About the display• When you turn the rotary control toward N/> (press > N for the CD player) after

changing the CD or turning off and on the player, the total number of tracks in the CD andtotal playing time appear for about two seconds.

• During play, the track number and the elapsed playing time of the current track appear.• During pause, the elapsed playing time flashes.

If the volume level does not increase• If AVLS is set to “LIMIT”, set it to “NORM.” For details, see “Protecting your hearing

(AVLS).”• If the headphones are connected to the LINE OUT (OPTICAL) jack, connect them to thei (headphones) jack.

About CD-Rs/CD-RWsThis CD player can play CD-Rs/CD-RWs recorded in the CD-DA format*, but playbackcapability may vary depending on the quality of the disc and the condition of the recordingdevice.* CD-DA is the abbreviation for Compact Disc Digital Audio. It is a recording standard used for the Audio

CDs.

Playback optionsYou can enjoy various ways of playback using the PLAY MODE button and the RPT (repeat)/ENT (enter) button.

You can program the CD player to play up to 64 tracks in your favorite order.

1 During playback, press PLAY MODErepeatedly until “PGM” appears.

2 Turn the rotary control towardN/> or . to select a track.

3 Press RPT/ENT to enterthe selected track.“000” appears and the playing order increasesby one.

4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 to select the tracks in your favorite order.

5 Press RPT/ENT until the PGM play starts.

To check the programDuring programming:

Press RPT/ENT repeatedly before step 5.During the PGM play:

Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “PGM” flashes, then press RPT/ENT.Each time you press RPT/ENT, the track number appears.

B Available features

G-PROTECTIONfunctionThe G-PROTECTION function has beendeveloped to provide excellent protectionagainst sound skipping while jogging.When you set the G-PROTECTION switchon your CD player to “2”, the G-PROTECTION function will be enhancedcompared to “1.”To walk with the CD player and enjoy highquality CD sound using the G-PROTECTIONfunction, set the G-PROTECTION switch to“1.” While taking harder exercise, it isrecommended that you set it to “2.”

Set G-PROTECTION (under the lid) to“1” or “2.”

NoteSound may skip:

– if the CD player receives stronger continuousshock than expected,

– if a dirty or scratched CD is played or– when using poor-quality CD-Rs/CD-RWs or

if there is a problem with the recording deviceor application software.

Available features

Displaying CD textinformationWhen you play a CD containing CD textinformation, the track name, disc name, artistname, etc., appear in the display.

* While the CD player is reading the informationon the CD, “READING” appears.

Emphasizing the basssound (SOUND)

You can emphasize the bass-boosted sound.

Press SOUND to select “BASS 1” or“BASS 2.”

“BASS 2” enhances the bass sound morethan “BASS 1.”

NoteIf the sound is distorted when using the SOUNDfunction, turn down the volume.

Locking the controls(HOLD)

You can lock the controls on your CD playerto prevent accidental button presses.

Slide HOLD in the direction of thearrow.

You can use the HOLD function with boththe CD player and remote control. You canstill operate your CD player using the remotecontrol when HOLD on the remote control isset to off.

To unlock the controlsSlide HOLD in the opposite direction of thearrow.

NoteEven if the HOLD function is working, “HOLD”will not appear in the display of the remote control.

Protecting your hearing(AVLS)

The AVLS (Automatic Volume LimiterSystem) function keeps down the maximumvolume to protect your hearing.

Set AVLS (under the lid) to “LIMIT.”

To turn off the AVLS functionSet AVLS to “NORM.”

Appears when the volume is turned upand beyond a certain level.

Turning off theoperation beep soundYou can turn off the beep sound that is heardfrom your headphones/earphones when youoperate your CD player.

1 Remove the power source (ACpower adaptor, rechargeablebatteries or dry batteries) from theCD player.

2 Connect the power source whilepressing x (x/CHARGE for theCD player).

To turn on the beep soundRemove the power source and then connectthe power source without pressing x orx/CHARGE.

Turning off the LCD’sbacklightWhile you are using the rechargeablebatteries or dry batteries, the LCD’sbacklight turns on for about 5 seconds everytime you press a button. However, you canturn off the backlight to save the batterypower.

