Please remember that we are now in the storm season and that unnecessary objects on porches, yards, and carports can become projectiles in high wind conditions. Secure or remove any items which might cause damage or a safety hazard to you and your neighbors. The Fitness Center and Pool areas are always very popular with our homeowners and guests. Please abide by our rules for dress and safety at these facilities. Our new lawn crew is doing its best to keep up with the fast growing grass that all of the much needed rain has brought us. Areas that are too wet may be passed over or have to be hand trimmed. As always, should you have any concerns specific to your yard, please give Becky a call and we will try to get it resolved as soon as possible. Thank you to everyone for sharing your community for the Blair Open that was held at the Big Cypress Golf Club on June 7th. This event has raised over $100,000 over the past 8 years to the direct benefit of the “Make a Wish” Foundation. This was one of the best years ever, with proceeds exceeding $18,000. Remember: Everyone benefits from cooperation in complying with dress code and conduct policies. Your guests are your responsibility; please encourage them to act properly when they visit. Enjoy your community & have a great 4th of July !

EEmployee of the Quarter

Congratulations to Arlena Miller! Working full time in the Grill, Arlena is always busy making your favorite salad or cold sandwich. Though her main focus is salads, Arlena is also very proficient in most areas of the kitchen. She is a very loyal and dedicated employee and is always willing to go the extra mile to insure guest satisfaction. She, as well as, the entire restaurant staff were instrumental in the Grill receiving two perfect inspections from the State Board of Health. Thanks for the many things you do!

CLHA News I would like to thank our CLVA for a very impressive service they had on Memorial Day and most recently on Flag Day. Thanks to all who planned and participated. Our CERT team remains focused and active with many members renewing their CPR certification. This group of hard working volunteers, under Larry Smith’s leadership, is able to be a great service to our community in case of an emergency. Let’s hope that the storm season is calm and we do not have to call upon their expertise. Thank you for your hours of volunteer service. (And for those residents with special needs, please register your needs in the Activities Office so that CERT members can prioritize your requirements!) The CAP volunteers do a great job of keeping an eye on things in the community; however, this is the time of year when many of our neighbors are away, so it is a good idea for all of us to keep a watchful eye on friends and neighbors homes. The temperatures are high and the rains are heavy, but that doesn’t stop the hard working people of Cypress Lakes from offering many fun filled events for the residents. Coming up we have a 4th of July Barbecue and street dance offered by the Grill and Activities Office. Curtain Time Players is offering an evening out at their Mystery Dinner Theater and the Entertainment Committee has a Hawaiian themed dance planned for July, to mention a few. I hope you consider attending and joining in on the fun. Carol Holzschuh, CLHA resident

CERT Meeting

Monday, July 22 - 6:30 pm Arts & Crafts Room

Important! CERT offers the following brief overview of water safety! Residents will need an adequate water supply to “hunker down” during a hurricane (in addition to other necessary disaster supplies). Plan now to purchase1 gallon containers of “Drinking Water”. Don’t wait! Store at least a 3 day supply of water for each household member. When the hurricane is forecast: Disinfect the bathtub and fill with tap water. This water supply will be used for body wash, equipment wash and toilet flush. If necessary, you can purify water by: *heating to a rolling boil for 1 minute *using purification tablets *treating with chlorine bleach (1 gallon water to 16 drops of bleach) Do not prepare food with tap water until there is safe notification by officials.

Citizen’s Assisted Patrol

We are in the middle of summer and the 2013 Hurricane Season! It also means vacation time and many of you will be traveling. Store loose outdoor objects in a safe place during your absence in order to

protect your property, and your neighbor’s, from potential damage in a storm. Polk County Emergency Services’ website provides some helpful tips for hurricane preparedness: http://polk.ifas.ufl.edu/ Plan ahead to stay safe! ??Allan Anderson 853-9888

Thursday, July 18 10:30—11:30 am, Cypress Room

People with dementia do not mean to forget or repeat themselves. Areas of the brain are damaged, preventing the recall of information, the ability to retrace steps, follow directions or engage in activities or conversations. This program provides emotional, educational and social support for caregivers through regularly scheduled meetings. You are welcome to attend at your convenience.

