American universities are some of the best in the world, therefore, the competition to attend them has dramatically increased. For students to be successful applicants, they need to excel in academics, leadership and a variety of extracurricular activities. We believe all children can be successful if they have proper guidance, are allowed to express themselves, and are given the right opportunities and experiences. For each child, we design a customized road map to best help them explore and fulfill his or her potential. Not only do we help students achieve the best scores and grades, but we also encourage them to pursue experiences that will stimulate their growth. The ideal time to start planning for success is 8th or 9th grade.

The focuses of our approach are customization, one-on-one interactions, and communication. Schools want to know students as unique individuals, therefore we help students to explore their interests, develop critical thinking abilities, and grow their knowledge base. With our founder’s background in science, art and technology, we can expose students to a diversity of fields and experiences. Also, with the high cost of attendance, if students know their interests early, then they can better use their college’s resources to help them succeed. The appropriate classes and internships will make the student attractive to graduate schools and future employers.

In our approach, we emphasize one-on-one interactions because we have found that an hour of one-on-one tutoring is as effective, if not more than, three to five hours of group class. With the amount of studying and extracurricular activities that students do, more effective use of time is essential. Also, one-on-one is the best for teaching innovative and critical thinking skills. Current high school curriculum is more focused on memorization instead of critical engagement. Developing such abilities will be useful to students in developing their intellect, as well as in preparing for college classes where participation in discussions is often a critical part of the grade.

Throughout the whole process, we will actively seek communication with students and parents. With everyone informed and on the same page, we can accomplish more. By communicating frequently, students will feel more comfortable in opening up about their concerns and goals. About Yan Yan Mao, FounderMFA CCA, BA cum laude Harvard, AA high honors CSM

Yan Yan has extensive experience providing academic consulting services, with a focus on test preparation and college applications. She has worked for education consulting companies in Boston, Massachusetts, Beijing, China and Silicon Valley, California, as well as providing private educational consulting services to high-achieving students all over the world. Yan Yan relocated to her hometown of Shanghai in September 2015 to provide students in China with access to the same level of individualized test preparation, academic planning, and college counseling that is available to the top tier of students in the United States.

Yan Yan received a Masters of Fine Arts degree from California College of the Arts in San Francisco (one of the top schools in the United States for fine arts, design and architecture). There, she was selected as a Fellow for the Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards.

Prior to attending CCA, Yan Yan graduated from Harvard cum laude with a B.A. in Visual and Environmental Studies while completing the Harvard pre-medical curriculum and learning two languages. Yan Yan’s Harvard senior thesis received the Thomas T. Hoopes and the Rudolph Arnheim prizes as the most outstanding thesis project. While at Harvard, Yan Yan discovered her passion for education and began tutoring fellow classmates and advising high school students on the college application process.

At 18, Yan Yan received her high school diploma from Hillsdale High School as the valedictorian, the same week she received an Associate in Arts degree with high honors as the youngest graduating member from College of San Mateo.

With her passion for education, experience in science, art and technology, and dual cultural background, the Shanghai-born and American-raised Yan Yan is ideally suited to provide individualized service to students from different cultures.
