ČD Cargo freight transport in 2008 30
About UsThe company ČD Cargo, a. s. was established on 1 December 2007 in the form of a deposit of part of the enterpriseČD a.s. We are the largest Czech rail transporter. We offer transportation of a wide range of goods, from rawmaterials to products with high added value, as well as the transportation of containers, non-standardconsignments, the leasing of railway wagons, shuttle transport, and other transport services. We offer ourservices on both a national and international level according to the varied requirements of our clients. Thestrategic objective of ČD Cargo, a. s. is to retain its leading position on the market for rail freight transport in theCzech Republic and Central Europe and to be an effective customer-centric company. The company aims tomaximise its financial results by means of the active business organisation of existing and new orders for freighttransport and to optimise the costs of transportation and the operation of the entire company.
With an annual volume of around 86 million tons we are one of the five largest railway transporters amongstthe member state of the EU. We provide services to customers at approximately 1,100 places in the CzechRepublic and through subsidiaries spread around Europe. Our revenues are more than CZK 17 billion. ČD Cargo, a. s.has more than 900 locomotives at its disposal, both electric and diesel. Customers can load their goods ontoapproximately 26,000 wagons of various kinds and onto almost 3,000 hired wagons. The company isconcentrating its investment activities on its vehicle fleet.
Dear business friends,
a new period of our work and, at the same time, cooperation
with you, started by establishment of the independent
company ČD Cargo, a. s. According to its birthday, our company
is still a baby, but it brings considerable experience of a mature
woman from the Czech Railways’ bosom.
And we want to and will continue the experience and a good
reputation that we have built in the field of freight transport.
Satisfied customers have always stood in the first place of the
area of our interest, and satisfied are those convinced that for
their money they got the top quality services.
In order to improve our work quality according to customers’
needs, we proceeded to a massive renewal of our rolling stock.
It is connected with progressive re-branding for the company’s
new blue-blue face. The first locomotives in their new look
are already leaving depots throughout the Czech Republic
worldwide, in order to deliver your goods on time and safely
to their destination.
We believe that our business strategy will ensure a permanent
increase in traffic volumes as well as an increase in our
customers’ satisfaction. We want to be your reliable stabile
partner who offers quality and complex services.
We are going to extend cooperation with our partners even
more, when building and extending sidings and public logistic
centres. We see small deficiencies here, making up for which is
necessary so that nobody doubt that railway freight traffic is
the most advantageous and, even more, ecological way of
moving anything to any place.
Surely you will agree with me that a prosperous company is
not made only by well concluded deals and contracts, but also
by people who work on their fulfilment. Here I would like to
accentuate devoted and loyal work of our employees at any
level, who with us even coped with our company regeneration,
which we underwent last year, and who still stand fast in their
positions to fulfil responsibly their everyday hard tasks. Even
thanks to them we are such a strong and significant European
company in the field of freight transport.
In conclusion, allow me to wish you only good experience of our
company’s operation and thank you for your confidence in us.

ČD Cargo Profile 5
Coal
Coal carriages belong to the fundamental activities of our
freight traffic. Their share in the total carriages is about 30 %
in all traffic modes (domestic transport, import and export).
Transit carriages make up a significant part.
Almost one half of lignite is directed to power stations of the
company ČEZ, a.s., another part is designated for both do-
mestic and foreign consumers, especially in Slovakia. Coal from
the Ostrava-Karviná coalfield ensures operation of energy and
metallurgical giants not only in our country, but even abroad
(Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia). These carriages are
usually realized in full train loads. For minor consumers we
are able to ensure carriages of graded coal in groups of
wagons or as individual wagon-load consignments.
Coal and lignite carriages are realized in the wagons of the
following types: Falls, Eas, Eaos, Es, Faccs, or in modernized
Talls wagons.
Besides coal and lignite, the commodity “coal” involves also
coke and briquettes. For simplification, in communication
with customers three basic commodity groups are spoken
about - coal, lignite, coke.
Building materials
The railway occupies an irreplaceable position in carriages
of construction materials and minerals used in civil engi-
neering. Approximately 8 million tons of construction mate-
rials are transported in Czech Railways’ wagons a year.
Mostly it is limestone, lime and cement, building materials,
minerals, slag and ashes. Carriages of desulphurization com-
modities to power stations and heating plants throughout
our country are very important too.
