Our Challenges
• Typical 3 Tier environment and the management challenges that come with it
• Aging Compellent SAN
• Mix of older Dell and Cisco UCS for compute
• Growing resource demands by the Engineering/QA teams were becoming harder to meet
• It was time for an overall evaluation of our infrastructure
7
The Selection Process
• We performed a small POC of Nutanix (3 Nodes) and had many meetings with VCE about Scale-IO
– vSAN was not an option for us as we needed the potential to run a number of hypervisors.
• The manageability and performance of Nutanix was very impressive in our POC.
– I kept hearing from one of my Engineers “THIS IS SO FAST!”
• Ultimately it came down to cost and the fact we were never given a chance at a true POC of Scale-IO

VxRail Implementation
Who is the BAC?
• Boston Architectural College (BAC)
• Independent design college in Boston’s
Back Bay
• Open admission school with a goal to diversify
the design professions
• 97 percent of all BAC students were employed
in their field at the time of graduation
the-bac.edu
Where Were We?
• Traditional 3-2-1 virtualization
stack
• 1gbe iSCSI Equallogic storage
with 7200rpm drives
• Needed to virtualize our
primary database server

What Did We Do?
• 3-node all-flash VxRail cluster
• First VxRail deployment that used Winslow’s Professional Services team (Thanks Nathan and Francis!)
the-bac.edu
How Did It Go?
GREAT!
• No Downtime During VM Migration!
• Ability to virtualize other physical servers as they approach the end of their warranties.
• Awesome deduplication/compression!

How Did It Go?
What Could Have Gone Better?
• Problems deploying ESRS
• VxRail Manager ability to pull status information
on physical node hardware stopped working
• One 10g switch port the VxRail cluster utilizes
died after everything else was resolved

What’s Next?
