Mission of Mercy (MOM), which took place on March 28th & 29th of this year was spectacular!

Over the course of these two days, 1,660 people were provided dental care at the Tampa fairgrounds by dentists, hygienists, assistants and auxiliary staff from all over the state of Florida. Media coverage included national and local TV, radio and press cover-age. What a great way to make the public aware of the FDA and its members.

For all of our local LCDS members that participat-ed, your hard work and generosity was amazing!

You are the driving force behind the $1.14 million in dental services donated during MOM and I can only sincerely thank you for your time

and expertise!

Our sponsors, First Citizens Bank, ADS Dental Transitions and Caloosehatche Tax & Financial Services thank you for your support, which allowed for a great nap home by bus!

I look forward to next year and want to encourage all of our members to consider MOM 2015.

Hope International Ministries is a not for profit medical mission organization that currently concentrates their efforts in the poorer regions of the Dominican Republic near Puerta Plata and Sosua, DR. Many

of the people served by the mobile clinics have never seen a dentist or doctor in their lives.

Over five days of clinics in 2014, H.I.M. served 2500 patients; over 177 of them

dental patients seen by only two den-tists with very limited instruments and equipment.

Donations of all usable dental instrumentation and consumables are welcome.

For more information, and to donate goods, services or $$$, please go to this link: www.hopeinternationalministries.org or email:[email protected] for pick-up in the Lee County area.

Thank you for helping bring dental health to the people of the Dominican Republic!

We Care of Lee County, operated by The Salvation Army, is a community-supported specialty care referral and coordination system for the uninsured and indigent, ensur-ing better access to services and greater continuity of care.

This summer we have rallied the support of several com-munity stakehold-ers to explore the expansion of services under the We Care program umbrella by incorporating the Project Dentists Care program, a dental clinic offering pre-ventative and restorative dental care to area residents in need. The recipients of these services are low-income individuals without adequate insurance and/or dental care coverage. In our community, providers of similar dental care services to this population use a sliding scale fee for services; however,

Project Dentists Care is free of charge.

As an established partnership with The Salvation Army, the clinic will continue to operate out of our Outreach Services Center by providing multiple clinics per week, with a capacity of 10-15 individuals per session.

Services are per-formed by volunteer community dentists.

Current partners include the United Way, Lee County Dental Society, Lee Memorial Health System–

Lee Community Clinics, Department of Health in Lee County and State of Florida for Sovereign Immunity, available to local volunteer practitioners and dentists.

New volunteer dentists and physicians are needed!

We are grateful for your support!

Please contact Paul Whitear at (239)628-1455 or (239)233-2381.

July 1st marked the start of a new era as Edison State College officially became

Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW). The dental hygiene program faculty and students over the past year have increased their participa-tion in community activities to improve oral health. The stu-dents and faculty collaborative-ly worked with the Lee County Dental Society to provide cleanings, exams, sealants and radiographs for 115 children during GKAS day held at the College.

The Dental Hygiene faculty and students participated in the Support Head & Neck Cancer event held in Fort Myers. Oral Health Programs were presented by students to local nursing and assisted living facilities, Buck-ingham Exceptional School, VPK and children enrolled in Cape Coral, Naples and Fort Myers elementary schools. The program expanded its effort to improve access to care through

partnering with the Lee County Health Department Women Infant and Children Program and 21st Century Care. The dental clinic provided dental hygiene

services to 450 children. The dental hygiene students continue to complete com-munity service hours with Project Dentist Care, Ronald McDonald House, Christina Smile, College Health Fairs and special projects.

Florida SouthWestern State College Dental Hygiene CE Department will be offering the local anesthesia course for licensed dental hygienists this fall on September 20-21, October 11-12. The CE course has received rave reviews from all participants.

Fluoride is a naturally-oc-curring mineral found at varying levels in virtually

all bodies of water. Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the first field trials of commu-nity water fluoridation as pub-lic health measure to prevent dental caries. Those initial landmark trials — conducted in Michigan, New York, Illinois, and Ontario — demonstrated that adjust-ing fluoride levels in drink-ing water to about 1 part per million resulted in declines in the prevalence of caries in the range of 50%–70%. That effect mirrored what had already been observed in naturally fluoridated communities. The effect on the oral health of this country and others has been so profound that the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control included fluoridation as one of 10 outstanding public health achievements of the 20th century. Every major medical, dental, and public health orga-nization in the world supports community water fluoridation as safe, effective, and cost-effective for preventing dental caries.Unfortunately, community water fluoridation is still opposed by a small but vocal minority. Opponents of community water fluoridation thrive on spreading misin-formation and creating fear and doubt. The arguments have changed over the years, from accusations of fluorida-tion being a Communist plot to take over the country, to a laundry list of claims of health effects supposedly caused by fluoridation. Such claims have been repeatedly debunked by credible science.

Nearly three-quarters of Lee County residents on public water systems currently enjoy the benefits of community

water fluoridation. As we have seen elsewhere, a small number of fluorophobes have been trying to scare the public in Lee County into ending commu-nity water fluoridation in the county. It is essential that this public health measure be protected, and the local dental community has an essential role to play.As a dentist in Lee County, here are a few steps you can take to protect and promote water flu-oridation in your community:

EDUCATE YOUR PATIENTSKeep informational brochures and posters in your waiting area and operatories explaining community water fluoridation. Tell to your patients about how fluoridation benefits everyone in the community, including children, families, and older adults.

STAY CURRENT ON THE SCIENCERead the recent reviews or summaries on the safety and effectiveness of community wa-ter fluoridation. Most of these are available at no charge to members and can be found at the American Dental Associa-tion’s Evidence Based Dentistry website: ebd.ada.org.The ADA’s Fluoridation Facts remains a wonderful resource on community water fluorida-tion. There is a comprehensive booklet of fluoridation facts taken from over 350 scientific references available at: www.ada.org.

ADVOCATE FOR COMMUNITY WATER FLUORIDATIONTalk to your county commis-sioner about water fluorida-tion and why it needs to be preserved. If a commissioner wants more information, offer to be a resource, and if he or she is opposed to fluoridation, find out why. Let the lead-ership of Lee County Dental Society know that you can be counted on to support its effort to protect this public health

measure. Be willing to get up to the microphone at County Commission meetings to speak in favor of fluoridation.

TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUESIt’s important that dentistry speaks with a consistent mes-sage in support of fluoridation. It’s also very important to elicit support from other respected voices in the community dedicated to its health and well-being, including pediatricians, family physicians, nurses, pharmacists, teachers, and hospital administrators.

We have science and credibil-ity on our side, but we cannot afford to remain silent while those who oppose community water fluoridation spread lies and fear. Step up to protect the health of your patients and your community.

Community Water Fluoridation: Still a Great Prevention Measure!
