Questions raised as Edina Republican nabs

DFL-inspired domain namesWeb editor for RepublicanSenate District 41registered the webaddresses the same daylegislative redistrictingmaps were releasedBY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Last month’s legislative redistrictingsent lawmakers all over Minnesotascrambling to respond to the new politi-cal maps, but one Republican in Edinawas quicker than Democrats, snatchingup a series of web domain names theDFL might have found handy.

According to domain research data-base Whois.net, on Feb. 21 AngelaBerger, the web editor for the GOP’s

Senate District 41 site, purchasedsd49dfl.com, sd49dfl.org, sd49democ-rats.com, sd49democrats.org anddflsd49.com — the same day the statereleased redistricting plans that takeeffect this election cycle.

The new maps give Edina and west-ern Bloomington, which had been con-sidered District 41, the District 49 label. The new district 49 also includes a por-tion of northeast Eden Prairie.

Former DFL District 41 chair TomLaForce noted Berger’s domain reg-istries the night of Feb. 28 on hisFacebook page, Politics in Edina. Hesaid he was typing potential DFLdomain names into his browser out ofcuriosity, when it appeared he was beingredirected toward the GOP’s District 41site. Further investigation brought up aname he recognized.

“I saw Angie Berger registered it,” he

Third Congressional DistrictDFL candidates get to workDebate March 14 inMinnetonkaBY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Minnesota Third CongressionalDistrict DFL candidates are gettingtheir campaigns underway, hitting cof-fee shops and hosting meet and greetsbefore a March 14 debate.

Brian Barnes and Sharon Sund arevying for a DFL endorsement to ulti-mately run against RepublicanCongressman Erik Paulsen in theNovember primary election.

Both have been hosting several meet-ings to share their platform so resi-dents and delegates could get to knowthem.

Paulsen has also been in the areatalking with constituents, including astop at the Eden Prairie Cub Foods, where people had a chance to sharetheir thoughts and concerns with theCongressman.

A spokesman for Paulsen, TomErickson, said it’s still early in the cam-paign season, and Paulsen is focused onserving his constituents while the DFLcandidates work through their endorse-ment campaigning.

And, they have been. One of Barnes’ meetings, mainly to

meet with DFL delegates, was onSunday March 4 at ParkwayApartments in Eden Prairie, where heemphasized he would be running a pos-itive campaign against Sund, but“attack” Paulsen’s record in the pri-mary election if he gets the DFLendorsement.

He also stressed that it’s possible fora DFL candidate to win the ThirdDistrict, which has been Republicanleaning for some time. He thinks it’spossible even after redistricting.

Under the new Congressional dis-trict map, the Third District willexpand to include outlying westernsuburb cities such as Shakopee, Chaska

and Victoria among others.A special redistricting panel,

appointed by the Minnesota SupremeCourt, created the new electoral mapsthat will take effect next year and serveas the 2012 election blueprint. The dis-tricts determine which geographicareas state senators, members of thestate house and members of U.S.Congress will represent. The new mapsare based on population changesreported in the 2010 Census.

Barnes said DFL ties are strong inthe district, if the state house votes inrecent elections are compared to thethird district congressional votes, thereis DFL strength; only the congressionalraces have been weak, which canchange.

“You look at this Third District andit is absolutely winnable,” Barnes said.

Sund has been hosting similar meetand greets throughout recent weeks. She said she has been running a posi-tive campaign to get positive represen-tation in Congress.

One of her major policy ideas wasannounced at the end of February, anew step to a foreclosure preventionprogram.

“HARP (the Home AffordableRefinance Program) helps people whoare current on their mortgage pay-ments refinance their loan beforefalling behind,” Sund said on her web-site. “HAFA (The Home AffordableForeclosure Alternatives) programallows people to abandon their homesto foreclosure with the intent of mini-mizing the damage to their credit score.…

“‘I propose modifying HAMP toinclude mediation as a required stepprior to foreclosure. Also, I proposerequiring any bank that offers or buysFHA insured mortgages to participatein mediation prior to foreclosing on ahome.’”

