RODOLPHE BOUQUILLARD Painter Born in 1992 in Paris, Rodolphe Bouquillard is studying Architecture at Paris Malaquais school of Architecture. Rodolphe Bouquillard presents in this catalogue different series, always nourished by the vocabulary borrowed from the XX century’s masters. Insatiable and passionate about modern and contemporary art, Rodolphe Bouquillard keeps on discovering artworks and writings of these great artists. Therefore he could visit numerous exhibitions in France and abroad, in museums and galleries. His bulimic consumption of art books let him develop a profound reflection over minimalist, spatialist and abstract expressionist artists. These researches and the uninterrupted quest helped him find his own answers and his own concepts, especially questionings on Donald Judd and Lucio Fontana, which are the original basis of his series - Toiles Sculptées Abstraites (p.8). By elaborating the original solutions to their questions, Rodolphe Bouquillard dares to do the synthesis of these two artists. This same method brought him to get interested in Simon Hantaï and his folding by conceiving a new technique of “folding without the folds”. This new technique takes form in the series - Empreintes (p.24) - unmistakably contemporary paintings , some of which were created by artist having in mind the multicolor spots on the white background of Damien Hirst. Picasso, Miro and Matisse have led him to fill more then hundred sketchbooks with his frenetic drawings. He would untiringly realize copies of their canvases. This process gave birth to the series - Formes et Courbes (p.42) - which followes architectural geometrical variations and for which he used his mathematical and philosophical knowledge. Therefore, he managed to free himself from the influence of these masters and found his own path in creating the series - Figures Libres (p.54) - drawn with a spontaneous line. This is the same creative fever which, after reading the Philosophy in the Bedroom of Marquis Donatien de Sade, brought him to create, while almost spaced out, a sculpture in clay of a phantasmagorical figure of the Marquis (p.66), and which would be named after him. Later he would decide to free himself by creating two opposed and perfectly rational paintings with the grid and framing of the same artwork (p.72). Finally his last series - les Toiles Sculptées Figuratives (p.76) - associate the technique of abstract sculpted canvases and the technique of Figures Libres by trying the synthesis of these two series and by taking the inspiration from Tchokwe which marked his childhood through the masks and sculptures collected by his grandfather.
