Number of directed thesis: 28 Number of directed postdoc: 11Relevant results: Two lines of research: aging and traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children. Regarding aging, several studies involving inter-limb coordination tasks of varying complexity have shown convincing evidencethat elderly individuals recruit extra neural resources compared to young adults. This brain “overactivation”phenomenon is correlated to performance, suggesting a potential compensatory strategy with old age. RegardingTBI in children, results have shown that this population is less successful on clinical motor test batteries thannormal controls. fMRI has revealed that they exhibit increased activation of cortico-subcortical areas during motorcoordination. This ‘compensatory’ neural recruitment reflects increased cognitive control of movementOthers: Motor learning: different neuroimaging techniques used in the lab (Functional Magnetic ResonanceImaging, Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Transcranial Magnetic and Voxel-Based Morphometry) suggest specific brainactivation patterns associated with visuomotor-guided motor tasks. Specifically, a leftward hemispheric bias formotor preparation processes, and a rightward lateralization for visuospatial attention mechanismsIdentify key words: Functional analysis; Motor process; Neuroimage; Cognitive neuroscience; Aging process;Data collectionStart date: 01/03/2011 Duration: 3 years - 6 months - 14 days

Relevant results: Voxel-based morphometry analysis revealed that age was associated with grey matterdeclines in task-relevant cortical areas and that grey matter in these areas was negatively associated with taskperformance. However, no evidence for a mediating effect of grey matter in age-related bimanual performancedecline was observed. We propose a new hypothesis that functional compensation may account for theobserved absence of mediation, which is in line with the observed pattern of increased inter-individual variance inperformance with age.Reviews in journals: 0Relevant publication: Yes

Relevant results: Results showed that higher age was associated with widespread increases in RD anddecreases in MTR, indicative of white matter deterioration, possibly due to demyelination. Older adults alsoshowed a higher mixing cost, implying slowing of switching performance. Finally, mediation analyses demonstratedthat decreases in MTR of the bilateral superior corona radiata contributed to the observed slowing of switchingperformance with increasing age. These findings provide evidence for a role of cortico-subcortical white matterchanges in task switching performance deterioration with healthy aging.Reviews in journals: 5Relevant publication: Yes

Relevant results: This review focuses on EEG/MEG studies that unravel the processes involved in movementplanning and execution, motor learning, and executive functions involved in task switching and dual tasking.Evidence is presented for a spatio-temporal reorganization of the neural networks within and betweenhemispheres to meet increased task difficulty demands, induced or spontaneous switches in coordination mode,or training-induced neuroplastic modulation in coordination dynamics. Future theoretical developments will benefitfrom the integration of research techniques unraveling neural activity at different time scales. Ultimately thiswork will contribute to a better understanding of how the human brain orchestrates complex behavior via theimplementation of inter- and intra-hemispheric coordination networks.Reviews in journals: 0Relevant publication: Yes

Relevant results: Both increases and decreases in resting state functional connectivity have been previouslyobserved within the motor network during aging. Moreover, the relationship between altered functional connectivityand age-related declines in bimanual coordination remains unclear. Here, we explored the developmentaldynamics of the resting brain within a task-specific motor network in a sample of 128 healthy participants, aged18-80 years. We found that age-related increases in functional connectivity between interhemispheric dorsaland ventral premotor areas were associated with poorer performance on a novel bimanual visuomotor task.Additionally, a control analysis performed on the default mode network confirmed that our age-related increasesin functional connectivity were specific to the motor system. Our findings suggest that increases in functionalconnectivity within the resting state motor network with aging reflect a loss of functional specialization that may notonly occur in the active brain but also in the resting brain.Reviews in journals: 0Relevant publication: YesTranslations: English

Relevant results: Magnetoencephalography scans were recorded during the execution of a working memoryinterference task. Brain activity sources from younger and older adults during the encoding stage of a workingmemory task were compared in two condition (interrupting, distracting) using minimum norm estimation analyses. The elderly showed enhancement of prefrontal activity during early latencies of the encoding process in bothconditions. In the distraction condition, enhanced activity was located in left ventrolateral prefrontal regions, whereas in the interruption condition, enhanced activity was observed in the right ventral prefrontal areasand anterior cingulate cortex. Increased recruitment of prefrontal regions in the elderly might be related to theprocessing depth of information, encoding of new information and semantic associations that are successfullyrecalled, and with interference resolution and preparatory control when the level of interference becomes higher. These prefrontal modulations during early latencies might reflect a higher top-down control of the encoding processin normal aging to prevent forgetting.Reviews in journals: 0Relevant publication: YesTranslations: English

Relevant results: Magnetoencephalography was used to investigate differential neural patterns in young andolder adults performing an interference-based memory task with two experimental conditions, interrupting anddistracting, during successful recognition. Behaviorally, both types of retroactive interference significantly impairedaccuracy at recognition more in older adults than in young adults with the latter exhibiting greater disruptionsby interrupters. Magnetoencephalography revealed the presence of differential age-related neural patterns.Specifically, time-modulated activations in temporo-occipital and superior parietal regions were higher in youngadults compared with older adults for the interrupting condition. These results suggest that age-related deficits