From the Mailbox I hope this message reaches everyone thanking all my friends and neighbors for all the cards, gifts, food and visits in the hospital, Wedgewood Rehab and home visits. Special thanks to Sally for playing nurse during my recuperation. Everything is going well with the total hip replacement. “Warning” My stay in the hospital required a blood transfusion, and I received the blood from Tiger Woods blood bank. So, beware when I hit the golf course again.

Anne Merritt

I want to thank all for your condolences, cards, food and prayers on the passing of “My Bride” of 37 ½ years, Mary Goforth. She was a very special lady and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Wayne Goforth

I would like to thank my family and friends for your love and support to my husband, Paul Pfahler at the Memorial service. Thank you, Gwen Snook, the Sonshiners and Tom Lee and his staff for putting together a wonderful tribute to a special man. He really loved living in Cypress Lakes. Dorothy “Dory” Pfahler

We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all our Cypress Lakes friends for the many sympathy cards, e-mails and phone calls we received after the sudden passing of our son, Larry, on May 28. Larry was only forty and he and his wife, Mindy, celebrated their sixth anniversary on May 27. They had one daughter, Sabrina, who is only two years old. Larry meant so much to us and we are going to miss him a lot. Al & Louise Elkins

On behalf of the entire Entertainment Committee, I would like to thank the residents who attended the “Armed Forces” Day and donated items for the military mission. I packed 8 boxes to go to Afghanistan, Korea & Africa, plus I have surplus items for the next shipments. Thank you so much! Cheri Cornell

SEWING AND CRAFT GROUP

Got yarn?? We love yarn! Our members knit and crochet blankets, sweaters, bonnets and booties for the babies in need of Polk County. We always need yarn! Some colors are too adult for the babies, so we knit and crochet lap robes for our seniors in local nursing homes. One member uses scraps of yarn to crochet granny squares and sews them together to make blankets. Large skeins of yarn are welcome, but smaller balls of left over yarns are welcome as well. Please consider donating yarn to our group. We will use it in many ways to help those in need in Polk County.

CLVA Auxiliary News

The next meeting of the CLVA Auxiliary will be on Monday, July 1 at 6:30 pm in the Main Hall at the Clubhouse.

A heartfelt “Thank You” to all Auxiliary members who helped with the CLVA Memorial Day service, from roll call to flag bearers to refreshments. Many thanks to our entire organization for the participation and support shown, not only to the Cypress Lakes Veteran’s Association, but to the entire Cypress Lakes community. It was a beautiful service and we were proud to support our veterans.

Once again, this community has shown its generosity. The donations for the Peace River Center for Domestic Violence are much appreciated. Bins for donations will be in the Oak Room and the Fitness Center through August. A list of the most needed items is posted on the bins.

The military figurines seem to be very popular. Our sales kickoff at the Armed Forces Dance in May was a great success. If you haven’t yet seen these little guys, it won’t be long before someone is showing you one. Yes, the Coast Guard, which had been on back order, is finally in! The figurines sell for $7 each with all profits going to The Fisher House, which is located on the grounds of the VA Hospital in Tampa.

Remember…100% of all donations is for household and guest comfort. There are no administration costs taken from donations and guests are never charged for their stay. It is our hope to present their representative with a sizable check when they come to speak to our group in November.

Hot Dog and Pretzel sales are tentatively set to resume on July 16. We will offer the same great deals with a few new smiling faces.

Wondering who those people in the red shirts are? If you have a family member who has previously or is currently serving in the Armed Forces, visit our next meeting. You don’t need to be the spouse of a veteran to participate in this Auxiliary. ??Jan 816-3919

CLVA is pleased we have new residents joining our veteran’s group every month. There are lots of new faces in our community and we continue to welcome and encourage veterans to join us.

Arbor Oaks Nursing Home bingo games on June 4 were attended by Bill Davis, Larry Gross, Bob Topp and Bob Hagen. Nice job, CLVA veterans, in helping other vets in an afternoon of fun and games.