The two candidates will introducethemselves further and talk aboutissues during a debate 7-8:30 p.m.Wednesday, March 14 at MinnetonkaCity Hall.

CURRENTRequiring CPR instruction can save lives

Why are Jamie LaLonde,Natasha Fleischman and DaleWakasugi supporting a bill thatwould require Minnesota’s pub-lic schools to teach cardiopul-monary resuscitation? For thebest possible reasons: It savedtheir lives.

Both the Minnesota Houseand Senate are considering billsthat would require all MinnesotaPublic Schools to teach CPR tostudents grades 7-12. Chiefauthors Sen. Dan Hall and Rep.Mary Holberg have bi-partisansupport. In recent testimony, aMinnesota School BoardsAssociation representativeexpressed reasonable concernsabout adding a new mandatewhen budgets are challenged.

However, what’s a higher pri-ority, than teaching young peoplehow to save lives? Testimony sug-gested that about half ofMinnesota’s school districts do,and half don’t teach CPR. So Ihope the bill passes.

Twenty-year-old JamieLaLonde of Bloomington testi-fied that she was working at theMall of America when “I had asudden cardiac arrest … I was 18years old. I’m helping theAmerican Heart Associationwith this bill because the only

reason I’m alive today is becausesomeone that was trained in CPRmade it to the scene within fiveminutes.”

“Although I’m very lucky Istill can’t help but think thatnone of the 16-20 year oldsaround me that were workingwith me knew to start CPR.Sudden Cardiac Arrest can hap-pen to anyone, even young peo-ple, and I think it’s important weprepare people as best we can sothat if they ever do get thechance to save a life they can,”she said. LaLonde is attendingschool at Inver Hills CommunityCollege to become a paramedic.

Stillwater School Board mem-ber Natasha Fleischman alsorecently testified about the bill. She wrote, “CPR saved my life. Iwas a 33-year-old mother of twoin 2002 when my heart stoppedfor the first time (with no knownheart condition). I was workingat the St. Paul Public Schools. Iwas on first floor and the director

of safety and security, WillWaterkamp ran down from the4th floor to perform CPR on me.After the St. Paul FireDepartment defibrillated me fivetimes, I was taken to RegionsHospital, diagnosed with dilatedcardiomyopathy and received animplantable defibrillator (ICD).”

She continued, “I have workedwith the AHA and the Go Redcampaign, as well asWomenHeart: the NationalCoalition of Women with HeartDisease and the Sudden CardiacArrest Association to buildknowledge and skills that savelives…. When someone sufferssudden cardiac arrest, which isoften the case when a high schoolathlete collapses on the field, every minute counts. This legis-lation is meant to have everyhigh school student learn CPRbefore graduating and have theability to save the lives of fami-ly members or friends.”

“In Stillwater, we alreadyteach CPR in our requiredhealth classes. When I conduct-ed a study for the AHA usingthe CPR anytime kit, we want-ed to compare two schools, onethat taught traditional CPR andone that only had a 30-minutecourse with the anytime kit. We

taught kids to do CPR in 30 min-utes. And the preliminary datashowed that their compressionswere more consistently effectivethan those of students in a 4-hour traditional CPR class.Pretty impressive what can beaccomplished!” Fleischmansaid.

Finally, Dale Wakasugi said,“Since my first arrest inDecember 2007, I have made acommitment to myself to helpothers by ‘paying it forward’.To help place as many AEDs inas many public places as possi-ble and to help raise awarenessof the importance of knowingCPR and how to use an AED… Iwant to help high school stu-dents learn CPR and how to usean AED, since my key rescuerwas a high school student whojust learned CPR and how touse an AED in health classthree weeks prior to my event.”

It’s time for us to embrace social mediaWhen it comes to social

media there are two differentJared Huizengas.

