen for conditions such as urinary tract infections, kidney disorders, liver problems, diabetes or other metabolic conditions.

Do you have an inactive lifestyle, obesity, family members with diabetes, hypertension, heart

disease, high cholesterol? Any of these factors increase your risk of

developing diabetes. Women with (gestational) diabetes during pregnancy or a baby over 9 pounds also are at increased risk. Additionally, anyone over 45 is

advised to test for diabetes.

Up to half of patients withdiabetes type 2 are undiag-nosed as they remain withoutmajor symptoms for manyyears, well after complicationssuch as kidney failure, visionproblems and vascular diseaseof the heart and brain may havedeveloped.
