There are a few factors that lead to cybercrime activities. Parental influence is a great

factor in the upbringing of any individual. It has been proven from psychological studies that

neglected children and those who are victims of parental abuse are more likely to commit crimes

later in their lives. Poor parenting can happen for different reasons and will manifest in a variety

of ways. Physical abuse shows a lack of coping skills on the parent’s part. Exposing children to

violent, illegal or sexual behavior shows lack of insight into appropriate parenting. Excessive

criticism or demeaning children are signs of having poor parenting skills. Learning good

parenting skills will help children be happier and have a greater chance of success in life. There

are many support options for parents, including classes, support groups and community outreach

programs. According to PubMed, one of the most common reasons for lack of parenting skills is

low socioeconomic status. Parents living at or below the poverty line often have less access to

parenting resources. There is a larger chance of having inadequate healthcare if you’re struggling

financially. Teen parents might have a hard time developing parenting skills, as they may not

have the emotional or financial support to effectively parent. Young parents can be more

immature and less capable of making the sacrifices sometimes required of parents. Parents that

have substance abuse issues might be more likely to make bad parenting choices.

Other than that, cybercrime is caused by peer influence. Mostly people spend more time

with peer whether at school or workplace compare to their time spent with their family. Firstly,

they want to be liked, to fit in and to be accepted. This usually happens to the new students at

school. Since they do not have any friends yet, they try to join any groups so that they will not be

alone. Once they are accepted into a certain group, they have to do what the other members do. If

they do not receive the challenges that are put in front of them, they could be banned from the

group. They are also afraid that they might be looked down upon or made fun of by other person.

Most of the bullies look for any lonely person. It is easy for them to bully the person and made

fun of the person as the person is weak when he or she is alone. Besides that, teenagers are

always curious to try something new whatever they see from their friends’ activities. It is normal

for teenagers that already reach puberty. They feel like they are not up to date if they do not do it.

For them, peers understand their needs better than their parents. This is because they are in the

same range of age as their peers and of course their likes are almost the same. It is also in process

to free them from parental control. Next, these friends are the only ones that they have even

though they are not the suitable friends for them. It is like a kind of friendship.

Drugs and alcohol abuse is also one of the factor that cause crime. The urge to commit

crime to support a drug habit definitely influences the decision process. Both drugs and alcohol

impair judgment and reduce inhibitions, giving a person greater courage to commit a crime.

Deterrent such as long prison sentences have little meaning when a person is high or drunk.

Drugs and alcohol abuse may cause the drinker or drugs offenders lost their judgments to do

something because they take it in big amount and it makes them drunk. These are the situation

where they will commit crime. In United States, one survey shows that about 67% of child-

beating cases, 41% of forcible rape cases, 80% of wife-battering, 72% of stabbing and 83% of

homicides, either the attacker or the victims or both had been drinking. A case at Muar, Johor

which a man attack 30 children and 4 teacher at Pusat Asuhan dan Didikan Serikids and take

them as his prisoner was doing that crime because he was hallucination cause of drugs abuse.

Nowadays, drugs dealers trying to deliver their ‘things’ to the buyer. But, they have a problem

with the security check, especially at the airport. That is why they using others to do the jobs.

Drugs mules always become the victims to become drugs dealers. This is also a crime that needs

to be handling seriously and we need to fight the crime. Only this year, about 315 people are

arrested because they become drugs mules. Drugs always involve gangs. They are very cruel and

will not only sitting down when someone or other gangs try to interrupt their business with

drugs. Just like what had happen at Mexico, where a man and a woman are found hanging on a

bridge with a blackmail note on the body. They give warning to people not to reveal any

information about drugs dealers on the internet. This is one of the scariest crimes happen involve

drugs. For sure, drugs and alcohol abuse is the factor of crime happen.

Another factor that contributes to the cybercrime is the level of income and education.

The educational level and the amount of income are much related between each other.

Nowadays, the amount of income is very crucial as to support the life cost since it increase

exponentially by times. For those who get low income, they try to find out the good way to

improve their income level as they wish to have a good life style. However, because of their poor

educational backgrounds, they have done mostly low wage jobs but only gaining small amount

of income. They have to make a choice either long-term low income or the prospect of profitable

crime. It is impossible to them for gaining further education, since the classes to attain can be

expensive and consuming lot of times. Therefore, some of them cheated others through the cyber

medium which they take it as a shortcut for them to get high income. By using online business

Page 4: Cyber Crime Essay

application such as eBay, mudah.com, lelong.com and so on they act such a very professional

online businessman by register the fake account. Through those website, they pretend to offer the

online customer the certain item with the lower prices which if we buy with the normal price, we

cannot get as low as offered by them. Because of the very attractive offer, without thinking

wisely, the customers accept it and paid for the item they like. Usually the will bank in the

payment to the seller account and as the seller noticed, he will give the customer post tracking

number for the item. When the customer checked the tracking number, they noticed, it is fake

and realized they have been cheated since the sale item does not exist.

Besides, this cybercrime does not happen because of the trick created by the criminal, but

it also due to the low education level of the customer. It also becomes the main factors why

cybercrime spread out nowadays. As the low educated people become the main victim, they also

the sources of contagion for this criminal happen. Normally, they are easily cheated through the

advertisement in the newspaper, websites, magazines and so on. Most of them become the

victims because they are searching the way to improve their life style. The most common trick

use by the criminal is by offering multilevel marketing and also part-time job. For the part time

job, it is spread out silently in our daily life. The criminal will offer the easy job which people

can handle it even they at home. They offer the high income for the easy job for the short-term.

For those who are interested with the offer, they are asked to pay a few amounts as the fee to join

the activities. After have done their jobs, they really get the luxury payment but just for a few

times. However, most people do not realized it is kind of cybercrime since it is very tricky since

most cases are unreported because lack of awareness among the victims. That is why we need to

have the knowledge about Information and Technology (IT) as to avoid ourselves from being the

victims of cybercrime such reported on 24 July 2011 in page 13 of Berita Minggu, ‘Buta IT

punca jadi mangsa’. The effects of violence on television what has our society come to these

days. Everywhere we look, violence is present; in the streets, back alleys, school, and even at

home. Even if one might be a pacifist, violence will seep its way into our homes through the

television. Does violence on television cause children to be violent? There are many people that

say this is true but there are also many people who believe to be false. We live in an era where

both parents are often working and children have more unsupervised time so it’s easy for them to

watch different kinds of shows without parental consent. The people who say violence on

television does cause children to be violent site psychological research. They say four major

Page 5: Cyber Crime Essay

effects of seeing violence on television are they becoming "immune" to the horror of

violence; they gradually accept violence as a way to solve problems; and they imitate the

violence they observe on television. Perhaps the most important way to prevent children from

watching television violence is to stop it where it starts. The parents should step in and turn the

set off when a violent program comes on. The parents are the child’s role models from which he

learns. If they can learn at an early age that violence on television is appalling, then they can turn

the set off for him when they are older. Education should start in the home.

In the nutshell, cyber crime are caused by few factors including poor parenting skills,

peer influence, drugs and alcohol, income and education and television violence. Therefore, all

society should work together in order to reduce the statistic of cyber crime.
