lot 5 Legendary BurgundyEver since the 14th century when Duke Philip the Bold denigrated “vile and disloyal Gamay” and praised Burgundian Pinot Noir in its stead, issuing decrees to protect it, wine lovers have always held a special place in their heart for these dry, elegant wines . Maybe it’s the independent spirit of Burgundy’s winemakers, or maybe it’s simply the wine’s sensuality, but we suspect that people who adore Burgundy are a little more discerning, and more likely than others to live life to the fullest . (Hey, they didn’t call him Philip the Bold for nothing) .

This lot of eleven superstar Burgundies includes a 1972 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti worth more than many people’s automobiles . lot 7 Domaine Drouhin Oregon 2014 OREGON WINE AMBASSADOR

One couple will enjoy a full season of Domaine Drouhin Oregon, from seeing the vines’ first green shoots in the spring, though the excitement of harvest in the fall .

The Drouhin family’s winemaking roots run deep, having taken hold in Burgundy’s best vineyards more than a century ago . In 1987, Robert Drouhin was invited to participate in the first International Pinot Noir Celebration, and on that trip, he decided to purchase land in the Dundee Hills . Where there had only been Christmas trees and wheat, the Drouhin’s began planting their first vineyards in Oregon . At the same time, Robert asked Véronique to be the winery’s new winemaker, and her brother Philippe Drouhin took responsibility for viticulture . In 1988, DDO produced its first vintage, from purchased grapes, and in 1989 built its landmark, four-story gravity flow winery . The rest is history .

The winner of this package will get to know Domaine Drouhin year-round!

First of all, you'll go to the head of the line to become a member of Domaine Drouhin Oregon’s wine club, including an allocation of the Pinot Noir Louise, for which there is now a 3 1/2 year waiting list . Taste and dine with a basketball icon and revisit nine Oregon vintages of wine that have never been available for purchase!

Gregg Popovich, Coach of the San Antonio Spurs, is famous for winning NBA Championships and his laconic wit and wisdom . A serious wine enthusiast (he had to build a separate building to house his wine cellar), he has long been a part owner in A to Z Wineworks and, for his own personal and charitable use, every year A to Z crafts a special blend for him called Rock & Hammer . It has never been for sale and there has never been a vertical tasting of these wines . As Harvey Steiman asked in the Wine Spectator almost eight years ago, “Will it ever be available to the public?” No, but you could be one of the lucky few beyond Pop’s circle who will get to taste them all from 2004-2012 .

The name Rock & Hammer comes from a Jacob Riis’ quote in the Spurs’ facility: “When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it . Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two and I know it was not that blow that did it but all that had gone before .”

lot 23 California “Cult”We had a lot of work tracking these lovelies down, but we did it for you . Yes, this lot contains 20 bottles of nearly impossible to find California Cult Cabernets .

Case in point, the 2004 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon . The Wine Spectator says, “Impeccably balanced, intense and complex, with a mix of savory currant, loamy earth and firmly structured tannins . Tightens up on the finish, where the tannins clamp down, yet the finish is long and persistent .” The tasting notes of those who’ve been lucky enough to sample this wine include descriptors like “sexy,” “luscious,” and “spectacularly memorable .”

And the 2006 Harlan Estate Napa Valley? Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave it 96 points and said, “Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by classic aromas of crème de cassis, melted licorice, smoked meats, burning embers, and graphite . It has thrown off some of the tannic clout it displayed last year, revealing great balance . A candidate for ‘wine of the vintage’ .” And this is a magnum!

Every wine in this remarkable lot can be described with superlatives, but let’s feature just one more, the 2010 Bryant Family Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon . Grenon’s subjects are primarily women expressing emotions ranging from vulnerability, sadness, and apprehension to confidence, strength, and resolve . Classic Wines Auction couldn’t happen without the tireless support of some of the region’s most generous individuals . Roger Hinshaw, Bank of America President, exemplifies this sort of open-hearted, dedicated individual, and that is why we are awarding him the 2014 VINI Award .

Each year since 1992, the Classic Wines Auction has presented the VINI Award to individuals who have used their enthusiasm and support of viticulture and passion for the community to increase the success of Classic Wines Auction events . Roger Hinshaw has served on the Classic Wines Auction Board for the last nine years and has been involved with the Auction for more than 15 years .

The VINI Award dinner this year will be held at the spacious and inviting tasting rooms at Hawks View Cellars in Sherwood . Since 1991, Hawks View Cellars has been a small fami-ly-owned winery in Oregon’s Chehalem Mountain range crafting limited production wines from low input viticulture and detailed winemaking .

From the winery’s beautifully landscaped patio and lawn, a ring of five Cascade peaks forms a dramatic backdrop to the sweeping view of Oregon’s wine country . Meyers Leonard’s early life was largely defined by family tragedy . When he was six years old, his father James, a golf pro, was killed in a freak bicycle accident . His mother Tracie, had been largely housebound since her husband’s death, sidelined by an old horseback injury and subsequent disc surgery that left her with crippling pain . When he was in second grade, young Meyers gained a surrogate family that helped him develop the strength, skill, and discipline needed to enter professional sports .

The children who take part in this package will start their special day with one hour clinic of drills, tailored to the specific age group, from the Trail Blazers coaching staff and Meyers Leonard . After the fun and learning, they’ll do a Q and A, pictures and autographs with Meyers .

These children will never forget this day, but just to make sure, they’ll each take home an autographed jersey and basketball from their new favorite player, Meyers Leonard .
