Portland Fire Lieutenant, Lee Elten, attended Brooklyn’sgeneral meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 25th and gave every-one a history of our closest local station and the events thatled to severe staffing cutbacks in the past two years. He ex-plained the dangers that such understaffing poses to effec-tive fire response efforts in our neighborhood, and urgedthe board and the entire neigh-borhood to request that the CityCommissioners reconsider thesecutbacks.

Large Scale Development Proposed atTownshend Tea Properties

by Melaney DittlerBrooklyn has another new development coming in Spring 2020 at Brew Dr

properties on Milwaukie Ave, including two single family homes on 12th Ave. MattThomas, the owner of Brew Dr and Townshend’s Tea, has outgrown the site andhas coordinated with the developer Ethos, and architecture firm Hacker to build“brookLAND”, a five story, 160 unit apartment complex.

In September the team arrived to a heavily attended BAC board meeting andpresented their plans to the neighborhood: Six 3 bedroom affordable rental units with the remaining 1 and 2 bedroomunits and studios renting at market rate. The building will feature a modern design with an interior courtyard green space, elevators and ADA accessible units, approximately 40 mechanical auto parking spaces and 240 bike parking spaces ac-cessed on Boise Ave. A gym, a common area lounge and workspace and a rooftop deck with mountain and city views arealso in the plans. One commercial space in the building, a tea house featuring Townsends Tea, will be on street level.

The room was full of residents opposed to the 5 story large scale development asking questions and having concernsabout previous conversations regarding development on the property and the zoning changes that were granted in therecent past by the neighborhood based on those conversations. Many residents requested a max 4 story height as well asmore parking and more commercial spaces. Many were concerned about basic services (water/sewer/garbage/etc). Onthe other hand, some people were happy to see the development come in to the neighborhood, especially since it provideseasy access to Trimet routes and the central city. A few residents mentioned that we need more density in this area to helpwith our affordability and rental availability in the area.

If you have questions or concerns that you would like to get answered, please email the BAC Board at [email protected]. We would be happy to forward it and get a response. Attend future BAC meetings or reach out to theBoard for updated info regarding this development.

  • 2019 “ICE CREAM SOCIAL IN THE PARK”Thanks to all the volunteers that made this day possible:

Mark Romanaggi, Ben Tarne, Julio Enciso, Dan Howell, Rick Moore, John Weibke, Deb Brushi, Marie Phillippi andboard members: Josh Hetrick, Joanna Jenkins, Melaney Dittler, David Ward and Guy Berliner.

The Ice Cream Social could not happen without YOU!

For the first time in 18 years, it down-poured right at 2 pm. Though the music had to stop, a lot of neighbors stillstayed around until 4 pm.

And thanks to EVERYONE that came and helped us celebrate our Brooklyn community.

Usually, kids are all over the Polar Bear.

Kids came all dressed up for the fun.

Sophia Harrington was our face painter this year.

Scott Davis and his balloon sculptures kept kidsand adults entertained until 4 pm, rain and all.

Some kids loved to splash in the puddles.

Getting your face painted waspopular with everyone.

Sara & Nicolas continued to serve food, even through the rain storms. Josh & Lisa wowed neighbors

    with metal sculptures

Because of the rainstorm, the Yamhillbillies wereable to provide music for just one hour this year.

  • On Sunday, Oct. 6th, it was perfect weather as more that 5,000 runners cruised through the streets of Brooklyn andBrooklyn came out to cheer them on. For the day, we declared Brooklyn the “home of the high five” and encouragedpeople to offer high fives to the runners.

As the runners came through the center of Brooklyn, they were greeted with live music organized by Ed Rosney ofArtichoke Community Music. Runners and cheering residents enjoyed the music of the Martingale Band; Bass Pancake,a jazz combo of Cleveland High students; The Oregon Mandolin Orchestra as well as Jon Lee and the True Bluesers.

Across the street from the music, volunteers from The Friends of Brooklyn Park handed out drinks and treats to therunners in front of Brooklyn Park. The Marathon provided a donation to them to help fund the Summer Youth Pro-gram.

After the aid station, the runners had a challenge of running up Franklin. The race director, Jared Rohatinsky, said themarathon got DOZENS of emails wanting to thank a young man that encouraged the runners up the hill and evensometimes running with them. If anyone has information who this person is, please contact the BAC so we can thankhim in person.
