Completely compatible with B&R se-ries devices: If a device failure should occur and no custom device is imme-diately available for replacement, a standard B&R display unit can be used temporarily. This prevents long delays in operation.

Hygiene in industry

Hygiene is also an important topic in medical technology and the pharma-ceutical industry. In these industries, both the products and the employees involved must be protected from in-fections and diseases.

The main aim of these requirements is to provide health-related protection from product contamination for those involved as well as protection for the end-user. This is achieved by using the appropriate materials and a hy-gienic construction.

Touch operationThe use of a touch screen was part of the plan from as early on as the con-cept phase. Existing keys and entry devices can often be integrated into the visualization.

A resistive touch sensor is especially well-suited for use in the hygiene area. Its high-tech Mylar membrane surface allows this touch screen to be integrated seamlessly in an operating panel. This guarantees full functional-ity, prevention of Newtonian rings and a long lifespan with several million touch entries. Resistive touch screens offer several advantages and feature quick reaction, high resolution as well as a sturdy and contamination-free surface. These screens can be activat-ed by finger (with or without gloves)

Hygienic HMI products

The B&R stainless steel program

This series of devices features a hygienic construction and uses es-pecially resistant materials such as smoothed stainless steel, high-grade polyester foil and special sealing materials. From simple visualization terminals to operating units with in-tegrated control and drive technolo-gy. Integrated PC systems or remote units from the 5.7" monochrome dis-play to the 15" color TFT display.

Monolithic operating panelsIt is often necessary or desired to mount the operating unit to a swing arm system. In this case, a panel for switching cabinet installation is installed in stainless steel housing, which is then attached to the swing arm system. The additional intersec-tion between housing and operating unit is also a hygiene risk because of

the resulting seams and gaps. Fur-thermore, there are handles screwed on for moving the housing. Here, too, seams and gaps are created in which dirt can collect.

B&R took these vulnerabilities into consideration when building their fully enclosed HMI system. The oper-ator panel is a single monolithic unit without joints or seams. All outer sur-faces are made of smoothed stainless steel and a high-grade polyester foil. The dimensions were designed to make it especially sleek. This means that additional handles are no longer necessary. The fully integrated touch screen and an IP65 USB interface are standard equipment. The backside is connected to a conventional swing arm system.

With these hygiene issues in mind, B&R has developed a device series perfectly suited for use in the foodstuffs, pharma-ceutical and packaging industries.

Contact-free operator identification

Transponder interfaceAccess authorization that's normally performed via key switch can also be implemented using fully integrated transponder systems. This technolo-gy enables personalized authorization levels (service, administrator, opera-tor, etc.).

The transponder system can be com-pletely integrated behind the Mylar membrane of the operating unit, mak-ing this variant a real alternative to the conventional key switch. Lost "key" transponders can simply be replaced.

Keyring transponders are available in a range of colors and as read-only or read/write variants.

A user with the necessary rights can write to a new transponder directly on the operating unit.

This technology has already been proven in millions of instances of building technology and time record-ing systems. It can also provide flex-ible and, more importantly, hygienic access authorization for operating units.

The advantages of the B&R illuminated ring keys have been observed in practice.

Optical advantage

Illuminated ring keys are a perfect complement to touch screen opera-tion. The display on the screen can be adapted to the purposes of the system, yet the keys with the most important basic functions (start / stop / operating interval / etc.) are always right in the same location with illumi-nated ring keys.

B&R's illuminated ring keys are com-posed of a short-stroke key, a source of light, and high-performance LEDs. The main component is the luminous ring developed by B&R that provides even distribution of light around the key. This guarantees optimal readabil-ity and signal effectiveness even at larger distances.

The LEDs are available in red, yellow, and green, and can be combined to make one-tone or multi-tone illumi-nated ring keys. Legend strips make the arrangement of key labels very flexible. Use in the foodstuffs industry is also not a problem thanks to the hy-gienic design.

Illuminated ring keys can be controlled by the smallest terminal, an industrial PC, or over a fieldbus (e.g. ETHERNET Powerlink, CAN, or Profibus).

Illuminated ring keys considerably improve visual components, provide more security, and should be present on all op-erator panels that control modern machines and systems.
