Some of the route is on roads. Cyclists should only use pavements when there are signs showing it is shared use.

West Park to Leeds City Centre Cycle route

This carefully signed cycle route has been developed by Leeds City Council and Sustrans (www.sustrans.org.uk). It uses quiet roads, cycle tracks and other facilities to provide routes through this densely populated area.

• Provides routes from the heart of student living to the Leeds Met Headingley Campus and Leeds Met and University of Leeds city campuses. • Provides safe routes to Lawnswood School.• Improves links from the Hyde Park and Burley Park areas to the city centre.• Provides a number of junction improvements which help create a better cycle network.• Future extension to Cookridge planned.

In general• Always abide by the Highway Code. • Ride to your own ability.• Look all around when making a manoeuvre and signal clearly. •In daytime wear bright clothes. At night use lights and reflective clothing. • Be aware that most tracks away from the road are unlit. • Consider wearing a helmet (conforming to BS EN 1078). • Consider your lane position; a metre from the kerb is advised when cycling straight ahead, but it may be helpful to occupy the middle of the lane when approaching a junction.• Watch out for motorists turning across you at side roads, particularly when filtering past traffic. This is a common cause of accidents in Leeds. Pay particular attention to large vehicles whose drivers may not be able to see you easily. Shared-use pathsTake care when passing pedestrians and remember that they may be inattentive, or anxious around cyclists. Some may be unable to react quickly or see or hear your approach. Let pedestrians know you are there and allow plenty of room. Be ready to slow down and stop if necessary. Be considerate.

Destinations along the way

Leeds Met Headingley CampusIncludes public evening courses, Carnegie sports facilities including tennis courts, swimming pool and football pitches. Catering facilities (Metceno, Tiki Coffee bar) and the Students Union Bar.

Beckett ParkThis park, a mixture of woodland and grassed open space includes public tennis courts, a skate park and a playground. The Kirkstall Brewery to Leeds Met Headingley Campus cycle route also runs through the park.

SchoolsThe route provides access to Lawnswood School from part of its catchment area in Woodhouse, Burley Park, Hyde Park and Headingley. Cycle facilities provide safe cycling over several difficult roads and junctions.

Woodhouse MoorThis leafy Victorian Park has numerous facilities such as bowling, skate park, tennis courts and allotments and is perfect for an afternoon stroll or picnic.

University of LeedsThis is the main campus of the University and boasts numerous cycle parking locations. The Velocampus Bike Hub also provides cycle hire and maintenance facilities for students and staff of both Universities. See www.leeds.ac.uk/velocampus

Leeds Met University City Campus The Rose Bowl (opposite the Civic Hall) and surrounding university buildings have a large amount of cycle parking and the Rose Bowl has a food court open to the public.

Leeds Core Cycle Network

Leeds City Council is developing a network of cycle routes in Leeds that will improve conditions for cyclists and encourage cycling as a way of getting around.

Routes will be signed and use a combination of cycle lanes, tracks, quiet roads and junction improvements to link to Leeds city centre, housing, schools, employment sites, parks and greenspace, and the wider bridleway and cycle route network.
