My program of teaching, research and extension focuses on improving the efficiency of feed utilization; reducing the environmental impact of beef cattle farming; evaluating metabolic rate at whole animal and tissue levels; evaluating nutrient metabolism on both high-grain and forage based rations; evaluating grazing systems; assessing the metabolism through biochemistry, metabolomics, proteomics and genomics; fostering collaborations ruminant microbiology related to greenhouse gas emissions and productive performance; evaluating the relationships between feed efficiency and carcass composition traits that affect meat quality; assessing the biological associations between feed efficiency and sexual maturity; optimizing sensing methodologies for assessing productive performance and other complex traits on-farm and in processing plants; evaluating biomarkers health and welfare; and, ultimately, responding to the beef cattle industry needs. My aim has been to develop a broad and integrative teaching, research and extension program rooted in both fundamental and applied research, with the goal of optimizing productive efficiency and husbandry practices of beef cattle production systems oriented towards environmental, social and economic sustainability.