First, there’s Jared the indi-vidual who has embraced socialmedia as his second-favoriteform of communication (behindonly text messaging). If he can’tsend you a text message or writeon your wall, he probably does-n’t want to talk to you badlyenough to call.

Second, there’s Jared thenewspaper guy, who eschewsnew forms of communication –particularly those that limit hislongwinded nature. If he is lim-

ited in any way, be it a characterlimit or space, he’s just going tocall you so he can continue toramble.

In recent months, there’sbeen great discussion aroundthe newsroom as to how we canembrace social media as a newtool and utilize it so it helps us aswell as our readers.

Some editors have startedFacebook pages for their edi-tions, while others have migrat-ed to Twitter.

I fall into the latter group.Although, truth be told, it isn’tall that new.

Back in 2009, we experiment-ed with producing daily news-casts. These newscasts lastedanywhere from 2 to 10 minutesand included news from our cov-erage areas and neighboringcities. Some editors naturallytook to being on screen. Others –myself included – showed thatno matter what our moms said,

Becoming a Marinesomething to be proudof, not dehumanizing To the editor:

From a wife and mother of a marine: Thank you for running the articles

on the Marine Corps. It showed what ittakes to become one of the few, theproud. It has the longest basic trainingof all the armed forces (13 weeks vs. 6).My son left the Twin Cities as a boy — 13weeks later he was a man. He had beenyelled at but it did not dehumanizehim — it strengthened him. He learnedfrom his [drill instructors] to be respect-ful, responsible, disciplined, to be a

team player, self-reliant, to be physical-ly fit, that all people are created equal. These values of love of God, Countryand the Corps are with a Marine forev-er.

Let us not forget Marines not onlyare soldiers but they protect ourembassies, have helped in evacuationsof civilians and diplomats, offerhumanitarian assistance to people notonly of America but of the world.

If you are not sure what it is or whatit takes to be a Marine — ask one.

Once a Marine — always a Marine— a title that is earned, not given, anda title that is theirs forever.

Obviously I can’t properly tell a storyin 140 characters or less. In fact, there’svirtually no chance that I can say “goodmorning” with those limitations.

But what I can do by using it is get youheadlines and let you know when there’ssomething going on, when there’s break-ing news or I can just reach out for opin-ions from others. In turn, you can reachout to me without having to call or email.

I try to keep the account as active aspossible and my coworkers do as well. Werespond to questions when we can and wepose questions when they need to be

asked.Recently I noticed other media outlets

following some of the Sun Newspaperaccounts. These accounts don’t actuallytweet anything or interact with anyone, they just seem to be there trolling forinformation and using the stories andinformation tweeted by others as thebasis for their own stories.

This is something we will not do – wewant this to be another tool for us to getthe news to you and hear back from you.

Friends, co-workersremember Andy HamreHamre was ECM-SunPrinting employee

Andrew Hamre is being rememberedthis week as a man who loved fishing, hisfamily and his friends.

Hamre, 49, passed away Tuesday, Feb.28, while at work at the ECM-Sun Printingfacility in Hudson, Wis., from a massiveheart attack.

He leaves behind a wife, two sons, many friends and his co-workers – all whowill miss him very much.

During an afternoon break, Andy suf-fered a heart attack. Coworkers attemptedCPR and called emergency crews, but hedied a short time later.

“As always, our teams pulled togetherbut this time in an attempt to save Andy’slife,” plant employee Maria Beaupre said.“Despite all our efforts, Andy passed away.”

His friends and family quickly men-tion “fishing” when asked what he likeddoing the most in his free time. Andy wasan avid fishermen, and had won severaltrophies for his catches.

Annette said that Andy loved the NewRichmond area for its great fishing, withMary Park Lake being a favorite spot.

“They’d catch bass, crappies, perchand sunnies there all the time,” Annettesaid. His main fishing buddy was son,Josh, age 14.

“They’d compete against each other intheir own bass tournaments,” Annettesaid. Last year, Josh won the contests. “Hekicked his dad’s butt.”

