Outcome Objectives

Develop a common understanding of Learning Targets (speak the same language)

Identify and deconstruct the parts of an effective Learning Target

Adding Industry Strategies

Page 3: CVUHSD LEARNING TARGETS Adapted from Marzano, R. (2000)

Make Learning Targets Clear

What specifically are we hoping that students will learn and be able to do?

Make Learning Targets Clear…

…to students.

In order for students to benefit from the results of formative assessment, it is imperative that students understand their goals in an academy class.

Make Learning Targets Clear

Students actually learn more when they understand how their work will be evaluated. They accomplish more when they understand the outcome that is expected.

Example Objective

Given the parts of an objective and sample objectives,

teachers will formulate in writing an

objective based on a specific content standard,

by writing their own objective

so that teachers will become ethical leaders.

Objective: Part I

Determine conditions What Industry-related materials (i.e.,

passage to be read, problems to be solved, experiment to observe, etc.) will you provide?

Given the parts of an objective and the Linked learning Behaviors of Learning and Teaching, teachers will formulate in writing an objective based on a specific content standard, by writing their own objective so that teachers will become ethical leaders.

Objective: Part II

Determine standard and level of cognition What is the content of your lesson? What do you want the learner to be able to do?

Given the parts of an objective and the Linked learning Behaviors of Learning and Teaching, teachers will formulate in writing an objective based on a specific content standard, by writing their own objective so that teachers will become ethical leaders.

Make Learning Targets Clear…

TARGET LEARNING CHECKLIST

Does the learning objective stem from a course goal or objective?

Is the learning objective measurable?

Does the learning objective target one specific aspect of expected performance? Is the learning objective student-centered?

Does the learning objective utilize an effective, action verb that targets the desired level of performance based on DOK?

Do learning objectives measure a range of educational outcomes?

Does the learning objective match instructional activities and assessments?Does the learning objective specify appropriate conditions for performance? Is the learning objective written in terms of observable, behavioral outcomes? Is the learning objective written in terms of observable, Linked Learning outcomes?

Page 23: CVUHSD LEARNING TARGETS Adapted from Marzano, R. (2000)

Objectives in the Classroom

Given a word problem dealing with 3D Modeling, students will demonstrate their understanding of the 3D Models by completing the problem and creating the 3D model so that students will be able to become collaborative problem solvers.

After discussing “Juvenile Justice” in small groups, students will apply knowledge of the laws regarding teens who commit murder by writing a 200-word essay analyzing the laws of the various states so that students will be able to engage in deep critical thinking.

Make Learning Targets Clear

Having a clear goal—or target that is geared toward Linked Learning implies that you know when you have reached it and that it shows the Academy Outcomes. Did you specify which Industry Related

materials you were using? Did you specify how would it be measured? Did students know what they were aiming

for? Did you include the Academy Outcomes?
