Cycle through Vincent van Gogh’s world335 km of cycling enjoyment divided into 5 unique routes

The way of life and the Brabant countryside formed the basis of Vincent van Gogh’s work (1853-1890).

His love of simple folk, the countryside and the peasant farmland all started in this beautiful province. These essentially Brabant themes form a common thread throughoutVincent’s 800 paintings and 1100 drawings which can nowadays be admired all over the world.

Vincent was born and grew up in Brabant, it was here that he found inspiration, made his first sketches, developed into an artist and produced his first masterpiece. Discover the Brabant countryside where Van Gogh lived and worked, the countryside that inspired him and which found a place in his heart.

Cycle, listen to the stories and enjoy Vincent van Gogh’s birthplace. Vincent’s Homeland.

The Van Gogh cycle route takes you through five communities which have a unique bond with Vincent van Gogh. You can enjoy the Brabant countryside at its best and visit the locations that inspired Van Gogh. The Van Gogh cycle route follows the national cycle route network and can be identified by the Van Gogh route signs. The total length of the route is 335 kilometres, divided up into five shorter sections.

How the Van Gogh cycle routeis organisedThe Van Gogh cycle route is incorporated into the existing cycle route network. There is a Van Gogh cycle route sign below each network sign.

Follow the Van Gogh route signs from one numbered intersection to the next. Between intersections you should follow the cycle route network signs.

The entire Van Gogh route is a circular route of 335 km. Five shorter routes have also been marked out around the five Van Gogh heritage locations.

If you want to deviate from the Van Gogh route you will find panels along the way giving a summary of the route and including a map of the cycle route networkin each particular region.

Leave your commentIf there is something not quite right about the route signage, if this leaflet is sending you in the wrong direction or if a sign has become almost illegible, please send us your comments or suggestions at [email protected]. They will be very much appreciated.

“As regards the exhibition in Brussels, why it doesn’t leave me indifferent is because I’ll have a few paintings from here which, notwithstanding that they were made in a very different region, have remained completely and utterly as if they were painted in Zundert, say, or Kalmthout, and I believe could also be understood by people who don’t, as they say, know anything about paintings. And so people could say that it would perhaps have been simpler had I just stayed quietlyin North Brabant - but that’s as it is, and what is a body to do about it?”

ZundertVincent van Gogh’s birthplace

Zundert is of course the place where Vincent van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in a small house on Markt 26, one year to the day after his brother, who had also been named Vincent, was stillborn. It was a difficult start to what would later prove to be a turbulent life.

Zundert is also where Vincent spent his childhood years. The residents of Zundertsoon realised that Vincent was ‘different’. He was a reticent and introvert boy. A protestant boy in a predominantly catholic village. Someone who for years was educated at home. He was also conspicuous by his red hair. This is where Vincent van Gogh’s character was to a large extent determined.

TilburgThe first drawing lessonsIn 1866, the 13 year old Vincent van Gogh moved from Zundert to Tilburg to attend lessons at the brand new State High School. It was the only such school in Noord-Brabant. Vincent lodged at a boarding house on ’Haringseind’, now known as Annaplein, where the Korvelseweg starts.

Vincent had drawing lessons at school from Constant Huijsmans, an artist who was very well known at the time. He was a painter, drawer and writer of books on art education. Master Huijsmans paid much attention in his lessons to drawing in depth. It’s a strange fact that Vincent had a lot of difficulty with this in his later works. Half way through the second year Vincent gave up school. He went back to his parents’ house in Zundert. The reason for his departure is not known. Vincent was recognised as being ‘a good student’.

History and the newest technology come together in Vincent’s Art Room. The young Van Gogh attended school in the former palace of King Willem II. Visit the reconstructed art room and experience how he received his first serious drawing lessons. You can then try it yourself in the digital drawing room and discover your own artistic talent. Etten-LeurThe start of a careerVincent van Gogh visited Etten regularly between 1875 and 1882, mostly when he needed money. At that time his father was a preacher there in the Dutch Reformed Church. In April 1881 Vincent came back destitute to the West Brabant village. His parents took him in reluctantly, as he was not an easy person to live with. But this time he had a plan. The spirits had moved him and he wanted to become an artist.