His co-workers at Sun Printing alsoknew how much he loved to fish. He andhis son fished as often as they could, one

co-worker remembered. He also lovedsports, and supported his son who playedin a local baseball league every season.

“Andy was a dedicated, hard-workingand reliable employee who would stay tothe end when things went wrong. Whenthings got tough, Andy got tougher. Hewill be missed by many, as will his singingthroughout the plant each afternoon oncethe deadlines had been met,” CodyGriffin, print plant manager, said.

Annette said Andy enjoyed his workand his co-workers at Sun Printing, where he’d been employed for five years. The work team was like family, she said. There would be occasional disagree-ments, “but at the end of the day, it was allgood,” she said.

Andy grew up in northwestMinneapolis, and attended Edison HighSchool. He worked in shipping and receiv-ing, and he and Annette also operated ahome daycare business there.

They moved to Wisconsin after decid-ing it was time to get out of the city, andtook the family to New Richmond. Theireldest son, Jonathan, 21, is a college stu-dent in Beloit, Wis.

Annette Hamre said she was gratefulfor the friendship and support she hasreceived from Andy’s co-workers andfriends. “I just want to thank everyone fortheir help and for their prayers,” she said.

said. “I was surprised when she didthat.”

Entering sd49dfl.com — or any of thefour other DFL-flavored domain names— brings the user to that address, butthe page bears the nameplate ofGodaddy.com, the service used to regis-ter the domains.

“It’s like she’s trying top keep DFLersfrom getting their message out at all,”LaForce said.

Berger insisted she acted alone inregistering the domain names. “Thiswas an entirely personal transactionthat I made, and that’s all I have to sayabout it,” she said when reached byphone.

“It’s her personal thing to do. There isnothing we have authorized at all,” saidLynn Swon, Republican Senate District41 co-chair. “It’s hard to stop an individ-ual from doing what they are going todo.”

A post under the name Angela Berger, who operates a blog called ConservativeCravings, later appeared in the com-ments section beneath an initial version

of this story posted on minnlocal.com. “Ironically, I didn’t even know about

this technique of buying domain namesuntil I saw this past summer that some-one had purchased a derivative of myblog name and redirected it to the EdinaDemocrats website,” the commenterwrote.

“If you type in conservativecrav-ings.com, it sends you to SD41democ-rats.org. I guess it’s OK for a Democratto buy up a domain name and redirect itbut not a Republican. “

A search on Whois.net shows thedomain has been claimed by an anony-mous party. Berger did not return a call

requesting elaboration. When asked about her personal views

on the use of “cybersquatting” as a polit-ical tactic, Swon responded, “Given thetitle that I am, we’ve got no official com-ment on this at all.”

The Minnesota DFL was looking intothe domain purchases last week. “I don’twant to dignify this with a comment, because I really find it petty,” said KateMonson, Minnesota DFL director ofcommunications.

The DFL does own, at least,dflsd49.org, although it directs browsersto the District 49 that still technicallycovers Andover, Ham Lake and most ofCoon Rapids. The DFL’s page for District41, which covers Edina for the timebeing, is sd41democrats.org.

Neither LaForce nor the MinnesotaDFL allege the domain purchases to bepart of any concerted GOP strategy.

“I don’t know how the local GOPmakes its decisions,” LaForce posted onhis the Politics in Edina Facebook pagethe afternoon of Feb. 29, “but I wouldlike to believe it would not have agreedto do this. I have no way of knowingwhether anyone other than Angie(Berger) was part of deciding to do this.Perhaps in the coming days we’ll learnmore about what occurred here.”

to initiate an investigation into therelationship.

Michel said the false timeline he ini-tially reported was for the protectionof the identity of another staffer whoreported the relationship.

Koch stepped down as majorityleader after the relationship wasrevealed. Michel, who chairs theSenate jobs and economic growth com-mittee, lost his role as deputy majorityleader in this year’s senate elections.

Also a reason for the exit, Michelsaid, is his term-limit advocacy. Thesenator has authored a bill proposing aten-year cap for lawmakers. “I’mimposing my own term limits onmyself,” he said.

