CYCLINGFORMATTIME TRIAL The time trial event begins with a standing start. Athletes compete against the clock to complete a set distance in the fastest time. Competition distances are 7 or 12 kilometers. Distance is based on type of bicycle and athlete classification.

ROAD RACE The cycling competition includes handcycle, recumbent, upright and tandem upright bicycles. Competition distances are 10, 20 and 30 kilometers. Distance is based on type of bicycle and athlete classification.

FAST FACTS

Cyclists who have limited use of their lower body use HANDCYCLES. Handcycles allow athletes to use their arms to power the bicycle as opposed to their legs. Most handcycle athletes compete in a RECLINED POSITION while others KNEEL.

Visually impaired cyclists using TANDEM BICYCLES led to the development of Paralympic cycling. It debuted as an event at the 1988 Paralympic Games in Seoul.
