Overview

The Bavarian car manufacturer operates a fleet of aircraft based

at Munich airport, Germany. BMW Group activities worldwide

are co-ordinated from the corporation’s head office in Munich.

A city landmark, the “four-cylinder” tower at the Olympic park

is the nerve centre for an organisation which covers over 150

countries.

The BMW Group recognises the importance of being present in

markets around the world in order to detect trends early on and

harness them to create innovations for tomorrow.

The worldwide production network of the BMW Group is the

backbone for growth in all their global markets. Thanks to the

close cooperation between all of the plants, manufacturing

takes place quickly and flexibly. This creates significant

advantages in the international market. The BMW Group

currently has 17 production facilities in six countries and often

there is a requirement for BMW to use different aircraft to cater

for the need to fly executives and key personnel around the

globe, operating 24/7.

The BMW Group is committed to maintaining and enhancing its

presence in key markets worldwide and the flight department

was founded in 1987 and the Chief Pilot is Paul Stoeber.

Background

Both of the Gulfstream G550 aircraft, BMW operate within

their fleet incorporate the latest Honeywell avionics technology.

BMW were looking for significant operating advantages whilst

flying the aircraft. The new Honeywell equipment installed on

the aircraft shall provide pilots with improved vision, smarter

navigation and a more complete picture of weather conditions.

BMW discussed different options and acknowledged that they

wanted to give their pilots the best solutions available that will

also help to reduce costs and increase operational efficiency.

Business Need

“BMW realised the need to incorporate Primus Epic – Cert.

Foxtrot on the aircraft and BMW Flight Service was one of

the first customers in Europe upgrading their Gulfstream

G550” said Paul Stoeber. The Honeywell’s system increases

operational efficiency by improving aircraft performance,

enhanced safety and navigation accuracy.

The Cert. Foxtrot upgrade system also enhances safety of

flight while keeping passengers comfortable. Increasingly

the latest features of FANS, WAAS-LPV and RNP0.3 were

used in the upgrade of the system as BMW requirements are

to fly Corporate Executives and other company personnel

around the world. “Within our flight department, any product

that enhances flight safety will be considered and in this

case, our senior management was easy to convince” says

Juergen Wiese, Head of BMW Flight Service. “Our Company

continuously considers all elements of safety and balances

these against business requirements. The price has to be right,

but when it comes to safety and efficiency we want the latest

and greatest technology.”

• Automatic set up of approaches enable more seamless

transitions between en-route and approach modes

• Electronic Terminal Charts (Certified as paperless)

• Part of SBAS-LPV

• Upgrade Inertial Reference

Future Air Navigation System (FANS)

• Reduces crew workload

• Faster time to destination on transoceanic flights

• Saves fuel with more efficient oceanic routing

- Up-link clearances accepted directly into flight plan

- Less delay on the ground with solid departure times when

flying oceanic routes

Solution

SV–PFD Enhanced 2.0

New display software activates the following new,

safety-enhancing features:

• Provides natural, three-dimensional depth of the terrain as

seen out the window

• New, realistic renderings provide a superior representation

of the surrounding terrain while in-flight. The distant terrain

gradually enters the crew’s view on the display, just as it

appears on a clear day

• Displays detailed runway information including runway

number and centerline on a realistic runway pavement

• Patented range rings allow the crew to easily interpret the

distance of the aircraft from surrounding terrain, obstacles

and runways

• Conformal, terrain blended grid lines provide a sense of

motion without distracting the crew from critical flight and

terrain information

Enhanced Navigation (EN)

BMW pilots are looking at smarter navigation for greater

airspace and airport access. With Honeywell’s FMS software

upgrade, they can perform the most efficient routing and

approach operations for FANS, SBAS-LPV, LPV, RNP and

RNP-AR.

• RNP 0.3

• Better access to high traffic or terrain challenged airports

during inclement weather

• Assured safety in unfamiliar airports

• Coupled, curved path guidance (both lateral and vertical) with

lower minimums than standard GPS approaches

• Improved airway joins function

Space Based Area Augmentation (SBAS)

Wide Area Augmentation System – Localizer Performance with

Vertical Guidance (SBAS-LPV)

• Offers lower minimums than standard LNAV/VNAV GPS

approaches

• Near ILS Category I minimums with no ILS on the field

• Provides required SBAS sensor for ADS-B out

• Compatible in Europe European Geo Navigation Overlay

System (EGNOS) and other future Space-based

Augmentation System (SBAS) regions

“Honeywell’s Cert. Foxtrot will enhance the operation of our Gulfstream aircraft providing greater situation awareness to our pilots. The Cert. Foxtrot features will play an important role to improve flight safety, which is our prime policy, besides enhancing passenger comfort”.

Benefits

The Cert. Foxtrot system interprets available data to provide

an easy-to-understand perspective that assists the pilot.

Immediately recognising its potential impact on the BMW flight

operation a decision was made to implement the Cert. Foxtrot

on their Gulfstream aircraft. “We fly in all kinds of conditions,

often making it hard to judge weather. It was obvious this

solution would give us greater confidence, whatever the

weather when using the synthetic vision system within

European and US operations,” says Capt. Paul Stoeber It gives

the pilot greater visibility and enhanced situation awareness

when operating in inclement conditions. It requires the pilot

to make no special effort to gather, interpret or update the

data. The Cert. Foxtrot provides savings in terms of time and

fuel, increases safety and offers operational efficiencies for the

operator. Since BMW incorporated the full Enhanced Navigation

(EN) package which includes FANS1A functionality they then

qualify for a lifetime aircraft exemption to the PM-CPDLC

Eurocontrol mandate (available until January 2014) which will

save them dollars.