These materials are often transported in hopper wagons. Cove-
red high-sided or low-sided wagons can be used too. Carriages
of palletized goods and part loads are ensured with Gbgkks,
Gags/Gas, Hbbillns, Habbillnss, Kils or Laails wagons, building
blocks and precast stones are transported in Res, Rils wagons,
masts and structures in Roos or Laaps wagons, Faccs, Falls or
Falos wagons are used for bulk goods carriages (crushed aggre-
gate and quarry gravel, ashes, slag, glass sand and foundry
sand), Es, Eas or Res wagons are utilized for carriages of prefab-
rication, sleepers, pavement blocks and other goods like that.
Food and agricultural products
In this field of activities internal as well as international carriages
of food and agricultural products are included. Besides ensuring
the carriage itself, we develop analyses of transport needs and
propose possible solutions, including a quotation. For long-term
projects we guarantee the price stability. In cooperation with in-
ternational partners we schedule trains according to our cus-
6 ČD Cargo Profile

tomer’s individual needs. We also participate in carriages reali-
zed through inland river ports, such as Děčín or Ústí nad Labem.
Among foodstuff transported on ČD Cargo trains food and
oils, molasses, potatoes, cereals, seeds, food industry waste,
and other goods of a vegetable or animal origin. Under cer-
tain conditions we are able to transport live animals.
For carriages of food modern high-capacity wagons with
sliding wall, hopper wagons and insulated wagons are used.
Grain carriages are ensured with Tdgns, Tadgnss, Hadgs
wagons, biscuits and drinks are transported in Ibb(hpp)s
wagons, covered Eas and Es wagons are utilized to carry apples,
potatoes or sugar beets, Gags, Gbgs, Gbgkks, Hbbillns and
Habbillnss, eventually Kils or Laails wagons are used for car-
riages of palletized goods.
Chemical products and liquid fuels
We have got long-lasting experience in a safe transport of chem-
ical products and liquid fuels. We are specialized in carriages of
a whole range of raw materials, semi-finished products and
products which, with their content, influence on all industrial fields
and affect people’s everyday life. The most important raw mate-
rials carried are certainly petroleum, oils, petrol, diesel, gases, fer-
tilizers, acids, chlorides, oxides, hydroxides, sulphates, hydro-
carbons, phenols, asphalt, plastic products, cotton wool, banda-
ges, paints, resin, cosmetic products, washing powder or tyres.
A very perspective market segment, in which we offer our
services, is carriage of bio-ethanol and MEŘO (coleseed oil
metylester).
For carriages of liquid gases, mineral oils and other chemical
liquid products railway tank-wagons, such as Zaes and Zacns are
used; Tdns and Tadgnss wagons are used for carriages of bulk
goods (fertilizers). Detergents, plastic products, tyres and other
chemical products on pallets and in bigbags are transported in
Gbgkks, Gas, Hbbillns, Habbillnss, Kils, Laails and Rils wagons,
granulated resin in Tams wagons. During carriage of chemical
goods it is necessary to observe loading instructions, especially
the stipulations in Annex I to the Regulations Governing the
International Carriage of Dangerous Goods (RID).
Wood
We offer very advantageous conditions for carriages of wood
and stationery. We transport more than 4 million tons of these
goods a year. We ensure both internal and international car-
riages of green timber, sawn timber, wood chips, wooden fur-
niture as well as its parts, wood-pulp and stationery.
Wood from the regions affected by the hurricanes Kyrill and
Emma was transported especially on the trains of ČD Cargo. By
the fact that in this extraordinary crisis situation we managed
to remove almost 1.8 million tons of wood substance from
the woods we demonstrated four-square that we were able
to response operatively to increased requirements of cus-
tomers in a crisis situation.
We transport wood chips either by classic technology in Fmmrs
and Tirs wagons (the railway transport enterprise ČD Cargo
does not provide them) or in special containers for chips
carriages that are placed on the flat wagon by threes, so-called
WoodTainers. For carriages of wood chips it is possible to
schedule trains individually, or to participate in realization of
the whole technological process.
For carriages of a particular type of wooden or paper materials it
is necessary to use a certain type of the railway wagon and to ob-
serve the loading instructions. The types of Res, Eas, Roos, Laaps
are used for trunk wood, Es, Eas wagons for logs, Res, Eas, Rils,
Roos, Laaps, eventually covered Hbbillns, Habbillnss or Laails wa-
gons for sawn timber. Wooden boards, paper and wood-pulp are
transported in Hbbillns, Habbillnss, Rils, Kils and Laails wagons.