The Memorial Day service for the community was well attended by our residents. All service flags were demonstrated, tributes to deceased veterans were held, the Honor Guard was present and refreshments served. It was a wonderful tribute to all veterans. Thanks to all who attended.

August 21 will be our member appreciation day with a cookout planned. CLVA and CLVAA members and significant others are invited to attend.

CLVA & CLVAA Royal Caribbean Cruise (planned for November 17 to November 24, 2013) is still accepting reservations for our clubs members to attend. Contact Bob Hagen for details.

Bob Dragon, our ace flag sales person, has United States flags and flag poles available for purchase. Keep those flags flying as a tribute to our great country! ?Rose Mary Allen, 816-8196, Public Information Officer

MEDIA CORNER REELS OF FLICK July 2013, Volume 63

New

# #616J, Daredevil, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner: By day, an attorney toils for justice in Hell’s Kitchen. By night, he is a powerful masked vigi- lante stalking the dark streets with an uncanny radar sense that allows him to see with superhuman capabilities. #617J, Thirteen Days, Kevin Costner: For thirteen extraordinary days in October 1962, the world stood on the brink of an unthinkable catastrophe. After the discovery of Soviet weapons in Cuba, events and tension escalate between two military super powers and within the White House. #619J, Tigerland Colin Farrell: A recruit who was just released from the base stockade, joins a platoon of young soldiers preparing to ship out to Vietnam. His independence and outright defiance draws fire from his own men, as well as, commanding officers. #620, Throw Momma from the Train, Danny DeVito, Billy Crystal: Two friends have female problems, one with a nasty mother and the other with female problems. The hapless males team up to eliminate each other’s problems. Comedy. #621J What Lies Beneath, Harrison Ford, Michelle Pfeiffer: A seemingly happily married couple uncover a terrible secret…a secret so disturbing it threatens to destroy them. Are the ghostly images and mysterious voices in their minds or is it real? #622J, Rose Red with Nancy Travis: an obsessed Psychology professor commissions a team of psychics and a gifted 15-year old autistic girl to literally wake up a supposedly dormant haunted mansion, Rose Red. A Stephen King chilling tale. #614J, Gone, with Amanda Seyfried: Returning from her night job, a young woman expects to find her sister in bed. When she

doesn’t, she knows right where to look – her own past abductor. When the police seem uninterested in helping her, she sets off to find her sibling on her own. #627J, All Night Long, Dennis Quaid, Gene Hackman: A miserable family man can’t take much more. The last straw comes when he is demoted to night manager of a drug store, but life gets more interesting when he begins to date a woman who dated his son. #628J, Twice in a Lifetime, Ellen Burstyn, Gene Hackman: The disintegration of a 30-year marriage is the subject of this unsentimental drama of a husband and wife who are about to end their marriage. #629J, Twisted, Andy Garcia, Samuel Jackson: A police officer is more dedicated to enforcing the law than most of her colleagues. She feels that she has a lot to make up for…you will have to see the movie, to find out why. #625J, Snows of Kilimanjaro, Ava Gardner, Gregory Peck: While a globe-trotting journalist lies wounded in an African campsite, his wealthy wife keeps vigil. As she sits by his side, he recalls the events and the woman that led him to this situation. #646J, The Factory: When 13-year old Briony discovers a lustful letter and witnesses a sexual encounter between her older sister and a servant’s son, her confusion prompts her to finger the young man for a violent crime. Her half-truth changes their lives forever. #661J, Runaway Bride, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere: Commitment-phobic-bride-to-be, Maggie Carpenter has already left three men at the altar when sexist newspaper columnist, Ike Graham, writes an offensive, inaccurate story about her – and will get fired unless he talks to her in person. I love this one and so will you, I hope! Betty Prestin

Yard of the Month July 2013

Bill & Lorraine Coudriet of 1358 Big Cypress Boulevard have a large garden that shows off the TLC they give their gardening efforts! There are many choices of texture and color to feast your eyes on – the cool gray-greens of “Ghost Plant’ succulents, feathery lipstick plant, and stately ribbon grass. Riotous pinks and reds of bright impatiens and soothing indigo verbena blooms match the vibrant and intense foliage of a large Hawaiian Ti plant anchoring the corner of their lanai. A palm in the side bed is under planted with mature lantana and pulls you around the corner for a panoramic view. We haven’t got room to address the varieties of mulch used as a backdrop for the robust plantings. Pots spill rich blooms everywhere. What’s not to like?!