Although it’s been ten years,Michel’s decision to end his tenure wasunexpected to many. “It comes as a bitmore of a surprise than it should havebeen, given his talk all these years,”said Lynn Swon, co-chair of the SenateDistrict 41 Republican Party.

It is unclear who will vie for theRepublican endorsement in what, fol-

lowing last month’s redistricting, willbe Senate District 49. “I think it’s waytoo early” to speculate on candidates,”Michel said, although the Distrcit 41Republican Convention is about twoweeks away, scheduled for March 24.

The candidates will seek a jobMichel said he regards fondly. “It’s afun gig,” he said. “It’s a real honor toserve.”

In doing so, Michel said his proud-est achievements were his involvementin making TCF Bank Stadium a realityfor the University of Minnesota, andpassing the Abigail Taylor Pool SafetyAct, which established safety meas-ures for pool drains in response to anEdina girl’s ultimately fatal accidentinvolving a pool drain.

Michel also is proud of being part ofthe first Republican majority in theSenate in 38 years, and chairing theSenate Jobs and Economic GrowthCommittee.

Now, after juggling it all — lawmak-ing, work and family — with thepatient backing of his co-workers andfamily, “it is time for me to repay allthe support I’ve received,” Michel said.

“I’m concluding my MinnesotaState Senate career and again it’s timeto focus on my family and my career.”

engineering class at Valley View MiddleSchool deepened his love of aviation, andby age 17 Jim had flown solo and earnedhis license to fly. His father, by then a 50-year-old World War II veteran and mar-ried father of four who had become presi-dent of the C.F. Haglin & Sons commercialgeneral contracting firm, followed in hisson’s contrails, as it were, and soonearned a license of his own.

“He bought a plane – a single-engineCessna 172, and we used to fly together,”Jim recalled. “We’d take family tripstogether. I had more experience than hedid flying. It was enjoyable, great timespent together. [Because] he learnedabout the aviation world at the later age,he understood what I was doing when Iwas with the airlines. We were able toshare things for many years, because heunderstood aviation. He was either watch-ing me come in on Post Road, pick me upat the airport or listening to me on thescanner. It was quite a hobby of his. He

flew until he was 66.”Bob passed away Feb. 19 at the age of

89, and had last flown with his son in 1987.Like his father before him, Jim too haspurchased a used Cessna 172 – the samemodel, the same color, and with a near-identical tail number, according to Jim’sson, Phil, who is one of his father’s flightstudents (the other being his brother, A.J.)Phil recently soloed during his Christmasbreak, and has logged 30 hours of flighttime.

“[The solo] was one of the mostthrilling things I’ve ever done,” Phil said.“We hangar the plane out of Flying Cloud[in Eden Prairie]. My dad went up withme, and we did three take-offs and land-ings. After the third, he hopped out andsaid, ‘Go take her up.’ That’s when myheart went up. You think, ‘What have Igotten myself into?’ But when it comes toit, you just think about what you need todo to get the plane on the ground. Aftermy third landing, Dad came over and con-gratulated me, and that meant a lot.”

Phil, a 20-year-old EHS alum currentlystudying at the University of MinnesotaCarlson School of Management, said he isconsidering a possible career in aviation.

“I have never had so much fun withsomething,” he said. “It’s a different feel. When I’m behind the controls, that’swhere my head is at. I’m not thinking ofanything else.”

A.J., a 22-year-old EHS alum studyingaccounting and finance at DenverUniversity, plans to continue his flighttraining, but isn’t seriously consideringaviation as a career.

“I want to do this for fun,” he said. “It’sa thrill, something most people don’t do.It’s another experience to get into a smallaircraft and put a different perspectiveonto things.”

“It’s an unbelievable bonding experi-ence,” Jim said. “When you go flying withthem, you are one-on-one. You are teach-ing them something you have such a largelove for and interest in. The fact that theyare wanting to learn to fly makes it easy toteach them, and it’s totally enjoyable.”