Thirty-six subjects with stroke underwent a PRI based on their preservedcapacities, personal and contextual factors. Assessment was focused on different rehabilitation areas beforeand after the PRI with the CIF and different scales. We compared pre and post-treatment punctuations regardingbody functions, activities and environmental factors. The sample was divided into two groups: less than five andmore than five years after stroke. We observed greater treatment response in patients with less than five yearsof evolution. It was obtained high correlations between activity items related to walking, speaking and eating, aswell as in body function items involved in reception and expression of language, integrative language functions andbody muscles strength. Hence, the development of a PRI based on the ICF as a clinical tool improves the degreeof functionality and autonomy in patients with stroke.Reviews in journals: 0Relevant publication: YesTranslations: Spanish

Relevant results: We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to examine brain magnetic patterns in youngand older adults who perform an interference-based working memory task with two experimental conditions;interrupting and distracting. Behaviourally, both types of retroactive interference significantly impair workingmemory accuracy at recognition more in older adults than in young adults with the latter exhibiting greaterdisruptions by interruptors. MEG results revealed the presence of differential age-related and interference-relatedneural patterns. Specifically, time-modulated activations in posterior-frontal regions were increased inyoung compared to older adults characterising each condition. Additionally, young adults exhibited greaterposterior-frontal activations for the interrupting compared to the distracting condition. These results suggest

that age-related deficits in inhibitory mechanisms that increase vulnerability to interference are associated withunder-recruitments in posterior-frontal regions. On the other hand, the absence of differential interference-relatedneural recruitments reflects that both types of interference affect working memory equally in the elderly.Reviews in journals: 9Relevant publication: YesTranslations: English

Relevant results: We investigate whether Subjective memory complaints (SMCs) are associated with alteredbrain biomagnetic patterns even in the absence of OMI. We report spatio-temporal patterns of brain magneticactivity recorded with magnetoencephalography during a memory task in 51 elderly participants divided into thefollowing groups: patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with SMC and OMI, individuals with SMC but notOMI, and healthy controls without neither SMC nor OMI. Exclusion criteria for all three groups included a diagnosisof depression or any other psychiatric condition. No statistically significant differences were found between MCIpatients and participants with SMC. However, the SMC showed higher activation, between 200 and 900 ms afterstimulus onset, than the control group in posterior ventral regions and in the dorsal pathway. MCI patients showedhigher activation than the control group in the posterior part of the ventral pathway. These findings suggest thatsimilar physiological mechanisms may underlie SMC and MCI, which could be two stages in a cognitive continuum.Reviews in journals: 8Relevant publication: YesTranslations: English

patterns with magnetoencephalography by the presentation of two types of retroactive interference, active andpassive. We obtained increased activity in the left medial temporal lobe and the left anterior ventral prefrontalcortex at early (100-200 ms) and medium latencies (300-400 ms) for the active interference group, and left anteriorventral prefrontal cortex showed greater activity at late latencies (700-800 ms) for the passive interference group. Atime-modulated ventral prefrontal activation was shown for the active and passive interference conditions indicatingthat executive control mechanisms were necessary in both groups.Reviews in journals: 3Relevant publication: YesTranslations: English

Relevant results: We explored profiles of brain magnetic activity during a memory task recorded withmagnetoencephalography from MCI patients (N = 10), Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients (N = 10), and healthyvolunteers (N = 17). After 2½ years of follow-up, five of the MCI patients developed AD. Patients who progressedto AD (PMCI) showed higher activity than those who remained stable (SMCI), AD patients and controls. Thisincreased activity in PMCI patients involves regions within the ventral and dorsal pathways. In contrast, SMCIpatients showed higher activation than controls only along the ventral pathway. This increase in both the ventraland dorsal pathways in PMCI patients may reflect a compensatory mechanism for the loss in efficiency in memorynetworks, which would be absent in AD patients as they showed lower activity levels than the rest of the groups.Reviews in journals: 5Relevant publication: NoTranslations: English

The recordings were made usinga 148-channel magnetoencephalograph capable of measuring the magnetic activity generated within the entirecranial convexity. Results showed greater activation was recorded under active interference conditions in themedial temporal regions, visual cortex and anterior ventral area in the first 400 ms in the left hemisphere and onlyin the right hemisphere for the visual cortex, while under passive interference conditions, increased activation wasobtained in the anterior ventral region during the 700-800 ms in the left hemisphere. Hence, the presentation ofboth types of interference, active and passive, modulates the fronto-temporal activation patterns in normal aging.Reviews in journals: 1Relevant publication: NoTranslations: Spanish

This is mainly due to its excellent temporal resolution which allows the evaluationof functional connectivity in the frequency domain. These characteristics make MEG unique for the study of theorganization of the neurophysiological mechanisms supporting cognitive capabilities in the aging brain. In thischapter we will review MEG findings in normal and pathological aging. In normal aging, we will go through themechanisms of forgetting and the assessment of the default mode network organization. In the field of pathologicalaging, the literature has mainly focused on Alzheimer's Disease (AD). These studies assess sensory memory,short-term and long-term memory, indicating decreased activity and connectivity in AD patients but increasedactivity at early stages such as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Finally, there is extensive literature using restingstate recordings to characterize the brain networks of patients with dementia in a non-task context. All these topicswill be discussed in the context of the literature of cognitive neuroscience of aging. Potential new approaches andrecommendations for future research will be provided.Reviews in journals: 0Relevant publication: YesTranslations: English
