Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as

sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares drop off like autumn leaves.

~John Muir

In October, I was lamenting the end of summer hikes and the onset of winter’s snow and cold. But the OTHG snowshoe trips in the last 2 months reminded me of winter’s beauty: pine trees flocked with frost, lacy ice crystals trimming a creek edge, sinewy snow sculptures created by the wind, snowshoe hare tracks zig-zagging across the trail (a few lucky hikers glimpsed the actual hare), delicate snowflakes lightly falling, two moose playing tag in snowy willows, snow twinkling like diamonds on sunny slopes, and the best ever PBJ sandwich and hot chocolate from my thermos during lunch break... only half way through winter but I know I will hate to see it end!

By the way, there were 6 snowshoe hikes originally scheduled for the month of December but our leaders stepped up (no pun intended) and the OTHG actually had

nine hikes for the month. THANK YOU, LEADERS! You’re awesome!

Hope you all are having a great winter season whether it be downhill skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, backcountry skiing, etc. Go to the mountains. Enjoy! Elaine Shirley

SECTION VICE-CHAIR’S MESSAGE

In February the RMOTHG will begin offering cross-country (XC) ski trips. These will be Easy II and Easy III trips as classified by the CMC (Easy III trips are more difficult than Easy II trips). We have scheduled the following trips for February (more will likely be added, depending on leader availability):

RMOTHG XC leader Tom Waymire is offering a 3-set of introductory tours to encourage members to give ski touring a try. These are not intended for anyone who has never been on XC skis before. Members must be able to descend 500’ or more. The first two tours will be Easy II and the last an Easy III. No climbing skins are needed, as the modern wax-less skis are sufficient. REI (downtown Denver only) carries good backcountry ski rental equipment (with metal edges – however, not AT equipment). Contact Tom at [email protected] for more information about the introductory trips.

An e-mail announcement will be sent members on the RMOTHG XC ski e-mail announcement list about one week prior to each trip. The announcements will include details about the trip, including descriptions, mileage, elevation, meeting location, etc. Please contact Jeff Flax at [email protected] if you would like to be added to the RMOTHG XC e-mail announcement list, or have any questions about our 2015 XC ski plans.

- Friday, Feb. 6 – Jim Creek – Easy III - Thursday, Feb. 12 – Silver Plume 1st Introductory XC Trip, Easy II - Friday, Feb. 13 – Deadhorse Creek – Easy III - Thursday, Feb. 19 – Breckenridge Area 2nd Introductory XC Trip, Easy II - Thursday, Feb. 26 – Silver Plume 3rd Introductory XC Trip, Easy III

February finds us getting back into snowshoe mode, and hoping leaders and OTHG members recover from injuries! Thanks for your patience and flexibility as trips sometimes change to accommodate varying snow and road conditions, and number of leaders available. On our Wednesday snowshoe treks, we shoe a different trail each week for about two hours, enjoy lunch on the snow, and return to civilization after a pleasant outdoor respite. On February 11, Sue Henley has planned a special snowshoe for us at

Forest Lakes with Alan Apt, the author of Snowshoe Routes: Colorado’s Front Range. He’ll share history of the area as you shoe! You may have heard Alan’s snowshoe presentation at CMC last fall.If you want to receive weekly emails with location and trip details for the following Wednesday snowshoe or winter hike, email Jeff at [email protected]. We welcome newbies and experienced snowshoers as we enjoy camaraderie, outdoor exercise, and Colorado winter beauty!

See you on the trail!

BRILLIANT!

Some of you are aware that State Parks offers a discount on annual passes if purchased in quantity. (These discounts do not apply to Aspen annual passes, for 64+ yr ~ $60). Here is an idea for how RMOTHG members could benefit from this opportunity. We need only purchase 20 or more passes at one time, for each person to obtain an annual pass for $56.00, instead of $70.00 if purchased singly (20% discount for 20-49 passes). RMOTHG member Kathy Kurtz has researched this and offered to be the point person to collect money, purchase and distribute passes. Here are the discounts: 20-49 passes 20% discount $56.00 vs. $70.00 50-99 passes 25% discount $52.50 vs. $70.00

100+ passes 30% discount $49.00 vs. $70.00

NOTE: When purchased in quantity, the date for one year’s use will be the date of the quantity purchase, likely within 1-2 weeks after April 15. If you are interested, send Kathy Kurtz an email and that will let her know the level of interest.

Further details – Look for information in the March newsletter for details on how to purchase. There is a cut-off date of April 15 for collecting money.