ČD Cargo Profile 7
Automotive
Customers from the field of the automobile industry are very
important for ČD Cargo too. In addition to motor road vehi-
cles made in the Czech Republic, we ensure also transit car-
riages, e.g. from Slovakia to Germany, from Poland to Italy,
and on other routes. For carriages of automobiles private
wagons are especially used.
We are able to offer tailored products, such as a container
train transporting decomposed automobiles from Mladá
Boleslav to Kaluga, Russia, for final assembling.
We are able to ensure deliveries of metal sheets or other
components for manufacturing of automobiles.
Iron, steel, machinery
We have got considerable experience in carriages of iron and
engineering products too. We transport raw materials necessary
for production, especially the iron ore, as well as iron, steel,
non-ferrous metals and products made of them. We succeed
in smart carriages of shipbuilding plates. We are also able to
ensure transport of big machines, such as turbines, pumps,
compressors or steam generators, including out-of-gauge
loads.
A significant commodity in railway transport is also scrap
iron. For its carriages scrap system trains are tailored to cus-
tomers, such as THŰRINGEN, BADEN - WŰRTEMBERG,
LOWER SAXONY, SCHROTT EXPRESS, especially directed to
metallurgical enterprises in the FRG.
Open or flat wagons are used for carriages of this commodity.
Iron products are transported in Es, Eas, Ks, Res, Tams, Rils
wagons, sheet iron in Smmps or Shimmns (coils) wagons, rails
in Res or Scmms wagons, steel pipes and tubes in Res, Roos or
Laaps wagons. Scrap iron is transported in Es and Eas wagons.
Other commodities
We offer you interesting conditions for carriages of goods
that are not included in other groups of the commodities
transported. In case of interest in carriages of such untradi-
tional consignments we try to offer our customers the opti-
mum way of transport in terms of both price and connecting
logistic processes. Within the frame of additional services we
ensure adjustment of carriages of exceptional consign-
ments.
Regarding a variety of the goods types included in this com-
modity, for carriages of them it is possible to utilize virtually
all wagon types included nowadays by the company ČD Cargo
in its operation. Selection of a particular wagon then de-
pends on the goods character and type, on the way of its se-
curing in the wagon, and on a required way of protection
against climatic influences during carriage.
Several types of Uaaik low-loader wagons or Smmp flat wagons
are available for carriages of special loads (big weight, unusual
dimensions).
Military consignments
We are a reliable partner not only for the Armed Forces of the
Czech Republic, but also for the whole NATO. We participate
in carriages of military equipment for manoeuvres in the
Czech Republic as well as abroad, including carriages for foreign
operations.

Carriages Organization
For carriages of any goods above weutilize various types of freight trains.
Express freight trains (Nex)
are designed for carriages of priority consignments in international traffic, in combined
transport, and in a superior system of carriages of priority goods.
Fast freight trains (Rn)
are utilized for carriages of important or priority consignments.
Empties trains (Vn)
are designed only for transport of empty freight wagons to the loading terminal.
Direct freight trains (Pn)
are trains transporting goods between formation yards, and consigner’s trains.
Pick-up goods trains (Mn)
are designed for delivery of goods to neighboring or intermediate stations, for collection
from neighboring or intermediate stations and for further manipulations.
Sidings trains (Vleč)
are used for running onto the siding branching off from the open track or to the loading
terminal with return to the station, from which they were dispatched. They can be de-
signed even for running from the station onto the siding branching off from the station,
or vice versa.
Single wagon loads
Carriages of goods in single wagons are an appropriate so-
lution for the customer who requires carriage of goods of
a small amount. Individual wagons are transported from
consignor to consignee by usual freight trains through
several marshalling yards. Informative data on the timetable
are available at www.cdcargo.cz in SPONA application.
Groups of wagons
Customers with bigger amounts of goods can utilize carriages
in groups of minimum 5 wagons at more favourable prices.
Full train loads
Full train loads represent the most suitable way of carriage
for large goods volumes, especially for bulk substrates. They
are composed of the wagons transporting only one con-
signment and running directly from consignor to consignee
without any other formation works. The consignment run-
ning time is thus significantly reduced and full train loads are
therefore highly competitive compared to road transport.
Due to simplified manipulation, carriages by full train loads
are cheaper. The only condition for this transport form uti-
lization is a sufficient amount of goods that will fill the full
train loads.