Jim and his wife, Sherre, also have ateenage daughter, Callie, who is a sopho-more in high school.

“She’s a wonderful co-pilot,” he said.“But at this point, she’s more interested indoing well at school, and barrel raceshorses.”

Hornets earn their way backto the Xcel Energy Center Edina awarded fourthseed for state tourneyBY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Going to state is becoming a habitfor the Edina High boys hockey team, which will play at Xcel Energy Centerfor the sixth consecutive year.

“It never gets old,” said Edina assis-tant coach Dick Blooston, who hascoached with Curt Giles during all ofthose state appearances.

For many of the boys on this year’steam, the state tournament will be anew experience. Connor Beaupre andNick Leer are the only seniors on theEdina roster. A few of the juniors wentto state last year, but for the most partthis is a new team.

Giles said the Edina team is amature squad despite being young.

“They get excited about coming tocompete,” he said. “We have guys who

work hard and accept their roles.”The Section 2 champion Hornets

will open state Class AA tournamentplay against Section 6 championBenilde-St. Margaret’s at 8 p.m.Thursday, March 8, at the Xcel EnergyCenter.

Veterans on the Edina team willattempt to tell their younger team-mates what it’s all about.

“This week, I want to help set thetone,” said Leer, who played on lastyear’s state team. “I’ll tell the youngerplayers, don’t worry about anythingbut hockey.”

That was the approach throughoutthe section tournament as Edina wonthree in a row.

After taking a 3-1 lead againstBurnsville in the Section 2AA finalsFeb. 29 at Mariucci Arena, the Hornetsneeded late heroics to pull out a 6-3win.

Guards Katybeth Biewen andM.C. McGrory boosted Edina intothe Class 4A, Section 2 girls bas-ketball final.

Biewen led all scorers with 23points and McGrory added 21 inthe Hornets’ 66-52 victory overPrior Lake March 3 at HopkinsLindbergh Center.

“Our backcourt play was fan-tastic,” said Edina head coachMatt Nilsen. “We handled PriorLake’s pressure and held ourcomposure. We have played a lotof close games this season. Thegirls are used to playing underpressure.”

The Hornets opened a 33-23halftime lead, but there weresome anxious moments in thesecond half.

At one point, Prior Lake cutthe lead to only six points, 52-46.

“We did a good job of pushingthe ball up the court,” saidBiewen. “We have had our shareof ups and downs this year, andwe have learned how to hold ourpoise. We kept playing hard whenPrior Lake made a few runs atus.”

In addition to the backcourtexcellence of Biewen andMcGrory, the Hornets had a goodeffort from senior forward andco-captain Lindsey Johnson, whoscored 10 points.

Edina (24-4) will play EdenPrairie (22-5) for the section titleat 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, atHopkins Lindbergh Center.

“We are happy to be in thefinals,” said Biewen. “And weknow Eden Prairie will be atough opponent.”

“Eden Prairie is a talentedteam with a couple of Division Iplayers [Jackie Johnson andShayne Mullaney],” said Nilsen.“We played Eden Prairie twiceduring the regular season, andwe’re familiar with them.”

Eden Prairie won the firstmeeting 63-56. Edina prevailed 36-34 in the second game.

Coach Willard Ikola recalls Hornets’ perfect hockey season – 1973-74 Willard Ikola had 616 varsity hockey

victories during his illustrious coach-ing career in Edina.

When he looks back on his career,Ikola can cite hundreds, maybe eventhousands of highlights, but there’s oneseason that stood out above all others.

His Edina-East team that went 24-0in 1973-74 is considered one of thegreatest Minnesota teams of all time.

“We never had balance like we didthat year, that’s for sure,” Ikola said in arecent interview. “Craig Norwich wasthe best defenseman in the state. Hewent on to have a great career in theNHL. Billy Thayer was the leader, butwe also had guys like Charlie Petersonand Steve Polsfuss.”

