Introduction

The global investment fund industry has witnessed significant growth in recent years, a trend strongly anticipated to continue. This growth is fuelled by changes in the demand for regulated products offering greater investor protection. The European Union has responded with enhanced regulatory measures while, at the same time, aiming to strengthen the competitiveness of the European Funds Industry.

The Investment Funds sector in Cyprus is also growing. The modernization of the legal and regulatory framework and prompt transposition of the UCITS IV and AIFM Directives has increased Cyprus’s competitive offering. In addition, experienced and established service providers, together with favourable conditions, mean that Cyprus’ Investment Funds sector has the potential of developing into a competitive fund jurisdiction.

The SummitThe Summit is organised by the Cyprus Investment Funds Association (CIFA), endorsed by the European Fund and Asset Management Association (EFAMA), and takes place under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance of Cyprus and the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA).

The Summit will host senior expert speakers, including representatives from international law firms, EFAMA and members of international fund industry associations and fund/asset managers. The main objective of the Summit is to inform local participants about the current EU regulatory framework, identify the latest global trends and opportunities, and highlight the advantages of Cyprus as an Investment Funds hub.

Summit Audience The summit is addressed to all local stakeholders in the investment fund industry in Cyprus, including:• Investment Funds and Asset Management Companies• Fund Managers• Custodians• Fund Administrators • Investment Managers and Consultants• Legal Advisors Specialised in the Funds Industry• Accounting, Audit and Tax Advisory firms• Investment Banks, Credit Institutions and Financial Services Companies• Family Offices

10:00 - 10:20 The overall health of the Alternative Investment Fund industry: AIFs an evolving concept, exploring new asset classes: loan/ debt funds; infrastructure funds, insurance flavored products.Alternative Investment Funds – a generic name to meet a specific need. Alternative funds have always been with us, but they have soared to significant proportions at times when returns disappoint. The growth of total return and hedge fund strategies can be correlated to the long down-turn at the start of the century. Their advance into new asset classes, loan or debt funds, infrastructure, and other sectors not only assist investors in seeking return and de-correlation but put investors “inside” an investment, rather than being external participants in a trading centric market place. Returns are likely to continue to disappoint as there is a significant disconnect between what institutional investors – pension funds and the like – expect and need as return – and what traditional markets can offer. The challenge for the Alternative sector, industry, co-legislator and regulator alike will be to define that framework that will allow innovation but ensure a degree of safety, that will offer return and comply with the highest standards of investor protection. In this, Cyprus has a role to play.Christopher Stuart-Sinclair, Director – Strategy & Corporate Finance, Deloitte, Luxembourg

10:20 - 10:40 Alternative asset management 2020 - Fast forward to centre stage (PwC report)PwC predicts global alternative assets will increase to US$ 15.3tn by 2020, representing a CAGR of 10% since 2013. In the lead up to 2020, the global alternative asset management industry is expected to experience a period of transformation as players calibrate their business and operations and make technology a top investment priority. This presentation will cover the six key business imperatives for alternative asset managers and how they can implement and prosper from these imperatives, including their approach to sales and distribution, moving from institutional quality to industrial strength, optimising the location of resources and using data effectively. Olwyn Alexander, FCA, CFA, PwC EMEA Alternatives Asset Management Leader, Ireland

10:40 - 11:00 Global outlook for Investment Funds and the potential impact on CyprusThis presentation will take a brief tour of the Global trends for Investment Funds, with personal insights, in particular from Asia Pacific and Europe. 11:30 - 12:00 Panel Discussion Funds distribution: adapting to an increasingly complex regulatory environment – Private placement regimes; e-commerce; MIFID II implications for AIFs.The EU makes cross-border fund distribution simple – or so go the theory and objectives of the European Commission and Parliament. The reality, however, is somewhat different and fraught with difficulties. The panel will be looking at some of the ‘theory versus reality’ issues and discussing ways to simplify true cross-border distribution. The panel works with European governments and regulators in an effort to inform them of the role of Financial Services for EU consumers and the EU economy as a whole, lobbying for simplified regulations that enhance rather than impede both the industry and consumer protection.Chairman: Kevin Mudd, CEO of KMG Capital Markets, Member of the Executive Board of CIFSA, CyprusPanelists: Johannes Muschik, Chairman, AFPA, Austria Matthias Leidt, Head of Business Relations and Business Consultant, VOTUM, Germany Paul Stanfield, Chief Executive, FEIFA, UK Vincent Derudder, Member of the Board, ALPP, Luxembourg