Termincargo
Termincargo term carriages provide more quality and faster
carriages of goods by means of fast freight trains between
selected stations where trains couple and uncouple groups of
wagons, for which connecting trains to other stations exist.
Carriages are often used in a so-called night jump (loading
in the afternoon/evening – running on the train during
a night – unloading in the next morning/afternoon). The net-
work of fast freight trains connecting important economic
centers of the CR works in this regime.
Detailed transport terms and conditions and the list of sta-
tions included in Termincargo system are available at
www.cdcargo.cz in the part On-line nástroje / SPONA.
System trains
A considerable part of our products portfolio are system full train
loads. These trains are our special product designed for wagon-
load carriages. They provide a fast and quality connection with
possible completion of the consignment at intermediate sta-
tions. They carry goods from more consignors or for more
consignees. Therefore, they can be utilized by all customers
who have not got sufficient load for full train loads. ADRIA,
CARPÁTHIA EXPRESS, EAST TRAIN and ITALIA belong to them.
ČD Cargo Profile 11
Adria
Adria trains belongs among the full train loads, thanks to
which our customers can transport fast and effectively their
goods from the Czech Republic (especially from the Ostrava
region) to the port Rijeka or other destinations in Croatia or
Bosnia and Herzegovina. These trains are also suitable for
transit consignments from Poland and other Baltic ports.
Only special military consignments, empty private wagons,
consignments in Interfrigo wagons, out-of-gauge loads and
live animals cannot be transported on these trains.
The most significant advantages of Adria train utilization are
possible completion of the consignments at intermediate
stations, connection of transit consignments from Poland
and Germany, and consignments monitoring throughout
their carriage. The trains are dispatched approximately twice
a week and their total running time is about 50 hours.
Carpáthia Express
Carpáthia Expres full train loads allow fast and effective con-
nection on the route of the Czech Republic – Romania. All
types of the goods can be transported on them. The excep-
tions are special military consignments, empty private wagons,
consignments in Interfrigo wagons, out-of-gauge loads and
carriages of live animals.
The main advantages of this train utilization are possible connec-
tion of transit consignments from Poland and Germany,
neutrality of carriage reservation on the train, and consign-
ments monitoring throughout their carriage. Consignments
for the trains Carpáthia Express are collected at the station
Brno – Maloměřice, into which they can be transported accor-
ding to the timetable from any station in the Czech Republic,
or from stations of neighbouring railways, e.g. from Ger-
many. The train is dispatched from Brno every day. Time of
running to the station Curtici does not exceed 24 hours.
12 ČD Cargo Profile
System trains
East Train
System EAST TRAIN started operation in 2008 and runs on the
route of Bohumín – Mosty u Jablunkova – Fiľakovo/Štúrovo -
Bihárkeresztes – Episcopia Bihor with connection to further
stations in Romania.
It arose as a response to a rapid economic development of
Romania after its admission to the European Union. Although
it is designed especially for carriages of metallurgical goods,
it can be utilized by other customers too.
Italia Express
Italia trains represent full train loads, by means of which you
can transport fast and effectively your goods from the Czech
Republic to Northern Italy and Slovenia, including the port
Koper. Italia trains are advantageous not only for carriages of
consignments from the Czech Republic (delivery to the sta-
tions of Ostrava or Břeclav), but also for transit consign-
ments from Poland and Baltic ports.
On this train you can transport almost all types of the goods.
The exceptions are only chemical products, rolling stock run-
ning on its own wheels, motor vehicles, special loads and
out-of-gauge consignments (PLM) without prior agreement.
The trains are dispatched from Ostrava up to 5 times a week.
Italia train sets are utilized not only for consignments to railway
stations, but also to the MVO (Magazzini Veneto Oreintale) ter-
minal in the town of Santo Stino di Livenza. Here ČD Cargo
offers further services in cooperation with its partners.
ČD Cargo Profile 13
ConfectioneryTatranky, the wafers and other confectionery are distributed
by train right from manufacture too. The distributing ware-
house is situated on the north-west outskirts of Prague,
nearby the urban area Tuchoměřice. Biscuits and other pro-
ducts are loaded into insulated or standard covered wagons
in the production plant in Opava, wagons loaded in another
chocolate factory are coupled with the train in Olomouc, and
the wagons are then transported to Středokluky railway sta-
tion, or to the warehouse at Tuchoměřice, by a so-called night
jump. The consignments cover the distance between Opava
and Středokluky (368 kilometers on the railway) in 13 hours,
which is the time fully comparable to truck transport.
GlassAbout 50 thousand tons of glass in various forms are trans-
ported on the railway per year. Considering the character of
goods, its packaging and placing in the wagon as well as selec-
tion of a suitable wagon series is very important in these car-
riages. In an ideal combination of these factors carriages of such
crispy goods are realized with minimum number of claims.
Glass is traditionally transported from manufacturing plants
in a wide range of products, starting with glass bottles to
various utility glass, to insulating materials of glass fibres.
On the other hand, scrap glass, which is recycled for further
glass production, is transported to these plants. Vetropack
Moravia Glass, a. s., Avirunion, a. s., UNION LESNÍ BRÁNA a. s.
or individual plants of the enterprise Bohemia Crystalex
Trading, a. s. belong to our long-standing customers.
White technologyCarriages of white technology from the producer MORA
MORAVIA s.r.o. to distributing warehouses in the Czech and
Slovak Republics belong among traditional railway car-
riages. On the manufacturing plant’s siding, branching off
from the station Hlubočky-Mariánské Údolí, cookers are
loaded into two-axle freight wagons of Hbbillns series which
hold up to 208 cookers. The wagons are then included into
regular Czech Railways’ trains and transported by a so-called
night jump to the railway station of Měšice u Prahy on the
track of Praha–Všetaty. White technology is transported in
cooperation with the Slovak carrier ZSCS to a Slovak distri-
buting warehouse at Dobrá Niva u Zvolena too.
MORA MORAVIA s.r.o. produces about 400 thousand cookers
a year, and approximately 20 % of this amount is transported
on the railway. The majority is of domestic carriages. A minor
part of export carriages, especially to Romania, states of for-
mer Yugoslavia, and Poland are realized on the railway too.
Wood chips Wood chips are loaded on the siding Stora Enso Timber
Ždírec s.r.o. at Ždírec nad Doubravou and on the siding Stora
Enso Timber Planá s.r.o. at Planá u Mariánských Lázní, and
full train loads are transported to the railway station
Hněvice onto the siding Mondi Packaging Paper Štětí a. s.,
for Biocel Paskov, a. s. to Paskov, and for customers in Austria.
580 thousand tons of the raw materials were transported by
this system in 2008.
Carriages are usually realized in full train loads composed of
16 Sgs wagons. Three special containers (Wood Tainers) espe-
cially made for wood chips carriages with respect to these
raw materials characteristic features are placed onto each
wagon. ”Wood Tainer“, container carriage system with inno-
vative turning unloading, protected by patent, belongs to
the products already developed.
All mail railway carriages in the Czech Republic are ensured
with three pairs of Nex trains that run on the route of Praha–
Ostrava and back. The trains run under the names ”Poštovní
expres (Mail Express)“, ”Poštmistr (Postmaster)“ and ”Poš-
tovský panáček (Postman)“ and are composed exclusively of
own Česká pošta´s wagons of Postw and Gbkkqs series.
The railway wagons carry mail matters between modern au-
tomated sorting nodes (Collecting Mail Node, CMN). Putting
them into service put an end to the necessity to sort mail
right in the running railway wagons. This activity was rather
staff-demanding as it required very qualified labour able to
sort fast and accurately large amounts of mail matters under
the conditions of a running railway wagon.
14 ČD Cargo Profile
Examples of the ČD Cargo carriages
Post System TrainsNowadays Česká pošta operates eight CMNs in the Czech
Republic: Praha-Malešice, Brno, Plzeň, Olomouc, Ústí nad
Labem, České Budějovice, Pardubice, Ostrava. Of these
places, only Brno, České Budějovice, Plzeň and Ústí nad
Labem do not utilize railway transport.
TyresSince November 2005 tyres – products of the company
MITAS, a. s., have been transported in wagons too. This com-
pany belongs to the leading European producers of tyres for
construction, agricultural and other off-road machinery. Till
2005 almost the whole production had been transported by
trucks from the manufacturing plant at Strašnice to interme-
diate stores and the final customers. It was up to 250 trucks
a month. Their rather difficult loading in a cramped area of
the firm, together with insufficient storage area led to the
MITAS representatives’ decision to invite tenders for ensuring
completely storage and, in fact, the whole logistics and distri-
bution of the produced products. Hardly anybody expected
that these carriages could be transferred from the road onto the
railway. However, the company THL Group s.r.o., ensuring
the whole logistic chain, evaluated Czech Railways’ offer as
the most advantageous. A group of six covered wagons of
Gbgkks series, specially dedicated to these carriages, de-
parts from MITAS’ siding every day. Loading is realized
smartly by means of special high-lift trucks. Approximately
180 tyres are loaded into each wagon.