1 Remove the rechargeablebatteries or dry batteries from theCD player.

2 Insert the batteries while pressingPLAY MODE.

To turn on the LCD’s backlightRemove the batteries and then insert thebatteries without pressing PLAY MODE.

About the LCD’s backlightThe LCD’s backlight is always turned onwhen using the AC power adaptor.

Connecting a stereosystemYou can listen to CDs through a stereosystem and record CDs on a cassette tape anda MiniDisc. For details, see the instructionmanual that comes with the connecteddevice.

Be sure to turn off all connected devicesbefore making connections.

Notes• Before you play a CD, turn down the volume of

the connected device to avoid damaging theconnected speakers.

• Use the AC power adaptor for recording. If youuse the rechargeable batteries or dry batteries as apower source, batteries may become completelydepleted during recording.

• Adjust the volume properly on the connecteddevice so that the sound will not be distorted.

When using the connecting cordIf the sound is distorted, connect the deviceto the i jack.

When using the optical digitalconnecting cordTo record a CD on a MiniDisc, DAT, etc.,make sure that the CD player is in pausebefore operating the recording procedures.

About the G-PROTECTION andSOUND functions when using theconnecting cord or optical digitalconnecting cord• To record high quality CD sound, set the

G-PROTECTION switch to “1.”• The SOUND function works only on the

output sound from the i jack and not workon the output sound from the LINE OUT(OPTICAL) jack.

About Joint Text (CD text copyingfunction)The Joint Text function allows you to copythe disc and track names that are on a CDcontaining CD text information. Byconnecting a Sony MD Walkman (MZ-R909), which supports Joint Text, to this CDplayer, you can copy the CD text onto an MDduring recording. You must use an opticaldigital connecting cable (POC-5B or othermodel, not supplied) and the RK-TXT1 CDtext connecting cable (not supplied) to makethe connections.For details, refer to the operating instructionsof the MD Walkman.

Using the rechargeablebatteriesCharge the rechargeable batteries beforeusing them for the first time. You can useonly the following rechargeable batteries foryour CD player.• NH-14WM (A)

1 Open the battery compartment lidinside your CD player.

2 Insert two rechargeable batteriesby matching the 3 to the diagramin the battery compartment andclose the lid until it clicks intoplace.

3 Connect the AC power adaptor tothe DC IN 4.5 V jack of thesupplied charging stand and anAC outlet. Then place the CDplayer on the supplied chargingstand, aligning the V mark on theCD player with the v mark on thestand.If the AC power adaptor does not fit theAC outlet, use the AC plug adaptor.

Using the rechargeable batteries

Charging of the batteries starts.In the display of the remote control,“Charging” indication flashes and theindicator sections of light up insuccession. The CHARGE lamp lightsup on the CD player.When the batteries are completelycharged, all indications in the displaydisappear and the CHARGE lamp goesoff.

To charge the rechargeable batterieswithout using the supplied chargingstandConnect the AC power adaptor to the EXTBATT/DC IN 4.5 V jack of your CD playerand an AC outlet, then press x/CHARGE tostart charging.

Notes• During charging, the CD player and the

rechargeable batteries become hot. This poses nodanger.

• If you press > N during charging, chargingstops and playback of the CD starts.

• If you place the CD player on the charging standduring playback, playback stops and chargingstarts.

• Place the CD player on the charging standsecurely, aligning the V mark on the CD playerwith the v mark on the stand. Wrong placementinterrupts charging or playback.

To remove the rechargeable batteriesPush # to remove the batteries.

When to charge the rechargeablebatteriesYou can check the remaining power of thebatteries in the display.

To keep the original battery capacity for along time, charge the batteries only whenthey are completely depleted.

Notes• The indicator sections of roughly show the

remaining battery power. One section does notalways indicate one-fourth of the battery power.

• Depending on operating conditions, the indicatorsections of may increase or decrease.

When to replace the rechargeablebatteriesIf the battery life becomes shorter by abouthalf, replace the batteries with newrechargeable batteries.

Note on the rechargeable batteriesIf the battery is new or has not been used fora long time, it may not be chargedcompletely until you charge and discharge itseveral times.

Note on carrying the rechargeablebatteriesUse the supplied battery carrying case toprevent unexpected heat. If the rechargeablebatteries and the metallic objects arecontacted, heat or fire may occur due to ashort circuit.

