In today’s Mass reading from the Book of Genesis, we’re given the powerful story of the
sacrifice of Abraham’s only son, Isaac. After receiving his son as a gift from God, he offers Isaac
back to the Heavenly Father with profound trust and confidence. Abraham’s greatness is that
he was willing to give to God the most precious thing in his life, the son of his old age, the son
of God’s promise.
Dear parents, this is what God urges you to do! This is the great lesson Abraham teaches you-
to offer your children to God with great confidence. You can’t keep your children safe but God
can. You can’t give them the way to holiness and joy but God can. You can’t save them for
Heaven but God can. This weekend I encourage you to pray this prayer: “Lord God, you have
given to me my children. You’ve entrusted them to me to help them love you. I give them to
You and put them into Your hands. Today and every day I want to entrust my children to You
entirely because I know that they are safe only in Your perfect will.”
MY DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS,
Fr. John Hil t on
