“The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc. (JSAE) was founded on February 1, 1947. Its aims, as stipulated in Article 4 of its articles of incorporation, are to “promote scientific culture, expand the industrial economy, and improve the quality of people’s lives by furthering the development of automobile science and technology.” In June 1947, JSAE was sanctioned as a corporation by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure and Transport. In 1981, it became a member of the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies and was registered with the Science Council of Japan as an academic research organization three years later. When JSAE was first established, its members numbered only 1,500. Today, with the growth of Japan’s automobile industry, membership has swelled to close to 41,000 members and JSAE is recognized as a leading scientific organization in Japan. JSAE has been developing positive activities in Japan through the “Science Council of Japan” and the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies (JFES), as well as overseas through active membership in the International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies (FISITA) and participation in the International Pacific Conference on Automotive Engineering (IPC).”
“FISITA is an independent world body representing over 144,000 automotive engineers belonging to national automotive societies in 38 countries. FISITA was founded in 1948 to provide a global forum for the exchange of technical knowledge on every aspect of vehicle design and manufacture. FISITA brings together engineers and decision-makers from industry, academia and government to work towards the
improvement of transportation systems, the conservation of energy and the protection of the environment. www.fisita.com”

Welcome message and OverviewWelcome Message
On behalf of the organizing committee, it is our pleasure to welcome you to CVT-HYBRID 2007 Yokohama, the International Congress on Continuously Variable and Hybrid Transmissions. This bi- or triennial congress is recognized as one of the major series of congresses in CVTs and hybrid transmissions. The congress aims to be a high quality congress that provides opportunities for academics and industrial professionals worldwide to exchange their knowledge of the state-of-the-art CVT and hybrid transmission technologies and applications. We do hope that this congress will be highly successful and fruitful for all participants. Please join us this September, and enjoy the congress and a pleasant stay in the international port city of Yokohama.
Yasukazu Sato, Dr. Eng., Associate Professor, Yokohama National University Congress Chair, CVT-HYBRID 2007 Yokohama
Overview
The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE) hosted "CVT '96 Yokohama," in 1996. The congress was reconvened in the following years in the Netherlands (1999), Germany (2002), and the USA (2004). New aspects of hybrid technologies have emerged as congress topics of discussion since 1999. In 2007, the congress returns once more to Yokohama. During the last decade, certain CVT technologies have matured, while new CVTHYBRID technologies have emerged. In seeking to achieve an encompassing view of such interesting and pressing topics, the congress emphasizes organized sessions featuring distinguished speakers from leading corporations, institutions, and universities worldwide active in the field of CVTHYBRID. More than 40 papers will be presented on all areas of basic and applied science and technology related to CVT components and CVT & HYBRID systems.
Venue
Hamagin Hall “VIA MARE”* 3-1-1 Minatomirai, Nishi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa 220-8611 JAPAN http://www.yokohama-viamare.or.jp/
* The organizing committee of CVT-HYBRID 2007 Yokohama announced in Call for Papers that the congress venue would be the Education and Culture Hall in Yokohama National University. After that, the committee decided to change the venue from YokohamaNational University to Hamagin Hall “VIA MARE”, taking all circumstances into consideration. Hamagin Hall “VIA MARE” meets everyrequirement for an international congress. We are convinced that its good accessibility and convenient location will create a pleasurable environment for all participants.

Innovative Bosch
Ultimate driving comfort, maximum power, continuous smooth acceleration, more driv-
ing fun and, last but not least, increased fuel economy are fundamental requirements of
modern traffic. They can all be achieved by means of one unique innovative technology:
CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission.
Ultimate comfort in increasing traffic.
Contributing to a sustainable future.
The CVT working principle
With the rapid growth of car ownership in the past, automatic transmissions have become
an indispensable technology. Already a lot of drivers use this technology to make driving
more comfortable and less stressful in stop-and-go traffic and traffic jams. CVT, currently
deployed in over 10 million cars worldwide, enhances driving comfort even further.
By optimizing the utilization of engine power, CVT can increase fuel efficiency by up
to 10-15% compared to other automatic transmissions and, consequently, significant-
ly reduce emissions. This makes CVT the ideal system for the future of the auto-
motive industry.
A CVT consists of an electronically controlled and oil-pressure supported variator.
The variator consists of a set of pulleys (primary and secondary) and a high alloy
steel pushbelt. The pushbelt is the heart of the CVT and forms the indispensable link
between the vehicle’s engine and the driving wheels. The engine’s power is trans-
ferred from the primary pulley to the secondary pulley by pushing the CVT push-
belt. By changing the width of the pulleys, an ininite number of ratios can be
established. The Bosch CVT pushbelt is available for all power classes.
For Smooth Acceleration into a Stepless Future.
Invented by Bosch, the No. 1 in patent applications in automotive technology.More than any other supplier, Bosch has played a role in shaping progress in auto-
motive technology. With its dedication to long-term strategic partnerships and
expertise in training programs for local customers, Bosch will actively help to
promote the development of CVT. For further information, please inquire at:
