Observations from the coxswain’s platformIn 1967, I was the head coxswain of the 2nd Division 50’ Utility boat, or as you enlisted knowit, the liberty launch. The ship had two liberty boats, my 50’ and the First Division 40’. Mostof the time the trip across to Fleet Landing was rather boring. Just make sure you didn’trun into one of buoys in the harbor or maybe a destroyer tied up to one of those same buoys. But during the winter, San Diego harbor would get foggy at night. Fog isn’t fun when youare a coxswain, regardless of what boat you were in, a Utility boat, the “P” boat (officer’sLiberty launch), or the Captain’s gig.

I recall one foggy night trying to get to fleet landing to bring sailors back from liberty, itwas extremely foggy so my bow hook, Johnny Ankrom was on the bow with the fog horn. The standard procedure was to blow the horn and wait for a reply from another vessel inthe fog. We did this at slightly above an idle. If we didn’t hear a reply, we would proceed. If we got a reply, we would work around where the sound was coming from in order to avoida collision. I must say that in my time as coxswain of the 50 footer, we never hit anything. We did come close one night but the liberty boat gods were watching over us.

But on one foggy night, we were proceeding at that slightly above idle speed when we spiedlights in the fog. Fleet landing we thought. Nope. The tide had carried us out towards thesea so we just followed the pilings back up river until we found Fleet Landing (now wherethe Midway is berthed). We hung around there for a while waiting for the fog to clear, thenwe would beat feet back to the ship.

On another night we were going back to the ship and the fog rolled in so out came the foghorn and we went back to idle. We heard echoes from the horn that told us we were verynear something of substance but we could see no lights. Then Johnny hollers to back up,quickly. Fortunately he had jumped down from the bow or I might have dumped him in theharbor. Once we stopped, we realized we were up against something big and gray. We hadonce again drifted out toward the sea and had come face to face with one of other carrierstied up at North Island. So we just followed both ships (yes, we had drifted out to the endof the quay past the other two carriers that were in port with us) until we found the float. We didn’t have many sailors on board and the few we had really hadn’t noticed what wasgoing on.

But the biggest shock I ever got was when we turned out for the 0600 run and there was aJapanese carrier tied up next to the float (it wasn’t there when we tied up after the 0200run). It was complete with a flight deck full of Japanese planes. We were to find out laterthis was sister ship Hancock with her makeup on for the filming of Tora, Tora, Tora.I did enjoy my time on the boats and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Ed “Razzoo” Rizzo

Chaplains Corner By: LCDR Brett InmanFellow Shipmates & Friends,I remember graduating from the Naval Chaplain School feeling both excited anticipation andnervous weariness. Looking back, I laugh at the written description that was originally givento me concerning duty aboard the ship. It stated that it was considered “arduous duty” (I hadto look up the word to see what it meant) with the ship often leaving for three or even fourweeks at a time and sometimes even more. As I soon found out, the truth was definitelyweighted to the “or more” time away. The CG in CG-47 was sarcastically referred to mean“continually gone.”

As a new Chaplain, I was a little taken aback when, on my first day, a senior officer straightfaced told me that the unofficial motto of the ship was, “We Eat Our Young.” Happily, Icame to find out that that only held true in his department, and with the new Captain, thatattitude was soon fixed. In fact, I came to learn that for the most part, the health of the crew and the ship depended on teamwork and a focused effort to develop future leaders of the younger crew.

I remember one of the most important lessons that I learned about team work in Chaplain School happened about the thirdweek in. I was told that I had to report to the XO to be briefed about standing weekend watch. There was to be myself andanother student standing watch. We were told about our weekend watch duty at the last minute, and I was in a differentevolution than the other Chaplain that I was to stand watch with.

I was on the other side of the base and had about twenty minutes to report to the XO. The only problem was there was notransportation available. I did not want to be late to the first one on one meeting with the XO, so I decided the only chanceI had to make it on time was to make a run for it. Well I ran my heart out and made it (out of breath) with 15 seconds tospare. I started to explain to the XO why I was out of breath, all the time thinking he would be impressed by my effort.

He looked at me quietly for a few seconds and then proceeded to chew me out for the next five minutes for “notaccomplishing the mission,” letting down my teammate, and only taking care of myself.

At first I stood there dumbfounded, but then it dawned on me what he was trying to teach me. Without taking care of eachother and working as a team, the mission will always be a failure even if the task is accomplished. It would have been betterfor both of us to be late and take the consequences together if it meant the team would be stronger in the long run (even ifthrough fire).

That lesson has stuck with me to this day. Now, as a supervisor of a staff, I try to instill that same mindset into thoseI have the privilege of mentoring.

Scripture actually contains a lot of information about working together. This type of teamwork is evident in the societalstructures of marriage, family, community, business, and military that are illustrated throughout scripture. We are designedto need God and each other. No one has the skills and wisdom necessary for a successful life alone. We are commanded towork together and serve one another. Some examples are: In Numbers 11:14-17, Moses states he would wish to have Godtake his life rather than trying to complete his mission by himself. God responds by giving him seventy men to help him leadthe nation.

Nehemiah chapter four tells us that Nehemiah had to organize the people into teams to accomplish the rebuilding of the wallin Jerusalem. Not only did they complete their mission, but they could be an encouragement and a support to one another asthey worked toward the goal.

In Mark 6:7, it states Jesus always sent people out in teams to minister.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 tells us, “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of themfalls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.”

In 1 Corinthians 3:6-9, God reminds us that it takes a team to be successful and no one deserves the credit but GodHimself.

Henry Ford put it this way: “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”My encouragement to you today is value the teams you are on and help make them successful so you can be successful. This includes being on God’s team and living out His plan for your life. It is never too late to be part of a team!

In His service
