During the Advent season, we’ll draw on the prophetic texts of Isaiah as well as Advent: The Once and Future Coming of Christ, a book by Fleming Rutledge.

Dec. 2 (First Sunday of Advent): Advent Begins in the Dark - Isaiah 63:7-64:12. Advent is properly understood as a season of the second coming, not preparation for his first coming. With the Old Testament prophets, the church confronts a bleak world deserving of judgment. To such a world Christ came and to such a world he will come again.

Dec. 9 (Second Sunday of Advent): The Armor of Light - Isaiah 40:3-5. God’s word of judgment comes at us, cutting us to the heart, so that we will turn to God’s mercy; that is, Advent is a time when we remember that God does not wait around for us to get our act together. God comes to us in his words and fully in the Word.

Dec. 16 (Third Sunday of Advent): Bearing Witness on the Brink - Isaiah 35:1-10. Isaiah and St. Paul see how God’s reckoning of judgment is wide; therefore, salvation is cosmic in scope: new creation.

Dec. 23 (Fourth Sunday of Advent): King of the Last Things - Isaiah 9. Advent is a time where we recall that the “last things” (heaven, hell, judgment) are all already summed up in the incarnation.

Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve): Christmas Eve Services: 4 p.m., candlelight service for families; 7 and 11 p.m., candlelight service. New this year: A nativity scene with live animals in front of the church. Bring the kids! Invite your friends and neighbors!

Advent podcast series and Facebook group: The Crackers & Grape Juice podcast will feature a series of Advent reflections inspired by Fleming Rutledge’s book atcrackersandgrapejuice.com/advent-begins-in-the-dark/. Contributors will include: Will Willimon, Sharma D. Lewis, Sarah Condon, Chenda Innis Lee, Scott Jones, Todd Littleton, Joshua Retterer, Josh Munnikhuysen, Drew Colby, David

Meyers, Kenneth Tanner, Hedy Hall-Collver, Monica Rubino Reynolds, Alex Joyner, Jesse Stalnaker. and Fleming Rutledge. Check out the podcast at tamedcynic.org. +THE HANGING OF THE GREENS LITANY On Screens

+PROCESSIONAL HYMN “Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus” Hymnal #196 +BLESSING AND LIGHTING OF THE 1ST ADVENT CANDLE Reader: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness - on them light has shined... For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:2, 6)

Reader: Today we remember the prophets of old, who demanded to be heard, who dared to speak of a child to come, unexpected liberator of the people, vulnerable incarnation of the Holiest of Holies, a new name for God.

People: Today we give thanks for the prophets among us, who bring to us surprising new visions of hope, who challenge us to think outside the box, who show us a future we never anticipated.

Reader: On this first Sunday of Advent, we light this candle as a symbol of the prophets who renew our faith and remind us of what may be.