Every day the train transports goods that would have to be
otherwise transported by eight or nine trucks. The logistic
process was rationalized, and exhaust emission was at least
partially reduced in the centre of Prague.
Precast stones The company KB-BLOK systém, s.r.o. utilizes more and more
ČD Cargo services to transport its products – vibro-pressed
concrete construction elements. Last year more than 400 rail-
way wagons loaded with these products passed through the
production plant’s gates in Postoloprty, terminating in dis-
tributing warehouses throughout the Czech Republic. The
customer utilizes advantages of carriages in full train loads.
AutomotiveOur company takes a significant share in both import and
export of passenger cars, and it is expected that after com-
pletion of construction of the plant of Hyundai at Nošovice
in North Moravia the carriages for the car industry will still
increase. Czech Railways ensures operation of sidings in two
important Czech motor works, Škoda Auto and TPCA in
Kolín.
Malt and beer Even the key product for brewing – malt – is transported on
the railway. We transport more than 3,500 wagons of this
product a year. Malts produced in the Czech Republic are di-
rected to consumers not only in Western Europe, but also on
the Balkans, to the countries of the former Soviet Union as
well as overseas. Large consumers of the Czech malt are
nowadays Polish breweries. Malt is transported in modern
wagons with an automatic self-discharging system.
Regular carriages of the goods which were previously very
typical for the railway – beer – were renewed last year. Bottled,
tinned as well as keg beer produced by Plzeňský Prazdroj for
the Scandinavian market is regularly transported in covered
railway wagons from the warehouse in Domažlice to Hallsberg,
Sweden, from where it is further distributed to its customers.
ČD Cargo Profile 15
Fuel to the airportČD Cargo interferes in air transport too, transporting tank-
wagons with fuels for planes to Ruzyně airport. We provide
almost six thousand railway wagons to the siding a year,
which represents approximately 300,000 tons of aviation
fuel.
Bohemia Express
An internal origin or destination station for Bohemia Express
container trains is Lovosice. Bohemia Express I connects
Lovosice Terminal with Duisburg, Germany. For the first time
it set out for its 700 km long journey at night from 6 to 7 Octo-
ber 2005. Nowadays three trains are dispatched on this
route a week, and they transport especially tank containers
for carriage of various chemicals and silo containers, in
which granulate for production of PET bottles and other
plastic products is transported. Since 8 June 2006 customers
have been able to utilize Bohemia Express II trains 3 times
a week to transport containers, swap bodies as well as semi-
trailers between Lovosice and the land terminal Hamburg
Bilwerder.
16 ČD Cargo Profile
Combined transport
Combined transport means carriage of goods in one trans-
port unit (container, swap body, road-trailer), while more
transport modes are utilized during transport. The major
part of the route is realized on the railway, inland waterway
or by sea without goods manipulation. An initial part (col-
lection) or a final part (delivery) is realized generally on the
road or even on the railway. Our company ensures combined
transport throughout Europe, in cooperation with other rail-
way enterprises and significant national as well as interna-
tional combined transport operators.
Combined transport types
Combined transport has two basic types of transport sys-
tems, accompanied combined transport (carriages of road
vehicles on trains composed of special low-loader railway
wagons) and unaccompanied combined transport (carriages
by means of large containers, swap bodies and road-trailers).
We also offer inclusion of railway transport into our cus-
tomers’ logistic chains, including preparation of a logistic
project. We develop, together with the customer, an analy-
sis of his transport needs, propose possible solutions, including
a quotation, and realize the project.
Inclusion of railway transport into the customer’s logistic
chains brings many advantages. Trains are scheduled accor-
ding to the customer’s individual needs. It allows customers
better planning with regard to the manufacturing process
(e.g. arrival and departure of trains according to the manu-
facturing needs); it is cost-stabile and more environmentally
friendly than road transport. One full train loads manages
to replace up to 70 truck runs, by which it contributes i.a. to
the removal of heavy freight transport from urban areas and
low-capacity roads.
