Could it be too late to stop the trolls trampling over the entire political discourse?

appreciate the effort of the Students’ Representative ICouncil in helping their fellow students. My heartfelt condolence to the late Itumeleng Choane’s family, his

dedication will never go unnoticed. It boggles my mind to see what is happening over the political spectrum. I’m a proud South African. Social media has helped to democratise the political discourse, forcing journalists – who would otherwise simply dispense their alleged wisdom from on high – to face scrutiny.

Some take it badly. They are used to being slapped affectionately on the back by fellow inhabitants of the media bubble for their latest eloquent defence of the status quo. Baring in mind that people interpret and attached meaning to situations differently, give you the bone of contention. The entire political spectrum is deteriorating in standards. The citizens’ voices are disregarded and seen as impractical. Greed has barricaded the world with hate. Don't despise the misery upon us now, is but the passing of greed.

I'm not a politician, but just a concerned citizen.

Also known as Spisho, I tumeleng was born in F r e e d o m S q u a r e , Bloemfontein. He was a very down to earth person, career driven and versatile.

His sudden death in Cape Town during a tour with his fellow SRC members comes as a shock this is according to the spokesperson of the CUT, Dan Maritz and the SRC President Solomon Khiba commended Choane for his contribution towards t r a n s f o r m a t i o n a t t h e institution and for speaking out against racism. “The impact of his work will never

go unnoticed here at CUT. We shall remember him for his contributions in student leadership and for making us grow as a formidable centre of learning – a place of scholarship for young people in this country.

Working as an SRC member a t t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f Technology has taught him a lot as he was very good with interacting and engaging with everyone around campus and worked hard towards helping bring transformation into student life.

May his soul rest in peace.

Student Touring Association (STA) an association designated for students that are more outgoing and love touring and

exploring all aspects of the tourism industry , this association is not only about touring but team

building , having fun and serving the community as they already had their first community service at the Sunflower Hospice that has become their adopted home.Seems this association had their balls counted, as they already went on a rather exciting adventure a boat cruise in the Glen and Maselspoort area and according to Rakgomo Jacob Taule who is doing his post graduation in education (PGCE) the boat cruise was amazing experience, it felt like he was in a cruise somewhere in Mauritius and on top of it all this cruise was also a platform to get to know each other better since new members are recruited on a annual basis. What's on their cards this year is the freedom walk with the aim of condoning and promoting

healthy living. Mpumalanga trip, that's for exploring nature on the flip side which is another province and closing their year in style in one of SA’s neighbouring countries the Kingdom of Lesotho known as the home to Basho shoe.

CANSA shavaton

ansa Shavaton is an annual event Cheld by the Wellness Centre. It helps in raising funds for cancer.

Students donate R25 and they choose whether to spray-paint or shave their hair, whereas employees donate R50. This charity event is held annually during late February in support of those who suffer from the disease. There's no constant venue for this event. Students are given a platform to showcase their talents, whether by singing, rapping, reciting poetry etc. Charity really does begin at home, at CUT.

The significance of academic excellence

Professor David Ngidi the DVC for Teaching and Learning, reiterate the significance of academic excellence.

Academic excellence is the demonstrated ability to perform, achieve, and/or excel in

scholastic activities. Academic excellence has been identified with achieving high grades and superior performance. But

academic excellence is more than just making good grades. It is the maximum development of your intellectual capacities and skills in service to humanity. Academic excellence benefits according to Prof. are :Ÿ Making a meaningful contribution to society throughout your

life.

Ÿ Receiving academic scholarships.

Ÿ Being competitive in the job market.

“We encourage student to do their utmost best in their academics, because when applying for work in the cooperate sector - employers scrutinise applicants Cvs first, and the best will get the job” He concluded.

As South Africa's democracy evolves, it is becoming a more diverse but integrated country and cultural diversity continues to

be one of its strongest assets. South Africa is a country where creative expression flourishes and its endless cultural diversity is embodied through

traditional and modern interpretations of songs, dance, theatre, design, fashion and food. Cultural diversity is expressed in a number of ways, one of the most prominent of is the different cultural influences on that goes into the food that we eat. Though we now celebrate the diversity of our cultures, there is no real substance to our traditional practices; they have become perfunctory. It was a much wider community, a community of people of different races and ethnic divisions, closed off from one another except for trade and labour purposes. Celebrating the diversity of cultural has become a norm to CUT. The annual multi-cultural events is much of interactive event; where both students and staff members get a chance to learn something new

from one culture to the other. With so much exciting activities; dance, poetry, singing, etc. one can extrapolate by saying; it is a fun and educational event.

HEALTH MATTERS CAMPUS TALK

Who is affected by Vitiligo?Vitiligo seems to be somewhat more common in people with certain autoimmune diseases, including hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland), adrenocortical insufficiency (the adrenal gland does not produce enough of the hormone called corticosteroid), alopecia areata (patches of baldness), and pernicious anemia (a low level of red blood cells caused by the failure of the body to absorb vitamin B ). 12

Scientists do not know the reason for the association between vitiligo and these autoimmune diseases. However, most people with vitiligo have no other autoimmune disease. Vitiligo sometimes runs in families. Children whose parents have the disorder are more likely to develop vitiligo. However, most children will not get vitiligo even if a parent has it, and most people with vitiligo do not have a family history of the disorder.