In the state tournament, which was asingle-class tournament at the time,Edina-East dominated. The Hornetstrounced Bemidji 6-0 in the state cham-pionship game.

“When I think back, it was reallytough to go undefeated back then,” saidIkola. “We played a lot of good teams inthe Lake Conference, and we had ourannual games with Hill-Murray andMinneapolis Southwest.”

Edina-East’s closest call came in theSection 6 finals against the HopkinsLindbergh Flyers, who were led bybrothers Greg and Mitch Olson.

“Lindbergh upset Edina-West to getto the championship game, and thataffected our kids,” said Ikola. “Weweren’t clicking, and Lindbergh took usto overtime.”

The sense of urgency kicked in atthat point.

“I’m thinking, this is one of my bestteams, and now our backs are againstthe wall,” said Ikola.

His anxiety didn’t last long.“We scored right off the bat, about 30

seconds into overtime,” said Ikola. After beating St. Paul Harding 5-0 in

the first round of the state tourney,Edina-East had one more scare.

Henry Sibley led the Hornets 2-0

going into the third period in the semi-finals. Then the Warriors got a goalearly in the third period to make it athree-goal lead.

“For most of the game, the puck justwasn’t going in the net for us,” saidIkola. “Then just like that, we scoredfive goals.”

Edina-East started much faster inthe championship game, blitzingBemidji. Coupled with the five goalsfrom the night before, Edina-East fin-ished the tourney with 11 unansweredgoals.

Words to live byIkola said there was definitely some

luck involved in the 1973-74 champi-onship season.

“In hockey, you can command agame, but you still have to put the puckin the net,” he said. “Over the course ofa 24-game schedule, there’s a goodchance somebody’s going to come upand bite you. You might run into a hotgoalie or you might not get thebounces.”

The wild card in Edina-East’s suc-cess was the emergence of goalie Jon

Hughes.“He was our Bantam A goalie the

year before,” said Ikola. “With a younggoalie, you realize that everybody hasto play both ends of the rink. To Jon’scredit, he didn’t give up any cheapones.”

Success continuesIkola is pleased with the success

coach Curt Giles has had at Edina High. This week, Giles will coach in the

state tournament for the sixth consecu-tive season.

“The Lake Conference was toughwhen I coached,” said Ikola. “Nothingprepares you for the tournaments likecompetition in your own back yard.Curt had that competition this yearwith Eden Prairie, Minnetonka andWayzata. Maybe Hopkins was down alittle bit, but they always compete.

“When I coached, the top six in ourconference – Burnsville, Jefferson,Edina-East, Edina-West, Lindbergh andRichfield – could compete with anyteams in the state. You get used to play-ing tough teams, and it really helps youlater on.”

They surged in the third period, scoring the last three goals of thegame.

Miguel Fidler knocked in a rebound, and then Connor Hurley’s second goalof the night gave Edina a 5-3 lead.Dylan Malmquist hit an open net forthe final margin.

Edina also had goals from LouieNanne and Tyler Nanne. The Hornetsoutshot Burnsville 37-13.

“One of our goals was to play soliddefense against Burnsville’s big line,”said Giles. “We did a good job, forcing

them to the outside. This time of year, there’s nothing more fun than playinga well-coached team like Burnsville.”

Giles added that he liked Edina’sbalance in the section title game.

“We know what we’re going to getfrom Connor Hurley and DylanMalmquist,” he said. “Some of theother guys got involved tonight.”

One of those guys was Fidler, a soph-omore forward who is new to varsitythis season.

“Scoring that goal tonight was adream come true,” said Fidler. “It wasalmost surreal … the greatest experi-ence I could ever imagine.”

Going into the state tournament as afourth-seeded team is a challenge,Fidler said.

“It is motivation, knowing we arenot the favorite,” said Fidler.

The Hornets are matched against anexplosive Benilde-St. Margaret’s teamin the opening round. BSM has ralliedaround the charisma of junior varsityplayer Jack Jablonski, who was para-lyzed during a holiday tournament inDecember.

