This is what happened a few yearsago: The horrifying incident of recovery of two tranquilizer guns
seized from poachers in Kaziranga in the wake of the recentrhino poaching which have taken a toll of six rhinos in pastone month has been found to be of the Chief Wildlife Wardenof Nagaland. Unfortunately the case has not been followedup.Well this is something that needs to be taken up at thehighest office of this country.
This is an excellent example of protectorsbecoming poachers.....what conservation are wetalking or hoping of ??

Black rhinos are actually not
black at all.
The species probably derives
its name as
a distinction from the whiterhino (itself a
misnomer) and/or from the
dark-colored
local soil that often covers itsskin after
wallowing in mud.

The greater one-horned rhino is one of the two
greatest success stories in rhino conservation(the other one being the southern white rhino in
South Africa). With strict protection from Indian
and Nepalese wildlife authorities, greater one-horned
rhino numbers have recovered from fewer than 200
earlier in the 20th century to around 2,500. However,
poaching pressure has remained high and this recovery
is precarious without increased and accelerated support
for conservation efforts in India and Nepal.

The white rhino, along with the roughly equal-sized Greater
one-horned (Indian) rhino, is the largest species of land
mammal after the elephant. The white rhino is the leastendangered of the living rhino species. Of its two distinct
subspecies, the only populations of the Southern white rhino
populations remain viable. The Northern white rhino has
been driven to near-extinction by poaching.

The Javan Rhino is the rarest of the rhino species with fewer
than 60 animals surviving in only two known locations: one in
Indonesia (approximately 40-50 animals) and the other in
Vietnam (fewer than five individuals). In Indonesia, Javan rhinos
live only in Javas Ujung Kulon National Park, where the population
appears to have stabilized, largely because they are physically
guarded from harm by Rhino Protection Units. The continuation
of this protection, combined with establishing a second population
in Indonesia, provides the best possible hope for the species survival.

The Sumatran rhino, also called the hairy rhino because of its
hairy body and tufted ears, is the most endangered of all rhinoceros
species because of its rapid rate of decline. Because of poaching,
numbers have decreased more than 50% over the last 15 years.
Fewer than 275 Sumatran rhinos survive in very small and highly
fragmented populations in Southeast Asia. Indonesia and Malaysia
hold the only significant populations. Sumatran rhinos exist only is
protected areas where they are physically guarded from harm by
Rhino Protection Units. The continuation of this protection provides
the best possible hope for the species survival.

1 horn can cost up to Rs.20 lakh. The horn is made up of the fibre
karotene[fingernail material] and hair.
The punishment given to a poacher is a fineof Rs.25,000 and 7 years behind the bars.
Rhinos have a very poor eye-sight and oftenattack things they dont recognise.