What are the symptoms of Vitiligo?People who develop vitiligo usually first notice white patches (depigmentation) on their skin. These patches are more commonly found on sun-exposed areas of the body, including the hands, feet, arms, face, and lips. Other common areas for white patches to appear are the armpits and groin and around the mouth, eyes, nostrils, navel, genitals, and rectum.Vitiligo generally appears in one of three patterns:·Focal pattern—depigmentation limited to one or only a few areas.·Segmental pattern—depigmented patches that develop on one side of the body only.·Generalized pattern—the most common pattern. Depigmentation occurs symmetrically on both sides of the body.In addition to white patches on the skin, people with vitiligo may have premature graying of the scalp hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard. People with dark skin may notice a loss of color inside their mouths.

How is Vitiligo diagnosed? The diagnosis of vitiligo is made based on a physical examination, medical history, and laboratory tests.

What treatment options are available? The main goal of treating vitiligo is to reduce the contrast in color between affected and unaffected skin. The choice of therapy depends on the number of white patches; their location, sizes, and how widespread they are; and what you prefer in terms of treatment.

The smartwatch market is relatively new, but it's already fallen into the same pattern as mobile phones. So there are a large number

of watches using Google's Android Wear, up against a choice of two Apple Watches, one large and one small, in a variety of finishes, but all running the same operating system, watchOS. Then there's an outlier, but as Microsoft only makes this, that role falls to Kickstarter-funded Pebble, with its growing

range of versatile smartwatches.

Here at techradar, Smartwatches go through the same intense reviewing processes as our phones and tablets, as we weigh up everything from design and features, to interface and price. That means we can bring you what we believe is the comprehensive list of the best smartwatches around, telling you which watch offers the best balance of function, performance, style and value for money. Every Android Wear smartwatch in the world today. Recent improvements to Android Wear, the release of the far more

feature-packed Apple watch OS 2 and updates to the Pebble make smartwatches more competitive and appealing than ever. All of them deliver important information, from texts messages to email alerts, without the need to get your phone out. Most also offer fitness tracking, and apps then open up a wide range of additional functions.

This memorable, heart-

breaking story opens in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 1974, on the eve of a revolution. Yonas kneels in his mother's prayer room, pleading to his god for an end to the violence that has wracked his family and country. His

father, Hailu, a prominent doctor, has been ordered to report to jail after helping a victim of state-sanctioned torture to die. And Dawit, Hailu's youngest son, has joined an underground resistance movement—a choice that will lead to more upheaval and bloodshed across a ravaged Ethiopia.Read it because: Beneath the Lion's Gaze tells a

gripping story of family, of the bonds of love and friendship set in a time and place that has rarely been explored in fiction. It is a story about the lengths human beings will go in pursuit of freedom and the human price of a n a t i o n a l r e vo l u t i o n . Beneath The Lion's Gaze is a transcendent and powerful debut that is emotionally g r ipping, poet ic, and indelibly tragic.

A lot has been happening in South Africa from the past year into this new 2016 year. From Xenophobic attacks in KwaZulu

Natal, Gauteng, Limpopo and the Western Cape… to the many hate murders in the farms , Penny Sparrow's racist remarks on social media, not to

mention #SoAndSoMustFall, #ThisAndThatMustFall, #AccessMustRise, racist attacks at universities (UFS I see you… wink*) and everything else that the human society is fighting to see the end or beginning to.

We all believe that such should not happen and always say how wrong it is to live in a democratic country, 21 years later where such still happens. I am not saying that people should not be concerned when our nation is not in good shape, maar

I feel we should ask ourselves what the main cause is and what is the way forward?

Wa bona if you could take a closer look at all of these disturbing situations, you'll realise that the only thing we are fighting is inequality. With that being said, I thought I could come and introduce a really cool idea that at least we could all live by, for the sake of peace… I mean we've tried so many ideas with so little success already (104 years of fight for the ANC for one), so I would like to believe that pluralism is only one way to go, not only for South Africa but for the whole human society. “If God is love and love is God, why is my love a sin” – Mathematician TP Faith Lebitso

Varsity Athletics The first lag meeting was held in Johannesburg by UJ. As the new team on varsity athletics, we were allowed to participate on the B-section with only 10 athletes. The competition was tough for our athletes as Most of those who met the standard of participation were new students’ athletes. The level of competition was high. We managed to get a silver medal from Tsepang Sello who ran 800m. Events of this caliber needs a lengthy time of mental and physical preparation. That is one factor of which our coaches are willing to look at for future preparations. CUT was placed last in its competing category. The last leg was held in Stellenbosch by the University of Stellenbosch. Our athletes were better prepared this time. We managed to scoop two medals by Tsepang Sello and Elishama Eksteen. Our final overall team points managed to put us on the third position on our category, great improvement from first leg.