Garden Club Committee

CLIPPINGS FROM THE GARDEN CLUB

June is the time to take care of the lawn insects. Florida lawns have a number of insects which cause problems for St. Augustine grass. The most common is the Southern chinch bugs, mole crickets, white grubs and webworms, grass loopers and armyworms.

In addition to these that affect the grass, are ones living in the yard and are a nuisance by either biting people or crawling into your home. These include ants, fleas, millipedes, chiggers, sowbugs and snails.

If you suspect you have these insects, apply a soap solution (2 oz. dish soap and 1 gallon water) to a 2 foot square area. Observe for about 2 minutes; they will emerge and be easily detected on the surface. Check with the Extension Office for control recommendations, as so many chemicals have been taken out of service.

Citrus trees need to be sprayed with horticultural oil. As for the greening disease that is affecting all citrus, Bayer has a systemic liquid that is said to be getting an upper hand. This has to be used 21 days before picking fruit. Now is a good time to spray.

Aphids can cause a problem for Crape Myrtles, but a treatment of insecticidal soap is a good remedy.

Veggies to plant now include: Cherry Tomatoes, Okra, Southern Peas, Sweet Potatoes and Beans. Flowers to plant which will take the heat and humidity: Gaillardia, Gazania, Blue Sage, Periwinkle, Coreopsis and Daylily.

I just purchased two beautiful Daylilies from Sherry’s Daylilies, next to K & K Nursery.

Attention Fishermen!

Those of us who fish have a responsibility to the water, fish, birds and other property owners to pick up behind ourselves. This includes any and all fishing tackle and line because it can harm birds. They use it in nest building and it gets tangled in their feet and around their necks. Hooks can get into animal paws, as well, so be careful to clean up the area when you’re done!

What to do if your power goes out…..

In the season of summer storms, keep this information handy! For electric outages, fallen power lines or utility emergencies, call (863)834-9535 during normal business hours, and (866)834-4248 after hours. Do not report the same outage to Lakeland Electric more than once.

Keep flashlights and spare batteries in an easy-to-locate area that’s safe to enter in complete darkness. Leave the doors of freezers and refrigerators closed

except when you need an item. Limit the number of times you open the door. Do not refreeze food once it begins to thaw. Turn off or disconnect an electric range or any other

heating or cooking device you were using. Do not store items on top of a heater, range or other

cooking device if there is a potential of flooding.Leave all electrical appliances and lights turned off

except for one light in a location that will indicate the return of service. Turn off battery backup systems on computers to

conserve battery power. Keep blinds and curtains closed to help reduce the

interior heat of your home.

After your service is restored check your breaker panel or fuse box to insure that individual breakers or fuses do not need to be reset. Limit your electric use for one hour so circuits are not overloaded.

SCHEDULE COURSE MAINTENANCE

In an effort to make the golf at Cypress Lakes more enjoyable for everyone, during your next round, ask yourself what you can do to help. Repair divots and ball marks, play ready golf, stay on the cart path using 90 degree rule, rake sand traps, etc. Know, understand and play by the rules.

The USGA website www.USGA.ORG has a section on rules and decisions regarding the rules. They also have quizzes you can take to see if you understand all you know about the rules. Check it out. You may be surprised to find that you might learn something new!

We would like to welcome two new members: Terri Heimlich and Sue Dickinson. A Big Congratulations to Rae Ashford for her Hole in One on June 3. It was on hole #6 on the North Course. Way to go Rae! You may declare your ball unplayable at any place on the course EXCEPT when the ball is in a water hazard. You are the sole judge as to whether your ball is unplayable.

YOU HAVE 3 OPTIONS (One stroke penalty for each option)

1. Play a ball at the spot from which the original was last played. 1

2. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole (yellow area noted). 2

3. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped. 3 Note: If your ball is in a bunker, and you elect to use option 2 or 3, a ball must be dropped in the bunker.
