This study elevates the experience of place in the formation of urban structure through a focus on the core spaces of cultural production as revealed through the urban environment of discretionary time and leisure uses. Urban amenities are employed as indicators of these core spaces. Many previous studies on the structure of Los Angeles conclude that the region exhibits polycentrism with a weak or nonexistent core center, trending towards greater dispersion rather than towards centralization. Recognizing that regions can be ambiguously bounded, discontinuous, and internally inconsistent, rather than searching for a binary ‘truth’ with a hard-edged boundary, a postmodern urban center is sought by this study. This new analysis of urban morphology in the Los Angeles metropolitan area reveals both polycentrism and a strong core center. Using a Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) analysis, clusters are identified among the locations of different types of urban amenities. A centrality score is then calculated for every location based on the number of spatially coincident clusters of different amenity types there. This centrality score, in turn, is used to cartographically visualize urban structure and to delimit the central place (Map A ). The methodology, which is validated in the Chicago and New York metropolitan areas, employs multiple regular hexagonal arrays into which amenity location points are aggregated. These amenities are classified according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and grouped by broad categories informed by other research (see legend below). The hexagonal arrays are created at three different scales and at two different offsets for each scale. These arrays, whose analysis results are overlaid for a final analysis output, mitigate against the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) and reveal urban structures operating at multiple scales (Map B). This study identifies a structural core center in Los Angeles, which is christened the Wilshire/Santa Monica Corridor (Map A ). This corridor, comparable in function to New York’s Manhattan ( Map C) or to Chicago’s Loop, is a coherent unit composed of Santa Monica, Westwood, Beverly Hills, Fairfax, Hollywood, Koreatown, and Downtown Los Angeles.
