Cypress, California 90630 CLASS SPECIFICATION M.O.T. ROVER DEFINITION Under general direction, performs a variety of custodial and gardening duties and non-technical building maintenance tasks; assists in planning and coordinating cleaning, set-up, and other related duties at school sites and district facilities; may substitute in any day-shift grounds, maintenance, or transportation classification if qualified; works flexible hours as needed; performs other related duties as assigned. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES • Perform custodial functions at any site as assigned • Assist in developing site cleaning schedules for custodians and substitutes as directed • Provide training to custodians and substitutes, and ensure safety standards are implemented • Perform non-technical maintenance tasks at school and/or district sites • Organize and maintain inventory of District Office’s custodial supply rooms, assist in the

requisition of custodial supplies, and store materials and equipment in a safe manner • Operate and maintain a variety of custodial equipment including a floor stripper, buffer,

carpet shampooer, vacuum cleaner, restroom cleaning machine, and small power and hand tools; replace belts and bags of vacuum cleaners as necessary

• Operate power equipment including but not limited to lawn mowers, trimmers, edgers, and similar mechanical equipment used in grounds-maintenance work.

• Operate heavy equipment including but not limited to tractors, large power movers, forklifts, and dump trucks

• Assist in the installation/repairs of sprinkler systems • Pick up or deliver mail, food carts, furniture, equipment, and warehouse deliveries • Perform messenger services as requested by supervisor • May receive, check in, and distribute materials and supplies received in the warehouse • Drive and wash and wax school busses • Set up, tear down, and clean facilities before and after special events and meetings • Raise/lower flags • Perform emergency clean-up resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling, or illness; remove

gum and graffiti; follow District procedures for safely cleaning up pest infestations and bodily fluids

• Pick up paper and other debris from grounds and buildings; sweep or use blower to clean walkways; empty and clean waste receptacles

• Clean, scrub and disinfect restrooms; clean sinks, mirrors, and other bathroom fixtures; restock paper supplies; refill soap and other dispensers as needed and/or scheduled

• Sweep, scrub, mop, wax, oil, and vacuum floors; dust and polish furniture and other woodwork; wash windows and walls; polish metal work

• Perform minor cleaning of roof and ground drains; clean out plugged drains and drain pipes; change and/or clean air conditioning filters; change light bulbs and tubes

• Assist school sites with special needs as directed • Provide follow-up to site concerns and/or emergencies to MOT Director • Assist with emergency situations as needed, maintaining contact with the office through

District communication devices • Work overtime and/or flexible hours in emergency situations ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Positions in this class operate under the supervision and direction of the Director, Maintenance & Operations/Transportation (MOT); assists custodial staff and explains tasks to substitutes as needed; and may substitute for any absent day-shift classification in the MOT Department if qualified. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess: Knowledge of: • Cleaning materials and disinfectants in proper quantities, and equipment used in custodial

work, including carpet cleaning, stripping and waxing floors • Safety practices and preferred methods relating to the handling, storage and use of chemical

cleaning products and custodial equipment • Common tools and their uses • Safe lifting and other safety practices • Tools, equipment, materials and standard practices applying to gardening activities • Basic first aid • Provisions of the California State Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code applicable to the

operation of vehicles transporting students • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy • Basic English usage, oral and written Ability to: • Quickly assess needs and follow designated schedules when substituting • Read and interpret manuals, instructions, and specifications • Prioritize tasks and use good judgment related to emergency and safety matters

• Learn and interpret specific rules, laws and policies, and apply them with good judgment in a variety of situations

• Operate a school bus, forklift, and other automotive equipment safely, efficiently, and effectively

• Operate a variety of custodial equipment • Safely operate hand and power tools used in gardening, maintenance, and grounds keeping • Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action • Effectively lead and provide instructions to custodians and substitutes • Understand, carry out, and give oral and written directions in English • Maintain confidentiality with regards to students, staff, and community • Read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets • Maintain simple records • Meet schedules and timelines • Multitask job duties • Work cooperatively with others using tact, patience and courtesy • Work independently • Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up

and discharging students • Maintain order and discipline among students while driving a school bus • Assist with loading and unloading of bus passengers as necessary • Administer appropriate care and assistance to bus passengers as necessary Experience and Training: • Two years of increasingly responsible work in gardening and custodial services and/or

related building maintenance trades • Related work experience in a school environment is desirable Education: • High school graduation or equivalent Licenses and Certificates: • A valid, appropriate California Driver’s License (currently being a Class A or B with P

[passenger] and S [school bus] endorsements • A California Special Driver’s Certificate for Type 1 School Buses • A current Medical Examiner’s Certificate • A current First Aid Certificate issued by the American Red Cross is required if the first aid

test given by the California Highway Patrol was waived (listed as restriction “6” on the Special Driver’s Certificate)

• Forklift operator’s certification (or obtain by the end of the employment probationary period)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Positions in this classification may perform duties in both an indoor and outdoor work environment and work on varied surfaces such as tile, asphalt, carpet, cement, wood, and grass. These positions have exposure to cleaning agents, chemicals, fumes, dust and odors, electrical shock, vibration and moving mechanical equipment. These positions may have exposure to asbestos. Employees in this classification may be exposed to body fluids and blood pathogens. The noise level is usually moderate but can be high on occasion. Employees in this position may need to work flexible hours and/or overtime in emergencies The physical demands of these positions include hand and finger dexterity to operate a variety of custodial equipment and tools. Walking and/or standing for extended periods of time is required in addition to rendering assistance to disabled passengers, carrying, lifting, pushing and pulling of moderately heavy objects up to a maximum of 50 pounds, and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Bending at the waist and knees, occasional kneeling and/or stooping and balancing is also required, along with reaching overhead, below the waist, above the shoulders and horizontally. Employees in these positions occasionally climb ladders to retrieve balls, clean drains, and work from heights to replace light bulbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Hearing and speaking to exchange information is also necessary in order to interact effectively with staff. Use of a motor vehicle is required as employee may be required to respond to other school sites or the district office on occasion. . Approved: May 13, 2008