This ambition brought some direction into the life of the 28 year old Vincent. Etten became the turning point. He stayed in the parsonage next to the church for nine months. He also set up his first studio there. He made hundreds of sketches and drawings. A large number of these can be found in museums all over the world.

Vincent’s ambition can be seen and felt in the Van Gogh Church. A number of themes allow you to experience Vincent’s story.

Why did he come to Etten, what was he looking for and what did he find here? Learn all about his struggle to become an artist, his love of the countryside, for the simple people and for his cousin Kee Vos. His heartbreak and an explosive argument with his father. A compelling and vivid story, not to be missed.

Breda Breda can be considered the birthplace of the Van Gogh family. Vincent’s grandfather was a preacher at the Grote Kerk church and the Royal Military Academy in Breda. Vincent regularly visited the Prinsenhage district of town where his rich Uncle ‘Cent’ had an art gallery. Behind the Princenhaags Museum, Haagweg 334, is the Haagveld cemetery where Uncle Cent and his wife, and grandmother and grandfather Van Gogh are buried. You can combine this with a visit to Etten-Leur and Zundert.

NuenenYou’ll never be closer to Van GoghStand where Van Gogh once stood, see what he saw and painted. Then and now. It’s already 130 years further on, yet still everything is visible, tangible and within reach.Walk or cycle in Vincent van Gogh’s footsteps. That’s something you can really do in Nuenen! What makes it unique is that the stories about Van Gogh, his letters and his paintings all merge together in the same place.

Hear stories about him in the Vincentre museum and read stories about Nuenen as it was when he lived and worked here from 1883 to 1885. Get to know him as a person and see him develop to become a world-famous artist. Then go outside where no fewer than 22 locations remind us of Van Gogh; 14 of these are buildings painted or sketched by him. The others are statues or buildings with a particular relevance. There is even a special cycle path. Despite there being no original paintings, our senses are aroused: you’ll never be closer to Van Gogh.

Immerse yourself in Van Gogh’s mind. What does that mean? How does it feel? This is the challenge for 7 designers in the imposing villa Nune Ville (in front of the Vincentre museum). It was here that Vincent and Margot Begemann had a love affair that ended in a dramatic way. Vincent had his own way of thinking about things. That applies to the 7 current designers. They will enter into a relationship, an affair with Vincent. What brings them together in ‘alternative thinking’ will result in the designs for the rooms in this lovely house: The Vincent Affair. Experience the adventure and have your own affair with Van Gogh.

’s-HertogenboschThe original works

Vincent van Gogh grew up in the 19th century in a protestant preacher’s family in which a love for the countryside was important. Vincent’s lifelong love for anything that grew or blossomed can be traced back to the Brabant countryside. Despite the 19th century being a period of tentative progress, Vincent was primarily fascinated by the traditional peasantlifestyle. That’s what he tried to transferonto his canvasses.

Vincent’s father was the priest in Helvoirt for several years. Cycle to Helvoirt from ’s-Hertogenbosch, Tilburg or Nuenen.

It is the largest walled city in the Netherlands and its medieval centre is one of the oldest and best preserved town centres. It goes without saying that there is plenty to do and to see in this lively city. How about the medieval Sint Jan Cathedral, the Dragon Fountain, the statue of Jeroen Bosch (Hieronymus Bosch), the unique Binnendieze underground canal system or the Verkade Fabriek cultural centre?

The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde cycle path

Light, art, innovation and design come together.Vincent van Gogh was born in Brabant. Nowhere else. Nowhere else can you cycle past the places that inspired Van Gogh and which in turn have inspired others… Right up to this very day!

Designer, artist, entrepreneur Daan Roosegaarde is a good example of this. In Eindhoven, just on the edge of Nuenen there is a unique cycle path inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night. Never before was a cycle path so inspiring. The cycle path is 600 metres in length and is one of the highlights of the Van Gogh Cycle Route that links the Brabant heritage locations.

Luminous pearls in the asphalt recharge during the day and give out light in the evening. This combines with fragments from the famous painting to produce a subtle play on light and poetry.

Discover Van Gogh’s amazing world here!

Studio Roosegaarde

” The sky was grey but the evening star shone through the clouds, and now and then other stars were visible too.” (Vincent to Theo, Etten 8 April 1877)
