BACKGROUND

A sporting competition bringing together the members of the BritishEmpire was first proposed in 1891

The first Games were held in 1930 in Canada.

The name was changed to British Empire and Commonwealth

Games in 1954, to British Commonwealth Games in 1970 andassumed the current name of the Commonwealth Games in 1978.

It involves athletes from Common Wealth of Nations.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games are thenineteenth Commonwealth Games, and the ninthto be held under that name. The Games are

scheduled to be held in Delhi,I

ndia between 3October and 14 October 2010. The games will bethe largest multi-sport event conducted to date inDelhi and India generally, which has previouslyhosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The

opening ceremony is scheduled to take place atthe Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi.

The organisation was beset by delays:

in January 2005, the Indian Olympic Associationvice-chairman Raja Randhir Singh expressed

concern that Delhi was not up to speed in formingand organising its games committee and, followinga 2009 Indian Government report showing twothirds of venues were behind schedule.

The OG head, Suresh Kalmadi now says thatpreparations could have been better if the venueshad been given earlier.

SURESHKALMADI-The criminal

or the victim? Suresh Kalmadi, the Chairman of

Commonwealth Games OrganisingCommittee.

On Friday, Aug 6, refused to resign overallegations of corruption in the preparationfor Games.

While addressing the media in New Delhi,

Kalmadi said, "I will quit only if the PrimeMinister asks me to. Everything is onschedule and we will deliver the Games."

Cleaning up the areas involved in the games

Landscaping and de-infecting those areas. Athletes and visiting parties to be given invitation to see

the country. Expenses of the same to be borne by theOG.

To take to the motto of Atithi Devo Bavah and thusbehave as generous host.

Holding a grand welcome party and opening ceremony ofthe games.

OG and the involved politicians should publically acceptthe faults once the games are over.