Notes on the supplied charging stand• The supplied charging stand can be used

only with this CD player. No other modelcan be charged using this stand.

• When using the supplied charging stand,charge the NH-14WM (A) rechargeablebatteries only. Do not charge any otherbatteries.

• During charging, the CD player and therechargeable batteries become hot. Thisposes no danger.

• Do not place coins or other metallicobjects on the charging stand. If theterminals on the charging stand areaccidentally brought into contact with ametallic object, they may short-circuit andbegin to heat up.

Using the dry batteriesMake sure to use the supplied externalbattery case.Use only the following dry battery type foryour CD player:• LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries

1 Unlock the cap of the externalbattery case, and insert two LR6(size AA) alkaline batteries bymatching the 3 to the diagramoutside the external battery caseand close the cap of the externalbattery case.

2 Connect the external battery caseto the CD player.

When to replace the batteriesYou can check the remaining power of thebatteries in the display.

Battery power is full.

Battery power is getting low.

Battery power is low.

Notes on the powersourceDisconnect all power sources when the CDplayer is not used.

On AC power adaptor• Use only the AC power adaptor supplied or

recommended in “Accessories (supplied/optional).” Do not use any other AC poweradaptor. It may cause a malfunction.

Polarity of the plug

• When disconnecting the AC power adaptorfrom the AC outlet, grasp the adaptoritself. Do not pull it by the cord.

• Do not touch the AC power adaptor withwet hands.

On rechargeable batteriesand dry batteries• Do not charge the dry batteries.• Do not throw the batteries into fire.• Do not carry the batteries with coins or

other metallic objects. It can generate heatif the positive and negative terminals of thebattery are accidentally contacted by ametallic object.

• Do not mix rechargeable batteries with drybatteries.

• Do not mix new batteries with old ones.• Do not use different types of batteries

together.• When the batteries are not to be used for a

long time, remove them.• If battery leakage occurs, wipe off any

deposit in the battery compartment, andinstall new batteries. In case the depositadheres to you, wash it off thoroughly.

PrecautionsOn safety• Should any solid objects or liquid fall into

the CD player, unplug it and have itchecked by qualified personnel beforeoperating it any further.

• Do not put any foreign objects in the DCIN 4.5 V (external power input) jack.

On the CD player• Keep the lens on the CD player clean and

do not touch it. If you do so, the lens maybe damaged and the CD player will notoperate properly.

• Do not put any heavy object on top of theCD player. The CD player and the CD maybe damaged.

• Do not leave the CD player in a locationnear heat sources, or in a place subject todirect sunlight, excessive dust or sand,moisture, rain, mechanical shock,unleveled surface, or in a car with itswindows closed.

• If the CD player causes interference to theradio or television reception, turn off theCD player or move it away from the radioor television.

• Discs with non-standard shapes (e.g.,heart, square, star) cannot be played on thisCD player. Attempting to do so maydamage the CD player. Do not use suchdiscs.

On handling CDs• To keep the CD clean, handle it by its

edge. Do not touch the surface.• Do not stick paper or tape onto the CD.

• Do not expose the CD to direct sunlight orheat sources such as hot air ducts. Do notleave the CD in a car parked under directsunlight.

On headphones/earphonesRoad safetyDo not use headphones/earphones whiledriving, cycling, or operating any motorizedvehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and isillegal in some areas. It can also bepotentially dangerous to play your headsetsat high volume while walking, especially atpedestrian crossings. You should exerciseextreme caution or discontinue use inpotentially hazardous situations.

Preventing hearing damageAvoid using headphones/earphones at highvolume. Hearing experts advise againstcontinuous, loud and extended play. If youexperience a ringing in your ears, reducevolume or discontinue use.

Consideration for othersKeep the volume at a moderate level. Thiswill allow you to hear outside sounds and tobe considerate to the people around you.

MaintenanceTo clean the casingUse a soft cloth slightly moistened in wateror a mild detergent solution. Do not usealcohol, benzine or thinner.

To clean the terminalsIf the terminals on the charging stand or onthe CD player become dirty, the batteriesmay not be charged properly. Clean theterminals with a cotton swab or a dry clothperiodically as illustrated below.

TroubleshootingShould any problem persist after you have checked these symptoms, consult your nearest Sonydealer.
