Basel is situated on the River Rhine and located in the three-country corner of Switzerland, France and Germany. Basel is the third largest city in Switzerland with 200 000 inhabitants.

HistoryDuring the days of the Roman Empire, the settlement of Augusta Raurica was founded 15 km upstream of present Basel. The Romans built 30 B.C. a castle overlooking the river where the Basel Münster stands now. Even older Celtics settlements have been discovered in the area of the Münster.

Switzerland first university was founded 1460 in Basel. Notables like Erasmus of Rotterdam and Paracelsus taught at the University. At the same time the new craft of printing was introduced to Basel.Since 1837 the Saline Schweizerhalle (close to Basel) are mined. Museums Basel is very proud of its many museums. No other Euro-pean city has so many top museums in such a small space (37 square kilometers for almost 30 museums). The various museums cover a wide range of interests but manly focused in fine art. Collecting art has a long tradition. Basel was the first European city to open the doors of an art collection in 1661.

Architecture Basel is a city which is conscious of tradition and open to innovation. In the well-preserved Old Town classical patrician residences and medieval churches can be visit. In the meantime modern buildings designed by internation-ally renowned architects such as Richard Meier, Mario Botta, Renzo Piano or Herzog & de Meuron can be found.

Shopping Best places for shopping are the shopping malls Stücki and the St. Jakob-Park in Basel. Many jewelry and watch stores can be found at the shopping street Freie Strasse in Basel.

The Rothaus Brewery is located in the heart of the Black Forest 1000 masl (3300 ft.) close to Grafenhausen. The brewery remains 100 % owned by the state of Baden-Würt-tenberg since 1922.

HistoryThe brewery was founded by the Abbot Martin Gerbert from St. Blasien in 1791. The abbot had the intention to get independence from the brewery in Fürstenberg and to encourage the region to economic growth. The ownership changed to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806. The name State Brewery of Baden Rothaus has been remained since the abolition of the monarchy in 1918. The location is perfect as the brewery owns seven spring waters. This water is still used for brewing today.

TodayThe Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus is one of Germany’s most successful and profitable regional breweries. The brewery has become well-known outside Baden in the past decade. In 2012 the company put out 790 000 hectoliters of beer, made revenue of € 80 Million, paid € 17 Million as dividends and has 213 employees. The brewery is one of the most important employers for the south-central Black Forest.

Rothaus BreweryBrandingThe “Rothaus Tannenzäpfle” or simply “Zäpfle” is a Pilsner-style beer and comes filled in 33cl bottles. Tanne-zäpfle literally means “little fir cones” and is a reference to typical Black Forest tree “spruces”. The labels of the bottles are printed with a blond girl in traditional dress for the region, holding two glasses of beer and next to her hanging the “little fir cones”.

Stuttgart, GermanyStuttgart is the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg in south Germany. Stuttgart has a population of 613 392 and is the sixth-largest city in Germany. Stuttgart is spread across a variety of hills some of them with vineyards, valleys and parks.

HistoryThe first settlement of Stuttgart was around the end of the 1st century AD. The Romans built a fort in the modern district of Cannstatt on the bank of the river Neckar. The Romans were pushed back by the Alamanni behind the Rhine and Danube around 260 AD. Stuttgart itself was founded around 950 AD. The town was used for breeding cavalry horses at the very center of today’s city. A gift registry from Herisau Abbey dated around 1160 mentioned Hugo de Stuokarten, confirms the existence of today’s Stuttgart.

TodayStuttgart is known for its high-tech industry. Some of very well recognized companies such as Daimler AG, Porsche, Bosch, Celesio and IBM have either their world or European headquarters here. The region has Germany’s highest density of scientific, academic and research organization. No other city in Germany registers so many patents and designs as Stuttgart.

Neues Schloss (New Palace)The New Palace is located at the heart of city center. It was built in late Baroque style and is reminiscent of the mag-nificent French palaces of the 17th century. The New Palace was one of the last big city castle constructed in south Germany.

The residence of the Kings of Württemberg was destroyed in World War II and later rebuild. Today, the Ministries of Financial Affairs and Education are established in the New Palace. It is also used as a representative house to receive official State Visits.

