OUTGOING PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEGREETINGS SHIPMATES, FRIENDS AND FAMILY,

Now that my year is up as your president and the Gavel has beenpassed to Fred Vance our New President, it has been a pleasure servingthis past year.Lloyd and Joyce Frank put on wonderful reunion in Las Vegas withgreat tours during our visit! Thank you to both of you.We have a couple of things that Fred will be working on from our Board and Associationmeetings in Las Vegas.1) The Ships Bell on North Island will be refurbished. However we thought of seeing if we couldtransfer it to Ticonderoga, New York where more people could see it. In either case funds willbe allocated along with the donations that have come in to have the display re-built.2) The other project is our display room on the Hornet. We as an Association have decided togive the room to the Hornet so they can organize it according to the new standards that they areinstituting. A couple of members from our Association who live near the Hornet will coordinatewhat will come out and what will stay. Dave Graf has graciously volunteered to store the artifactsthat will be coming out of the display until a suitable home can be found for them.3) Our New President has already hit the ground running in planning our 2017 reunion in Tampa,Florida. I hope this summer is a good one for all of you.God Bless this great USA!

John Dupont

General Meeting Minutes – 2016 Reunion Las Vegas.

Meeting was called to order by President John Dupont who led the members in the Pledge ofAllegiance.

Secretary Dennis SaBell gave his report noting that there are 1008 records in the database includingDeceased, Past Due, Honorary, Regular, and Life Members. The mailing list is currently at 664 with25 New Members and 36 converting to Life Membership in the past year.

Next, Tom Thompson gave the Treasurer’s Report with the proposed Budget for 2016-2017. Thenew budget included an increase of $400 to add more color pages to the newsletter. The membershipvoted against the increase and the Budget was approved at $8,400 (no change from current). Thefinancial overview committee approved the Treasurer Report and Budget and Sean McConnell wasnominated and approved by voice vote to replace David Graf as he moves to 1st VP (Bill Spanbauermoves to 2nd VP and is already on the committee, so a third member was needed).

Historian David Graf then was called for his report. He noted that a transition is occurring as moreCruiser Members join and participate. Discussion of naming a new ship “Ticonderoga” ensued with nomotions. Discussion of where the artifacts of the ships should properly be stored for safety or displayedwas held. Because of changes in the Hornet museum and other factors, David volunteered his personalwarehouse as a temporary storage option and also volunteered to visit Fort Ticonderoga to see aboutpossibly consolidating some of the artifacts there. Both proposals were approved by voice vote.

Next was a discussion of the changes required by the Hornet Museum Board to standardize displays. Two options were presented: (1) The Association keeps ownership of the artifacts and pays $1500 peryear to rent the space on Hornet plus expenses to bring the displays up to standard, or (2) it could turnover ownership of selected artifacts to the Museum and let their staff prepare the display at no cost.Option 2 was chosen (Association volunteers will work with Hornet to remove items not to be displayed).

The Carrier’s Bell restoration was discussed next. Members have donated nearly $1200 so far. Aside discussion ensued as to whether North Island was the best place for the display since it is not opento the public. It was decided that the Association would quickly look into cost, feasibility, of movingto other locations, but would proceed with the original plan if a much better option was not found.

Joyce Frank (Reunion Coordinator) joined the meeting for discussion of options for the 2017and2018 reunions. The choices for 2017 were: a conventional reunion in Tampa or a cruise. Several memberspointed out that the cruise would be more expensive, would not allow people to participate for less thanthe full number of days, and might not be as well attended. Tampa was chosen and Joyce was giventhe go ahead to work with Fred Vance on the logistics. The location for 2018 was narrowed to Nashvilleor Milwaukee.

Next, Bill Spanbauer was nominated and voted as the new 2nd VP.David Graf proposed that all living Tico Commanding Officers be given Honorary Life Membership.

A motion for David to contact the COs was approved.A discussion of consolidating the Cruiser and Carrier stores was next. It was agreed that discussions

would be held with Ed Trotter to see if this could be accomplished. Then a discussion of shipping costsfor Cruise Books, Flags, etc. each year to the reunion were discussed. It was determined that it is moredesirable to have hard copies rather than electronic copies. It was agreed that it would stay the same butproposals would be accepted.

After discussing limiting the Board to the maximum of 20 (or less) as called for in the bylaws anddeferring the decision. The meeting was adjourned.

SECRETARY’S LETTERGreetings Shipmates,

We had a great time in Las Vegas! Thanks Lloyd and Joyce, you did a terrific job, now rest!

During and after reunions I usually find myself swamped with e-mails, handwritten notes, and verbal notices concerning new members, prospective members, members who may have died, requests for membership cards, and so forth…

If you asked me for something or told me about something and I haven’tresponded or done what you requested, I probably had an (age related) lapse. Please remind me (gently of course).

It is encouraging to see the enthusiasm of the Cruiser sailors who have joinedrecently. Their energy ensures that the Association will remain in good handswell into the future. Welcome aboard!

As always, If you have stories or ideas for entertaining newsletter items, you cansend them to me.

Dennis

Chaplains CornerBy: LCDR Brett Inman

Fellow Shipmates & Friends,When you think of the month of July, independence celebrations withfireworks and picnics usually come to mind. How could we forget thoseSteel Beach picnics! In my area of the country this is also the time thatthe monsoon rains come to a very thirsty land. Those in the military tend to be more patriotic than the general population.By nature of their profession, they have chosen to represent their nation’s international policiesupfront and personal. They have paid a personal sacrifice through long hours of training andeven longer deployments away from friends and family to protect our nation and her freedoms. As a result, we tend to value our freedoms more than most. We have seen the result of nationsthat have lost those privileges. Nobody wants to see their children living under the tyranny of agovernment that does not value its own people.