Combined transport is divided into an accompanied trans-
port, so-called RoLa (carriages of road vehicles, including
drivers), and an unaccompanied transport (carriages of con-
tainers, swap bodies and road-trailers).
Projects in an accompanied combined transport are always
temporary; in many cases they replace an insufficient road
infrastructure. Submitter of an accompanied combined
transport lines can be also the state that can regulate road
traffic or protect the environment in this way. Operation of
these lines is very expensive; it means very high operational
costs on one hand, especially maintenance of special low-
loader wagons, and very low revenues on the other hand.
An unaccompanied combined transport is a more perspec-
tive system as, compared to an accompanied combined
transport, “dead” weight of a tractor is not carried and trans-
port of drivers is not necessary at the same time.
We have long-lasting experience in operation of both of
these combined transport types, nevertheless, no combined
transport line has been operated on the territory of the CR
for several years.
In an unaccompanied combined transport ČD Cargo ensures
transport of full train loads between seaports and terminals
in the Czech Republic, inland terminals between one another,
and transport of transit trains via the Czech Republic or car-
riages of individual consignments. In cooperation with com-
bined transport operators we ensure operation at average
of 150 combined transport full train loads a week. In the
theoretical graph of train running the trains have the top
priority and are maintained in the category of freight expresses.
Thanks to cooperation with neighbouring railways some
trains are operated on the basis of technical and commercial
confidence, which guarantees fast dispatching at border
transit stations. For example, running time between Prague
and Hamburg is 12 hours and corresponds to an average
transport speed of over 60 km/h.
Transport units
Containers
ISO 1 containers are transport units that can be transported
by railway, road and sea transport thanks to their unified di-
mensions. They are utilized especially in carriages between
18 ČD Cargo Profile
Combined transport
seaports and inland terminals, from which they are delivered
to the end customers by road vehicles. In transfer points the
containers are manipulated mostly with gantry cranes or reach-
stackers. Containers are stackable. Usually they are owned by
ship-owners, logistic operators or leasing companies.
Swap bodies
These transport units are designed especially for continen-
tal carriages. They differ from containers especially in their
dimensions and dead weight. However, both swap bodies
and ISO 1 containers have fastening elements mounted
identically.
Road-trailers
In Central Europe operators provide combined transport
even in specially adjusted road-trailers (semi-trailers). Com-
pared to common road-trailers they have only a reinforced
frame in the points that serve fastening for reachstackers
during manipulation in terminals. Carriages are realized in
special railway wagons with a ”pocket“. There is space for
placing semi-trailer axles at the wagons central part. These
semi-trailers are loaded onto/unloaded from the railway
wagon by means of the same handling devices as swap bodies
or containers.

Combined shuttle trains
Lovosice Terminal
Lovosice Terminal is a significant centre for the combined
transport in the Czech Republic. The terminal is designed for
dispatching of continental trains and trains to seaports.
The terminal is situated advantageously on Pan-European
Corridor IV and is a part of Lovosice city industrial zone. By
means of full train loads it offers interconnection with Ger-
man inland terminals, Scandinavia and Benelux. Besides
that, it provides services related to storage and manipula-
tion of containers and palletized goods.
Lovosice Terminal is operated by the subsidiary company
ČD-DUSS Terminál, a.s., on the principle of all customers’
neutral access to dispatching.
Road - trailers on the track
On 8. June 2006 operation of the combined transport full
train loads was opened from Hamburg-Billwerder (inland
container terminal) to Lovosice. By this train České dráhy, a.s.
started regular carriages of swap bodies and especially road-
trailers adjusted to transfer onto the railway to the Czech
Republic. The train is operated by the company Bohemia-
kombi s.r.o., and the end customer is the company Hangart-
ner Danmark A/S.
Modernization of Lovosice Terminal
In October 2006 construction works on modernization and
expansion of Lovosice Terminal started. The terminal recon-
struction has been divided into two stages, while stage is
now completed.
The terminal reconstruction is co-financed from the Euro-
pean funds through the Infrastructure Operation Program.
Total investments into the whole stage will amount to CZK
184 mil. The second stage constitutes especially the terminal
expansion and thus a possibility of manipulation with loading
units along tracks through the length of 600 m. It will enable
to dispatch full train loads without a necessity to uncouple
them.