Jablonski was on hand to watchBSM defeat Minnetonka in the Section6AA title game Feb. 29. At the end ofthe night, the trophy rested in his lap.

Louie Nanne, the grandson of for-mer Minnesota Gopher and NHL playerLou Nanne, said, “The biggest adjust-ment at state is the size of the crowd. Some of our younger guys were in aweof the size of tonight’s crowd. At the X,

we’ll have three or four times the fanswe had tonight.”

Edina enters state play with a recordof 23-5. Benilde-St. Margaret’s is 22-6.

If the Hornets win their opener, theywill face No. 1 seed Duluth East (27-1)or unseeded Lakeville South (20-8) inthe semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday, March 9,at Xcel Energy Center.

On the other side of the bracket,first-round games pit Maple Grove (24-2-2) against Hill-Murray (22-6) at 11a.m. Thursday and Eagan (24-3-1)against Moorhead (21-6) at 1 p.m. Thewinners will play the first semifinalFriday at 6 p.m.

The championship game will beginat 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at XcelEnergy Center.

‘Flip’ rolls in the points forEdina boys basketball teamBY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Senior forward Philip “Flip” DeBerg ofthe Edina High boys basketball team lovesto compete and win.

This season, the 6-foot-3 two-yearstarter is second among Edina’s scorersbehind junior guard Graham Woodward, and inch-for-inch, he is one of the toprebounders in the Lake Conference.

DeBerg’s performance helped Edina toan 18-8 regular-season record. The Hornetsearned a third seed for the Class 4A,Section 6 playoffs and played sixth seedArmstrong in the opening round March 6.

The winner of that game will play sec-ond seed Minnetonka or seventh seedMinneapolis South in the section semifi-nals at 7:45 p.m. Friday, March 9, at OsseoHigh School.

DeBerg said he likes Edina’s chancesgoing into the playoffs, even though theHornets would eventually have to knockoff No. 1 Hopkins in order to win a stateberth.

“We can play with all the big teams,”DeBerg said recently. “We got off to a slowstart with an 0-4 record, and then we won14 in a row.”

Midway through the winning streak, 6-foot-9 junior center Reggie Lynch, theJefferson High transfer, became eligible.

That was good news for everyone on theteam, and especially for DeBerg.

“With Reggie in the lineup, I can guardsomeone my size instead of a center,” saidDeBerg. “And on offense, I can play on thewing.”

Edina head coach Pat Dorsey describedDeBerg as “a joy to coach” during a recentinterview.

“Flip has played on varsity for three

years and he’s a two-year all-conferenceplayer,” Dorsey noted. “He’s a basketballplayer. He can play wing or post and evenpoint guard. Flip is versatile and a smartkid.”

The Hornets finished the regular sea-son on a high note March 2, beating EdenPrairie 72-64 in a Lake Conference game.Woodward scored 25 points. DeBerg andsenior guard Derek Hill each scored 13.

The win gave Edina a second-place tiein the final Lake standings with EdenPrairie. Both clubs finished 4-4. During thesecond half of the conference schedule,Edina posted a 3-1 record. Hopkins tookthe Lake title with an 8-0 record whileMinnetonka finished 3-5 and Wayzata was1-7.

Basketball has always been DeBerg’sNo. 1 sport, although he also loves playinggolf during the spring and summer.

“I like the competitiveness and cama-raderie of basketball, and winning isnice,” he said.

DeBerg said the most fun he had thisyear was scoring 22 points in the Hornets’71-70 victory over Minnetonka.

The senior forward has had severalother 20-point nights and ranks 11th inLake Conference scoring at 13.2 points pergame.

DeBerg’s philosophy on the courtmatches his personality off the court.

“I always try to stay relaxed and makethe best of it no matter what happens,” hesaid.

When the 2011-12 season draws to aclose, DeBerg’s basketball career will mostlikely end as well.

“I will probably attend a big universitynext year,” he said. “And as of now, I wouldprobably opt not to play basketball.”
