Meet Our CWURA Graduate Scholarship Winner for 2016-2017

CWURA awarded the graduate scholarship this year to Corey Brumbaugh, who is pursuing a graduate degree in biology. Originally from Benton City, Oregon, Corey came to Central in 2012 after completing his associates degree at Columbia Basin Community College. Corey completed his BS in Biology at Central in 2015 and is now in his second year of his graduate studies. Corey’s graduate research is focused on looking at different factors that influence the behavior and distribution of a small desert frog called a spadefoot toad, Spea intermontana.

Corey will be looking at the effects of climate change on the metamorphosis rate and burrowing behaviors of the spadefoot toad.

The CWURA Graduate Scholarship is made possible by generous contributions from retirees and friends. Thank you to all who have supported students like Corey through their gifts. If you are interested in becoming a donor, or would like more information on this program, visit our website at cwu.edu/retirement-association.

Twenty-one golfers gathered at the Ellensburg Golf Club on September 9 to celebrate the end of an era at our 21st Annual Senior Open Golf Tournament. The CWU Senior Open was initiated in 1996 by co-directors, Don Schliesman and Jean Putnam. The first gathering was held on Tuesday, July 23, 1996, a year before it was officially called an “annual” golf tournament. The final golf team tournament winners were Pat Lacey, Phil Backlund, Jeff Harada, and Gary Smith. For his last year, Don Schliesman was on the team with the least putts of 12, along with Jason Roundy and Beth Smith. After the golfers had completed their nine holes, they were joined by additional guests for the annual luncheon. Door prizes were provided by CWU Athletics, with gifts such as a CWU water bottle, scarves, t-shirts, and a variety or fruits and vegetables to remember our early years. CWURA thanks Don and Jean for creating this enjoyable event and running it for the last 21 years.