Within the frame of construction works two warehouses
with a direct track connection inward will be modernized
and extended, their capacity will reach 2 500 m2. The ware-
houses are a part of the Lovosice logistic centre that will
thus be able to offer also other services in addition to the
container terminal ones – goods assembly and disassembly
and transfer onto road vehicles.
Lovosice Terminal
Railway stations with associated logistic services
ČD Cargo also provides other logistic services, without which
integration of railway transport into logistic chains would
not be possible. It is for instance transfer between the rail-
way wagon and the road vehicle, short-term storage, customs
clearance or consignments completion. There is a sufficient
number of areas suitable for side transfer between railway
and road vehicles in the majority of railway stations in the CR.
We offer associated services at almost thirty railway stations
all over the CR. Mostly they are county seats and important
economic localities. These stations are equipped with vari-
ous mechanisms enabling transfer of goods between the
railway and the road or warehouse.
In selected railway stations we also provide both long-term
and short-term covered and outdoor storage of various sorts
of goods, from pallet goods to bulk substrates. All covered
warehouses are equipped with a side-loading platform for
unloading of one to fifteen railway wagons. Some ware-
houses enable end unloading, which enables unloading of
containers right from the railway wagon. Platforms for road
vehicles are side as well as end.
Sidings
In addition to standard freight transport ensured by various
types of trains, our company operates railway lines and rail-
way transport on sidings – private industry tracks.
We manage to assist to our customers from the very begin-
ning of the siding construction – we provide advisory serv-
ices when designing the siding and at customer’s request we
develop technology of its operation. On a regular basis we
ensure maintenance and controls of the siding technical
conditions, inspections and measuring of tracks, switches
and crossings, controls of structure clearance and removal
of undesirable vegetation.
We ensure your siding complete operation – provision and
collection of wagons and other related services, including
lease of tracks in a connecting station or marshalling yard.
Lease of railway freight and tank wagons
Our business activities include also lease of railway freight
and tank wagons.
Offer for our customers - lease of all series of freight and tank wagons of ČD Cargo
- arrangement of lease of other companies’ wagons
- lease of wagons in and out of services for the purposes of
loading capacity utilization and storage
- consultancy and advisory services in the field of wagons
Main advantages of the wagon lease - leased wagon does not have to be returned back cleaned
after every unloading
- the lessee pays automatically decreased carriage charges
on ČD lines
- the lessee does not have to pay wagon demurrage and lay-
over charges
- the lessee holds better control over running of both loaded
and empty wagons (e.g. for logistic purposes)
- possible utilization of the wagon also for the purposes dif-
ferent from goods carriage (e.g. storage, shifts on sidings,
filming, etc.)
Charges- Lease charges are contractual. The offering price is submit-
ted on the basis of complete consideration of the whole
business case. Which factors affect the offering price?
- Required number and series of the wagons, duration of the
lease, purpose of utilization, place of operation and actual
demand-and-supply situation on the market.

Information systems
Customers utilizing our services can monitor movement of
their consignments. They can do so by means of internal
on-line systems, which are CEVIS (central wagon informa-
tion system) and CNP/CDZ (central freight office/central con-
signments database). Customers get access to the information
usually through website, e-mail or FTP.
Transport safety
Safe transport of passengers and goods is one of our priori-
ties. Carriages of dangerous goods are realized in accordance
with stipulations of the Regulations Governing the Interna-
tional Carriage of Dangerous Goods (RID) and the Govern-
ment Decree No. 1/2000 Coll., on regulations governing
carriages in public freight railway transport.
Since 1 January 2003 every firm carrying dangerous goods
on the railway has been obliged to appoint safety advisors
for carriages of dangerous goods. They are responsible for assis-
tance in preventing risks during these activities with regard
to people, property and the environment. Safety advisors are
holders of the Certificate of Approval of the Safety Advisor
for Carriages of Dangerous Goods in Freight Railway Trans-
port. This Certificate is issued by the Ministry of Transport of
the Czech Republic, Department of Railways, Combined and
Railway Transport.
Our company offers its customers an external provision of
activities of the safety advisor for carriages of dangerous
goods. Scope of his work is defined by the stipulation of Section
1.8.3 RID, e.g. control of carriage of such goods and remedy
of eventual inadequacies, control of filling out of accompa-
nying documents or elaboration of reports on accidents.
Safety advisors also offer advisory services or, for instance,
training of workers in the field of carriages of dangerous
goods.