TV Tower StuttgartThe landmark of Stuttgart is the TV Tower. It is the world’s first TV tower built from concrete with a high of 216, 6 meters. The construction period lasted 20 months and the first broadcast of SWR (Südwestrundfunk) took place on 5 February 1956. The TV Tower Stuttgart has two observation decks with a view of Stuttgart, its vineyards and forest, the Swabian Jura and Black Forest. In the observation decks integrated are a restaurant and a theater. Nowadays the digital TV services have moved to the nearby Fernmeldeturm Stuttgart.

Mercedes-Benz MuseumStuttgart is home to the Mercedes-Benz brand and interna-tional headquarters of Daimler AG. The Mercedes-Benz museum was designed by UN Studio. The building was completed and opened on 19 May 2006. The museum’s height and “double helix” interior were designed to maximize space. The building has 16’500 square meters of exhibition space on a footprint of just 4’800 square meters. The museum shows more than 160 vehicles from the vintage car to the latest fashion cars.

Schloss Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Germany. The castle is situated eighty kilometers in the southwest of Munich. The region is one of the most beautiful locations in eastern Allgäu surrounded by the Alps, lakes and castles. The “fairy tale castle” thrones two hundred meters above the village of Hohen-schwangau in southern Bavaria.

HistoryThe young King Ludwig II started the construction of a new palace in place of the two ruined castles in 1869. His wish was to create a monument resembling the old German medieval knight’s castles. The castle often mocked to be too kitschy can be counted as one of the main oeuvres of European historism. That means the imitation of ancient architectural style in the 19th century. The architecture of the castle shows amongst other Romanic characteristics. Unfortunately King Ludwig never saw the finalization of his dream since he died in 1886. Schloss Neuschwanstein was opened to public seven weeks after his dead.

The CastleLudwig II wished to have his castle with two hundred rooms but only fifteen were eventually completed and furnished. Despite the medieval style the castle owns its interior was equipped with technical equipment. Floating water was available in the entire castle. Even elevators were installed to transport food and goods to the upper floors. In addition large sized windows were especially produced for the palace which was highly uncommon for this time and age.

Sängersaal (The Hall of the Singers) is the largest room in the palace with 270 square meters. The opulent interior design is inspired by a swan motive giving the castle its name. Several mural paintings show extracts of medieval myths presenting a particular interest of Ludwig II.

The Throne Hall with 240 square meters is situated in the west wing of the palace. With its height of 13 meters it occupies the third and fourth floors. Religious and political ideas were involved in the planning of the Throne Hall. The paintings here show how Ludwig saw kingship “by the Grace of God”: as a holy mission, with power that the Bavarian king had never possessed. The chandelier of four meters height is fashioned after a Byzantine crown.

TodayNowadays Schloss Neuschwanstein is visited by more than 1.3 million people per year. Averages of six thousand visitors per day admire the interior of the castle in the high season (summer). This – in combination with light and alpine climate – leads to extensive damage of the precious furniture and paintings.The idyllic location of Schloss Neuschwanstein is breathtak-ing. Nevertheless movement in the foundation of the castle has to be supervised constantly. The rock walls which surrounding the castle need to be secured in order to protect the area from falling rocks.

Allianz ArenaThe Allianz Arena is a football stadium in the north of Munich. It is the third biggest stadium in Germany behind Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund and the Olypiastadion in Berlin. The legal capacity of the stadium is 69’901 specta-tors including standing room. The building construction began on 21 October 2002 and was officially opened on 30 May 2005. The two professional Munich football clubs FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich have played their home games at the Allianz Arena since the opening. The primary designers are the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. The total cost of construction was € 340 million.

OktoberfestOktoberfest is a 16-day festival celebrating beer held in Munich annually. The beer festival takes place from late September to the first weekend in October. It is the world’s largest fair with more than six million visitors. The beer festival is held at the Theresienwiese in Munich since 1810. The Munich breweries brew a special beer with more gravity and with higher alcohol content 6-7% for the Oktoberfest.

ShoppingThe most internationally renowned luxury stores can be found in the Maximilianstrasse. Theatinerstrasse and Fünf Höfe are as well a primary address for luxurious shopping. It is also the home of traditional cafés and restaurants. Kaufinger Strasse with the medieval city gate Karlstor has been a pedestrian zone and Munich’s busiest shopping area since 1970. Half way between Marienplatz and Stachus are located the “Arkaden” a roofed alley which is home to more individual shops and cafés. Sendlinger Strasse is the most typical shopping district if you are looking for arts and crafts unusual gift shops and arty posters. The street is home of plenty little cafés and restaurants.