When I think of our 4th of July celebrations, I often also think of the preamble to the TenCommandments found in Deuteronomy five. In this chapter, God says to Israel, “I am theLORD God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” God gavethem the Ten Commandments so that they would be blessed and use the commandments toform the boundaries needed to have healthy families and a functional society. If they wouldfollow these commandments and turn from their self-serving ways, they would never again beslaves in another nation. (Unfortunately, it took one more captivity for Israel to learn the lessonof faithfully following God during the Babylonian Exile.)Throughout the Old and New Testaments, the authors entreat believers to pray for their leadersand their willingness to humble themselves before God so that He might bless the city and thenation. In just about every case in the Bible, the great nations of the past who did not acknowledgeGod’s sovereignty in their lives, were soon defeated and lost their freedoms. In Jeremiah 29:7, we are reminded to seek the welfare of the nation, city and community welive in. “But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you…and pray to the LORD on itsbehalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”

It is my hope that as you celebrate this 4th of July, that you would take a moment to thank Godfor blessing us with the freedoms we enjoy and those whom He used to pay the price for it (ourmilitary). Ask that our leaders would humble themselves so that we will never fall into our ownform of slavery to those who only value their power over our freedom.I will be praying for travel mercies for all of you as you enjoy the rest of your summer! I leaveyou with this blessing: “May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your planssucceed.” Psalm 20:4.

In His service,

A real miracle - from WWIIB-17 "All American" (414th Squadron, 97BG) Crew:

Pilot- Ken Bragg Jr. Co-pilot- G. Boyd Jr.Navigator- Harry C. Nuessle Bombardier- Ralph BurbridgeEngineer- Joe C. James Radio Operator- Paul A. Galloway

Ball Turret Gunner- Elton Conda Waist Gunner- Michael ZukTail Gunner- Sam T. Sarpolus

Ground Crew Chief- Hank Hyland

In 1943 a mid-air collision on February 1, 1943,Between a B-17 and a German fighter over the Tunis dock area,Became the subject of one of the most famous photographs of WW II.An enemy fighter attacking a 97th Bomb Group formation went outof control, probably with a wounded pilot, then continued its crashingdescent Into the rear of the fuselage of a Flying Fortress named"AllAmerican", Piloted by Lt. Kendrick R. Bragg, of the 414th BombSquadron. When it struck, the fighter broke apart, but left some piecesin the B-17.The left horizontal stabilizer of the Fortress and left elevator werecompletely torn away. The two right engines were out and one on theleft had a serious oil pump leak. The vertical fin and the rudder hadbeen damaged, The fuselage had been cut almost completely throughconnected only at two small parts of the frame, and the radios, electrical and oxygen systems were damaged. There was also a hole inthe top that was over 16-feet long and 4 feet wide at its widest; Thesplit in the fuselage went all the way to the top gunner's turret.

Although the tail actually bounced and swayed in the windand twisted when the plane turned and all the control cableswere severed, except one single elevator cable still worked, and the aircraft miraculously still flew! The tail gunner was trapped because there was no floorconnecting the tail to the rest of the plane. The waist andtail gunners used parts of the German fighter and their ownparachute harnesses in an attempt to keep the tail fromripping off and the two sides of the fuselage from splittingapart. While the crew was trying to keep the bomber fromcoming apart, The pilot continued on his bomb run and released his bombs over the target.

When the bomb bay doors were opened, the wind turbulence was so great that it blew one of the waist gunnersinto the broken tail section. It took several minutes and four crew members to pass him ropes from parachutesand haul him back into the forward part of the plane. When they tried to do the same for the tail gunner, thetail began flapping so hard that it began to break off.

The weight of the gunner was adding some stability to the tail section, so he went back to his position. Theturn back toward England had to be very slow to keep the tail from twisting off. They actually covered almost70 miles to make the turn home. The bomber was so badly damaged that it was losing altitude and speed andwas soon alone in the sky. For a brief time, two more Me-109 German fighters attacked the All American.Despite the extensive damage, all of the machine gunners Were able to respond to these attacks and soon droveoff the fighters. The two waist gunners stood up with their heads sticking out through the hole in the top ofthe fuselage to aim and fire their machine guns. The tail gunner had to shoot in short bursts because the recoilwas actually causing the plane to turn. (Continued on Page 22)

(Continued from Page 17)Allied P-51 fighters intercepted the All American as itcrossed over the Channel and took one of the picturesshown. They also radioed to the base describing thatthe appendage was waving like a fish tail and that theplane would not make it and to send out boats to rescuethe crew when they bailed out. The fighters stayed withthe Fortress, taking hand signals from Lt. Bragg andrelaying them to the base. Lt. Bragg signaled that 5parachutes and the spare had been "used" so five ofthe crew could not bail out. He made the decision thatif they could not bail out safely, then he would stay withthe plane to land it.Two and a half hours after being hit, the aircraft madeits final turn to line up with the runway while it wasstill over 40 miles away. It descended into an emergencylanding and a normal roll-out on its landing gear.

When the ambulance pulled alongside, it was waved offbecause not a single member of the crew had beeninjured. No one could believe that the aircraft couldstill fly in such a condition. The Fortress sat placidly until the crew all exited through the door in the fuselageand the tail gunner had climbed down a ladder, at which time the entire rear section of the aircraft collapsed.

This old bird had done its job and brought the entire crew home uninjured!
