Program Director’s CommentsDr.BennettfulfilledallrequirementsfortheCOMMasterofMedicalSciencedegreeandhascompleted 16 months of research training co-mentored by Patrick McConnell MD and Aaron Trask PhD. She is passionate about a career in pediatric congenital heart surgery and the hands-on foundation in cardiac physiology she gained in the McConnell laboratory prepares her well for this career path. Shaylyn’s surgical knowledge and skills were critical to her success in carrying out these large animal studies using complex cardiac monitoring equipment. She has had the valuable experience of debating alternative research approaches in laboratory meetingsandhasgainedsignificantinsightintoeffectiveresearchdesign.Consequentlyshe now frequently asks probing questions and provides helpful suggestions to others as they discuss their research progress and challenges. During the course of her training she has gained valuable experience working with industry partners. Shaylyn presented results of her research at a number of local and national meetings including the annual meeting of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Academic Surgical CongressandtheSocietyofCriticalCareMedicine.Mostrecentlyshepresented“LVAD≠Rest: Oxygen Wasting by LVAD Unloading” at DOS Grand Rounds on March 29, 2016. She publishedonefirstauthormanuscriptduringherresearchtrainingandhasnumerousothermanuscripts in preparation. She received a prestigious 2014 University Fellowship Award. In 2015 she was competitively selected to receive research training support on the NIH T32 HL 098039 “Congenital and Acquired Heart Disease”. The Organizing Committee for the 2016 COM Trainee Research Day received over 200 abstracts and selected Shaylyn’s abstract to showcase as one of the six oral presentations. Shaylyn’s hard work and persistence resulted in a rewarding professional development experience and recognition not only by her research mentors but by many others in the Department of Surgery, the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the College of Medicine.

Program Director’s CommentsDr.BrathwaitefulfilledallrequirementsfortheCOMMasterofMedicalSciencedegreeincluding completion of two years of research co-mentored by Christina Wu MD (COM, Medical Oncology) and Ching Shih-Chen PhD (College of Pharmacy). Shayna is interested in a career in colorectal surgery and sought out a mentorship team with expertise relevant to colon cancer. Shayna’s research project investigated novel pathways implicated in colon cancer carcinogenesis which can be targeted using novel compounds (glucose transport inhibitors) developed at OSU by Dr. Shih-Chen. This work included in vitro cell culture and molecular biology studies, in vivo rodent work and analysis of human colon cancer tissue samples tocorroborateherexperimentalfindings.Duringhertrainingshepresentedresultsofherresearch at multiple venues including the Ohio Valley Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Annual Meeting, OSU COM Trainee Research Day, DOS Annual Research Conference, Society of Surgical Oncology, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Shayna’s research training was supported by a competitively awarded NIH NCI T32 training award 5 T32 CA 009338-37 “Tumor Immunology”. She is also the recipient of the 2014 Department of Surgery James King Research Award and a 2015 NIH sponsored travel scholarship. Overall, Shayna’s comprehensive research training provides an excellent foundation for a future career in academic colon and rectal surgery

Program Director’s CommentsDr. Drosdeck has been a great role model and quietly effective leader throughout his residency. He was inducted into AOA in 2013. He spent a year doing research in minimally invasive surgery and completed his Master of Medical Science degree. This year he has distinguished himself by coordinating the weekly ABSITE Review Conference for our general surgery residents. Joe and his wife Colleen and daughter Emma will be moving to Portland, Oregon in July where he will complete a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Program Director’s CommentsDr. Elhassan has followed a circuitous route to where he is today. He was born in Saudi Arabia and then came to the United States. After receiving an undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore and his medical degree from Howard University, he did his surgical training at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey under Edward Deitch and David Livingston. From there, he spent a short time in practice in North Carolina, but decided that his heart was really in academic medicine. He came to OSU as a surgical critical care fellow this past year and has excelled in every way. We are thrilled that he will be joining us as a faculty member next month as an acute care surgeon.

Program Director’s CommentsDr. James came to our transplant program after completing her general surgery training at OSU. She quickly learned surgical technique pertaining to solid organ transplantation as well as the art of medically managing this group of patients. She is curious and is not hesitant to ask questions about long held beliefs. She is an advocate for her patients and has good working relationships with support staff, nurses, residents and other physicians. Iyore has a strong interest in translational research and she hopes to advance allogeneic islet transplantation using tissue-engineered scaffolding technology in combination with islet encapsulation as a future project. She is looking forward to expanding her family (rapidly) very soon. Iyore is finalizingplansforjobsaftercompletionofherfellowshipandweknowshewillbesuccessfulwherever her future takes her.

Over the course of Dan’s two years in research, he completed his initial project investigating the effectiveness of patient choice in non-operative versus surgical management of uncomplicated appendicitis in children, and then initiated a new project relevant to his prior training in biophysics. This latter project has really blossomed into novel work which he presented on March 31, 2016 at the DOS Grand Rounds “A Novel Method for Tracking Radiation Exposure from Computed Tomography in Children”. Dan’s research established the groundwork for a multicenter trial analyzing radiation exposure in children. His impressive research accomplishments complement his aspirations to pursue an academic career in Pediatric Surgery.

Program Director’s CommentsDr.OnwukafulfilledallrequirementsfortheCOMMasterofMedicalSciencedegreeandhascompleted two years of research in the tissue engineering laboratory of Chris Breuer, MD. Dr. Breuer is a Professor in Pediatric Surgery and a Director of the Tissue Engineering Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Director of Tissue Engineering in OSU WMC Center for Regenerative Medicine and Cell-Based Therapies. Ekene’s research project investigates innate immune mechanisms causing stenosis of tissue engineered vascular grafts. Results of his studies were discussed at Department of Surgery Grand Rounds on March 31, 2016 in a presentation entitled “The role of myeloid cell-derived PDGF in the development of tissue-engineered vascular graft neotissue formation.” Ekene has co-authored four publications during the past two years. Ekene has given numerous research presentations, attended the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS) “Fundamentals of Surgical Research Course” and theAASCareerDevelopmentCourse.Hewascompetitivelyselectedasthefirstrecipientof research training support on the NIH T32 AI 106704-02 “Advanced Research Training in Immunology for Surgical Trainees.” Ekene’s achievements and experiences have motivated him to continue a third year of research training in Dr. Breuer’s lab. We look forward to Ekene’s continued progress on this exciting project!
